I always felt like the animal asthetic was kinda wasted on some characters. I think you perfectly showed the potential that more animal inspired designs have. Love it!
Honestly, the biggest mistake Thomas made with this costume (aside from designing it this way in the first place) was telling the audience that wielders could change their costumes. If he hadn't added that for two plots that both didn't really matter and that no one really cares about, he could have left us with 'oh well, when Mari first transformed she wasn't ready and didn't know what this all meant so now she's stuck with this design forever' but now that we know she isn't stuck with it, it's awful that it never changes. A costume that changes depending on who the wearer is and becomes is a great way to signify growth or even regression (and I'm gonna use it in my rewrite because it's such a brilliant concept) but as we know, Thomas is as allergic to good ideas as I am to 🐂💩
Exactly And besides, mari is literally a aspiring fashion designer so if she can change her costume it would only make sense for her to have a well designed one, not the plain one she has
the outfit that ladybug has in the show may be cute but they could so much a better job with designing her hero costume. Since Marinette is half chinese half french then they could mix the ladybug aspect with some chinese or french fashion while making it still a western superhero outfit or something qwq
Looks really good! Compared to the original I think adding something into the design to resemble wings really does work, like how Scarabella had that skirt overhang that resembled wings.
Your redesign is fantastic!! One of my personal favorites! It amazes me how fans and non-fans are better at designing, writing and world-building for this show than the actual creator (I can think of a few reasons why this is, but it’s still weird, and as a creative myself it kinda makes me sad for him, even tho he’s a very not nice person).
I had created OCs who are the future holders of the cat and ladybug miraculous. They're also Adrien and Marinette's kids. When it comes to mixing my characters and the show, I just want to know what happens to the storyline. Once I know the canon ending, I can write everything else 😅
I Think that the real miss oportunity here, is that the main reason why ladybug's outfit is like that is because the show is in a 3D animation render and is done in a industrial process so this makes the models become more simpler, but that is no excuse because the show was supossed to be 2d but the main thing that made the show become 3d was ladybug's pattern who was easier to work with in 3D render, and on that note i say... WHY NOT MAKE LADYBUG CHANGE THE PATTERNS OF HER OUTFIT ?! this would be such a simple change who would make more doll possibilities, more marketing ideas, and still a thing that makes sense, ladybug possibly wants a outfit who would be comfortable for fighiting so i dont mind the spandex, but my god, there are orange ladybugs, there is also possible patterns who focus more in the black or others who would even include white so i think that the biggest miss oportunity is be creative with the thing that is easy to change, the pattern, EVEN ALYA DID THIS for rena furtive.... i really dislike the idea that both gabriel and marinette are fashion designers and they can't think of creative like... in the words of miranda presley "Red and Black dots for ladybug ? how original".
I really like your redesign! So much better than the original. I do know that in the Ladybug PV, there were alternate ladybug designs for PV Marinette because the animators didn't want to animate so many spots, but Thomas Astruc was so set on the whole red and black spots so the animators only did the black spots to the waist up. They even gave PV Marinette a golden chain for her yoyo, which it's a nice touch and callback for Sailor Venus.

I don't mind Marinette's Ladybug costume being too simple and bland. However, my biggest issues with her base costume is that she's still too recognizable! Like come on even in her Ladybug outfit she still looks like Marinette. 😤🤦♂️
Personally I prefer shadybug's outfit before reformation over ladybugs at least it's different and the red streak in black twin hair buns like sailor moons hair buns to me is more interesting but that's my opinion also it fits the ladybug esthetic even if shadybug is a tad aggressive gothic but to me it's a nicer design 😊
I think another problem with the Ladybug suit is that there is no real point of focus. A lot of the videos i've seen discussing character design say it's important to design the character in a way that directs the audience to the character's face or chest. Because Ladybug's costume is just one pattern we can't really focus on anything. Other costumes that favor simplicity achieve this. For example, Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider costume was designed to be functional with a light blue hoodie over a red fullbody suit and our eyes lock on to the hoodie.
I was never a fan of simplistic designs (though I admit they work well for some heroes who have short-range powers or no powers at all), so seeing a more stylized approach is appreciated. I hope you do Chat Noir next! The black cat look is overdone.
I absolutely love this redesign! I really think you did her jusitce. But my only problem with it is the overly long exaggerated antennas. This could be a huge issue during fight scenes because the villains could just pull her antenna as an advantage.

