Oh my gosh this is just what I wanted. I’ve had this type of Mochi (got it on Amazon) but didn’t really know what to do with it. Recently I’ve been cutting a block into thirds and I add it to the instant ramen when I add the noodles (my type ramen has to cook 4 minutes). This turns out great and really adds a nice component to the ramen. Thanks for this video!!! my Mochi service grows.
Yeah, I actually learned too that they put blocks of it on a tofu pouch with minced shiitake and some ground chicken meat with seasonings and cooked together with fish cakes in an Oden hot pot, the soup is dashi based, clearly a savory dish.
We make our own maru mochi every year so we never buy kiri mochi. We do eat it sometimes with kinako or as isobeyaki but that is the first time I've seen it with natto! Also yummy variations are butter shoyu mochi (like isobeyaki but with butter) and moffles in a waffle maker (since we don't have a moffuru maker) or we will broil them for our ozoni. Also - Since we make our own mochi sometimes we cut a dried mochi into cubes and fry them in oil for homemade "popped" arare... oishii! Love you both! Thank you for sharing these different ways of preparing kiri mochi!
I'm Hmong and we love mochi too! We use a bread maker to knead the glutinous rice to make big batches. Love it! If you fry it with a little oil then sprinkle it with just a touch of salt after it's crispy and done, it's also really addicting.
J Lee that's a great idea about the bread maker if I want/need to make my own at home! I didn't think I'd be able to get it smooth enough, thanks for the tip 😁
We're shutdown for 3 weeks in Kentucky 😿 so I'm trying Tabieats mochi recipes. So far I'm pretty proud of myself 😺 All the recipes are a success.....thank you 😊
Found a Pack Kiri Mochi with the individual Packed in a Japanese Supermarket here in the City Düsseldorf in Germany and just tryed the isobeyaki. Delicious, a way i never tasted a Mochi, always had the sweet kind.
Oooh thank you so so much, last week I bouht some of them and now I have sooo many options to enjoy them *^* I tried to grill them in the oven right unter the grill, it worked pretty well on the grilling part, but they didn't puff up like yours in the pan so I will try this today ^^
My grandma just brought us a big pack so I'm glad you guys did this video because before I only ate it with the soy sauce! Now I have more recipes to try out!
So interesting! I've never had boiled mochi out of the context of ozoni. My mother used to make kinako mochi for me as a kid. Wow, what a special memory! She also used to serve mochi with butter, shoyu, sugar, and wrapped in nori. I'd love to try natto mochi. I can't wait to try your recipes. I bought my kirimochi today. Thanks so much and wishing you both all the best in 2018!
Great video. My absolute favorite is to daikonoroshi: bite-size pieces of fresh mochi in a bowl of grated daikon and shoyu. Fresh is best in this case because it is so soft. We used to do this with the last batch at our mochitsuki. At the end, we would drop a big bowlfull of freshly grated daikon into the usu, pour in shoyu then drop in the freshly pounded mochi in dumpling sized pieces. The usu would be a giant sized serving bowl from which everyone could help themselves. This would be our lunch for the mochitsuki crew.
thank you for sharing!!! i wanted to make hot zenzai with yakimochi today and i wasn't sure if i can heat the mochi block on stove! これでストーブで餅を焼いても問題ないですね!!!ありがとうございます!
Once we stay in Osaka hotel during new year, they made mocha from the scratch it’s an over night thing, it so good and warm they have different fillings. Geez I miss it
I’m so happy I discovered your channel! I bought some of the packaged mochi from Bokksu Market a while ago because I thought it would be fun to try, but I’ve never prepared them before. Thanks for sharing!😊
Wow learn something new everyday....I like my mochi dissolved in soup, ozoni... have you ever slice it about 1/2 inch thick and dry in the sun. When the liquid is out then you fry it....then you sprinkle furikake and there you have your mochi crunch, arare
So cute and so sweet! That looks really good! I don't think I'm adventurous enough to try the nato mochi, but I'd love to try the anko one. I guess one bean appeals over the other? Thanks for sharing this!
