So this is Oda's dream, he spent most of his childhood thinking about this series, most of his adult life making it, and it blows my mind that he still writing it with the same passion he always had. So it's fitting that one of the main themes in the story is dreams because that's how it was made in the first place. Just a little kid's dream to become someone great in the future.
Man, I'm so glad how good this was! Out of all the live action from anime I know of, One Piece was definitely the hardest one to adapt. Between the cartoony vibes, the crazy powers, the humongous worldbuilding and the INSANE amount of heart Oda pours into it, this is frankly something I never thought could work in live action. *And they pulled it off!* Been a One Piece fan for 2 decades, and not a corner of my heart isn't filled with pure pride and glee seeing the success of this series 😁
Thanks for reacting to this series! I like the "Whatever" by Helmeppo, but he initiates the fist bump. This had one of the best closing for a season, of any show, that I've seen. It has such a satisfying ending! I never got into One Piece (fell off after a few dozen episodes), but I'm interested in how they're going to visuals of some of the more eccentric aspects going forward.
My daughter had the same reaction so I helped her with which episode to watch in the anime to start after episode 8 But she decided to start with 1st episode. Being a long time One Piece fan this live action was awesome for first time watchers. 😊
Super strength & super speed are not devil fruit powers. In One Piece you get stronger and faster as you develop as a fighter. Luffy's devil fruit only gives him a rubber body. HIs strength comes from his training with Garp.
It's so funny to compare how relatively tame the East Blue Saga really is compared to where the story goes later, from places like Anime Florida to Disneyland from Hell, the locations that Oda came up with for One Piece are truly incredible and insane. Not even to mention some of the crazy af characters you run into, like Anime Eminem or what is basically a Dark Souls boss fight. This story is legit a roller coaster of emotions, so I hope you're strapped in for that ride.
I love all the little tidbits of OG material they kept in the live action. To us longtime fans it means the world. Personally I am really happy One Piece is getting a whole lotta new fans via this medium. Even my 60+ year old mom loved this live action! So now she finally understands why I love the show and Zoro so much xd.
I think the two of you really brought something unique to your reaction series for this show. I've seen a few anime series but I'm not as focused on them as you seem to be. You had some interesting perspectives and insights. All the other reactors I've seen have either limited experience with anime or limited interest in talking in much depth about what they react to.
the "sneak atk" from usopp makes more sense in the anime, he really pretend to die but he regrets soon after because the fishman would go back and get in the way of his friends, that's why he calls him out and atk, the live action cut the part of him getting the courage to fight back out.
As a old manga reader since the beginning of OP in 1997 then Anime in 1999, it's refreshing to see again the new adventure of Luffy's crew in this adaptation. Even they shrink a lot for fit in 8 episodes. They didn't remove the core of the Manga (Thanks Oda for supervising). I saw many reactors who never heard or see OP and they loved it. The prove than even neebies could enter into the Luffy's crew :) You have time to see the anime, S2 gonna out in 2025. The story of S1 show you only a taste of the real story. They show the characters and their backstory (a part only), some powers but not all and also not all the hierarchy of the OP univers. (At the end Mihawk said something about Shanks).
6:35 Also, Zoro has a giant wound on his chest and was near death not long before this fight (which is why he's so exhausted in this fight). They made that a bigger deal in the anime.
It's funny you mentioned going to the theaters and hearing an Avril Lavigne credits song. Avril Lavigne actually did the main theme for One Piece: Film Z, one of the better One Piece animated movies!
Loved this reaction. One thing to think about, Mihawk has a relationship with Shanks, and he actually takes the time to bring Shanks the news about Luffy. That says something about his status in the pirate world as Mihawk is a major player in the world. He does have a kind of homeless, carefree attitude though so I guess he doesnt make a very strong impression. :D
Regarding the soundtrack. It has 79 tracks and 4 hours long. Not bad for a series that is only 8 episodes long. The guy at the end can be seen in the crowd in episode 1. Not a spoiler, just an Easter egg.
