Great tip for one square city Burry your highway underground. It yields a ton of space, makes it easy for you to put extra ways in and out, and you can make roads run under your city from one end to the other without the traffic stops.
Imagine real life traffic management, where this actually is a thing... At least in The Netherlands we have dynamic numbers of open/closed lanes, variable speed limits depending on time of day, and probably lots of measures I don't even know about!

all those narrow roads coming off should be deleted coming on to the main road anyway (or at least every alternate one). I think Biffa even taught me that early on!
Another suggestion might be to build 4 (FOUR) 1-tile citys in a square and see how this works out. you would have to build a square to max before you can start on the next one. 1 Square with university, 1 square with a zoo, 1 Square with Theme park and 1 square with airport, intercity trainstation and a cargostation. So only 1 of each and you have to pick 1 to start with. If you would start with university you can not build stations or airport in that square. Another thing might be you have to pick a specialty industry in each square. Would love to see a challenge like that. One exception is made. You can import electricity, water and sewage treatments from outside city limits. Have fun. Oh and Happy holidays to Biffa and all his fans. Stay healthy physically and Mental.
A cautionary note regarding timed traffic lights and tram roads: when you use TM:PE's default timed traffic light setup, it gives you four phases where each one is straight ahead and left from one of the four roads leading into the intersection. However, when you have a tram down the middle of one of the roads, the trams going straight and the cars turning left interfere with each other. The solution is to manually set up the timed traffic lights so that you have two phases for through traffic in each direction, and then two phases for each set of left turns. That way the trams and the cars don't get in each other's way.
At around 18:10 you force all cars to turn immediately on the next junction again, basically confining all traffic to is own block and the next, as it cannot enter the through traffic on either side
yeah but it orces people to walk or use transit, taking vehicles off the road. it would be bad if there was industry and the deliveries couldn't be made, but for regular non commercial transit, its still fine as a solution. if the ai was to insist on driving, all it would have to do is get out of its car, cross the street and get back in a car.

What i really love about seeing the one tile city, is that it really highlight the fundamental problem with SimShitty 2013. When you have so little space, every city will become the same, because you have to cram everything together, so it becomes about how you utilize every single square cm the most efficiently. Where as in Cities Skylines you have 9 tiles, which lets you have plenty of space between stuff.
The thing about city builders is the density of it all. With practically unlimited space I feel like there is no incentive to just create car centric urban sprawl of suburbs which i hate in real life so why would i want to make it in a video game
Hey Biffa! Every time I hear you say “round the outside” I think back to the video where you played it 3 times, I was wondering if you could do that in a few more videos, it cracked me up pretty good when I heard it first!

