Pointing out that you turn the adjuster 'up' on pasenger side and 'down' on the driver's side was a vital piece of info which will have probably saved me having to remove the caliper and hub to reconnect the bits inside after i'd wound it apart 👍
Happy to help, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
This is very good clear instructions, can you do more of this please. I’m a automotive engineering student and this helps me a lot rather than listening to my boring instructors.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank you so much man, I recently had my alloys done and I thought the hand brake had seized, I’ve now realised (thanks to you) it’s because lifting the car increases tension
Glad I could help, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
You’re a legend mate, I was going crazy and didn’t know the passenger side needed turning the other way to tighten 😂 thanks a bunch as other videos didn’t mention that!
Happy to help, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Good clear instuctions, and good camera views. Thanks for sharing!!
+Sigourney's Beaver thanks, nearly as good as your name 😂
Thanks mate, good & clear instructions and camera shots from start to finish!
You didn't skip important steps like a lot of these home vids do... well done!
Glad it helped, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video thanks. I managed to do it without even using a jack. I took out 1 bolt and gently rolled the car into position then used the screwdriver, which was easy as you showed exactly where it was. Worked perfectly, top man!
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Be careful tho, you might have binding you won’t no about it, hench why it’s best to jack it up
Someone who explains with clear and concise instructions. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
probably the best video on youtube iv seen, easy to follow and not to much talking. glad you showed us your adjusting both wheels as most if not all videos iv seen only adjust one but dont really say 2nd wheel also needs adjusting
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Brilliant video. Just followed it step by step on my e90. Now set at 5 to 6 clicks. Perfect, thank you
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Excellent vidio
Thank you sir. You saved me a lot of time and money on my daughter's bmw 328i while doing a rear brake job.
Glad it helped Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
The handbrake lever should be released and the spring beneath the lever compressed before adjusting the shoes. You can push it back with a screwdriver until it catches on a small retaining clip located inside the spring, then decompressed after (this is to put tension on the cables). The normal jacking points can be used for each individual wheel.
Thanks Stevo for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Oh nice 👌
Stevo, that means that we don´t need to lift the car from de rear center point (dificult to do) but instead we can do it each wheel individualy. rifht? first one, then, with the same lift, the other! correct?
Thank you sir, finally a video where this procedure is explained nice and clearly 👍
Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you very much for making this video. Just saved me a few quids and MOT fail. Brilliant.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Best home video by far re F30. Thank you.
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
That “And I” was perfect👌🏼
Well done 👍🏻 Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Simple but effective.👍👍🚗🚗
Sure is! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video and tutorial pal, thank you very much for that.
Glad it helped Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank You for a very good video very simple and effective
Glad it was helpful!, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great vid!
Going to adjust mine now, I have bigger alloys (17” to 18” 8/8.5j) plus lowering springs (45mm front 25mm rear) which is probably knocked the tension on the cables all over the gaff.
Car barely holds on a hill!
Give them a tweak, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Ledge! Keep 'em coming. I like to know what I am considering when it comes to price against time in the garage.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank you! Worked fine on my BMX X3 E83 2008.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
good video , not sure about the brembos lol , but great vid none the less
Me neither, 😂 Thanks mike for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thankyou, perfect instructions, off to try a bit later 👌
Youve earnt a new sub 😉
Thanks for the sub! and Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 worked perfectly buddy, 4 clicks I now have and its stopped rolling on hills 😂
Recently tried this after new brakes fitted handbrake lever comes up to high 6 clicks, the problem is doing it this way 1 wheel up at a time with an auto in neutral its hard to feel if the shoes are touching at there is so much resistance turning the driveshaft and gearbox even though its in neutral ignition on (not sure why )
Have to release the tension to handbrake cables by pushing spring in under handbrake gator , then jack rear up with both wheels off the ground to get a better feel for adjustment
Only noticed you're using manual in this video, still a very helpful video thanks
Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks very much.Clear instruction.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊 Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Awesome vid man. Thank You from the Czech Republic!!!
