Even in death you are helping people out to this day Ron. You are truly missed. The diesel world lost a great man and so did your Family. RIP brother!!!
To Sonya: My condolences on your loss in 2016. Thank you for keeping these videos on RUclips Sonya. They are priceless in their information. I watch them constantly as I have my 6.0 powerstroke down to removing the heads. Talk about leaving a legacy; Ron truly did !!!
I did everything DTR said 5-6 years ago on my 2005 f350 and zero engine issues for a long time. I’m so thankful these videos are still loaded. I just watched everyone again for a refresher to fix my truck.
Having these videos still up is having a master mechanic by my side as I’m working on my 6.0. RIP Ron and to his family thanks for keeping these videos up. 20 years from now people will still be using this library of knowledge!
I've been watching Rons 6.0 videos for a few years waiting for the inevitable and 3 days ago my 06 finally started puking the coolant on hills. The motor has never been opened further than replacing a coolant thermostat and o-rings for the fuel regulator. I'm glad these videos and this channel have prepared me for this day. I'll have all the parts shortly and I'm going to enjoy attacking all the weak spots on these engines with Rons shared knowledge by my side.
I guess both are correct oil is passing through it but its also surrounded by oil so it transfer heat kinda like an ice cube. The main thing I was trying to point out is when the coolant gets restricted and flow slows or stops then the heat transfer stops or slows. The oil heats up more because it lost its method of moving the heat away.
Ron, I'm no expert on the 6.0L oil cooler, but I do have a passion for knowing how things work, especially when I have to replace that part. You claim at around 3:30 into this video that the oil cooler just has coolant passing through it, and it cools the hot oil passing around its base. Bill from Powerstrokehelp claims that oil and coolant both pass through the cooler in a continuous sandwich pattern. I'd like to know for sure exactly how it works. Thanks, John
It is in a sandwich pattern. There are four holes in the top of the cooler, two for oil and the other two for coolant. I think he was just trying to simplify it, to let people know that the oil isn't what gets clogged. Btw, good luck replacing your cooler!
Thank you for posting this. Long live the 6.0. Lil money n lots of elbow grease and BOOM there that long lasting power monster. '05 keeping her forever.
Same truck here Phillip it's better to own a 05 Ford fixed allot of the 03,04. problems plus the coil springs in the front and the new grill change looks great.Drive 300k rebuild. Then you can do another 300k. good luck with your tuck.
Your videos are very helpful , I have 2004 6.0 and the screen in the oil reservoir is not ripped there is 2 of the screen materials missing, I dont know if someone was in there and replaced the cooler and just ripped out the hanging screens or if I should remove the high pressure pump and check the connecting oil passage and pump screen to find the missing pieces, I'm thinking I should look just to be sure. Btw the old cooler was plugged and the egr still looks ok, the truck has 105k,. thanks.
Ok boys. Had this happen on my beloved 06. It’s a real pain to fix. This vid and others r very helpful.. but they neglect to EMPHASIZE these are old trucks. The wiring harnesses are cranky USE CARE WHEN MOVING THEM. all plastic fasteners WILL break. Plan on $ unless u find alternatives. Many out there. Also the turbo reinstall requires extra care. Do not crack bend fold mutilate the up pipe to the turbo. Use lotsa anti seize with many test fittings. SLOW. THINK. SLOW. JUST SOME HELPFUL ADVISE I CAN PASS ALONG. enjoy the day
install a coolant filter if you own a 6.0 so it doesn't get clogged up with sand from when the block was casted. You shoul never have to replace an oil cooler if a coolant filter is installed.
Thank you for sharing, question is there any way that you can give me an idea of the cost to R&R the oil cooler including labor, thank you and have a nice day.
On a 2004 105k miles 6.0 with oil in cooling system where the oil cooler was plugged solid, and truck was parked as soon as the cooler started leaking. I looked at the egr cooler and plugged one end, let it sit and water has not gone down. How likely is it that the egr cooler is not burned out, is there a way to test it ? I'm just going to sell the truck and dont want to spend more than necessary, but I want the buyer to be satisfied.Thanks.btw keep the vids up,they are the best I have seen.
Hi their, I have a question about my 2004 6.0L. If I block off my EGR cooler will I blow head gaskets because the air pressure will be higher? thank you.
DieselTechRon, you seem to have alot of knowledge, and the videos are great. Have you ever had a 6.0L start missing around 45 mph and continues to skip until it gets to around 60 mph. I had it worked on and the mech thought he had it fixed by replacing the turbo filter. But it started doing it again? Any suggestions would be great!
Ron, I have a 6.0 and I pulled the egr ans inside is full of sludge and either coolant or oil, hard to tell just at the peek inside I took for now. Do I need to do the oil cooler as well as the egr delete. I appreciate your time and your reply. Thank you.
@JacobWilliams1968: The only viable solution for replacing the OEM oil cooler is the Bulletproof Diesel oil cooler system. Not cheap but definitely Bulletproof.
Great vid man,i'm in the middle of mine and using this vid for reference.Do you recommend any certain pattern when torqing down the bolts, middle out,or just run around it and be done?also what number to torq to? in lbs,or ft lbs? thanks again for probably the best vid on the net.
