Great analysis! Your 3 points are bang and on presented in a great framework and ordering. You honestly and accurately discussed the power difference, and noting that there can be rivals with a power difference, and thus looking at other factors. Fantastic :) Namor was one of my favs as well, depending. He has been changed quite a bit, where at least some makes sense considering a lot of writing prior to or during the 70s wasn't very 'serious' in some ways. I think versions like that of the 90s, which focused on being a protector of the seas is the best, which is obvious. Around that time Namor used sunken treasures to fund buying Oracle Inc., and battled for the waters against the likes of Roxxon both physically and financially/lawfully. So when they do the plots about Atlantis or Namor invading the surface, the one's that focus more on cleaning up messes and b/s are better than just pure conquest. (Neither of those are noble though; even the former example is like Thor and Asgard saying the universe is a mess, therefore they must rule).
I knew this was going to be good and you did not disappoint. Excellent analysis! This video should be required reading to writers writing Thor and Namor in a story! Two thumbs up!
It’s good to see a channel going Thor proper respect. In my opinion it seems since the mid 80’s or so there has been a gradual nerfing of Thor. I remember when the Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy along with Captain Mar-Vell went against Korvac (and later Carina) and Thor was literally the last one standing.
Before I watch, my two uninfluenced cents for comparison. My sad opinion is that when written decently and in the "ideal world" they'd at most have only a sporty rilvary, and likely be allied monarchs/royals. I mean, right there they've so much in common yet in different flavors, you can only expect the two to have some kind of "gentleman's" respect for one another if not friendship and understanding. Not only both avengers, both far longer lived than at least one set of their friends, both far above and beyond their peers, both have a foot in humanity of some kind and another into a much more hyper world, both have a history with temper and "pride" (more like social vanity + other issues), and so on. You could have a return to a Kirbiesque arsgard with Antlantean's helping their buddies rebuild their city magi-tech style while doing a visual upgrade to the rest of asgard to fit modern comic art styles better, and maybe make Namor a bit closer to poseidon and the godly realms so you could take him and antlantean in a more mythic or cosmic direction where he can really let lose and get into themes that only really work for immortal-quasi immortal ultra powerful beings. So in the ideal world, the issue is that it wouldn't make sense beyond a lukewarm rilvary, not much more than Thor has with the hulk (another guy who honestly would make far more sense to write as a friend... ironically like they did in the MCU to some extend, regardless of how one feels about the execution the high concept of how they went with the two makes sense - the one person who sees Hulk as hardly anything out of his ordinary, and who hulk knows there is he doesn't need to walk on eggs because he couldn't accidentally mist that guy like a normal human and in fact is the guy who could prevent the hulk from doing something regretable when he loses it... yes, why aren't these two closer in comics either in so many years, go figure). Honestly, give me these three amigos in a mythological version of "Cosmic Marvel" where these heavy hitters can just go nuts with their bullshit powers, against absurd foes that make their time as avengers look as a mere past time hobby. But in reality, they keep fucking up the writting of Thor with so many inconsistencies, and in the last 10-15 years they've managed to basically nuke Namor so bad he makes Thor look consistent as fuck by comparison. So yeah, can't develop shit right like that, be it some kid of friendship or rivalry. Just what happens when you let creative hacks and manager first types freely run the creative side of the company.
Would be more like a slaughter. Better fight would be Asgard vs Wakanda and Atlantis. He eventually realized that was a dick move, and rewound time, which he could do at that time.
Glad you think they’re interesting. I guess I just like researching and analyzing things that interest me in my free time and those things are often Thor related
As much as the REAL NAMOR MACKENZIE is my favorite marvel character since 1984..I may add.....ITS KINDA LIKE PRIME MIKE TYSON fighting FLOYD MAYWEATHER JR. Thor being MIKE TYSON of course.
What was strange about these encounters was that neither Cap nor Namor remembered each other despite having both been members of the Invaders. Namor also didn't remember being on the All Winner Squad with the Spirit of 76, who took up the mantle of Captain America nor of the Patriot who took up the mantle afterwards. The Serpent Crown had wiped his memory but Johnny Storm got him to remember who he was, strangely enough this didn't include memories of Cap.
I'm actually surprised that in death battle they didn't put Namor up against Vegeta. Thor doesn't have the same attitude as Namor and thematically a rivalry with Vegeta would make more sense.
@renji0002 Namor matched savage Hulk briefly and savage Hulk is way below regular Hulk who's in turn way below World Breaker Hulk. Broly based on the analysis at the time was millions to billions of times more powerful than World Breaker Hulk(even though based on current analysis, he would probably be close). Always thought Iron Man vs Namor was a much better rivalry. Thor vs Namor doesn't work narratively for all the reasons you stated. But Iron Man vs Namor has been a classic.
