Hiking Alone for Landscape Photography

- In this video I go on a landscape photography hike up Yewbarrow Fell in the Lake District, England. I struggle to make sense of the expansive view infront of me, so I turn my attention to a smaller, more intimate scene which I photograph with my Fuji X-T3 camera and 55-200 Lens.

'Every hill I climb I climb twice - one for you, one for me.' Appreciate it, Tom!
"Arrrrh! This is the problem with RUclips! Oh, man, every hill I climb I climb twice. One for you, one for me. Come 'ere." We appreciate you, Thomas!
Keep it up, Thomas!
Thanks for sticking around until the end 👍
@@ThomasHeatonPhoto it's very relaxing and enjoyable to watch until the end.
Yes thank you for climbing the hills twice so we could enjoy the trip too!
@@zenphotojourney The invisible selfie stick. That's so weird. How do they do that?
I really enjoy the waterfall photo. One of the main reasons why I watch you and not one of the other thousand RUclipsrs who work in photography is because your channel feels like a glimpse into your real life and not just a social media image. I think many photographers have moments in which they feel like you did on this hike but your channel is the only one which makes me go "I'm not alone with these struggles" rather than "I must be unfit for photography because I'm not as good as the others".
Thomas you are the B-roll champion. Your hard work is very much appreciated. Thanks.
I liked the minimalism of that waterfall image FWIW.
Meanwhile, somewhere on Vancouver Island, Adam Gibbs walks out his front door. "Bloody hell! Someone's nicked me van!"
🤣
Maybe they should have swapped vans instead? Ha ha!
The thing I like about your videos is your honesty Thomas. At the moment I'm enjoying my photography, I feel like I'm on a roll. But until recently I was down amongst the dead men. That's life!
Don’t worry about not getting the “shot!” I can’t speak for everyone but I really enjoy being taking along the journey with you. Due to my job I can’t be going off to great locations very often, so just being able to go with you is why I love watching your videos. I also appreciate the honesty, it’s not about getting an amazing shot, it’s about being there and experiencing it in the first place, and the camera is just an excuse to go :)
"And the mountains won't remember me" - Peter McKinnon.
Thanks so much for taking us on your adventures Thomas.
What I envy you for most is that you are completely alone up there. That’s why I do landscape photography. Just my dog and me.
I know some people wouldn't understand but I too love being alone in nature.
So basically you are not alone. It can be hard being alone, but also great.
The drone shots show just how “insignificant” one is, when in the mountains.
I nearly cried when Thomas said that he sold the van! But I held it in when he said he had bought another. 😅🤦🏻♂️😎👊🙄
Thomas Heaton is the King of the B-roll
As a novice photographer I find myself often looking around and not finding anything that really catches my eye. Now it could very well be that I suck at composition hahaha but let’s not talk about that. So I can only imagine how hard it Lucy be for seasoned photographers to be inspired. I do have to say though your “backyard” is amazing. So many colors, hills, mountains, lakes. So peaceful. And you guys actually close the gates behind you. Imagine that. Well done Tom.
Thank you for always being an inspiration and reminding me that it’s ok to go out, spend the day and not come back with a photograph I love. It’s ok. Thank you.
Unfortunately that's most of my days but I still love being out there! lol
Whether you get a shot or not, your videos are worth watching. There’s beautiful scenery all around you and we get to see it through you. Totally worth the watch.
That’s the reason we love watching it till end
The photograph seems like two separate photographs. The gold color is spectacular. Very nice.
It’s been 6 months since I last hit the shutter. Tom Heaton inspiring me as ever man I miss it. One day Tom one day I’ll shoot with you. Life goals.
If you could know how deeply i understand your feeling...... thank you for your sincerity.... you talk even about difficult and crisis moments of photography and this is a very big thing! I really appreciate it! Thank you!
No, thank you. Love the hikes, the photos, and the video. Feel like I've done the hike too.
Thanks for being honest! I'm pretty new to landscape and I do mostly hiking and photo like that! It's nice to remind myself that it's not always about getting a big shot. Enjoy the day. No pressure. Have fun!
Me and my 6 Year old Son watched this together and he said he liked it and it “looked like lightning going down the mountain but it’s just water”
What a beautiful place. Makes me miss my time in England and Scotland. Thanks for the video.