I do like your redesign. The idea of a cape in the shape of ladybugs wings is very cool. But there is one thing I can't get behind. The bottom of the suit is a solid black which makes it look unbalanced when compared with the more visually dynamic top. Matching shorts or a matching belt with boots, in a ladybug print, would elevate the look.
I may add, it's a detail that's also present on Alou's characters, her face area has some nice shading (blush on cheeks, lighting on hair) going on (even the ears technically have some as well), but the dress is all flat colours. I don't mind if you don't want it looking very 3D, I've gotten tired of it sometimes too, but some good cartoon styling never gets old.
🪡🧵 Designing outfits can be a challenge. I've learnt a lot through trying to design a outfit and look for my vtuber model. Not only that, but I've watched a lot of videos discussing the topic. And that's just for vtubers. Magical girls is its own genre of design. So props to you for trying your hand at it!

This design is so cute! I love how the red of her suit looks like a little jacket, and the cape immediately makes her look so buggy (making it shorter in the final version was a great idea, keeps her looking sporty) However, there’s two issues I can see, only in the coloring. The inside of the cape is the same color as her arms and torso, which makes them blend together and will hurt readability. Also, having her suit’s main color be black means that both main characters wear entirely or mainly black skintight bodysuits… It wouldn’t be an issue if she was a side character or they weren’t superheroes, but as characters that will share action scenes, they need distinct colors. Recognizability is key with superheroes. If I were to recolor her, I’d move the black to the inside of the cape. Ladybug wings are black with a really cool texture so incorporating that texture could be a neat idea! Then, I’d either extend her red past her cape to look like a romper (cape might be too long for that, though) or change the black to something else (maybe a dull teal?) or but I’d definitely keep her feet as black (as boots or a gradient like her hands, since the white spots are really buggy and I’d want to keep them) But that’s just my design habits. I’m totally biased because I also have a ladybug based secret identity character design but she’s a fantasy alien drag queen so maybe a bit different…

Now it got me thinking about designs and ideas. The ladybug costume is super basic, but I never really cared enough to refute. That said, I agree that the update with the charms should have been standard. It's very Spiderman and thus in theme. But maybe, for a temporary upgrade, it could lean in more on the magical girl side. I'm thinking black body suit (to keep theme), red boots, red gauntlets/gloves, and maybe a sleeveless coat with the ladybug pattern? Maybe keep the cape as a defensive option like how Batman's cape can stop bullets. I'm just spitballing here, honestly.

🪡 I really love the idea you used for the identity conceal! When you mentioned that the characters in-show would see something different, I imagined that they'd look like a different character that would still be a regular human, but the animalistic fusion is actually such a clever idea! I really love this design, it's great how you managed to keep the simplicity while making it a TON more interesting to look at! The white spots are a nice touch. Nice job on this! ^^
Tbh for a ladybug superhero you would kinda have to add a cape-since w/o it , itd just look like a person with a dotted suit , the cape really does help give off the ladybug vibe
I love the design overall! I love the white spots on her gloves and legs that is taken from irl ladybugs that have those tiny white spots, but in her case can also make it seem like a glimmering sparkle in a way. she is after all a fashion designer I love her un capped suit with how simple and effective it looks and the way you add some white to her neck area, bringing in some balance. I guess my critisms would first be the Antenna? its too distracting because its so long and Jester-like, but also the way its so long and bent like that makes it look like a cockroach's than a ladybugs and also about her cape wing, yes its shaped like a ladybug but its so big and bulky that it also feels distracting becaue her main suit is already red with black dots, and her cape being red makes it hard to see her main. Nothing wrong with big capes but a big cape needs to visually not distract the eyes from the main suit, like how superman's suit is. his main outfit is Blue so it stood out amongst his red cape. Or how mysterio has a green suit and a red cape. I think a cape needs to highlight the suit instead of blending in? also I think the long antenna and bulky big cape combined kinda makes a distracting silouette? I suggest either have a long Antenna and a shorter cape or a Big cape but smaller antenna for balance. Hairstyle wise yes its like a ladybug but ... I feel like she looks more mature than a 13-14 year on in this one? but at the same time im not sure what hairstyle to suggest, perhaps something with braids to give her a youthful look but still different silouette than her civillian form? I really hope I didnt come across as snobby or anything! or if my words are too blunt (English is not my first language, so I translate Indonesian directly to english in my brain) and I hope maybe this input helps in the future, and I wish you luck with your AU!

