For those who think showcase works only with a dog who already mastered obedience ... I have tried Robert's method of recall with a totally untrained 13 weeks old GSD puppy on a 16ft long lead, and the method works! The idea is to excite the dog to come to you, because he get treats, play and has a great time. Even after a few days of this training, the puppy follows me more easily and comes closer all by itself. The key is finding a balance; how many recalls you demand from a puppy during a 15 min session? Not too many; don't exhaust the puppy.
I got my Malinois from a shelter... he is a Malinois mutt mix... he is not AKC royalty. I started using this technique and the dog responded... listen to what Robert is preaching and practice it! You do not have to have royalty K9 to achieve results! What you need to do is reward the dog at the right time with play time. Do not allow one or two temporary distractions to deter your progress! Be consistent in the messaging to your dog. When he comes to you, the game begins! When he comes to you, no further obedience ensues... reward him with praise and game and tug! It works! Thank you Robert!
Thats exactly what my problem is. My dog listens perfectly to me without a distraction, but as soon as there is another dog he goes loose. He doesnt pay attention to me. Your video is on point, thank you for that! :)
Oh, thanx, I'm going to have to try it with my boy. I've been using treats, not good enough. I'm the one that got the failed protection dog, M, 1.5yo, and asked you if he would be ok with a family...well, I'm his family. He needs to learn everything. I'm trying very hard and so is he. Distractions are a biggie, he's never seen anything before....but, he does like tug....thanx so much. He's good at sit now and getting better at "out". We are both learning each other. He will be a great dog one day :-) I do watch as many of your videos as I can, they are a great help.

Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge about dogs and teaching us how dogs think. I think I can finally help my dog understand me as I understand how he thinks!
Thank you I've been working with ny dog over 2 months. I was ready to get rid of him and start over with a new dog. He knew his commands because he would do them like sit, down, and heal when he felt like it. He never would look at me when I said his name or come when I called him. I went and got him a toy and tried this today and it was like a completely different dog. He jusf wanted to play not work, work, work.
Mr. Cabral, I fostered a German Shorthair pup that is now 9 months old. She comes from strong field trail lines (VERY independent) and I did a great disservice to her by not working with her from the moment we took her in. I really wish I seen this video a month ago, I’m at the point where he doesn’t want to return cuz he thinks I’m gonna give him more commands. He just started doing that so hopefully I can correct it with this method! Thank you 🙏🏼
Gonna try it. I have a cocker spaniel that gets completely distracted outdoors, and I'd love to at least let him go for a run with his pals at the park. But the way he is now, I can't really slip him off leash.
I have a rescue English Pointer. In 18 months he had not been off leash as he had no recall. I am lucky in that I can walk with dogs off leash over hundreds of acres. He was not toy or food orientated and if he did come to me he would make catching him a game so, I got into the car and drove off for a good mile (Private road). He had to run after me. He tried the no catch me once more and I did the same. His recall is now 100%. He can be a good distance away working the scrub land and if I call he is with me in seconds.
Do you have a list of commands that you use? ie: Here, Foos, etc. I want to start using the words consistently so my dog doesn't get confused. Example: Come vs Come Here Thanks
I have a 6 month old very... headstrong Australian Shepherd haha. Recall and teaching her to stay have been the most difficult but you make it look so easy! 😅 Definitely going to try this on her long lead later!
Love the video and the explanation. Have a German Shepard 9 months and is very quick with his commands like you talked about because of his pray drive. Also have a 6 year old collie mix. Very obedient but have had trouble getting the speed in the command or over come distractions. She does not like the tug or really like to fetch. Any advice on motivating her.

Hello I have a question. When teaching your dog something new, do you include their name in the command? Eg "Roxy come/sit/etc" or do you just say "come/sit/etc" without their name in front? Does it matter? Thank you!
we say the dog's name to get their attention.. some use it first, some don't. doesn't really matter unless your dog isn't paying attention... then its a little helpful!
Personally, when I'm training I like to use their name most often when I'm doing a recall, and much less often when giving other commands. Specifically for the reason Robert mentioned. This, in my opinion, helps for potential dangerous situations when a recall is absolutely necessary because the dog slightly associates its name with the recall command. (Not too much though)
Hi Robert , have a German Shepherd / Dutch mix male . Fantastic pup 9 months old comes when I call him 60% of the time . I have 3 acres of field on farm . Need him to respond 100% , what to do ? Thx
Hi I think my question would be irrelevant here...but my 6months old german shehpered puppy has started to poo in the houses however he had the proper routine to do a potty outside
In obedience trials here in Australia the dog is expected to sit in front of the handler without verbal commands or hand signals. Should I only practice this exercise with the dog on a sit to begin with or is there another method to train periodic sits to maintain his drive. Thankyou.