Well as long as the hike was enjoyable..... Sometimes we can't have it all. I often struggle with hiking and concentrating on photography. Completing the hike or stopping at each potential shot, getting the tripod out, finding the perfect composition waiting for the light ... especially if I have company. Dilemma dilemma ... difficult combination: Photography or hike & snapshot
That's how I often feel. Great video Thomas thanks!
Im typing this on my mac before watching the video on my tv. I know this is going to be a good watch. I received your book a couple of days ago. It is perfect. Thank you for enriching my life with what you do. You have inspired me to escalate my photography skills the last three years. Best regards.
Thomas, I don't comment often enough (sorry about that). Just wanted to say that I always find your videos so calming. Like listening to some melody. Serenity!
I enjoyed the waterfall shot. Whether you get a photo or not doesn’t matter. I enjoy your videos as I’m still learning and it motivates me to get out there and find new areas. Please keep them coming and thanks!
Your videos encouraged me to pick up a camera again and look at my environment differently. This video reminds me that great views don’t necessarily make for great photos but it’s still worthwhile to go out and take a look at what’s there.
Thanks for the good work minimizing the wind noise.
Your videos are the best. I can just imagine how difficult it is to setup the video camera and reenact each scene then dismantle it afterwards. Thanks for your sacrifice, mate. We love your content.
As I watched you climb down that steep part of the hill (and up at the beginning, if I’m being honest), I thought of how you’d have to climb back up to get the camera, and I imagined you griping about it as you did it-and at the end, you actually showed it! _This_ is what makes your channel such a joy and pleasure to watch!
That last quote tho.... You always make us feel we were there and that is so priceless. Not many of us have the luxury of abundant nearby landscape or able to afford even a getaway from work/survival to do that but with your videos, we can dream and envision one day, many years later perhaps, we can get there.
A cynic looking to find fault (probably through jealousy) could look at the selfies of you walking through the landscape and say "how vain, I couldn`t do that". But you pull it off without coming over as such in the slightest. Instead it`s like you`re talking to me personally as a friend. That`s quite a gift Thomas!
As a loyal viewer from Singapore, that waterfall shot was honestly stunning. That minimalist composition, that moody atmosphere created by the setting sun, I really think it was a wonderful shot!
I would rather watch a 20-30 minute video shot with soul and only one photo than a 10 minute video made to just churn out 3-4 average images 👌🏼
Please do another 40/45 minute hiking epic before the summer is over! Great work.
I confess, when I saw the footage I was eager to see what images you would capture. But you were honest and again brought reality about landscape photography and art in general! Thank you for another great content!
I just came home from the HOH rainforest and will go back tomorrow. It is warm with good weather and everything is blooming and vibrant green. The perfect time of year let Mr Page know :)
I like the waterfall photo. I also enjoyed the scenes of backlit grasses and steep hillsides with tiny plants clinging to the cracks in the rock as you climbed up. The green at the beginning was so lush! We don't have that here but where I grew up it was very green. So I enjoy seeing that.
I liked the shot you eventually took. I've been watching your channel for 2 or 3 years and personally think your best images are those where you go for the more abstract image, so I think it's a good thing that it seems to be the direction you are going. I haven't a fraction of your talent, but there are cliches in photography and the big landscape with a big sunset/sunrise is perhaps one of them, no matter how well conceived. With abstraction you can escape the cliche and let your imagination do the work. I think it's a great way to go creatively. Keep up the good work.
This video made my day! Been home alone because I tested positive for covid just dreaming to be out hiking again. Thanks for cheering me up!
Great video Thomas. Next to the beautiful scenery and great shots from about every angle, I enjoy your honesty telling just what you feel when thinks don't work the way you had planned (oh but you didn't plan...). Hiking is one thing but filming your walks is something extra that you do very very well. Must be a lot of work putting it al together in those videos. Hope you got home safe and that we members can enjoy your next trip on this channel.
Yep, watched it all the way to the end 👍
Best plug of your channel so far Thomas, hehe. Made me laugh. Also, I think grown is a better word than changed. Safe travels mate!