I know for my designs of Ladybug, it varies from au to au, but I’ll use my rewrites version, the Tales from the Grimoire version of Ladybug as an example of what I’d change. First, I’d ditch the pigtails all together and give her a loose ponytail, with the ribbon tying it up acting as antennae. I’d also make her eyes gold, darker hair, and a mask more reminiscent of ladybug wings. I like the design Astruc had made with black arms and boots, so I kept that. I also gave Ladybug more of a utility belt look to her yoyo, with gold compartments like on her pv design which in my opinion could house light energy she uses for different types of attacks other than the lucky charm. Precanon has this cool metal and magic thing with Maribug and Felichat respectively, and I absolutely love it!
I made a costume for my AU too, the hair and ribbons are longer like the PV version, the costume is a bit similar to one of the concepts for this version, and the collar has a curved v-cut to look like the collar of chinese clothes, along with a button with a ladybug print like the one she has in the updated costume.
I think you did a great job making her costume! I love your art style and how you do shading. You add just enough to be pleasing but not so much where it becomes overwhelming. Hope your having a good year. 🙂🪡
I know I'm late but-... Since I'm working on my own Miraculous AU (basically a rewrite but whatever), I also changed the heroes designs a lot. That includes Ladybug. I feel like one thing I really wish was included in Ladybug's design is that it had some Chinese aspects to it. Maybe have her hair really long with a bun ponytail of sorts with hair bodkins and if you want a flower (maybe like a sakura flower or a lotus flower). Kind of want to add in like sort of wings to it that are kind of like a cape or something. Plus her outfit would look somewhat like a traditional Chinese outfit. Plus I kind of wanna add in yellow golds or something. I doubt I'll go overboard with the spots. Also btw only now I mention in it but I want to give her either dark blue hair or like a light blue hair. Can't decide yet. That's probably just my idea for her design. Also love the redesign
Looking at the updated design I don't know how I feel about it. It does look really good though. Its mainly the red cape on red torso for me. Maybe I'd like it more without the cape. I'm not super against her outfit though. Her and chat noir have simple costumes. together I think they look fine. I like Her upgraded look, but I hate that it's not permanent, and also that cat noir doesn't have an update to match. I also think Mr bug handled that well. Any amount of black to break up the design would be fine, which your design does do.
Yes, finally! I thought I was alone on this! The problem with Ladybugs design is that there is WAAAY too much red in her costume. I was taught that the color red is meant to be used sparingly or must compliment the other colors so it doesn't clash. There are two characters that come to mind that pull both of these designs off well. Kiyotaka Ishimaru (Danganronpa) who uses the color red sparingly, and Diamant (FE Engage) who uses the color red, but that shade of red is toned down and compliments the rest of the design extremely well. Ladybug does...neither. The shade of red is too bright. There is way too much of it. The black spots are somehow just as bright as the shade of red which makes it worse, and there are no other design pieces (like braclets, gems, scarfs, or even a skirt) to make the design not as much as an eye sore to look at. Whats strange to me is I read somewhere that ML was inspired by sailor moon. If the creators used a design similar to something from that show with hints of red here or there. I can almost guarantee it would have done wonders for her design. Thats just my take on the matter anyway.