Namor, when he fought the Fantastic Four demonstrated the ability to absorb an electric shock and return it to an opponent like an Electric Eel. Strangely enough he never used this ability against Thor when it would prove the most useful.
It's a shame the power gap is so massive, i wouldn't mind seeing them be on more equal grounds. As much as i love OP Thor, it's also exciting to see him be less powerful like in "Thor, the Mighty Avenger" without ruining his character.

It's interesting how The thing has a rivalry with the hulk but I remember when he encountered Juggernaut. Jugs hit him one time and Thing says juggernaut was out of his league
Great analysis. I got a couple of questions. 1. Do you think Thor's ability to wrestle Namor out of water is due to his personal strength or due to the power flight power of Mjolnir? 2. Why is Herc vs Namor different as in it works compared to Thor vs Namor?
1. Probably more due to Thor’s strength. Thor doesn’t appear to use Mjölnir when he lifts Namor out of the water in Atlantis Rising. Plus Namor can fly too and his swimming is good enough to keep him underwater unless he’s overpowered. 2. The Namor and Hercules is different due to Herc’s temperament. Hercules is much more immature than Thor and is more willing to have a friendly battle. Thor and Hercules have a strong rivalry in part because Herc considers it good fun to fight his friend. Whereas Thor is too noble to fight Namor for fun, Hercules has no problem fighting, joking, and messing with Namor. They’re close friends, but Hercules has a unique brand of friendship
I would honestly love to see a team up between Namor and Thor, where Namor convinces Thor he should rule the surface world because Earth would be better off and Asgard and Atlantean armies attempt to conquer Earth
It wasn’t actually Stalin. After killing him, Thor found out it was actually an ally of the Invaders disguised as Stalin. Even if he was the real Stalin, Thor probably would have revived him. Thor killed Stalin because Hitler told him to and when Thor realized who Hitler was, he didn’t want to give him what he wanted. Also keep in mind, Thor has no idea who Stalin is
Thor has so many more feats than Namor and really shouldn’t have any issue with him if he isn’t holding back. Thor is a lot stronger than Namor in the comics, the MCU I still think Thor wins relatively easily.
The problème is also the fact that the Hulk not a streng consitent du to the stage of how he is angry wich is a scènaristique excuse to why The Thing can fight him. Namor can make Sentry bleed but characteres like Hercule and Thor are depicted to have a no limit streng like everytime and Thor is show to fight Galactus alone. He has to spend equally amounts of time on land and sea to maintain his "balance". Thor and Namor aren't rivals, never really have been. Friends fight sometime, and that is shown here with them. This is ridiculously biased in favor for Thor and leaving out a LOT of facts that put this in an entirely different context. First, I will admit that Thor is unquestionably stronger than Namor when Namor is on land and not at full power. His base strength on land is Class 85 which is the same class as the Thing, which was shown in that strength chart, but Namor’s strength is a direct rival of Thor’s, at least in raw strength, if not overall power, when Namor is at full power. I am sure that being on a Thor fan site, all the fanboys will flame me for speaking the truth, but at least I can counter your and their points with facts. First, while in AVENGERS #3, Namor was on land when fighting Thor and the as weakening, the SAGA OF THE SUB-MARINER series revealed that it was a much more drawn out and back and forth battle than the original panel showed in AVENGERS #3 before the Hulk intervened. In AVENGERS #3, Namor had a clear and decisive win against the Hulk by at least TKO when he took their fight into the water and beat Iron Man and Giant Man on land. In AVENGERS #4, Namor was able to go toe to toe with Thor in single combat on land and even managed to disarm him, pulling the hammer out of his hands. Though as you stated, Namor couldn’t lift it due to Odin’s enchantment. In the SUB-MARINER fight, it was clear that Namor, being Ben Grimm level in strength, knew that he would not over power Thor on land, but used hit and run tactics to draw Thor away and to the river. He didn’t expect that he would be fighting blind there. Thor didn’t overpower Namor there, he outmaneuvered an opponent who could not see. In INVADERS #33, it was clearly stated that despite being in the rain, “Namor had been too long from the sea and was not at full power.”. Some writers have portrayed Namor at full power by merely being wet, others have written him at full power only when submerged and stronger in the sea. From that statement in that very issue, it’s obvious that Roy Thomas (the author) was on the side of him being not at full power. Besides that, in THOR CORPS #4, through time travel, Beta Ray Bill (Thor’s exact physical equal in power) took Thor’s place in the same scene and Namor did to Beta Ray Bill exactly what Thor did to Namor in the original scene. Namor one shotted Beta Ray Bill in the rain. Speaking of one shot wins, Namor was only out of the fight for a few panels in the fight in INVADERS #33 and though you downplayed the fight between Namor and Thor in the AVENGERS when Marina became the Leviathan, but Namor one shotted Thor there and he was out of the battle longer there than Namor was in the INVADERS fight. In ATLANTIS RISING, the creative team was clearly showing that while Namor was still competitive with Thor in the air, Thor had the advantage and Namor was dominating Thor in his own element. Also, when the amped Namor more recently fought Thor and the Avengers, Thor did have his replacement hammer, but Thor himself was at his regular strength levels. Namor caught his hammer swing and Iron Man’s punch simultaneously and casually and was beginning to crush his hammer until the other Avengers intervened. The Masters Edition of the MU Handbook had both Thor and Namor as exact physical equals across the board on their stats; strength, speed, durability, endurance and fighting skill when Namor is at full power. In NAMOR #58, Hercules admitted that Namor “is stronger under the sea” than he is. Hercules has always maintained that he is slightly stronger than Thor. And both the original MU Handbook and the Masters Edition has said the same thing. Namor has also physicality overpowered the Hulk under water when the Hulk was given the ability to breathe and function underwater like an Atlantean in Hulk#118.