I've just spent 20 minutes of my life watching you clamber up and down a mountain to get a less than great shot. And I enjoyed every minute of it. Another favourite youtuber of mine, Mark Denny, taught me the most important part of landscape photography is to enjoy the experience, because you will get less than perfect photos sometimes.
BTW. I'm enjoying your book. Taking it a few images at a time. Thanks Tom.
great as usual. Got Volume One last week, award yourself a gold star. Fully recommend it.
It was a beautiful day and climb...eh, don't feel bad about not getting that image you wanted...the good light wasn't there. It's okay, this is why I started watching this channel...Thomas Heaton climbing mountains in the UK...absolutely stunning views even if you don't take a photo or get the photo you wanted. I am envious of the views! If only I had mountains here to climb, I would...twice on Sunday! Absolutely stunning mate!!
Loved the video! We all should try to free ourselves from the notion that we must always be the most 'productive' we can be. It was a good, tiring hike, and we got to be with you on this journey. I call this a win.
Appreciate the truth behind your reasons behind not really feeling it. I feel that way, too, sometimes. As for the waterfall shot, I do like it.
Nooo!! Not the van! 😔🤣 Looking forward to the build of the new one. Love your inspiring channel, thank you for effort. 😃
Just two days ago I started my own photography website thanks to the years of inspiration from this channel, I also used squarespace with your code, which helped quite a bit. Thanks for all that you do Thomas I am very excited to see where this takes me.
Not many landscape photographers have their personality in their images. Love you work!
Enjoyed this video as always. Thank you.
I do a lot of hiking and could stay hours watching and photographing the sun glowing over the peaks. I love it :)
It is good to realise witch direction your photography is taking or leading you.
I think the waterfall photograph is subtile and minimalistic and worth the hike!
For some reason, this is the kind of videos I like the most. Thanks!
I have fond memories of the Wasdale Valley and the Hard Knot Pass from when my Dad used to take me there hiking as a kid. As a Brit now living in Malaysia, where it's hard to do landscape photography (the sun goes up and down in about ten minutes) your videos give me great nostalgia for 'Blighty, thanks Tom!
Not wanting to get back up after a long hike. Know that feeling. Thanks
You are as ever an inspiration to us lesser channels. Thanks
My wife and I always stick around until the end of your videos. Great video, nice image, and best of luck with the Van. Thank you for the inspiration to get out and hike and shoot.
I love a great tutorial as much as the next guy, but I really do appreciate these types of videos. Sometimes it's nice to see professionals suffer from the same things we do in the field.
Your still one of the only photographers, I really enjoy to watch on youtube. No matter if you take one photo, twenty photos or no photo on a twenty minute video... ;-) Keep up the work!
Please keep rambling on, it's the only way this American will get to see the rest of the world. I appreciate your thought process.
Gotta admit, thanks to you and this video I'm giving Squarespace a try.
the effort that goes into each shot man is amazing and you do so very seamlessly, really love this one, one of my favorites I think
Thanks for doing these videos:
1) because it’s good to know that sometimes it’s ok just to not feel it and come away not feeling you’ve got a banger in the bag. If it happens to awesome photographers like Thomas Heaton, then the rest of us shouldn’t feel so bad.
2) I’m scared of heights. And frankly, screw some of these hikes you do. Thanks for doing them so I can see what it’s like without feeling like I’m going to pass out :)
thank you so much tom for featuring our grand canyon video as the suggested vid of the week🙃so much appreciated! i hope things are good on your side. the news with the camper van certainly sound very exciting!
I live in the Eastern part of the USA. We don't have the big wide expanses for landscapes. As I've matured as a photographer, I have gravitated more and more to what I call "intimate" landscapes. Tighter in shots of the beauties of nature around here. We all go through phases. I've taken the intimate landscapes to the extreme this summer with macro shots of nature's colors and textures. Not that earlier shots were "wrong" but those I take now are more pleasing to my eye. I like the direction I've seen in your photography over the last year or so. well done.
8:00 That camp site down there was where we camped on my first trip to the Lake District back in the late 1970s. I recognised Wast Water immediately, even after about forty years - thanks for the nostalgia trip :)
I like that you are taking us through your different stages of photography...even when you think your video might not be that good .at least to some of us is great
Sunrise sunset is a crutch. I'm board with them. Glad you are morphing. Like the videos,. It is all about getting the photo though.