My personal opinion about the orignial ladybug suit: it doesn't look bad, its just not enough for a main character. Like if the ladybug miraculous was only for a side character, I would see no problem, using that suit. But not for a main character.
I've made two Ladybug redesigns in my time, one for a special little project and one that I was gonna use for an animatic but I haven't gotten around to making yet lol. The animatic one is actually slipping my mind 😭 but I do remember the special little project one. I took a similar approach with the all black base and red, spotted bolero(?). She has the same collar as the show's lucky charm costume but it's trimmed in gold instead of black (because LadyBee looks chef's kiss). She has thigh high boot cover things with small spots on her knees and ballet flats and her chest and thighs are wrapped in gold ribbon. Her hair's darker and in a bun and she also has large, antenna-like ribbons. Instead of making her face more bug like, we made her mask look more like a ladybug's face. But this design focuses less on hiding who she is cause that's not what we need for this project but still leagues better than red with black spots and that's all.

🪡🪡🪡 That's a really cool outfit for Ladybug! I really like the fusion idea. Though, as someone who really likes drawing up fun fashionable outfits, I do have one critique (if you don't want it just feel free to ignore the rest of this comment). The cape is great, and it makes sense to have the gradient on the inner side match up with the suit, but because of that the suit kinda Blends in with the cape and the suit becomes somewhat lost in the silhouette of the cape. It's like a gecko blending in with the colors of its surroundings. It makes the suit harder to see. As for how you could possibly keep that from happening...Well, that's tricky to do with so few colors to work with, but my 1st thought is to simply swap the black and red and have them go from black into red, instead of red into black as you have it. I think that would look more exciting too, in my opinion. With that said, I'm still learning, and my critique (and/or solution to the critique) could be totally wrong, so take that as you will. I really enjoyed the video!
Honestly I think her outfit should’ve been more like Blue Beetles with an insect like mask that completely covers her face, also it was A HUUUUGE missed opportunity to give her a wing pack that resembles the elytra of actual ladybugs

If this was 2D animation and not 3D, it’d be perfect for animators to go full throttle and not have to worry about texture consistency. I’m talking gurren lagann levels of fight choreography.
On the point about the other Miraculous users throughout the series, every one of her classmates that received a Miraculous, aside from Adrian, received one after Ladybug and Noir had been active for a time. Perhaps because of that and looking up to them, they had moments envisioning themselves in the role of a heroic companion to the two.
That's a fair point! But there's no way they would have predicted which animal they would get, so they shouldn't have been able to think of a cool design that quickly. At least I don't think so.
I LOVE what you did with the new outfit, it's simply divine! Though for the canon, unrecognisable look, I personally would have made her eyes pink, as it is the colour that appears when marinette transforms. But really, it's just a minor nitpick of mine. The design is honestly top-notch ❤❤

I liked her outfit for the first season cause it was nice and unique for me, but after that, for the other seasons when we're introduced to the other miraculous users and how decorative they were, Ladybug's outfit definitely feels bland now

