Like I liked them, they're both good films... but no Oscar worthy in my opinion. But those might be issues I have with the directing not being all that distinct rather than the editing itself, as well as more or less justified hangups I have with the writing. I don't know.

    Thomas, there's a question I'd like to ask Chloe Zhao about her editing of "Nomadland," and it's based on her screenplay, which can be downloaded. The script ends with the "Searchers" shot of Fern walking out of that house for the last time. The movie ends with one additional shot of the van driving to her next destination. And I've wondered at what point she, as the film editor, felt she needed to add that driving shot. The shadowy house shot certainly FEELS like a "final shot," and both suggest an ongoing, uncertain future. It's a deliberate editing decision, and I'd love to know that rationale.

    • @HarrisonDillingham
      @HarrisonDillingham 3 года назад +2

      I've thought about this as well, and I think those choices stem from a few factors. What filmmakers think WILL work often doesn't, and what DOES work sometimes isn't enough. Sometimes more is needed, and in Nomadland's case, Chloe's choice to end with the shot following the van marks a venture onward for Fern--no matter where she goes, the road is ever turning, sights ever present.
      Another example that comes to mind is the last shot in Dunkirk, how Lee Smith chose to end on our hero rather than the burning plane. To some, this may seem extremely tacked on with nothing to say at all, when in reality, this choice represents something so profound. With a simple look out the window and the audible swipe to the next page of a newspaper, our hero has moved on to the next chapter in his life, awaiting anything that could come next after the harrowing events at Dunkirk--hence the choice to end here.

    Sound Of Metal deserved the win. The editing was super crucial to immerse the audience in the protagonists experience with such a sense of immediacy. The very changes and drastic evolution in the protagonist’s experience had to be in tandem in when we realise these changes.

      @@ThomasFlight Yeah, that was my thinking too. It's an above average movie that is good on its own merits, but not very memorable when compared to other releases good or bad. I guess like the Green book, but I like the Green Book a lot less than Trial.

    The Meaning of NERD
    or KaptainKristian

    Wait a sec. Weren’t those really fast time jumps in TTOTC7 between scenes that are directly related to each other exactly what Sorkin was doing with Fincher in the social network 11 years ago?? Hardly seems like ambitious editing nowadays

    • @ThomasFlight
      @ThomasFlight  3 года назад +1

      It's not really intercutting to flashbacks that's ambitious, it's more the speed at which Chicago 7 does it. It's a technique that's been around a while, but Chicago 7 turns up the intensity on how fluidly and quickly those moments are intercut. That said, yeah, I don't think Chicago 7's editing is revolutionary or anything, I wasn't trying to insinuate that, it's just pretty good.
