- London mayor Sadiq Khan accused the Government of “weaponising air pollution” ahead of his expansion of the capital’s ultra-low emission zone (Ulez).
In an interview with the PA news agency, the Labour mayor said he was “disappointed” at the lack of Government support for the policy and its accompanying scrappage scheme.
From Tuesday, the Ulez will be expanded to include the whole of the capital, making it the world’s largest pollution charging area.
People who drive in the zone in a vehicle that does not meet minimum emissions standards are required to pay a £12.50 daily fee or risk a £180 fine, reduced to £90 if paid within 14 days.
TalkTV’s Kevin O’Sullivan is joined by The Sun’s Trevor Kavanagh to discuss Sadiq Khan’s ULEZ expansion.
“They’ve set off the fuse to a really big and explosive confrontation with the general public.”
Some opponents of Ulez expansion claim the policy is aimed at generating money for TfL and criticised the mayor for introducing it during the cost of living crisis.
But Mr Khan said: “I am quite clear in relation to the evidence I have seen that the consequences of air pollution is heartbreaking when you have spent time with a bereaved mum.
“It’s really heartbreaking when you get an in-patients ward and see the consequences of air pollution, but also it is inspiring to see that some of these policies can transform people’s lives.”

I was born in 1948 in London and lived through all the smogs of that time and have no problems with my breathing. Hopefully this tax will destroy the Labour Party at the next election!

My wife is a community nurse with over 30 years experience, she drives to patients to their homes and does over 200 miles a day, if they introduce pay per mile it won’t be worth her doing the job and she will resign.

I'm a volunteer patient driver using my own car to get patients to and from doctors, hospitals, dentists, optometrists, even just shopping due to not having much in the wY of public transport around the south west..... if pay per mile comes in i will have to stop helping people full stop....

It discrimination against people trying to go about their everyday duties or business. We already have pay-per-mile - it's called fuel tax. The more you use, the more you pay.

Once there is 100% EV usage, there'll be no fuel duty income (or ULEZ income).
Pay per mile is just about the only way they can do it. Not happy.
BUT. They can't solely introduce pay per mile ONLY on EVs, as everyone will suddenly want ICE cars again. So they have to introduce a blanket rule.
And they won't increase road tax on EVs, as that'd kill the EV market.

@@fredfred2363 We won't be able to refine enough lithium for at least 50 years to get to even half of cars being EVs, I don't see this ever happening really, it's just not possible - alternative technologies are far more likely to come along.
Lithium pricing is already spiking because they cannot meet demand and ramping this is up is impossible for a bunch of complicated reasons.
But yes, it won't stop the government from double taxing the vast majority of motorists for many decades :(

Did Khan realise that people need their cars to go to work. My son got a 64 plate diesel car, he does shift work. How can he afford to pay £12.50 and some days £25.00 due to shift work. He takes me to hospital to do my cancer treatment. It’s not fair at all. It’s a stressful situation 😢
Non compliance is the answer. If everyone on mass, carried on regardless, ignored the rules, accepted the fines on MASS, then let the courts have the headache of dealing with them, and if they are actually legal.

I was victim of an unprovoked attack many years ago which led to a few years where the only way I could leave the house was in my car. If I wasn't able to use my car I would have had to give up work and stay in my house 24/7. When I hear this in London it makes me panic because I know there are people unable to use public transport for many different reasons.

Put a computer privacy screen on your plates. Cant be noticed at street level by the police but overhead cameras cant read them. Cant do much about mobile cameras unfortunately. As for the blob, or Home Office civil servants, give them all 1 month to do their jobs, as ministers tell them, or resign. They are 96000 overstaffed so there is loads of leeway if thousands do go.
These people doing the protest are doing right, standing on the side of the road out of the way of vehicles and for that they have my respect and support. Unlike those ungrateful people who glue themselves to the roads stopping people from going to work.

Slower cars are statistically more prone to accidents and they are more harmful to the environment on account of their engines not able to cool, and with cars not moving fast enough the warm air they produce isnt being dispursed as it should. Also cars dont burn fuel efficiently when travelling slow, so they cause more harm than good
I have read on many posts people saying just don’t pay if you are fined, trouble is if the politicians get there way with the cashless society you won’t have a choice , the money will just be taken from your account.

This is just typical of Britain today. You’ve had months to demonstrate but the attendance at such demos has been woeful. The majority of Londoners don’t give a toss about this or anything else come to think of it. Everyone has the attitude ‘well it won’t affect me so I don’t care’.
