- Teaching your dog to walk backwards is a very fun and impressive skill. People LOVE to see a dog walk backwards. In this video I give you all the basics to teaching your dog this skill. I demonstrate it first with my dog Goofy and then show the steps to get your dog to learn it with our puppy Duane - aka the Duane-O-Mator.
As much as it is a fun thing to watch, there are countless benefits to a dog that knows how to walk backwards. Its best if you can start with a puppy, but you can teach it at most any age.

i like you showed how it supposed to look like with a trained dog and how an untrained dog will (could?) react to being taught that for the first time
For my next class, I have to show a trick that I've taught my dog. Curious to see if my pup will pull this off, or rather me!!?
Hi, I just have a random question. If I wanna yeah my dog to stay, should I use a word like stay for him to know to stay. Or should I not use the word and just let him know that sit also means stay?
Your videos are great and I’m loving them. Keep it up.
In a way sit also means stay so you say the dog to sit and he has to sit until released out of the position. Also a big WARNING! Never call your dog from sit back to you, then it could associate sit, with coming and not hold the position, it is best to release a sit by coming back yourself to the dog or any other vocal command for release that dog associates with being free to do anything wants AFTER the job is done. Hope I wasn't annoying XD
Is Dwayne a lab?
Yes. A yellow Lab. Cute, isn't he?
“Have fun with the dog “ key of the video, thank you
Why is your stay command, Shhtay
@@CR604 he is telling him to stand
Cliff Cheung it’s „Steh“, German for „stand“. A lot of people teach their dogs German commands. Police often does it so others can’t just command their dogs cause they don’t know the right words. Kinda smart.
Excellent trainer
This man has helped me save many dogs!
Goofy always looks so happy to work! I love seeing my puppy grin like that. It doesn't happen often, but we're working on it.
My gsd goes like “Karen leave me alone”
I was already seeing him dissappear in the bushes, like Homer Simpson.
Glad to hear your gaining recognition for you amazing videos. Which video is taking the world by storm?
Thank you for this. I was using another method and my pup and I were having a hard time. This video cleared things up and she's on her way to being a moon walker :)
Robert : I taught him to go back by doing this indoor.. Please let me know what you think..
To begin with : I arranged wooden box by the wall with enough gap between the wall and the box for the dog to pass through one way.. (One can use chairs or any prop at home to make a narrow space by the wall )
Step 1 : I stand at the other end, I lure him to come through it and treat him. Once he is in I repeat this process till he is comfortable to walk through the narrow space.
Step 2: Once he is in the spot where I want him, I walk forward towards him in that narrow space which makes him to go no where but backwards.. Continued the process and then added the cue "BACK" He learnt it and does it now in open space too..
Please note : Make sure there is enough space for him to walk back with no hurdles but shouldn't have so much space for him to turn around.. I found this easy compared to doing it in open space as doing it in open space i'll have to worry about dog turning side ways..
Hope this alternate method helps those who cant get it right in open space.... Thanks
I did it the same way. I’ll try his way too to perfect it as she doesn’t understand the hand signal quite yet. I only started teaching het yesterday though ☺️
Extremely happy I found your channel, been subbed a week and already learned so much and have changed my relationship with my dogs
Thank you for taking your dog owning serious!! Be well!!
Thx I taught my dog lulu to do this today it was so fun thx for the tutorial
YOUR AN AWESOME TRAINER
Lol, I love seeing goofy going back it's awesome. Pups doing great also, thank you so much for doing these super videos Robert. Would be lost without ur help with my Mal. Keep em coming please.
my dog refuses to go backwards when i step towards him aaa
edit from a week later: nvm he does it rly well now lol i was just impatient. adding lots of energy and practicing in a narrow hallway worked wonders!
You and your dogs are amazing. I love it when you explained it from the dog's perspective. I have tried many of your techniques and they worked like wonders. I especially love the come command exercises and how you made it so fun. I have tried that with my 3+ months old lab and he loved it. I am now trying the more advanced command, the back command, but got a little stuck. He always sit instead of walking backwards when I walk towards him. Could you help give me additional tips of how else I could get him to walk backwards?
My dog did this as well for the first couple days....hold some treats a little lower so the dog cant sit right down.....reward with just 1 step back (do this 4 or 5 times in a row)...THEN...name it!......say back..move slow with fist toward dog with treat in closed hand, if goes back, step back yourself, yes and reward, play like hell!