It looks pretty nice as a concept and giving the ladybug features is definitely a plus im surprised they never started out in this way considering every other miraculous holder has features from their respective miraculous heck even Cat Noir has the cat ears going for him and belt being used as a tail was genious tbh they could of made her basic suit have a sort of psuedo wings that split off her suit and allows her to fly a short distance and could be very useful for vertical height and she can still rely on her Yo-yo for horizontal travel like she already does and given her some antennas would of been perfect at least in the more basic this would of been fine for the quality they could of came up with themselves in any case and i agree the upgrade should of been the base form
I like to think of it as a secret identity thing. Bruce Wayne crafted his cheeky playboy persona so nobody would every associate him with the Dark Knight. A mild mannered journalist is just about as far as you can get from Superman. An aspiring fashion designer is not someone anyone would ever associate with a hero who dresses like Ladybug. I know nobody on the creative team ever had this thought but I find it funny so it's part of my head canon.
6:34 its cool you mentioned this because i have a head canon with this for show by rock (Basically us the audience sees the human forms but in universe everyone sees the myumon forms)
This is just me spittballing what my opinion of the oc looks like to me but the character kind of looks like a mix of luz and the collector from the owl house. First thing I noticed were the similarities in outfit designs with collector wearing a robe pj mixture and luz wearing a cat jacket. The second thing I noticed was that star on the characters hair which I thought matched the collectors atsetic and powers (after all he is a child of the stars). Not to mention the characters hair, eye color, and skin color are all similar to luz. These are all the stuff I observed in the character design and I love the owl house for the record so this is calling all of this out on a positive note.
I simply like the version from the anime PV, lol. It's simple, yes, but because the spots are only on the body and not the legs, and also the mask has a different shade of red, and she has two long floaty hairbands that work perfectly for the stylized artstyle. It's just the perfect appear to me.

No because this looks so freaking good!! I never really liked her outfit at all... Because to similar reasons; bland and very easy to identify her. They couldn't come up with anything in the graphic design station?? She could have a skirt that represent ladybug wings or something? She could have had like wings?? Like they did so much for cat noir's outfit (even though it looks like he went to the club 😅 which is kind of concerning).
🪡 The cape resembling the elytra and the antennae do help drive home the ladybug motif more than just spots on skintight spandex. I mean, if you're going with a motif, why not go all the way and get creative with it, right?

This has been a HUGE issue for me. It doesn't look good for a mc, when the side characters have a more interesting outfit

You're right! It was a mistake to introduce the ability to change your look whenever ESPECIALLY if the main character won't take advantage of it 😒

WHY NOT MAKE LADYBUG CHANGE THE PATTERNS OF HER OUTFIT ?! this would be such a simple change who would make more doll possibilities, more marketing ideas, and still a thing that makes sense, ladybug possibly wants a outfit who would be comfortable for fighiting so i dont mind the spandex, but my god, there are orange ladybugs, there is also possible patterns who focus more in the black or others who would even include white so i think that the biggest miss oportunity is be creative with the thing that is easy to change, the pattern, EVEN ALYA DID THIS for rena furtive.... i really dislike the idea that both gabriel and marinette are fashion designers and they can't think of creative like... in the words of miranda presley "Red and Black dots for ladybug ? how original".

I really like your redesign! So much better than the original.
I do know that in the Ladybug PV, there were alternate ladybug designs for PV Marinette because the animators didn't want to animate so many spots, but Thomas Astruc was so set on the whole red and black spots so the animators only did the black spots to the waist up. They even gave PV Marinette a golden chain for her yoyo, which it's a nice touch and callback for Sailor Venus.

I do prefer PV's design. Still not SUPER exciting, but it's more fun to look at. I love the ribbons especially and how the spots aren't EVERYWHERE.

I don't mind Marinette's Ladybug costume being too simple and bland. However, my biggest issues with her base costume is that she's still too recognizable! Like come on even in her Ladybug outfit she still looks like Marinette. 😤🤦♂️

Catnoir 's desgin can be considered "bland" or simple but it fits and is pleasing to look at unlike ladybug 's

Personally I prefer shadybug's outfit before reformation over ladybugs at least it's different and the red streak in black twin hair buns like sailor moons hair buns to me is more interesting but that's my opinion also it fits the ladybug esthetic even if shadybug is a tad aggressive gothic but to me it's a nicer design 😊
I think another problem with the Ladybug suit is that there is no real point of focus. A lot of the videos i've seen discussing character design say it's important to design the character in a way that directs the audience to the character's face or chest. Because Ladybug's costume is just one pattern we can't really focus on anything. Other costumes that favor simplicity achieve this. For example, Ben Reilly's Scarlet Spider costume was designed to be functional with a light blue hoodie over a red fullbody suit and our eyes lock on to the hoodie.
I was never a fan of simplistic designs (though I admit they work well for some heroes who have short-range powers or no powers at all), so seeing a more stylized approach is appreciated. I hope you do Chat Noir next! The black cat look is overdone.
I absolutely love this redesign! I really think you did her jusitce. But my only problem with it is the overly long exaggerated antennas. This could be a huge issue during fight scenes because the villains could just pull her antenna as an advantage.