I've seen this 3 days ago! Cool to see the fix. I was surprised with the lack of lane mathematics and 4 way roads. Didn't notice until the end it was a very old video.
Looks like you are effectively losing the inside lane for the roundabouts with tram... because the inside lane is dedicated to turning left, which can never happen since the interior road is tram only
Since I've started watching these videos I've started to notice and pay more attention to Lane mathematics in real roads. It's super interesting to hear what he's saying about lanes being increased or decreased and then remember somewhere I've actually seen this!
Hey Biffa, in the pedestrian roundabout mod you can adjust the elevation of the pedestrian bridges so people don't have to walk up 3 stories of stairs 👍
Biffa invented merry-go-roundabout no one noticed))) You closed all exits from the roundabout, so they must keep turning around. That looks so funny, made me laugh every time)))
It's very interesting to see how you have a big, systematic problem, but the solution involves fixing smaller bits one by one. It's like untying a knot.
Well you put that screwed up cable car just outside the square with the water pumps, but I'm just nit picking, you could probably easily find another location of it, this was a great challenge and you have an eye for detail when it comes to these traffic solutions!
I found a new trick for making the big roads work: If you have three or more lanes going in the same direction, make the middle one(s) faster using TMPE's lane-wise speed limits. That way they only use the left-turn or right-turn lanes if they're turning (or doing deliveries). So for the 8-lane roads you could set the speed limits to 60,70,70,60|60,70,70,60.
Id like to see a 1 square challenge like this: Max population with minimum 90% traffic flow. You fall below 90% you have to fix it before you can increase the population again. Would really test your traffic flow knowledge and force you to use everything you know. Im currently doing this for fun, and rn Im sitting at 48k population with 90-92% traffic flow. I use no traffic mods, but infinite residential demand to get things moving. Pretty sure I hit 50k - 90% flow no problem.
Not that it matters much but when you applied dedicated turning lanes to the last roundabout at 29:00, the innermost lane of the roundabout isn't used anymore because it's now set to left only (onto the tram line), which cars can't do obviously. What I usually do when tram lines meet roundabouts is split the road the tram line is on, bridge the tram line over the roundabout and connect both directions of the road to the roundabout. This way you have a smoother angle for the cars to merge on or off the roundabout (as the road is now split) and the tramline doesn't interfere with roundabout traffic.
4:46 I think the first roundabout is not really needed - it's just connecting one road with a highway in both directions. I guess it's giving cars a way of turning around, in case that's needed (and we see this later when the next intersections on this road go right-turn-only). But even then, having just one lane to turn off into the highway just makes the three-lane roundabout being mostly useless, because almost everyone will use the outer lane. (We later see some cars are going around one-and-a-half time to make it to the exit.) This roundabout should certainly have two lanes exiting, and just one continuing. 6:30 I guess a 8-lane road is not too bad for a road with that many intersections - you get two dedicated turning lanes for each intersection, and two go-ahead lanes in the middle (assuming it is set up correctly). Of course, near the end, it could become smaller to merge into the highway (or you could use the lane arrows to deactivate the superfluous lanes). After making the intersections right-turn-only (which happens later), three lanes are certainly enough, though. 33:35 More people are using the metro in one direction than in the other - that's likely caused by the tram line going only one direction? The metro line in the same direction as the tram is sharing the passenger load with the tram, while in the other direction people can only use the metro (or have to go the whole loop, which they prefer not to do). I bet adding the second tram line should balance out the metro usage too.

it drives me nuts that cars will line up in a single lane for miles instead of utilizing more of the road and then merging closer to the end. Where I'm from, if there's 2 lanes open, you drive down the open lane and cut everyone off at the end. I'm from ... NJ lol
Your roundabouts with tramlines are only using two lanes. The inner lane is going into the crossing tramline. Roadarrow is not going straight but left. Please upvote this
The Hugo-There you did around 18:00 made it so that the road leaving the city is only used by people who want to turn right on to the first road past the roundabout or leave the city completely because they never have an opportunity to change lanes once they exit the roundabout.
Would be good to see a NEW 1 square challenge, with current state Biffa using all the tips and tricks for today’s game - on the same map. We could the see which Biffa was the best old or new!
18:00 this section wound me up far more than it should, because you had the people on the minor roads being forced to take the next left turn after joining the next major one; and stopped any of the cars already on the main road being able to turn off.
So if/when your city breaks past that magic 100k population mark, does your traffic suddenly get crazy? Thanks for all the lessons Biffa. Three weeks in to this silly game and loving it.
You could put the pedestrians under ground, and the tram over the roundabout, to avoid interfering. Or if you are brave, put the pedestrians on ground level, and then switch it up!
Your tram road is essentially only one lane per direction rather than two because one of the two is always a dedicated right turn lane, which is almost useless. The other lane therefore is the only lane going forwards. If you made the right lane into a forwards AND right-turning lane, you'd have 2x the amount of forward-moving capacity.
I would recommend you the mod Improved Public Transport. You can let the game adjust the amount of vehicles based on the budget. Or you add a amount you like to the line. Also you can choose which vehicle to use and how big the distance between the cars should be (unbunching)
You can improve the grid with road hierarchy without losing capacity. You have too many little roads connected to arterial roads. Put roads beside the arterial roads and connect the little roads to them instead, and then connect the arterial roads to the roads beside, but only occasionally. This will improve traffic flow by simply moving the roadspace around into better positions, and you'll therefore not lose space for buildings, either.
haha in Canada at the prison Beavercreek and Fenbrook in Muskoka they are directly beside an airport, I remember just a chain link fence dividing them lol
Biffa idk if you'll ever see this but when you press control shift click on a roundabout to make it a priority junction cars will drive in circles around the roundabout multiple times before picking the road they want to go on and you can see this in the video... that's because they cant lane change so they're forces to drive in circles arround the roundabout multiple times to get in the right lane... removing the no lane switching and or letting the people switch lanes between junctions solve the problem
Biffa, I know how you feel about suggestions... but from what I’ve learned, it would have been great to have a dedicated entrance to the city and have the exit into the highway on the other side so traffic flows “through” the city. Would have been another solution but you handle it best since you give it the Biffa touch :)
Hey Biffa, love the fixes! I remember the one tile episode being one of the first of your videos that I watched. In this episode I don't quite understand why the roundabout you added at 5:00 is better than connecting the lanes to form a "single" road. Is it so that cars can turn around?
I know it's been 7 months but It's not better. Would have been if he connected the round-about to a 3d road, now it's just a roundabout that doesn't go anywhere.
Let me start by saying I love your videos. I don’t play with any mods you are the only RUclipsr I watch that does. However you just said you built the one square city completely vanilla with no mods. Calling bs. Remember the anarchy metro line? That’s a mod sir. Take asipa that 😂😂
8:03 - Classic Biffa... Still hates using bigger than 3 lane roads even though dedicated turning lanes means that the extra lanes will actually get utilized. All this time and you've still got some habits from "vanilla"... Lol
Ring highways/beltways are effective and easy to lay down in single tile cities since the outer boundary is obvious. They have the effect of pulling traffic from the densely packed center to the circumference which has more area.
Great video. Really enjoy your videos. Would love to see a video on what goes into making your videos. Like a behind the scenes video to see your setup and with biffa in it too not just the voice.my image in my head of biffa is of Mr tumble, don't know why though!! Keep up the great work