I liken any adaptation to trying to paint an oil painting with water colours or crayons. Novels, comic books, manga and anime offer the author completely different sets of tools to engage and grip the audience. And because those tools are vastly different from medium to medium, something that works in one medium doesn't necessarily translate well to another. Take the literary device of the "inner monologue" for example. It's great when you read it in novels, comics and manga, but using it in live action and animation means you are going to lose your audience. So, when adapting the inner monologue you need to find other ways to get your point across. Going back to the analogy: Imagine having the task to paint the Mona Lisa with water colours. How do you do it? You could try to do a one-to-one recreation of the painting but that won't really do justice to the Mona Lisa because oil colours blend in different ways than water colors. What you will get is a pale imitation of the Mona Lisa. This is why most Japanese live-action adaptations don't work by the way. They transfer the source material *exactly* as it is on screen and the result is often not something you can take seriously. So painting the Mona Lisa with water colors doesn't quite work if you do it accurately. What actually works is using the water colors and the base of the Mona Lisa to create in your own way, with your own set of tools, something that invokes the same *feeling* you get while seeing the original Mona Lisa. So the adaptation is now not a question of "how do I translate the original on screen" but rather "what does the original make me feel". Ultimately, what does the original *mean* for me? This is why most Western adaptations don't work. Most of them are made by people who just don't get the source material and in some cases even actively hate it. And their lack of connection shows on screen. The main reason the Cowboy Bebop adaptation didn't work was because it's clear that the people who made it were not fans of the original. They didn't get excited when Spike displayed his unique brand of martial arts on the first episode, almost dancing to Yoko Kanno's iconic music. They didn't laugh at Fay Valentine's introduction. They didn't get shocked when they found out Spike's past. They didn't cry at the final "Bang" on episode 25 and didn't bawl their eyes out when "The real folk blues" was heard one final time on screen. Ultimately, Cowboy Bebop didn't actually *mean* anything to them. It was just a paycheck. And their indifference showed on screen at the abomination that ended up being the end result. Because the people who made the adaptation felt nothing, the audience ended up receiving nothing. If you feel nothing when you look at the Mona Lisa, what are you doing repainting it in the first place? The main reason the live adaptation of One Piece worked was that the source material was important to the people who made it. Matt Owens, the show's writer and producer has gone on record to say that One Piece saved his life and many of the actors involved either were fans of the franchise (Mackenyu & Emily Rudd) or became invested afterwards (Skylar & Godoy). The people who made the Live-Action adaptation of One Piece did a good job of transferring the feeling of reading One Piece on screen because it *meant* something to them. They each put a piece of their love and their soul on screen and the result was something brilliant. They didn't just please old fans they bought new fans into the franchise because they knew One Piece was amazing in its own merits and knew that if they made something that gave you the *feeling* of reading the original One Piece, other people would find it amazing as well. Was the One Piece adaptation perfect? Not by a long shot. It was however a perfect representation of how One Piece actually *feels* and for that it will also have a special place for me. If for nothing else in that it got the people close to me to *finally* understand what was so special about that weird "Japanese super-powered pirate cartoon" I've been watching for the past 20 years. In the end, painting the Mona Lisa with water colours is just not possible. The best you can hope for is for your water painting to bring out the same feelings you had when you looked at the Mona Lisa. If you do it right, your little sibling who bumps into your water drawing will realise that the Mona Lisa is something truly unique and incredible in its own right... ...and will strive to one day look at the Mona Lisa with their own eyes to experience more of the feelings your water drawing brought out from them.

Well, you earned my sub! Thanks so mu h for giving One Piece a shot!!!! Excited for your anime reactions. Suggestion 1: maybe watch more than one episode of the anime at a time. Especially later when the studio drags the story out. Remember the anime is an adaptation too and sometimes they really elongate scenes to pad time. Suggestion 2: there is a fan-made cut of the anime series called “One Pace” that cuts the filler. Personally it’s not as needed in the early arcs of the anime--but it’s NEEDED around episode 400ish when Toei Animation RAMPS UP the pacing issue.