Our 9 month old Labrador retriever puppy eats Merrick Backcountry Raw Infused Big Game Recipe with Lamb, Wild Boar & Venison Grain-Free Dry Dog Food. There are many great high quality products on the market. Best of luck.
Hi Robert, I'm over in Australia. we have Jack Russell/Border Collie 11 months, and i'm trying to teach your recall, the problem is that when I move backwards with her toy she trots a few steps then launches at it, is there a way to discourage her jumping towards her toy.
Do you have any videos for bringing dog energy up? My dog is a bit unpredictable and and I would like to get more ideas so I can explore different tricks. Interestingly, my dog does not always follow me when I run away. Even though he’s a medium or medium-high energy dog. Whenever I get him going it feels like a found a four leaf clover.
Hello so I’m training my new pup but a bit confused so I’m training him to sit and do the touch recall ect. So I understand not to call him to me at distance while he’s in a sit. So When I train him to come do I just let him run around so his own thing call him then reward him-let him walk off then repeat? Also do I teach everything in seperate training sessions? For example Morning - sit-lie down-stay Afternoon training session-come Am I overloading his brain if I teach him sit-lie down-stay in one session or is this correct
So when do you cap a drive if your not supposed to give a command on recall? I'm confused. I never give a command when he comes to me, as his recall is getting much better. Do you do it when playing tug?
the way i taught my dog was to come was i had food in my hand so thy fowled me anywhere so i add a command and sit they learned it in less then a day and will come from anywhere unless distracted and they are to far away so i need to revise my traing
Hi Robert, I have a female mixed shepherd of 9 months. She is perfect for the recall in my garden, but when we are at the beach for a walk (I live in Brittany in France) she runs far away when she sees another dog, they play together and I does not exist anymore (neither a great treat or a fantastic toy). She comes back but after minimum 5 minutes. I never follow her. What do you think about a walk with a 10 meters leach, just to learn her to be close to me ? Of course I work every day the recall at home as a game and I practise the tug as I have seen in your video. Thank you for your help.
My dog is a 5 month old husky. Potty trained. He goes into the crate on his own and will hangout in there willingly with the door open. He comes to work with me everyday. He will be in his crate when I go to the store for a short period and he will always go potty in the crate when I am gone. I let him out before and after. How to I get him to stop using the crate as a bathroom when I am gone??? Thank you
Any tips on getting my dog away from playing keep away? She’s a little over a year old and absolutely doesn’t want to drop the frisbee or toy. She loves running and catching the frisbee but I can’t figure out how to get her to not want to get chased. If that makes sense. Thank you for your time.
Robert Cabral you said in here or another one of the videos that pulling them back to you doesn’t help the situation. Do you recommend just light redirection with the leash along with the command? Also thank you for replying.
We just got a 4 months old BM, he has low food drive and medium play drive. Is there a good book for the breed? Robert, your teaching method is the best I've seen so far. Do you have a full system for teaching high drive dogs? We also got a two years old Lab that I'm strugelling with recall - work in progress... Thanks

Hmm. This might prove interesting sitting in a wheelchair. The whole going backwards isn't as simple/easy as it seems. Been working w/ my Bull Terrier for awhile now and its still hit and miss w/ him coming to me. Could you do a video on training aggression out of a dog? Love my dog, but he goes off on other un-neutered male dogs. Thanks and good info. I've watched a few of your videos and have seen success w/ them.
My dog is not into toys. I got hm at age 3 so who knows what kind of life he had before. He gets along reasonably well with other dogs now that I brought him to dog parks at least 3 times a week. I have had him for 6 months and he finally trusts me and tries to please. But recall is not consistent. It's way better but 30% of the time he ignores me. I started giving him a treat on arrival to the park so when I call he expects another treat, which I sometimes give him and sometimes not. His coming is quicker but the number of times he ignores me is the same. Any ideas? Remember he is not a very playful dog yet. That is getting better but not there yet.
Hi Robert ,This is Mahmoud from Jordan , I have a 5 months German shepherd , It seems obsessive , when playing he did not get back to me with the Toy or the Ball ?
Robert, I had a stroke and it affected my right side. So I can't run like in your videos. I just got a mini poodle in January and still having problems with recall. She's fine when not distracted and inside. I know you're supposed to start inside and then go outside. Fetch is no problem, she comes. But when distracted she won't. What do I do? Amy
I don't know if this question has been asked before, however, do you also let him play with his favorite toy in the house or is it exclusively only for his training?
