Burgess Meredith was a damn national treasure, lol. Pretty much the entire cast is, but his antics and outtakes just blew away everyone else in both movies, lol.
Fact's
I read that one of the crew had written lines for Burgess Meredith so he can do his lines knowing he was suffering Alzheimer's Disease. This movie was his last before his death in 1997 at the age of 89.
I believed that script made it for Burgess' Pop die in this movie due to his health issues.
@@MrTech226 from what I’ve heard it was done at BM’s request….. he knew he was dying and wanted the chance to say thank you and goodbye to everyone (not just the actors writers and fans of this franchise but everyone throughout his very long career) he also didn’t want the franchise to falter because of his real life death without his character dying
When it comes to the elder statesmen of film Burgess Meredith and Wilford Brimley are my favorites, along with Lemon and Matthau.
"I know I'm no great prize, but I'm loyal, I'm honest, and I know how to treat a lady." I love that line. It was that moment when Max really took John's advice and was just himself. Not goofy and awkward trying to impress her. Just honest and open.
Jack Lemon is such a great actor. The look of pain on his face when he finds Burgess Meredith’s character dead looks so real.
R.I.P. to the incredible Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Burgess Meredith, all three were awesome in both of the Grumpy Old Men films.😂👍
I love Matthau and Lemon together. The Odd Couple is one of my all time favorite comedies. But their "grumpy" movies are awesome as well.

Burgess was such an amazing talent. God, I miss him.
When Pops died, it wasn't a shocking, out of the blue moment. He went peacefully, probably in his sleep, in an idyllic setting.
It was a gentle moment, not a heartwrenching one.

If we are talking about Burgess Meredith that wonderful man was in like at least 42 movies. In real life he was in World War II in the Air Force as a Captain. In the 1978 Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn movie "Foul Play" Burgess Meredith has a real knock out drag out amazing fight scene in it.
Speaking of World War II there is an excellent B&W short film he did around World War 2 advising visiting US servicemen on the dos and donts when visiting an English pub….
Burgess meredith is the best thing about this movie, it's a shame he didn't have more screen time. He was comedic gold
They were already pretty much coaching him due to his advancing Alzheimer's. They were lucky to get what they did out of him.
When I first saw this whenever it was rentable (either 95 or 96) Pop's death was the first time a movie ever made me cry. I was around 14-15 so I didn't put it together that him saying at the beginning "I think God forgot about me." was foreshadowing anything (I wasn't as well versed in movies as I am today) so that came out of nowhere for me and hit me like a ton of bricks.
Grumpy Old Men and Grumpier Old Men compliment each other wonderfully, right down to the change of season. That chemistry between Lemmon and Matthau was magic.
I was hoping you would get to this one. Pops Gustavsson remains my spirit animal.

I was about 12 when this movie came out. I actually memorized the entire speech Burgess Meredith made about outliving the health experts. He was easily my favorite thing about this movie. As for which one's better... it's honestly about even for me. I love em both.
I enjoyed both the same. This was a good follow-up to the 1st one. They did another movie together called Out to Sea.
The line "Looks like God remembered you pops" hits me. The way it was delivered as almost a whisper, damn.
Another good movie starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau is “The Fortune Cookie (1966). Matthau won his first Academy Award for it. Also another movie you should watch (if you haven’t already) is “The Batman Movie (1966)” in which Burgess Meredith plays The Penguin.
Bacon. A whole damn plate.
Another favorite Matthau movie of mine is the original Bad News Bears....

Emily: Since you enjoy Burgess Meredith so much, you really might love the movie Foul Play. First of all, the leads are Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn, who are really quite good together. And then there's Burgess, as the landlord of Goldie's building, and he's very good in this. A character full of surprises. And overall it's just a fun movie, with adventure and mysteries and twists. Chevy and Goldie were also the leads in Seems Like Old Times, another highly entertaining flick from the 80s.

I watched this movie with my dad and I thought HE was going to die laughing at the Burgess Meredith outtakes.
Burgess Meredith was suffering from severe Alzheimers and had to be coached on his lines during this movie. I read that was part of the reason they wrote Pops death into the movie.

@@robertsmith3883 it’s true actually except, perhaps, for the severe part. This was his last movie and he died less than two years after it’s release, of Alzheimer’s.

I love the Grumpy Old Men movies. The 2 Grumpy Old Men movies have a certain, lovely, warm charm to them. For example, I love how the scenery of the state of Minnesota is practically a co-star.
In Grumpy Old Men we get to see how nice Minnesota looks with all that snow and ice. And in Grumpier Old Men we get to see what it looks like underneath all that snow and ice. Just beautiful. The small hometown feel also really adds to the charm. Makes one want to move there to live and hopefully have Max, John, Pop, and Ariel (and all the others) as neighbors.
She is totally going to cry.

The Odd Couple is one of my all time favorite comedies. But Lemon and Matthau are always a great match up.
The bakery scene was filmed in my old neighborhood. I watched on as the crew was filming.
Walter Matthau and Jack Lemon were a great comedy couple... just like Richard Pryor and Gene Wilder were... The chemistry between some actors / comedians. Oh, even the cast of The Cannonball Run... You can tell when a comedy cast enjoy each others company... I really wish there were more of this type and slap stick comedy content in our current times... You two are great and I can't help but laugh along with you...
The outtakes are just as good as the movie.

I grew up and still live in the area where this movie was filmed. I just got back today from a weekend on my brothers houseboat on Lake Pepin.

When i saw the name Lon Chaney Jr, i immediately thought he was the Phantom of the Opera, but I wrong. That was his father
Until I went back and seen the credits, I didn’t realize that Jack Lemon’s dad was played by Burgess Meredith, the same guy that played Mickey in Rocky! His last movie, as he died less than two years later
So many legends in this, shame all the guys have passed.
The Cast is so perfect in this. I hope to live old enough so I can start acting like Burgess Meredith in this film...

I haven’t seen the movie since it first came out. I was 18, so I got the jokes, but I totally forgot how many gut busting jokes it had. I can’t think of a recent movie that had so many solid laughs in such a short time. Great pick.

Got a movie that is possibly one neither of you have seen. "STUDENT BODIES" 1981. I've only found a couple of people that have seen it. Low budget horror comedy, heavy on the comedy.

If you like Burgess Meredith, you should check out "A Big Hand for the Little Lady". It's a great movie with a number of stars from the 60s. Burgess has a small, but important roll in this film.

If you want a FUN Ann Margaret movie. "THE VILLAIN" with her and Arnold Schwarzeneggar in his first Hollywood production movie in which he is dubbed because he could hardly speak English. Kirk Douglas is The VIllain and its about the stereotypes its a Road Runner vs Coyote story come to life. I hope you see this I know this is from a year ago. It is totally up your alley.

I liked this movie as well, but some of the jokes seemed recycled.
The last movie Lemmon and Matthau appeared in was the Odd Couple II (which by the way was ok).
There is also a movie called My Fellow Americans that was written to star Lemmon and Matthau but Matthau was unable to appear in the movie, so James Garner took his place. My Fellow Americans was a decent comedy/thriller movie