I do like your redesign. The idea of a cape in the shape of ladybugs wings is very cool. But there is one thing I can't get behind. The bottom of the suit is a solid black which makes it look unbalanced when compared with the more visually dynamic top. Matching shorts or a matching belt with boots, in a ladybug print, would elevate the look.

I may add, it's a detail that's also present on Alou's characters, her face area has some nice shading (blush on cheeks, lighting on hair) going on (even the ears technically have some as well), but the dress is all flat colours. I don't mind if you don't want it looking very 3D, I've gotten tired of it sometimes too, but some good cartoon styling never gets old.

Designing outfits can be a challenge. I've learnt a lot through trying to design a outfit and look for my vtuber model. Not only that, but I've watched a lot of videos discussing the topic. And that's just for vtubers. Magical girls is its own genre of design. So props to you for trying your hand at it!

This design is so cute! I love how the red of her suit looks like a little jacket, and the cape immediately makes her look so buggy (making it shorter in the final version was a great idea, keeps her looking sporty)
However, there’s two issues I can see, only in the coloring. The inside of the cape is the same color as her arms and torso, which makes them blend together and will hurt readability. Also, having her suit’s main color be black means that both main characters wear entirely or mainly black skintight bodysuits… It wouldn’t be an issue if she was a side character or they weren’t superheroes, but as characters that will share action scenes, they need distinct colors. Recognizability is key with superheroes.
If I were to recolor her, I’d move the black to the inside of the cape. Ladybug wings are black with a really cool texture so incorporating that texture could be a neat idea! Then, I’d either extend her red past her cape to look like a romper (cape might be too long for that, though) or change the black to something else (maybe a dull teal?) or but I’d definitely keep her feet as black (as boots or a gradient like her hands, since the white spots are really buggy and I’d want to keep them)
But that’s just my design habits. I’m totally biased because I also have a ladybug based secret identity character design but she’s a fantasy alien drag queen so maybe a bit different…

I always hate ladybugs basic design so when she fused miraculous it was always my favorite because it added more detail
Now it got me thinking about designs and ideas. The ladybug costume is super basic, but I never really cared enough to refute. That said, I agree that the update with the charms should have been standard. It's very Spiderman and thus in theme. But maybe, for a temporary upgrade, it could lean in more on the magical girl side. I'm thinking black body suit (to keep theme), red boots, red gauntlets/gloves, and maybe a sleeveless coat with the ladybug pattern? Maybe keep the cape as a defensive option like how Batman's cape can stop bullets. I'm just spitballing here, honestly.
Maybe Ladybug costume is like commercial thing? They don't wanna update they ugly merch permanently

Tbh for a ladybug superhero you would kinda have to add a cape-since w/o it , itd just look like a person with a dotted suit , the cape really does help give off the ladybug vibe

I love the design overall!
I love the white spots on her gloves and legs that is taken from irl ladybugs that have those tiny white spots, but in her case can also make it seem like a glimmering sparkle in a way. she is after all a fashion designer
I love her un capped suit with how simple and effective it looks and the way you add some white to her neck area, bringing in some balance.
I guess my critisms would first be the Antenna? its too distracting because its so long and Jester-like, but also the way its so long and bent like that makes it look like a cockroach's than a ladybugs
and also about her cape wing, yes its shaped like a ladybug but its so big and bulky that it also feels distracting becaue her main suit is already red with black dots, and her cape being red makes it hard to see her main. Nothing wrong with big capes but a big cape needs to visually not distract the eyes from the main suit, like how superman's suit is. his main outfit is Blue so it stood out amongst his red cape. Or how mysterio has a green suit and a red cape. I think a cape needs to highlight the suit instead of blending in?
also I think the long antenna and bulky big cape combined kinda makes a distracting silouette? I suggest either have a long Antenna and a shorter cape or a Big cape but smaller antenna for balance.
Hairstyle wise yes its like a ladybug but ... I feel like she looks more mature than a 13-14 year on in this one? but at the same time im not sure what hairstyle to suggest, perhaps something with braids to give her a youthful look but still different silouette than her civillian form?
I really hope I didnt come across as snobby or anything! or if my words are too blunt (English is not my first language, so I translate Indonesian directly to english in my brain) and I hope maybe this input helps in the future, and I wish you luck with your AU!