Thank you! Love the emphasis on just having fun and enjoying your dog 🐾
Hello, Robert. So I’ve been doing this training for about four days now, and I don’t know if I’m progressing. So I’m a bit confused with the rewarding system, do so let my dog eat the treats off my hand, or do I wait until I see satisfactory results ? I tried both methods, but will minimal progression. I kinda feel like I’m pressuring her to go back, and tips are welcome!
I really enjoy your videos and your techniques on training. What type of treats do you recommend?
No one:
Literally no one:
Not a single soul:
Robert Cabral: I love teaching dogs to walk backwards
Any suggestion for a dog that takes 2 steps back and then sits? ive tried a few different methods including this one and thats the problem im having. Hell let me walk in to him instead of him keep moving back.
My dog keeps sitting and won’t walk backwards
Been teaching this for a wile now but my dog barks in frustration because I am asking him to back away from the treat. Also he will only back up as far as I can throw the treat. I must be doing something wrong maybe you could do another video on how to gain distance. Excellent channel been following you for quite a while now and my dog is doing great. Thanks so much.
Your dog training videos really show how much of a well trained dog goofy is.
And he could do this with ANY dog......
Thank you so much. I have been trying to teach my dog to this without knowing how. I asked the question before I found this video.
A Dog Walking Backwards? It This God?
I shaped that behavior by putting two of my couches away from the wall so that my dog had no turnaround area. Then I would do what you're doing over and over again to shape the behavior! With my service dog this was really critical because there are many times when we are in stores that I need her to back up and go behind something to get out of the way of other people Etc. I found this Behavior to be actually very easy to teach.
Thanks for the tip. Created a hallway with couches so she couldnt turn around like you did and it was the difference maker!
Thank you for always sharing...the balance of fun and learning is on point...we also named our BM after your dog Goofy.
LOve your dog's name and I like how you respect the dog. I want to teach our dog tricks and also to distract his naughty behavior.
Outstanding video on training dog to walk backwards. Thank you!
Robert your an amazing trainer. Thank you for your help
ROBERT!!! Please see this !! I really really think that this format of video using a very experienced dog and then using a less experienced dog to show how the dog should be learning!
Tried, he immediately lays down. I don't wanna confuse him. Recalls getting better.
I taught my dog 'back' by pressing forward toward him and named the command when he backed up. Now I stop and say 'back' if he begins to forge ahead during heel. And he does it, then I say 'heel' when he is in position.
Very interested in how you would teach a dog not to chase a cat. Can you do a video on the subject? This can be any animal that tends to run away like a cat, rabbit, deer etc.
My dog was really struggling and kept turning around to check the space before walking back. I read somewhere that it would help if you move a coffee table close to a couch and position your dog in between, that way this forces them to move back without turning around. This was a super helpful tip! Another adviceI have to expedite the learning once your dog gets the hang of it, is saying the command as a last step before they are free to eat. So the first time my dog fumbled a little until she took one step back I freed her. Then the next time around she got the hang of it and then from there, I increased the distance of her backing up.
Rob you are the man. Your insights are SO good. Simple but profound. Thank you and thank you for loving dogs
As usual, amazing video. I have to try that with my German Shepherd Delta.
I’m so excited to teach this to my Shepherd 🤩
Same to meh German Shepherd puppy 😎😎
Another winning video, thanks!
Ty for uploading this one....Love from India 😍
I teach this the same way and I like to teach tricks to build muscle but also to make the dog aware of all its body. Thanks Robert : )
shhtay??? shhhtop😂
My name is Dwayne
This is great straightforward video-looking forward to the sequel-Crawling Backwards
How long did it take for Dwayne to learn?
Great vid.
Hello robert. What is dwayne amater's breed?
Labrador Retriever
Love your videos! Btw, is Ross, from FRIENDS, your son?
Omg I was letting my pup eat a little while pushing him back. Duh! 🤦🏻
Well he still comes forward for the full treat. Dangit I gotta start all over. Lol
watch the video again and come back. Great tip! this is a tricky one (for the handler) :)
Just awesome content as usual! Can't wait to try it out with my puppy!!
This is the same way teach the dog to walk backwards. This is actually fairly easy for most dogs, just be patient. Usually one of the easiest/fun behaviors to teach!!