Though u dont feel u got the photos u were looking for, your videography and edit was on point for this one! Really enjoyed it! 👍🏻
In the end, the absence of a 'final image' does not diminish the episode for me. The video that you got- the drone shots were magic. The whole of the episode was loaded with magic cinematography.
Also, I can only imagine how tired you got, having not been hiking in months, then attempting that steep 'hill'...
Paused the video to say that this is super well cut, and the music choice is fantastic. Carry on.
I love that you've bought a Delica. They're one of those weird vans that for some reason is really cool.
Can’t believe the vans gone but I’m sure the next one will better suit your needs. Thanks for the video Tom.
As always Thomas....great video!! Thanks
I'm not sure if you noticed it, but the waterfall photograph kinda looks like 2 person kissing, with the waterfall separating them.
I could feel the immense vastness of the hills even though its just through your video, amazing experience and thank you for sharing!
Yeay I guessed the new video camera correctly in the last vid! Great video as allways Tom.
Very nice. I enjoyed this. The waterfall shot is beautiful.
Tom, I understand your creative quandary, and I add that your last efforts have lacked (imo) the spark of YTs back. But, I am watching for that shift you're going to make, because you have the talent and desire and drive to carry on. And I'm so encouraged by your courage to continue creating content and sharing w/ us a rightful and painful part of this creative process, through thick and thin. I'm still w/ you baby, and carry on!
Thank you for hiking that mountain TWICE for us. I appreciate your hard work you did for us.
I Love you mate. in this video You have shared alot about feelings and more than you know my friend, you have helped me so much. thank you Thomas. thank you. I am becoming a better photographer with your help. it's priceless Tom.
Much love
Jeff
Thomas, the video of you hiking up the MTN. was great, the shift in camera angles, made for a very cinematic feel. As a stills photographer, I must say this style of video and the result was as enjoyable as if you had gotten a banger of a shot. Good job.
Nice composition of the waterfall, loved the way the golden rays falling on the thin stream of waterfall. Very inspiring Thomas, I like the way you look for the composition which satisfies you and not going on clicking all the views. That way you click only the best part of the journey and you remember all the details of that shot.
Magnificent views, you are so lucky to be out enjoying it. Can’t wait till we get out of lockdown.
What an image, it was beautiful and the effort taken to record it as if there are 2 people doing it. You literally climbed it twice. Effort.
Tom, Tom, Tom, It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks about the waterfall pic, but you already know..... We all have days when the connection isn’t there. Good honest video.
Really appreciate the effort going into th B roll, I know nothing about video production but the effort is obvious 😀
I watched to the end, because I appreciated your vulnerability about what I believe many of us are experiencing in some way right now: the effects of isolation and introspection and loss of what we once had or enjoyed. It's hard. Thanks for taking us along on your walk.
Will miss the catering clips but I'm sure.. (the new van needs a name!) will bring her own entertainment 👍🏻 ATB Tom
Now this is why I subscribe to your channel... honest, subtle, less is more, and of course an 'absolutely stunning' image.. brilliant!
This is the type of video I enjoy most from you Thomas. Keep it up.
What a great waterfall image!
I think I know whats your Problem on the Hill "there is no lonely Tree" and so you are not happy! Greating from Austria Hans
Servus!
I believe sunburst with that waterfall would be perfect...
I've been enjoying your videos for a few years now Tom and don't think I've ever left a comment - I just contemplate and absorb them and always remain totally inspired and entertained, so just wanted to say this one time for all your work, wonderful, absolutely wonderful! Thanks a bunch and here's to all the videos to come. Oh, and have just taken delivery of your book and to coin a phrase - Absolutely Stunning!
Always a good yarn young Thomas. Thanks for sharing. Hope to see you in the land of OZ one day soon. Come on down you won’t regret it.
Great video Tom, image was fantastic, good luck with the van and the upcoming trip. Cheers, Duade
Looking forward for the next video
The shot was better than I've ever taken...but I agree it was no world beater! The video was fantastic though, the transparency and honesty, and the insight into your process made it a great watch. Nice drone footage too 👌
I watch every video to the end!👍👊
