I just watched a man teach me to play tug with a dog. ... I don’t even have a dog. But thought it was great how that dog hung on every word. Enjoyed the video.
I'm pretty new to real dog training. One thing I keep noticing about the better videos like this one, is that dog both respects and *trusts* the human. It's not based on fear. The dog knows that good things (food, treats, praise, affection, play) consistently happen when they engage with the people in an acceptable way. That makes a lot of sense to me.
Yes! I spend so much time conveying this simple concept to my clients. Be patient, be consistent, and make it FUN!
Robert has this way of making all of these things sound simple. He’s clear and articulates himself well.

Makes total sense .. I'm doing almost exactly what you do when playing thug with my dog but without having been trained to do it. Althoug this is the case I get tons of nuggets of tips and tricks along the way watching your vids. TY for sharing.
I'm realizing how much I'm doing wrong with my dog watching your videos, but we are both learning from them. Great videos still trying to find one to help my puppy from biting me and everything.

This is a great explanation. I see too many people ruin the value of tug by doing it wrong (who knew u could play ‘wrong’ with your dog?!? Lol but it’s true. You want them to be as engaged as possible and this method helps a ton.
I will say I personally disagree about the ball though. Some dogs (my own specifically) sees ball as an item that only I make fun. He can’t get it back to me fast enough and tosses it at me for another mini session of heeling or whatever before I toss it again. He has no interest in playing with it away from me. Maybe he’s an enigma but I just wanted to point out that some dogs are like that!

I learned alot from your videos as i bought a dog for my kids and the dog ended up being my responsibility i had to learn how to train him and after 2 month searching found your videos that made all the difference. It's really important you wrote that you release your grip on the toy also when you say "out". I make the mistake of trying to pull the toy out of my dogs mouth while saying the command which makes my dog release slightly and then bite down again and release slightly and bite down again a few times in succession because I guess my pulling confuses her into thinking I'm still trying to play while she is also trying to obey my command. I'll try releasing my grip next time I play tug with her at the same time I tell her to release her grip. Love the idea of letting your dog win sometimes! I do that with my dog and she loves playing tug of war with me

I notice at 2:25 when you say down, he comes out of the sit and then downs.
Listen closely at 4:15.... it is a game of you WITH the dog.... not VERSUS. It is not a competition... it is a cooperation for your dog's benefit. There is no winner and loser. The dog needs to play with the object and you need to control the game and the object FOR the dog to his benefit...

When I let her win she goes off and pull up the grass with her front teeth until i come get the tug toy. Any thought on how to stop this and why she is now doing? The game of tug can be a deep rabbit hole to dive into. Once you learn the subtle dance that is the great game of tug, it's like a paradigm shift.

my friend has a beautiful orange golden retriever and she loves playing tug with me because she usually wins, now everytime i come over to my friend she sits on my feet because she likes me so much!!! I miss that dog everytime I think about dogs.
Awesome video! There is so much to know and understand because small things make huge differences. Whats the best way to end the playing time? Kind of contradicts the motto "when he brings it, we will play". So how do you end it?
Awesome video about the game of tug. I use a tug toy from time to time when I teach my Ruby. Sometimes she is more toy motivated than she is treat motivated. Sometimes she she do not even want the treat and I have no choice to resort to a toy.
This video could also be used to explain playing with kids.
Most of the children I know don't have that jaw strength.
Actually, kid training and dog training isn't really that different. ;-)

What are the signs that you have an "engaged" dog? Is it perfect obedience? Velcroe behavior? Accepting affection? All the above? Thank you for all you do.
My baby girl could pull my shoulders out of the sockets! Oh we played TUG-TUG. When she got a bit too rowdy, NO-TUG. Robert is nice and big and fit.

Should you end the game by you or your dog winning or does it matter? ("they" also recommend that). Your info on dominance there is awesome. Thank you. I just adopted my bullmastiff 3 months ago, the third female in a span of 20 years. She's a 4 year old who had to have most of her teeth removed, but she does still have her canines. She loves to grab her toys and shake them around. Is playing tug a possibility using puppy-grade materials instead of something really hard?

Henry Corleone Sang He answered this in an “ask him anything” video! The simple answer was to hand feed the dog everything he eat including regular food, treats etc. until he learns that a hand holding/near food is a positive thing

Sir plz suggest some potty training tips for my 75 days old gsd puppy...i am not able to make him do the potty at a defined place.
Depends on what your situation is really. If he stays outside and you want him to poop in a certain place, try moving all his poo into that corner and show him it / let him smell that area. Give reward or praise when he poops in that area, and do The opposite when he poops somewhere else.
Try to read the dog and figure out when he needs to go potty, when you can tell he needs to go, you need to take him to the spot where you want him to go, and then give in reward or praise when he poops in that spot.
How can we guide the pet dog to bring back the ball back to us? Please do explain.

ah good, a dog trainer that isn't abusive to the dog to train them. This dudes right you wanna play just like you would with a person. And if someone always beats you in a game, you wont wanna play them anymore (most people). I disagree that you should always let the dog win though, should be about 40/60 to 30/70% split
I tried the method releasing tension on the tug toy to make it less interesting so that he will let the tug toy go, but when I do that he will bite my hand. Can you help me?

I have a 1yr old coated Xolo, and I'd love to start implementing a good game of tug with him. However he doesn't pull back on his toys. How do I engage with him to get him to want to play like this?

What about using the "drop" command when you want him to let go of it?