@@Dynamo001 Wrong Lumpy. The Deluxe Edition of the MU Handbook listed Namor as “at least 85 tons in water and 40 tons on land. Which might be on whatever website you’re referencing this from. Thor was originally rated at the 95 ton level. By the UPDATE’89 version of the same edition Marvel had acknowledged that Namor was Class 100 in water or while on land and wet. The MASTERS EDITION that came out after that had Namor as having exactly the same stats as Thor when in water including Class 100 strength, but also in combat speed, durability, fighting skills and the whole nine yards. It was stated that he could drop down as low as Class 50 if sufficiently dehydrated. More recent MU Handbook Editions have ranked Namor’s normal strength on land as Class 85 (rivaling the Thing’s) and Class 100 on land while wet. They also said that Namor’s strength was “virtually matchless” when he was under the sea.” Several writers have expressed that Namor is stronger when submerged than just wet and others didn’t make a distinction. This is not a retcon though, back in the sixties and seventies, there were several writers that said in continuity and editors that said in the letters pages that Namor was basically Thing level in strength on land (though it could drop even lower over extremely long periods cut off from water or artificially dehydrated) and Hulk level in water or while wet. Back when Stan Lee, the creator of the Marvel Universe was also the man in charge of the company and it’s highest source, he wrote a book called MARVEL’S GREATEST SUPERHERO BATTLES. He clearly described in that book how “Namor’s strength actually rivaled that of the Hulk”. Lee, after explaining the Hulk’s strength/rage dynamic in detail, he also clearly stated that Namor’s “strength was indeed the equal of the Green Goliath” (savage Hulk). This was the decade before any of the early editions of the MU Handbook came out and they created the Class strength system. Over the last decade , several of the powerhouses like the Hulk, Thor and Namor were given significant power ups. To the best of my knowledge, Namor’s was never fully explained, but he was significantly stronger than a normal Thor while underwater. He caught a hammer blow from Thor and a punch from Iron Man simultaneously without any strain and was beginning to crush Thor’s replacement hammer, as stated by Thor himself until the other Avengers interceded. Just as the powered up version of Sentry, Hulk and She Hulk were notably above normal Thor and Hercules, so was Namor. Though even with his power up, Namor would still be no match for Thor with his father’s power and especially with the Power Cosmic added to that. You might want to research a bit more before posting that someone a lot better informed about a subject is wrong.
@@DavidHughesKJN On the contrary, fanboy ... Namor isn't Thor's level, despite getting an upgrade or in water, so save all of that flip-flap. He is weaker out of water, and gets weaker the longer he is out, so he could still drop down to 40-ton level.
IM, at least back then, was def not above Namor. All feats from both of them show that, esp when they fight each other. IM only beats Namor when he pulls a 'Batman vs Supes prep' scenario. Remember that time during an Illuminati gathering, when Stark pissed off Namor, they threw down, Namor was doming his ass easily, and they needed Dr S to use his ridiculous magic to bitch them both up? Yea, Namor stomps IM on the regular.
Yeah definitely, the Marvel tier list with Iron Man above Namor specifically says it’s only when Tony uses all his power at once and that he can only keep that level up for ten seconds before his armor runs out. I remember in an issue around this time, Tony knocked out the Hulk while using this technique so that’s probably why they decided to put him in the same tier as Hulk
Namor could really use a more commonly used magic weapon to try and bridge the gap.

Wrong. Namor is around 40 tons on land, and 85 tons in water. He is stronger in the water, but still not at Thor's level.
Thor doesn't even stand a chance here. Namor wins in a *slimy fish slap.*
Nice weed
Because everyone still cant ignore the time Thor accidentally koed Namor with an accidental pimp hand.