"fairly easy..just be patient"....hahahaah. Yeah hes great at football just be patient...for a year or 5! Just kidding with you. Walking backwards is not natural....but....it is taught and shaped like any other behavior/command. In my experience, training this command is the hardest....not saying too hard but the hardest of the 10 commands I train before releasing a dog back to its handler.
I love it, but I just do not understand one thing? You repeat « back » very often, even with your trained dog. Does « back » mean one step back?
Good morning sir. I have a 5 month old Cane Corso that is perfect with his commands such as: come sit stay lay and leave it. But if I take the leach off he almost acts like I have thought him nothing. Could give me some ideals are advise.? Thank you.
How do you got from that to just hand signal and command? Is it just a case of repetition?
My Samoyed walks backwards instead of turning around in small spaces. 😁
I have been trying to train my pup to walk back for 5 weeks. He does. When I walk toward him I constantly use verbal cue back. However when I just say verbal cue he does not(never) responds
I don't know what to do or how to add hand signal since I was just walking toward him saying "back". That works. How do I get him to learn and use verbal cue back only? Hope this makes sense.
Thank you sir big help for my German Shepherd
Would like to know how long it took to teach the shepherd and what age he was started. I'm trying with ours but he's very headstrong and young (6 months 1 week) I have tought him several other commands but need to expand our repertoire. Many thanks
I laughed everytime he said Dwayneanator.
Having a lot of trouble with this. As long as he is eating its all good - he backs up. But once I try to take the food away, after 2-3 successful attempts he just lays down in frustration and won't back up - he just totally ignores the treat, too. I'm not sure why I can't progress. I keep going back to stage one. Seems like I am teaching him that he only needs to back up when he is being fed.
Would it be OK after my dog knows how to back up I don’t keep saying back back back back back or is that necessary should I just say back once? But I do notice you keep saying backpack and then once you’re quiet the dog stops
Do you let the dog eat of the treats while walking backwards?
yes, as long as he's moving!
At what age would you recommend teaching these tricks?
I been doing this for 2 months and my dog is 5 months he only walks back when I am in front of him , and luring. Can't seem to get him to do it alone without me walking foward . This is very difficult, his a great dane .
I’ve been trying to teach my dog this for 2 months nothing is working teaching him other things is easier. Is he to young? He’s 6 months he learns like a champ great dog but this backwards he’s not comprehending.
I love your videos! You really have a way with dogs! I did have a question, I have a 12 month old rescue, she is a collie mix who I just got a month ago. She is very smart but also very high energy and was never taught not to jump as a puppy, how could I teach her not to jump now?
Amazing! Hope could teach my dog even the heel thing :(
wie immer top video!
Jees... u kept talking for 4 full min...man..
I try teaching my dog to walk backwards but she just turns her back to me when I say back
like your videos but my shepherd i got when he was 6 months old will not respond like you show he either jumps up on me for treats or lays down any ideas ?
Dewayne is getting it! I hope I do and can teach my pup, Bear! :)
My dog is a little overweight and she just sits down and then I try to encourage her to get back up and she sits on her hip when I walk towards her she doesnt go back any advice on how to correct that?
I'll have to work on this because my dog is trained to sit when I have a treat or his food in my hand.
Good video. been waiting for a decent video on teaching to walk backwards
Thanks. Hope to see you teach them walking backwards at heel too.
My dog just wants to sit down and/or like spin around and go backwards.
Muchas Gracias por enseñarme como pasar mas tienpo con mijo

How can you transition from how you taught dwayne to what you did with goofy?
It's important for protection dogs
Thanks for a really good video!
I really liek Zac George's videos... However, his tip didnt work this time on my dog.
Your tip worked instantly.
i'm shocked :)
Nice! Robert cabral big thumbs up to u
Amazing sir! Thank you
Very nice tips sir. Thank you
Thanks! Good video, very clear!
Thanks for the tutorial and advices. My challenge is I must dress a dog have one year and two months for Security and attack and defend
Rob what do you think about letting a pup (1 year and younger) sleep on couches and in owners beds?
Thank you
Sleeping on the bed and sitting on the couch is a huge privilege earned by exemplary behavior in the house first. Don't rush!
This was so helpful as my dog keep lying down! THANK YOU!!!
But how to train a new puppy
Very very nice impressive
Wonderful training sir
Congratulations