You could put the pedestrians under ground, and the tram over the roundabout, to avoid interfering.
Or if you are brave, put the pedestrians on ground level, and then switch it up!
Oh cool - you tried the Sim City experience! EA likes this. Bigger is not always better 😂
"flippin' cheese sticks!"... spat out my tea.. lol
Omg I feel the nostalgia :)
Started yesterday this challenge! Looks promising by now, with nearly 4k people in it and positive balance 😊
Gotta love these longer episodes! :D
Doesn't do that for me usually 👍
Great work Biffa. Love these city fixes.
"Flippin cheese sticks!" - Biffa 2020
Let me start by saying I love your videos. I don’t play with any mods you are the only RUclipsr I watch that does. However you just said you built the one square city completely vanilla with no mods. Calling bs. Remember the anarchy metro line? That’s a mod sir. Take asipa that 😂😂
well done!
p.s. blimps could've also used another inverse loop line
I remember the first person plane ride between the IT buildings and terraforming crater lake to contain the dam flooding
Thank you Biffa! Now, get that damn dam into the one square please ;-)
8:03 - Classic Biffa... Still hates using bigger than 3 lane roads even though dedicated turning lanes means that the extra lanes will actually get utilized. All this time and you've still got some habits from "vanilla"... Lol
im sorry that dam is the wrong way around, that city would have no water
Only 6000 people died during the great leap for a better traffic flow. Good job Biffa!
Nope, all back at the end 😉
Hello Biffa I luv your builds and fixes
Ring highways/beltways are effective and easy to lay down in single tile cities since the outer boundary is obvious. They have the effect of pulling traffic from the densely packed center to the circumference which has more area.
Not when there's no room 🤣
@@BiffaPlaysCitiesSkylines Yeah, it's something you need to plan on the outset.
Great video. Really enjoy your videos. Would love to see a video on what goes into making your videos. Like a behind the scenes video to see your setup and with biffa in it too not just the voice.my image in my head of biffa is of Mr tumble, don't know why though!! Keep up the great work
I know it would be extra work in post-production, but a corresponding "jumpy game" sound effect overlay would be great. Maybe a warp drive or a Tesla coil.... 🤔