I totally agree with you 😭 I got so upset when I realised her power up suit only came on with the lucky charm
I know for my designs of Ladybug, it varies from au to au, but I’ll use my rewrites version, the Tales from the Grimoire version of Ladybug as an example of what I’d change. First, I’d ditch the pigtails all together and give her a loose ponytail, with the ribbon tying it up acting as antennae. I’d also make her eyes gold, darker hair, and a mask more reminiscent of ladybug wings. I like the design Astruc had made with black arms and boots, so I kept that. I also gave Ladybug more of a utility belt look to her yoyo, with gold compartments like on her pv design which in my opinion could house light energy she uses for different types of attacks other than the lucky charm. Precanon has this cool metal and magic thing with Maribug and Felichat respectively, and I absolutely love it!

I made a costume for my AU too, the hair and ribbons are longer like the PV version, the costume is a bit similar to one of the concepts for this version, and the collar has a curved v-cut to look like the collar of chinese clothes, along with a button with a ladybug print like the one she has in the updated costume.

Since I'm working on my own Miraculous AU (basically a rewrite but whatever), I also changed the heroes designs a lot. That includes Ladybug. I feel like one thing I really wish was included in Ladybug's design is that it had some Chinese aspects to it. Maybe have her hair really long with a bun ponytail of sorts with hair bodkins and if you want a flower (maybe like a sakura flower or a lotus flower). Kind of want to add in like sort of wings to it that are kind of like a cape or something. Plus her outfit would look somewhat like a traditional Chinese outfit. Plus I kind of wanna add in yellow golds or something. I doubt I'll go overboard with the spots. Also btw only now I mention in it but I want to give her either dark blue hair or like a light blue hair. Can't decide yet. That's probably just my idea for her design.

Looking at the updated design I don't know how I feel about it. It does look really good though. Its mainly the red cape on red torso for me. Maybe I'd like it more without the cape.
I'm not super against her outfit though. Her and chat noir have simple costumes. together I think they look fine. I like Her upgraded look, but I hate that it's not permanent, and also that cat noir doesn't have an update to match. I also think Mr bug handled that well.
Any amount of black to break up the design would be fine, which your design does do.
Yes, finally! I thought I was alone on this! The problem with Ladybugs design is that there is WAAAY too much red in her costume. I was taught that the color red is meant to be used sparingly or must compliment the other colors so it doesn't clash. There are two characters that come to mind that pull both of these designs off well. Kiyotaka Ishimaru (Danganronpa) who uses the color red sparingly, and Diamant (FE Engage) who uses the color red, but that shade of red is toned down and compliments the rest of the design extremely well.
Ladybug does...neither. The shade of red is too bright. There is way too much of it. The black spots are somehow just as bright as the shade of red which makes it worse, and there are no other design pieces (like braclets, gems, scarfs, or even a skirt) to make the design not as much as an eye sore to look at.
Whats strange to me is I read somewhere that ML was inspired by sailor moon. If the creators used a design similar to something from that show with hints of red here or there. I can almost guarantee it would have done wonders for her design. Thats just my take on the matter anyway.