Thanks for watching, hows the weather over there, we are in a heat wave here in the UK 😎😎
I'm glad we are in cold wave for about 2 weeks. But generally speaking we are getting warmer too...
Great video. Thanks for taking the time.
my pleasure, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Good job, thumbs up from Germany!
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome information thanks mate!!
No problem 👍Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks man great tutorial. I now have a job to do tomorrow . . .😣 Its soooo gona rain isnt it. . .
Good luck with the weather, thanks for your comments 👍🏻👍🏻🚘
Great. Thanks a lot. I need to do that soonest
You should! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Very useful, thanks. Solved some of the handbrake catching/scraping type noises I get, seem to have gone since tightening, but still get a scrape on hard left turn.
Great stuff thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻
I had this as well on hard left turns. I had a build up of corrosion in the hub which caused an insanely annoying squeaking/high pitched grinding sound and slower speeds. Had it removed under warranty and after that that scraping sound came up on left turns, but I think by the end of my spirited 40 minute drive home I’m pretty sure it disappeared🤔 I kind of forgot about it tbh. The mechanic also advised me to occasionally drive slowly and gently apply the handbrake to take off any corrosion in the drums. Since I never apply the brake brake whilst moving (I’m not drifting my 325d) I’ve never actually worn down the drums, so it makes sense 🙂
Thanks it helped a lot
Glad it helped, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Yeah after having some corrosion removed from my drums I’m now up to around 7 clicks which I don’t like, want to adjust them down to 4 as well.
Only issue I see here is consistency in both sides? Surely both sides need to be exactly the same, so a method of counting turns or something similar should be used? I might be wrong and I’ve never adjusted a handbrake but that’s just what I can understand.
Maybe count each notch on that adjusting wheel so you do the same each side. This obviously only works if it’s equal to start with🤔
You just need to adjust the shoes with the wheels until they are just touching them back off slightly you don’t need to worry about balancing because the cable adjuster will balance for you 👍🏻👍🏻Thanks for the comments 👍🏻👍🏻
1. Handbrake completely off.
2. Adjust one side until you can't spin the wheen anymore.
3. Go back 8 clicks.
4. Check if wheel spins freely.
5. Repeat the process on the other side.
6. Check if handbrake lever works properly.
7. Have a beer.
Good video cheers just about to adjust mine
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Awesome video man, thanks a lot, helps a ton.
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video, nice clear instructions. My only question, why do you adjust the drivers side down (top to bottom) to tighten but the passengers side up (bottom to top)? Thanks
The the assembly is reversed on the other side, Great spot , Thanks for the great information👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks mate very handy video. Those wee adjuster screws are quite hard to spot!
Yes they can be a bit tricky, but well done for sorting it👍🏻, thanks for watching
Very instructional! Good job
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻
Good job thank you 👍😉
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Nice and easy explained well done
Thanks happy new year 👍🏻
Great vid, have noticed I did some things wrong here on my own car. I can not find a suitable place on the suspension arm to get the car up safely mine is a F36. Could try jacking it up centrally? So both wheels are up would that work?
No the arms need to be level as if the wheels are on the ground, or the hand brake cables are stretched, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I was able to use a long thin flatblade screwdriver to do the adjustment while leaving the wheel on, and without damaging the wheel..
well done its a fine art you have achieved, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Awesome video...
I recently changed my rotors and pads and my hand brake stopped working. I replaced the hand brake pads and springs and still cant get the wheel to stop moving even after using the adjusting wheel.
I did jack the car up in the middle of the chassis. Would that cause the adjustment wheel not to work
? I have it fully extended and the wheel still spins.
something is not right there, did you clean the grease off the inside of the brake disc, (put on to prevent corrosion after manufacture) How many clicks do you have on the lever? Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
thanks for info , gonna do that this week end
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for the video but why do some people say you need to slack the spring off under the handbrake? Is it really not that important to do so? Thanks.