When I run away from my dog, he comes to me he starts jumping and mouthing me lol I still can't get him to stop biting me (his lips curl) I'm not sure what to do.
Wonderful dog. However, I'd love to see this video WITHOUT a perfectly trained dog. It's a bit daunting/discouraging to see this when your own dog does not have a Mal's drive (and how many homeowners have a Malinois?). Many dogs I work with lack even food drive. My own dog doesn't really care for toys. Please do more videos with dogs you have never worked before--I've seen some of them and they are wonderfully helpful because the viewer gets to see the mistakes that can pop up while working an unfamiliar dog or perhaps a puppy.
I agree with you both. I took on a client that has a pair of Tervurens. Both from different places and different abusive situations. The male with absolutely no training and severely neglected was the easier to get engaged with. But he was happy just to have ANYONE that wanted to pay attention to him (heartbreaking honestly) The female was slightly older (both younger than 2) but very shy, had a basic idea of sit&stay. Or "get back" is what she was told. But tossed around from foster to foster. She was more tentative. But loved to be engaged with me. Both of them, during this exercise would take 7 or 8 steps toward me and then take a detour. At first I was stumped. These dogs were essentially long haired Malinois Then I watched closely and Robert said it. It was brief but he said "you start with the long line". So I went back to the basics and worked up from there. First just the long line, then the line while I went back, then I added a toy, still on the line and over time, I eliminated the line and so on. Neither had much drive, and were still timid, so tug was mild and didn't seem rewarding. So I came up with other games they liked more. I wasn't trying to build drive, just confidence. They were starved for attention. In some games, just being given some love was all the reward they could ever ask for. They got a lot of it. However, seeing the setbacks I had, might have saved me time. But I think I learned a deeper l lessen this way and was able to build an incredible bond with two dogs that badly wanted a bond with anyone that was willing to give them the time. It would be nice to have more info. I plan to purchase some of his training videos. He's certainly earned it and worth every penny, IMHO
In the beginning of the video you said, "do not give the dog another command when they come to you". In the middle of the video you gave the dog commands when he came to you. When is it ok to give obedience commands while working on recall and playing with the dog.
There was one instance where he gave the dog a command aftee "here" and it was as an example of how to cap the dog's drives. At that point he also said "I wouldn't normally do this".
I am a little confused it seems like our marker word is "Yes" but your release cue is also "Yes"?? I like your video thanks for making them. Can you explain the release word to me?
Mary Blanton I was confused before too because I was using Yes as the marker and Break for the release until I came across his method. Watch his video on the binary dog. I am going to work on not using the stay anymore and reteach the sit/down to include the automatic stay until I say Yes followed by treat/play. Good luck and happy training.
Hmm I am working on this but not sure how long or when it's going to become natural to my dog to respond. If I let my dog out in the garden in the evening for a wee he refused to come in so I open the fridge door and I look down and my dog is there LOL I laugh but I cannot carry a fridge around with me for a perfect recall, sorry Richard I try ever so hard to get used to training my adopted German shepherd and the simplest of thing's like opening a door is crazy because all good things come from the fridge and not me. On a funny side of getting a reaction from our dog's and the moral of this story is don't feed your dog's when you are munching out of the fridge.
I have used a 50 foot long line going to 100 foot long line she’s perfect if there is any type of distraction whether we be at the horse Park other dogs the collar might as will not even be on her neck any advice would be so helpful... I have done everything that you’re showing on your video replay everything is great but it’s at one thing that distracts her it just seems to blow her mind and she knows I’m the best thing to come to and her partner on the game is fun it’s me
teaching and PRACTICING 'here' (the word I use) inside a fenced tennis court is nearly ideal: clean, fenced, large, benches, people are kept out. PRACTICE 'here' with the dog every time he brings a thrown object back. A dog that naturally likes to retrieve (Lab, Golden, some APBTs, etc.) already wants to repeat the game of chase, grab, return. So every time the dog takes the object and is about to turn toward you.... say the WORD... 'HERE' and be prepared to offer a tiny snack and/or physical encouragement. It's not a competition... it is a cooperation to help the dog and you ... see?
I've never seen someone look so much like a German Shepherd in human form

So how can you do this with throwing their toy to play catch but stopping them mid run to come back to you without the toy?
Hi Robert, I'm over in Australia.
we have Jack Russell/Border Collie 11 months, and i'm trying to teach your recall, the problem is that when I move backwards with her toy she trots a few steps then launches at it, is there a way to discourage her jumping towards her toy.
consider using a lower value item.
thanks Rob, will give it ago.