I know it's been a while since yo posted this but thank you so much for making this video! I just fried up my very first block of kirimochi, tried with just a little Yamasa shoyu, after it was flipped half a million times (or so it seems). It was so good! Perfectly toasty on the outside and gooey on the inside. I'm looking forward to making more and glad I bought a one kilo bag. Without your demonstration I probably never would have tried it!
Mochi is one of my favorite foods! Especially the fresh ones my buddhist temple makes on mochitsuki. I love having it melted into my Ozoni on New Years.I can't wait... only 6 more days!!
Love mochi in various preparations. So delicious. I've relocated and there are no markets in current location to buy mochi. Have to drive and get a bunch of stuff soon. Have considered making it myself with the sweet rice flour but couldn't find anko. Those varieties you made look great and will be trying them. Happy New Year!
I usually just toast these under the broiler in the oven then put into miso soup. Def gonna try the nori wrapped one. Going to try to find some kinako powder too
Yea me too, actually this is maybe the first time I saw on this channel, probably because is more work. Anyway the quality content still remain, with or without animations! :D
I might have to try some of these. Normally I get the small peanut shaped mochi and pan grill them, and then put either peanut butter or barbeque sauce on them.
Can you please make a homemade dango recipe (from shiratamako) with different flavours like matcha, sakura or rose water etc? Thank you. 😊 I hope you both have wonderful new year, sending my regards from Australia.
I just end up eating all my mochi grilled! Though now I want some with cheese, because cheese. (There's a restaurant in West Seattle that has grilled mochi with anko on the menu, and it is the BEST.)
Mochi is delicious, I tried to make it today but my rice had to much water... I will try another time The ones we buy at the store are oishii, I can imagine the ones that are home made... hummmm Thank you for your recipes... Ohaio gosaimasu
There is a similar type of snack to kinako(?) mochi in Singapore called Muah Chee which is coated with sugar and grated peanut. It is cut into tiny pieces and eaten with toothpicks. One of my favorite childhood snacks :)
Funny, i have those very cooking chop sticks I bought in Yokohama, or near there anyway. We were looking for the Thai Young Coconuts for my cooking class and there we found a very good organic food shop. In there I got those exact chop sticks.
Ohayogozaimasu Brothers! I just bought 2 large bags of kiri mochi, in preparation of Oshogatsu. Since my mother scared me as a young child-by telling me that children “die” from choking on mochi every year, I have never had Ozoni with mochi in it. I do, however, have isobeyaki mochi on the side. I love all of the styles that you shared! I especially loved brother Satoshi’s excitement when the mochi was puffing up! ☺️ Aside from loving isobeyaki style, I also love kinako. That natto version tho! I will have to try it! Thank you for sharing, because I had no idea that you could grill mochi in a frying pan or boil it in water. I’ve always used a yaki ami on my stovetop. I can’t wait to see your Osechi ryori videos!! I truly hope you’re feeling better brother! ♥️
Mindy's Mom All of the mochi variations looked so delicious, didn't they, sister? I hope you enjoy your New Year's celebration with your family and loved ones. It sounds like it will be an amazing feast! Sending hugs your way. ((((((hugs))))))
Erin Uber..... Sister, YES! As soon as I saw the anko version, I thought of you! ❤️ Now that Christmas has passed, its time to finish grocery shopping for all of the ingredients for our Osechi ryori. This will be the most that have ever visited. Whew! Thank you for the ((hugs)) sister! I certainly need them! ♥️
Mindy's Mom I thought of you, too, my friend. I know you love anko also! I hope everything will go well as you shop for the rest of your ingredients and do the final preparations for your Osechi Ryori. It sounds like it will be a lot of special people coming together at your place. I'm sure they'll love all of the delicious food! They'll also be so glad to be with you, and with each other, at such a wonderful holiday. Hugs continuing. (((((Mindy's Mom)))))
Happy New Year to you both. Enjoyed watch the different ways of eating mochi. I’ve alway just had in Ozoni soup and in shoyu and kinako. Also have eaten it at a Mochisuki with anko in the center. Want to try grilling it and putting anko on top, using chocolate, and boiling it. Usually just grill it on the stove. Thanks for the new ideas. PS I’ll coming over to Japan in April 2019 my first trip since 1970 can you suggest any clubs in the NiChrome area. Thanks.