I have a 2003 f250 6.0 and had the EGR delete replace oil cooler etc. had a oil leak appear from what looked like the oil cooler. So I had oil cooler replaced again not long maybe 4000 miles it started leaking again and it seems to be leaking from a weep hole on top of oil cooler cover. What could cause this?
He and others show it in other videos. With all due respect, I don’t understand why he preps the new parts on the ground in the mess from the old ones. Parts that are going back on should not go near the ground, dirty oil, old dirty parts. Novices are going to mess up and get contaminants in the mix. I really don’t think blowing out the dirt around engine openings, the turbo, pick up tube, etc. is acceptable. If you are going to blow it off, cover and plug every single possible entry way for the flying debris that can bounce around anywhere and everywhere. But wiping with a lint free rag is the best way. Use solvent if need be. And a VOC respirator, whether you wipe or use compressed air. I see wa too many utube how tos with toxic solvents used and no respirator. Very bad example. Very bad idea.
@@5400bowen it's all good I figured it out. He's got some great content tho! Everybody has their own ways of doing things.... good thing I did the coolant system and thermostat, I pulled the hose off and the assembly inside the thermostat was missing ugh
Reason 4Believin' I have SO much respect for our friend Ron. He was also so amiable. He is a great guy and you cannot help but like him as a person. I remember guys like him before all the tough guy stuff permeated our society. Too bad, this world needs more like him, and not just to fix our cars...to fix ourselves! He was (and with utube, still is!) a shining example of what people should be like. When I grew up being truly on your friends team was normal.
Hey you mean the thermostat was missing? People remove them on gas engines to avoid them sticking. Just takes longer to warm up. I hear with diesels they won’t warm up until you drive it, so the thermostat isn’t as critical. Anyone know more about this? Am I missing something.? It’s not who is right, it is WHAT is right. And that was Rons’ attitude. Worth all the aptitude in the world if you keep that in mind. That was one of his best lessons for all of us. Listen to him say it all the time. “Some guys like to do it differently than me”. And he always is humble saying his way isn’t necessarily the best, or only good, way. The best human interaction systems require true, in good faith, cooperation and exchange of ideas in an academic manner. We didn’t get Ford 6.0 diesels by having the engineers constantly trying to subvert their colleagues thoughts and efforts. This is the one paradigm humanity seems to be forgetting lately. We didn’t get cell phones, or the internet or solar electricity or........true cooperation is much more powerful than competition. They best way is a healthy, friendly, good natured competition within a much stronger, more dominant, cooperative stance. Don’t forget a sense of humor and true brotherly love. Bless Rons’ soul. And on the radio right now? “With a Little Help From My Friends.”.
Does someone knows why the fan clutch won't work if you just put it brand new. I mean it does work when I turn my truck on but after a while it stops and gets overheating.. I also put a new temperature sensor
ismael melero studded and deleted doesn’t mean it won’t blow out gaskets. Could have cracked heads or studs weren’t torqued properly and may have lifted
I highly doubt it. Getting ready to do mine, pulling 14,000 lbs, my ECT was 200 and my EOT was 230. With no oil cooling at all, who knows how hot the EOT would get while pulling. Sorry, but this motor seems to require oil cooling. I'll install my coolant filter first, change the filters a couple times than do my oil cooler, STC HPOP, standpipes/dummy plugs, and delete my EGR. Cost: 139, 8, 160, 50, 100, 110 = $567 give or take.... that's not a lot to ensure it to last.
I dropped about $8000 a couple months ago to have all new injectors and a new turbo on my 05 F350 (6L) and the other day I started losing power and burning blue. The local Diesel shop hooked up to Diagnostic computer and I am told I need a oil cooler!! another $4000!!!! How hard is this? im tempted to try this myself , no much of a mechanic, but have more time than $$$ any thoughts?
did you use a torque wrench to bolt down the oil cooler into the housing and the whole assembly to the truck. If so what poundage did you use on them. going to replace mine tommorow
If you buy a '03-'07 Ford Diesel, they are Lemons. Unless you are a mechanic and know what you are getting into, stay FAR away from those years of Ford Diesels. I have put over 10k in Engine repairs and my '05 truck ONLY has 120k miles on it. Now I have to replace the oil cooler next week. It NEVER ends with these crappy trucks, never! Buyer beware!!!
This is going to sound retarded I know but. Is there any way to delete the oil cooler all together just as you would the EGR cooler? I recently bought an 06 and I am getting all my delete kits in line for a weekend project. I have already wired the high idle switch in and have ordered the EGR cooler delete. I'm going to leave my EGR valve in and plugged in to keep from throwing a CEL. I notice that the oil cooler upgrades can be a little pricey, so do you recommend any certain brand or company
Question my wrench light(Limp home mode) comes on after driving my 2006 6.0 powerstroke around 50 miles. Do you know what that could be from And my truck squeaks 1 or 2 times about 5 seconds after I start it up, any knowledge would be appreciated. Sorry I'm a female and mechanically retarded, I just love big diesel trucks
+FULLY LIT got it fixed, was oil cooler, hotter than the coolant, so I got new oil cooler, and a egr delete plus an sct x4 tuner, the squeak was the turbo, got a new one.

oil in the water of a 7.3 diesel Ford F-250 water cooler alright