I never got into One Piece (fell off after a few dozen episodes), but I'm interested in how they're going to visuals of some of the more eccentric aspects going forward.
Love the passion in luffys voice in his final attack
Inaki's gutteral Battle Axe has more than done justice to the anime.
My daughter had the same reaction so I helped her with which episode to watch in the anime to start after episode 8 But she decided to start with 1st episode. Being a long time One Piece fan this live action was awesome for first time watchers. 😊
The Arlong battle shows us that Luffy was never really going all in... he was holding back moves, he didn't want to necessarily kill anyone.
10:53 They did that in the anime. Probably no budget or no time to do the underwater scenes
OP is incredible at payoffs
Garp ate the Garp-Garp fruit.
completely misguiding but also TERRIBLY accurate
😂 it's true tho
@@dmanking11 True but I assume people will get it's a joke like you two did xD.
Growth at a Reasonable Price
Is that a Jojo ref?
"And they won't get scurvy" killed me😂😂
Super strength & super speed are not devil fruit powers. In One Piece you get stronger and faster as you develop as a fighter. Luffy's devil fruit only gives him a rubber body. HIs strength comes from his training with Garp.
"Super strength & super speed are not devil fruit powers." Unless you're Jesus Burgess.
That guy at the end is in episode 1 in the beginning when they show shanks n everyone 😊 look for his hair
All the other reactors I've seen have either limited experience with anime or limited interest in talking in much depth about what they react to.
the "sneak atk" from usopp makes more sense in the anime, he really pretend to die but he regrets soon after because the fishman would go back and get in the way of his friends, that's why he calls him out and atk, the live action cut the part of him getting the courage to fight back out.
to be fair to the fishmen, Sanjis kicks are super duper powerful, like can break rock strong
E8
17:50 Garp arrives on cocoyashi village
22:01 Bounty, reactions
26:32 Mihawk-Shanks
29:27 Barrel scene, Smoker tease
I feel like I've seen u before
Carson wearing his Garp Cosplay I see.
The straw hats are just one crew in this big world. Bet other rookie pirate groups have their adventures at this same time
To answer you guy's question , no Garp doesn't have any devil fruit powers. He's just that freakishly strong lol
In this season only 2 people ate devil fruits. Buggy and Luffy.
Garp is just him
Tbh, Alvida probably ate the slippery devil fruit but I think they’ll just use the same actress because this era is woke.
I really enjoyed waatching this series with you two the banter was great
6:35 Also, Zoro has a giant wound on his chest and was near death not long before this fight (which is why he's so exhausted in this fight). They made that a bigger deal in the anime.
Haha, in the fight between Garp and Luffy, Garp was very gentle with him because if Garp wanted to, he would destroy the entire island
A great finale! So excited for season 2 👒But more exciting, is going to be watching your guys journey though out the anime! 🔥🔥
It's funny you mentioned going to the theaters and hearing an Avril Lavigne credits song. Avril Lavigne actually did the main theme for One Piece: Film Z, one of the better One Piece animated movies!
I'm glad y'all started this channel too!
10:51 "why they don't drag people into water to have advantage" well, that's why you watch the anime hahaha.....
ive been watching the anime my whole life and i agree, the live action was done so well its hard to go back.
If you don't know, Netflix is having a remake of the anime show done by WIT Stuido. :)
I enjoyed watching you guys react to this! Your reactions are great! Can’t wait to see more of you guys
40:00 but mihawk came to baratie from the grandline even faster, so you cannot conclude that Mihawk and shanks met in the east blue just because mihawk was in baratie couple days ago. Mihawk is fucking fast. Also, the fact that shanks can even speak to mihawk that way says something to you about him. Put 2 and 2 together cmon
I was so stoked when I saw the closing scene, as knowing one of my favorites who I’ve been hoping for is sure to make an appearance.
