  • Teaching your dog to walk backwards is a very fun and impressive skill. People LOVE to see a dog walk backwards. In this video I give you all the basics to teaching your dog this skill. I demonstrate it first with my dog Goofy and then show the steps to get your dog to learn it with our puppy Duane - aka the Duane-O-Mator.
    As much as it is a fun thing to watch, there are countless benefits to a dog that knows how to walk backwards. Its best if you can start with a puppy, but you can teach it at most any age.

    i like you showed how it supposed to look like with a trained dog and how an untrained dog will (could?) react to being taught that for the first time

    Hi, I just have a random question. If I wanna yeah my dog to stay, should I use a word like stay for him to know to stay. Or should I not use the word and just let him know that sit also means stay?
    Your videos are great and I’m loving them. Keep it up.

    • @marshmallowcat7035
      @marshmallowcat7035 5 лет назад

      In a way sit also means stay so you say the dog to sit and he has to sit until released out of the position. Also a big WARNING! Never call your dog from sit back to you, then it could associate sit, with coming and not hold the position, it is best to release a sit by coming back yourself to the dog or any other vocal command for release that dog associates with being free to do anything wants AFTER the job is done. Hope I wasn't annoying XD

      Cliff Cheung it’s „Steh“, German for „stand“. A lot of people teach their dogs German commands. Police often does it so others can’t just command their dogs cause they don’t know the right words. Kinda smart.

    Robert : I taught him to go back by doing this indoor.. Please let me know what you think..
    To begin with : I arranged wooden box by the wall with enough gap between the wall and the box for the dog to pass through one way.. (One can use chairs or any prop at home to make a narrow space by the wall )
    Step 1 : I stand at the other end, I lure him to come through it and treat him. Once he is in I repeat this process till he is comfortable to walk through the narrow space.
    Step 2: Once he is in the spot where I want him, I walk forward towards him in that narrow space which makes him to go no where but backwards.. Continued the process and then added the cue "BACK" He learnt it and does it now in open space too..
    Please note : Make sure there is enough space for him to walk back with no hurdles but shouldn't have so much space for him to turn around.. I found this easy compared to doing it in open space as doing it in open space i'll have to worry about dog turning side ways..
    Hope this alternate method helps those who cant get it right in open space.... Thanks

    You and your dogs are amazing. I love it when you explained it from the dog's perspective. I have tried many of your techniques and they worked like wonders. I especially love the come command exercises and how you made it so fun. I have tried that with my 3+ months old lab and he loved it. I am now trying the more advanced command, the back command, but got a little stuck. He always sit instead of walking backwards when I walk towards him. Could you help give me additional tips of how else I could get him to walk backwards?

    • @ABCdogtraining802
      @ABCdogtraining802 4 года назад

      My dog did this as well for the first couple days....hold some treats a little lower so the dog cant sit right down.....reward with just 1 step back (do this 4 or 5 times in a row)...THEN...name it!......say back..move slow with fist toward dog with treat in closed hand, if goes back, step back yourself, yes and reward, play like hell!

    Hello, Robert. So I’ve been doing this training for about four days now, and I don’t know if I’m progressing. So I’m a bit confused with the rewarding system, do so let my dog eat the treats off my hand, or do I wait until I see satisfactory results ? I tried both methods, but will minimal progression. I kinda feel like I’m pressuring her to go back, and tips are welcome!

    I shaped that behavior by putting two of my couches away from the wall so that my dog had no turnaround area. Then I would do what you're doing over and over again to shape the behavior! With my service dog this was really critical because there are many times when we are in stores that I need her to back up and go behind something to get out of the way of other people Etc. I found this Behavior to be actually very easy to teach.

    I taught my dog 'back' by pressing forward toward him and named the command when he backed up. Now I stop and say 'back' if he begins to forge ahead during heel.And he does it, then I say 'heel' when he is in position.

    Very interested in how you would teach a dog not to chase a cat. Can you do a video on the subject? This can be any animal that tends to run away like a cat, rabbit, deer etc.

  • @conintava514
    @conintava514 3 дня назад

    My dog was really struggling and kept turning around to check the space before walking back. I read somewhere that it would help if you move a coffee table close to a couch and position your dog in between, that way this forces them to move back without turning around. This was a super helpful tip! Another adviceI have to expedite the learning once your dog gets the hang of it, is saying the command as a last step before they are free to eat. So the first time my dog fumbled a little until she took one step back I freed her. Then the next time around she got the hang of it and then from there, I increased the distance of her backing up.

    This is the same way teach the dog to walk backwards. This is actually fairly easy for most dogs, just be patient. Usually one of the easiest/fun behaviors to teach!!

    • @ABCdogtraining802
      @ABCdogtraining802 4 года назад

      "fairly easy..just be patient"....hahahaah. Yeah hes great at football just be patient...for a year or 5! Just kidding with you. Walking backwards is not natural....but....it is taught and shaped like any other behavior/command. In my experience, training this command is the hardest....not saying too hard but the hardest of the 10 commands I train before releasing a dog back to its handler.

    I don't know what to do or how to add hand signal since I was just walking toward him saying "back". That works. How do I get him to learn and use verbal cue back only? Hope this makes sense.

    Having a lot of trouble with this. As long as he is eating its all good - he backs up. But once I try to take the food away, after 2-3 successful attempts he just lays down in frustration and won't back up - he just totally ignores the treat, too. I'm not sure why I can't progress. I keep going back to stage one. Seems like I am teaching him that he only needs to back up when he is being fed.
