  • This is my Landscape Photography TV Pilot, Wildscapes. This photography show was filmed in 2016, fueled on a shoestring budget and dreams of making the big time. Sadly the concept of my Landscape Photography Television Series never got picked up by any production companies, so today I am finally releasing it here. It was filmed in Iceland and all images were taken on a Canon 5DSR. Enjoy.

    A very relaxing watch, classic Heaton.

    Beautiful, I cannot understand why you could not find enough interest in a television show of this nature, my take away is that we are fortunate in that we get to go with you on your many adventures whether it is to Patagonia, the African continent, Iceland or my part of the world when you have come to the United States. I do have to admit I do have a preference for your British and Scottish landscapes as I am not easily able to visit those glorious locations. Being 67 I pretty much explore my own little piece of the world, the southeastern US, namely the Georgia coast and inland areas which are full of historic sites. Please continue your work as you are such a great inspiration to us all, thank you.

    I really really appreciate that you kept the realness in this pilot. Most shows want the viewers to believe that everything was perfect. The host went out did their thing and came back no hiccups just the way it was planned. So to see you fall and get lost or have a poor shoot, not that you did, it would be a wonderful change of pace for a travel show. I particularly love that you included the fall in the intro. Brilliant! Would absolutely love to see a show like this on mainstream media and to get more people interested in landscape photography. Your style of cinematography has changed over time, but it was a nice throw back to your older vlogs with the style and music and made me smile. Really enjoy your content past, present and look forward to the future.

    In all honesty, I started watching the TH channel because of the old style vlogging. I learnt everything about landscape photography and purchased my full frame after watching TH photography videos. Very nostalgic feeling. I just miss the old style vlogging and esp the canon camera. I downloaded all TH videos in his channel to watch them after work and get inspired to get out there and photograph.

    By my count, 8 “Absolutely Stunning” or variations there of. I love this program but being in the television industry, I can understand why producers would want to change certain elements of the show. It’s perfect for us who follow your adventures all the time but a general audience might not relate enough to hold interest.

    • @alangauld6079
      @alangauld6079 4 года назад +6

      That's exactly what I thought. It's great for photography nerds but the average viewer would just think what a nerd! Moments of brilliance, but not a mass market show. I'd like to see a series where landscape photography was one episode but they had other specialists in studio work, macro, portrait, sport, wildlife etc. But a series all on landscapes is probably too specialised.

    • @joao.s.cardoso
      @joao.s.cardoso 4 года назад +6

      @@alangauld6079 purely technical shows tend to die because there is so much you can teach, Shows about the experience, travel to amazing locations, and showing the process of making great photographs is something that would have a lot more longevity and has the capacity to attract people that loves nature and see other countries, photographers that prefer se see the experience and the work involve to get the that spot, and also the more technical aspects of it. IMHO

    • @dougmckillop9352
      @dougmckillop9352 4 года назад +10

      Not so sure, Kenneth. Who would have thought so many would regularly watch baking, sewing, repair shops etc. There has been an exponential growth in recent years in both photography (as everyone has one on their phone) and in hill walking/hiking/adventures. Travel has always been of interest even local (take Coast or Julia Bradbury’s walks). Everyone loves an enthusiast ( Tom is hardly nerdy). I think with the right format a programme showcasing the best scenery this Country and abroad has to offer would captivate both enthusiastic and armchair adventurers. The photography is just the gel to pull it together. And Tom presents well.

    • @GaryGough
      @GaryGough 4 года назад +11

      I respectfully disagree with your comment. The film Thomas created was aimed at a like-minded audience and not mainstream viewers. Fishing and football shows are only great if like those genres! Millions of people own and use cameras so why wouldn’t this work? Tom’s presentation skills were top-notch and the show felt just like an episode of Spring Watch. Excellent!

    I started a business in 2002 called "Scottish Photo Tours". It was a photo holiday business and we attracted hundreds of photographers from all over the world to join us for a photo holiday in Scotland. In 2005, I also made a pilot like this - these were in the days before RUclips and drones - and we tried to get it serialised by BBC and STV, but neither were interested at the time. I wish RUclips was about when I was doing SPT - it would have been awesome.

I hope you know work like this motivates other creatives to keep shooting.

    Some years ago (7+), our local public broadcasting station here in the SF Bay Area showed a program on a weekly basis called Wild Photo Adventures hosted by Doug Gardener, a well known wild life photographer. It had high quality production values (there was a 3 man crew with him), and he travelled all over the US and Canada giving lots of photography tips about exposure, aperture, white balance etc., as well as how to best find, track and photograph the wildlife. Often he was accompanied by local guides/experts. He even did episodes on photographing wildflowers, waterfalls (including light painting at night). Each program was 30 mins in length, and as an added bonus, always ended with outtakes and bloopers a la Gavin H. You can find many of these programs on RUclips on The Natural History Channel. He would always start the program by saying “it’s not just about the photograph but the outdoor experience “ which I think you often say in many of your videos.

    Thanks for sharing this Tom. I remember you talking about this way back then (where has the time gone). I think the pilot was aimed just at the right level. Not to technical and with a good balance of travel themed topics. Hopefully you'll keep working on the concept...you never know.👍

    As someone said below, this is the TH that drew me to your channel. Amazing. And has rekindled my love for landscape photography.

    This is still one of my favorite productions from you. I liked all of the images, especially the first one and the last one. Job well done.

    I for one, absolutely love the fact that you didn't spend time on talking about camera settings, but took us through what we were actually looking at. Loved it.

    A wonderful video Thomas, just the right amount of information, not too much technical stuff for the mass market. I would most certainly enjoy a series like this. Really well done.

    I really like this a lot. I've seen the occasional photography "program" on Netflix and Amazon, but I will tell you this: I didn't watch the clock while watching this. Great concept. A little science thrown in to boot. Go for it. Send it around again.