30:05 - "Nothing will stand in our way. Smoker, Crocodile, Enel, Aokiji, Rob Lucci, Moriah, Kuma, Kizaru, Magellan, Doflamingo, kaidou and Big Mon laughed at this
broo this show is easily Netflix' best show at least in my opinion. For me it's a 10/10 in every damn aspect 🔥 I as well just started the anime after loving the live action as much as I did and I so far love the anime just as much. I'm just seeing exactly HOW well they adapted the story in live action. Fantastic!b And the advantage I or we're having now is that we're still getting new content from watching the anime! Except for the Garp/ Koby stuff we're getting the same story but told differently but all the things are still there to the tiniest details, which absolutely blows my mind so far!
So glad you guys have enjoyed the Live Action! So excited to follow your journey through the anime. See you at the end when Buggy becomes King of the Pirates! 😉
36:58 in regards to Nam's tattoo, in the Manga, Nami really stabbed the tattoo until it covers in scars. She pretty much just tattooed the new motif on top of it just to cover the old one
Feeding the algorithm. Also can't wait to hear your discussions about the anime.
12:00 She's reading the script 🤣
cant wait for the anime... it's been so long. i hope you guys would do more than one ep for a week.
I would like to know what they are going to give priority to seeing first in the case that the second season of OPLA contains some spoilers for the anime such as Garp's revelation.
Nothing seems better in the end than watching Iñaki laugh with Joy, that guy earned it.
If Mihawk's punching bag is monkeys.. Garps punching bag is mountains😂😂😂😂 and his trainees punching bag is shipwrecks 😅😅😅
❤ your reactions, can`t wait to see your reactions on anime
is there any chance you do a non timer reactions? like full uncut reaction
That last person at the very end is my favorite character
Can't wait for the anime reactions, I wouldn't mind watching them on Patreon but I don't have access
I enjoyed watching your reactions to the show. Can't wait for your reactions to the anime.
Closing with Zoro being protective and finding his place in the crew was a nice catch.
To answer your question at 2:37, Arlong attacked the village because they didn't have enough money for their tribute payment. As we saw with Nami's mother, if someone doesnt have the money, Arlong is going to kill/destroy.
Your avril lavigne comment is so perfect because she sang for one of the ending songs for one of the One Piece movies bruh
Yup its JUST THE BEGINNING GANG
Shanks definitely not washed. 😂😂😂
Yeah, he just likes his parties and beign hungover all the time. ^^
thats a genuine statement cause in manga and anime fishmans used their waters for their advantages to fight straw hats but in live action they didnt touch it i assume for cost saving perpuses
Another great reaction. Can't wait for the anime reactions
Much love for watching one piece , its a pretty dark show but also a very lighthearted show as youll soon find out. Take your time and pace yourselves.
Theres no reason catch up and binge like a madman.
funny enough the filler in one piece anime has canon and non canon episodes so its important which filler episode you can skip
2:38 villagers did not pay enough for that month, remember?
You gotta understand that invincible also had so much less budget than this show did. One piece had a massive budget to it (17.27 million per episode ) which allowed it to have so many hype shots and sick action
It isn't abt that
They like both shows they just saying they prefer one piece way more over invincible
I cant wait to see you guys react to the anime too! I think you guys will have fun with it 😋
Well, you earned my sub!
It's funny Carson mentioned Avril Lavigne singing the end credits to a movie, because that's exactly what happened for One Piece Film Z
🎉 CONGRATULATIONS! 🎉
You finished the One Piece Live Action!
Or the 1st season of it anyway 👀
Can't wait for the eventual season 2 of this!
Great reaction/discussion as always 💜
I am looking forward to your overall discussion video for the show as a whole
BUT also can't wait for your anime reactions and for you guys to compare/contrast
Mihawk and shanks are in the new world other half of grandline.
This is only 1% of One Piece greatness.
Good reaction :)
Garp just has the fist of love lol
Shanks is in the grandline, mihawk comes in and out of the grandline for fun, no one knows how he does that. Look up the explanation for the Calm Belt and draw your own conclusions
Season 2 will hopefully start with Loguetown and then them accidentally sailing into the calm belt