My personal opinion about the orignial ladybug suit: it doesn't look bad, its just not enough for a main character.
Like if the ladybug miraculous was only for a side character, I would see no problem, using that suit.
But not for a main character.
I love the design choices- leaning more into the magical girl stuff, instead of just Marinette in a costume.
I've made two Ladybug redesigns in my time, one for a special little project and one that I was gonna use for an animatic but I haven't gotten around to making yet lol. The animatic one is actually slipping my mind 😭 but I do remember the special little project one. I took a similar approach with the all black base and red, spotted bolero(?). She has the same collar as the show's lucky charm costume but it's trimmed in gold instead of black (because LadyBee looks chef's kiss). She has thigh high boot cover things with small spots on her knees and ballet flats and her chest and thighs are wrapped in gold ribbon. Her hair's darker and in a bun and she also has large, antenna-like ribbons. Instead of making her face more bug like, we made her mask look more like a ladybug's face. But this design focuses less on hiding who she is cause that's not what we need for this project but still leagues better than red with black spots and that's all.

🪡🪡🪡 That's a really cool outfit for Ladybug! I really like the fusion idea. Though, as someone who really likes drawing up fun fashionable outfits, I do have one critique (if you don't want it just feel free to ignore the rest of this comment).
The cape is great, and it makes sense to have the gradient on the inner side match up with the suit, but because of that the suit kinda Blends in with the cape and the suit becomes somewhat lost in the silhouette of the cape. It's like a gecko blending in with the colors of its surroundings. It makes the suit harder to see.
As for how you could possibly keep that from happening...Well, that's tricky to do with so few colors to work with, but my 1st thought is to simply swap the black and red and have them go from black into red, instead of red into black as you have it. I think that would look more exciting too, in my opinion.
With that said, I'm still learning, and my critique (and/or solution to the critique) could be totally wrong, so take that as you will. I really enjoyed the video!

Honestly I think her outfit should’ve been more like Blue Beetles with an insect like mask that completely covers her face, also it was A HUUUUGE missed opportunity to give her a wing pack that resembles the elytra of actual ladybugs
It looks much better than the original, but because of those cloak-wings it reminds me more of a cockroach than a ladybug.

On the point about the other Miraculous users throughout the series, every one of her classmates that received a Miraculous, aside from Adrian, received one after Ladybug and Noir had been active for a time. Perhaps because of that and looking up to them, they had moments envisioning themselves in the role of a heroic companion to the two.
That's a fair point! But there's no way they would have predicted which animal they would get, so they shouldn't have been able to think of a cool design that quickly. At least I don't think so.

Though for the canon, unrecognisable look, I personally would have made her eyes pink, as it is the colour that appears when marinette transforms.

It looks pretty nice as a concept and giving the ladybug features is definitely a plus im surprised they never started out in this way considering every other miraculous holder has features from their respective miraculous heck even Cat Noir has the cat ears going for him and belt being used as a tail was genious tbh they could of made her basic suit have a sort of psuedo wings that split off her suit and allows her to fly a short distance and could be very useful for vertical height and she can still rely on her Yo-yo for horizontal travel like she already does and given her some antennas would of been perfect at least in the more basic this would of been fine for the quality they could of came up with themselves in any case and i agree the upgrade should of been the base form

(Basically us the audience sees the human forms but in universe everyone sees the myumon forms)
This is just me spittballing what my opinion of the oc looks like to me but the character kind of looks like a mix of luz and the collector from the owl house. First thing I noticed were the similarities in outfit designs with collector wearing a robe pj mixture and luz wearing a cat jacket. The second thing I noticed was that star on the characters hair which I thought matched the collectors atsetic and powers (after all he is a child of the stars). Not to mention the characters hair, eye color, and skin color are all similar to luz. These are all the stuff I observed in the character design and I love the owl house for the record so this is calling all of this out on a positive note.

I simply like the version from the anime PV, lol. It's simple, yes, but because the spots are only on the body and not the legs, and also the mask has a different shade of red, and she has two long floaty hairbands that work perfectly for the stylized artstyle. It's just the perfect appear to me.