I have not had any issues 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks mate I'll be doing this tomorrow.....great guide nice and detailed (unlike most on here) thanks again buddy.
Hi great video but really interested in how you fitted those brembo brake kit as I’m looking into upgrading my E92 thanks
it on another video lol Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks for the informative video!
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Big help thanks!!
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Really helpful, but I can't figure out how to detach the spring at the handbrake lever inside the car. If I push with a screw driver after putting the handbrake lever down, it's difficult to push and just springs back. Any advice welcome, thanks.
You don't need to do anything with the spring, you can do it all at the rear shoes adjustment, just jack the car up on the bottom arm under the suspension spring just enough to lift the wheel from the road, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video. Shame I don't have nice a flat surface to do this on my drive.
Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Thanks for the video, but tighten lug nuts in a star pattern from now on!
No worries! Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video! I'm guessing this process will work on a F31?
Yes it will Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video man !! Only i just wonder how the brakes get thesame tension left and right does the system automaticly spreads the tension 50/50 equal ?
there is a balance lever that both the brake cables attach to behind the handbrake lever, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 ok i have noticed that there must be something because my handbrake is perfect like it should hé :-) Thanks for the good video its realy clear !!
I have adjusted from the rear adjusters to perfection but handbrake still needs to go all the way up to engage....I think this automatic adjuster spring is lost its tension but not sure. I've adjusted without engaging the service lock on the handbrake side I dont know if that makes any difference or not but I'm struggling to see the purpose of engaging the service lock dont think it would make any improvement on the tightens of the handbrake
if the adjusters are correct and the handbrake is not right, you might need to remove the brake discs and check all is well, ie the shoes are not worn, or delaminated, the mechanism is not ceased, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great video. I've just had new pads n discs fitted and handbrake has gone from 6 clicks to about 12. What would cause this? The garage did say they had to clean a lot of crap from the drum/shoes.
The rear adjusters need tight to be tighter, they have been over cautious with the hand brake shoes 👍🏻👍🏻
I have more or less the same problem.
Replaced my brake pads, cleaned everything up and it now almost seems as if it is worse than before.
Tightened my pads as per the instructions here and "everywhere", and even though it seems to stop the wheels OK when the car is in the air after only 2 clicks, when parking in a steep-ish incline I have to pull the lever up to my ears to make it stop - and it only barely stops :(
I am starting to think that the cables must have stretched, and with this stupid system there is no way to tighten anywhere to take up some of the slack, and I am looking at even more work and expense to have the cables renewed.
Thank you for help.
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Got some instruction that the right point to back off the shoe is the point whereby there is just a small amount of contact with the rotor inner surface (drum). Does that make sense or should the shoe completely clear the metal surface at the right adjustment point?
usually you would adjust right up, and then back off, until it rotates with slight friction Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
very good instruction, its the same on the bmw f30 2013 ? i go on it. And with the spring under the cuff nothing is done, no permission or anything? only on back side tighten park brake ? Thx David
They are all very similar, thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 and this ? www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/BMW-3-Series-E90/BRAKES-Parking_Brake_Adjusting/images_small/pic04.jpg
Helped me out alot.well stopped the mrs moaning the handbrakes crap lol.cheers
It wii be short lived, she will soon find something new to Moan about😂😂
what exactly did you do in the car with the handbrake? did you remove something?
Nothing to do inside, it’s all about adjusting the rear shoes, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Hello, if you adjusting by screwdriver, the parking lever is up (tighten) or down (released)? Service manual shows: Press the spring under the lever, lock it and than you can adjusting. I am quite confused about that. What is the right way? Thank you!
you adjust with the handbrake released, and you don't need to worry about the spring,Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Bloody brilliant I owe you a pint
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Can i try it this way, keep my handbreak up to 4 clicks and then adjust it so its tight at 4.
No, it won’t work the if the adjustment is correct at the shoes, the rest will look after itself👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Great! Thank you!
Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻
Are those Brembo brake covers? Like the ones you get off eBay trying to decide on whether or not to get a set or are they genuine brembos?
This is the video I did on them, ruclips.net/video/TAVkjaWS6-E/видео.html , Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

How do u adjust the handbrake at the handbrake end? Do you need a special tool?
You cant, it is all done at the rear Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
What torque did you use in the bolts? Can you share? Thank you
I don't use a torque wrench, old skool feel the torque, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Nice AA jack 😂
😂Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
I've done like in the video, and after the adjustment everything is nice but 2-3 days later I have to pull the handbrake up a lot again. Do you know what it could be?
You might have a cable starting to break, or the outer case is crushing, need to check the linkage and cables, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Well done and very helpful video, thanks a ton!
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻
Bit late to the party ; I've changed rotor and pads, and afterward the handbrake was completely ineffective- it was fine before. I've adjusted the rear right which I was the only difference ... but its made no difference. What am I doing wrong? Jacking up on side body jack point the issue? Or the 'balance spring' underneath the handbrake shroud...?
Jack the car on the rear spring carrier, then adjust one side at a time, it will come back, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 do I have to compress the spring under the handbrake shroud before work? (Came from another similar video)
not normally needed.👍🏻
Don't you have to push the spring back in the handbrake first ?? And do u keep the hand break on while doing this
No, don't touch the spring & handbrake off, Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Yes you do. Lock the spring before adjusting at the shoes.
only problem become's major is hand adjuster for automatic's and manual mechanicism to shift and move they get cracked easily and break rather easy inside on simple accidents to well firm in car. so over adjusted when installed.
Thanks for the great comments 👍🏻👍🏻🐿
My spring tensioner appears to be seized in the "locked" position i.e. there is no bite in my handbrake at all. How do i free the tensioner? The little holding hook is sticking through the tensioner but is moving freely so the tensioner should pop forward once the hook is lined up with the hole but it isn't. Any ideas?
I think you need a big hammer, seems to work for me😂 on a serious note, are we talking about the adjuster in the hand brake shoes or the pawl on the lever? Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
@@aaanton11 It's the spring thing below the lever that you pull. The hook is sticking through the hole in the plate with the small indent that you put a screwdriver in to push the spring back. I saw it and just thought "Oh that's handy, I'll just move the hook in line with the hole it came out of and it should release the srping and therefore put tension back on the handbrake cable. When i touched the hook, it moves freely so it looks like the spring tensioner is stuck. I've only had the car a few weeks and have had this problem since i got it. The garage i bought it from isn't exactly a main dealer so can't take it back.
Good vid but you missed the service lock under the handbrake lever
You don't need it, but Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠
Oh I thought you did to release the cable tension
So I've followed the vid to the dot and my handbrake is still pants, I've installed new shoes and discs,
The first click seems like its just taking up cable slack ?
16 clicks here🙋🏼♂️
Thats some clicking, 😂 Thanks for the great comments👍🏻👍🏻🛠

@@aaanton11 At 1:25 the sping under the handbrake lever. There is a notch to fit a flathead screwdriver on the end of it. compress the spring back by pushing on it until it locks in position. then adjust rear shoes.
Kevin JC what's the theory behind this? If you compress the spring then surely there's even more slack in the cable?
I need to adjust mine tomorrow.
@@donalsmith Not sure why but its part of the adjusting procedure. here is a link, follow it and you'll be fine. www.pelicanparts.com/BMW/techarticles/BMW-3-Series-E90/BRAKES-Parking_Brake_Adjusting/BRAKES-Parking_Brake_Adjusting.htm
@@donalsmith also if you can avoid placing the stands under the control arms, that would be great. stand location is at jacking points. be aware putting your car in gear so it doesn't roll away wont work as its rwd, chock the front wheels. removing one wheel nut is fine to access the adjusting star inside but you need a long flat head screwdriver and flashlight to see it.
