As a China-born in Guilin, Guangxi province in 1944, I always visited Hong Kong & Yunnan province with a few others but didn't have a chance like you to see all the beautiful villages. At 77, I do hope that I could do some if I am able to work for my Motherland to do some good contributions. CONGRATULATIONS! from my home in ' The City of Angel ', Bangkok.

Gubei is a fake Watertown, but it is a replica of Wuzhen, a real water town.There are buildings that have been repaired to their original form, or maybe new buildings but here in New York City it doesn't look the same as it did even 40 years ago. That doesn't make New York City " fake" or Disneyland.

Another great video. I visited a really nice and not too busy ancient city in Shandong "Taiérzhuang, Zaozhuang City". I think it was a restored tourist type place but very calm and well presented.

I also take issue with your comment that the Govt's encouragement for visit to Communist historical sights is considered "propaganda". That is indeed a dumbf... remark!

I have visited most of these villages. Even though full of tourists they still convey the charm of old China.

Among the places I have visited, the ones I recommend most are Yunnan, Xi'an, and Guizhou. Although Guizhou is very poor, it is really beautiful.

Definitely there are cars and modern gadgets too. I tried not to include too many of them, to create a 'village feeling' :)
But you are right, in some areas inside these villages cars are not allowed.