My dog is 3year old can I teach him trics or command.
3 ... 3 years old?
Hello so I’m training my new pup but a bit confused so I’m training him to sit and do the touch recall ect. So I understand not to call him to me at distance while he’s in a sit.
So When I train him to come do I just let him run around so his own thing call him then reward him-let him walk off then repeat?
Also do I teach everything in seperate training sessions?
For example
Morning - sit-lie down-stay
Afternoon training session-come
Am I overloading his brain if I teach him sit-lie down-stay in one session or is this correct
Thank you
Try making it smaller. Use the divider.
Any tips on getting my dog away from playing keep away? She’s a little over a year old and absolutely doesn’t want to drop the frisbee or toy. She loves running and catching the frisbee but I can’t figure out how to get her to not want to get chased. If that makes sense. Thank you for your time.
yup... long line!
Robert Cabral you said in here or another one of the videos that pulling them back to you doesn’t help the situation. Do you recommend just light redirection with the leash along with the command?
Also thank you for replying.
@@DrShekels yes, teach them that bringing it back keeps the game going!
Robert Cabral thanks again. You get a sub because of this. Nice to see interaction from youtubers that inform.
Thanks
Will be lunching a members section very soon.
@@RobertCabralDogs I'm looking forward for the membership. Here is the team: drive.google.com/file/d/1sgyzkjdH90iVxmbv7BBThKSeZSEzSkHh/view?usp=drivesdk
My dog won’t play with toy’s anymore, do you think it’s because of a dental problem?
How do you teach your dog to stay in an Unfenced yard? My dog runs away
Hi Robert ,This is Mahmoud from Jordan , I have a 5 months German shepherd , It seems obsessive , when playing he did not get back to me with the Toy or the Ball ?
I address this in all my videos relating to the subject. You will need to watch those videos. USE A LONG LINE!

Thanks a lot for your prompt reply , sure I'm going to do it
Robert, I had a stroke and it affected my right side.
Only for training
But he was happy just to have ANYONE that wanted to pay attention to him (heartbreaking honestly)
The female was slightly older (both younger than 2) but very shy, had a basic idea of sit&stay. Or "get back" is what she was told. But tossed around from foster to foster. She was more tentative. But loved to be engaged with me. Both of them, during this exercise would take 7 or 8 steps toward me and then take a detour. At first I was stumped. These dogs were essentially long haired Malinois
Then I watched closely and Robert said it.
Sir, How can i make my dog follow my command without food treat?
In the beginning of the video you said, "do not give the dog another command when they come to you". In the middle of the video you gave the dog commands when he came to you. When is it ok to give obedience commands while working on recall and playing with the dog.
There was one instance where he gave the dog a command aftee "here" and it was as an example of how to cap the dog's drives. At that point he also said "I wouldn't normally do this".
What if you don't have a toy? then how is the recall going to work.
When I run for Play he try to bite on my hand .. what I need to do in this situation ??!!
I am a little confused it seems like our marker word is "Yes" but your release cue is also "Yes"?? I like your video thanks for making them. Can you explain the release word to me?
I use Yes as a release. I use a bridge word "good" to continue the behavior...
Yes is a release word and a marker that the dog performed a correct behavior. Yes is followed by the reward which means the dog is released.
Please put a link to where you can buy the tug you are using.

Hmm I am working on this but not sure how long or when it's going to become natural to my dog to respond.
If I let my dog out in the garden in the evening for a wee he refused to come in so I open the fridge door and
I look down and my dog is there LOL
I laugh but I cannot carry a fridge around with me for a perfect recall, sorry Richard I try ever so hard to get used to training my adopted German shepherd and the simplest of thing's like opening a door is crazy because all good things come from the fridge and not me.
On a funny side of getting a reaction from our dog's and the moral of this story is don't feed your dog's when you are munching out of the fridge.
very nice video
I have used a 50 foot long line going to 100 foot long line she’s perfect if there is any type of distraction whether we be at the horse Park other dogs the collar might as will not even be on her neck any advice would be so helpful... I have done everything that you’re showing on your video replay everything is great but it’s at one thing that distracts her it just seems to blow her mind and she knows I’m the best thing to come to and her partner on the game is fun it’s me
What toy is that
teaching and PRACTICING 'here' (the word I use) inside a fenced tennis court is nearly ideal: clean, fenced, large, benches, people are kept out. It's not a competition... it is a cooperation to help the dog and you ... see?