I thinkmy favorite way of eating mochi is wrapping for filling the mochi with cheese and then dipping it in soy sauce and vinegar and then wrapping it with nori or what we call in korea Gim. It's so satisfying
OMG guys it looks yummy but i have never tasted it and have no idea how it will be like :) :) i will look for sure for a japanese resturant in Egypt to try it ^_^ ♥ loved the video and the history part of the mochi ♥
Outside of Japan: Aeon Mall/Marts Chains have them. I love the blocks of Mochi. They're fast and reliable if I'm at home hungry. I microwave them in a bowl of water using the package instructions. I add my premade Red Bean Paste (Mixed with Black Sesame Seeds to cut the Sweetness) on top and enjoy. :D
Oh Man! I cant wait to try the Isobeyaki version! My boyfriend just made me the Kinako version on new years, he was so excited because he used to eat it as a kid when his grandma made it for him. ^_^ It was delicious! But I am definitely a savory person. I love soy sauce and nori. ;-)
Thanks for the quick mochi making tip. I live in Alaska and its hard to find most of the ingredients for your recipies, but I'm working on it. I'd really lie to try Natto, but even Amazon dosen't seem to have it ;(
I feel like this is a quite helpful video in general - most videos just ask you to put it on top of a gas stove without a pan or into a toaster oven, but most people outside Asia don't have those, so the pan method is definitely good for people who haven't already experimented that. Any Japanese recipes that use this for a the main dish, rather than it just being a snack or a side dish? I know at least some udon dishes have it, but most people can't find udon noodles either, unless they have an Asian store near them. Thanks for the video!
I tried the microwaved mochi with chocolate using two squares of a frozen Ritter Sport Milk Chocolate Bar. That was SO WORTH IT! Very Yummy.
I've never had savoury or unsweetened mochi. They look like delicious little pillows. This is something I must try.
Yeah! In Japan when you say 'mochi' the first things that comes to their minds is the unflavored/plain mochi.
I had no idea people ate mochi as a savory food. it looks so good
Yeah, I actually learned too that they put blocks of it on a tofu pouch with minced shiitake and some ground chicken meat with seasonings and cooked together with fish cakes in an Oden hot pot, the soup is dashi based, clearly a savory dish.
From what I understand savory is more popular than sweet mochi.
this is the original
I put it in a waffle maker and it's gets nice crunchy and toasty. Then put anko on it. I'm going to try your way too!
Thank you for sharing these different ways of preparing kiri mochi!
Kahiau T ooh butter shoyu mochi and using a waffle maker (which I have!) are great suggestions, thank you!
hi! may i know how you dry the mochi to make kirimochi? and how long can you store the dried one? :)
I love that framed quote in the background. It's so true

Found a Pack Kiri Mochi with the individual Packed in a Japanese Supermarket here in the City Düsseldorf in Germany and just tryed the isobeyaki. Delicious, a way i never tasted a Mochi, always had the sweet kind.
Hope you enjoyed it
I love anko and I love mochi!! I need to try kirimochi with anko
Oooh thank you so so much, last week I bouht some of them and now I have sooo many options to enjoy them *^* I tried to grill them in the oven right unter the grill, it worked pretty well on the grilling part, but they didn't puff up like yours in the pan so I will try this today ^^
I've always wondered how to eat those things after seeing them in the shops. Thanks, guys!
just learned to eat mochi lately and your video is fantastic on how easy to make other variations
My grandma just brought us a big pack so I'm glad you guys did this video because before I only ate it with the soy sauce! Now I have more recipes to try out!
Where do we purchase
I would love to see a more in-depth video on homemade mochi and how to handle it differently compared to this block stuff! ♥️
I'm making this tonight. Thanks for your help.
Thank you for sharing. I like trying and making new foods.
I just bought a bag of of blocks! And Nato! Thank you for this!!!
GUYS THIS IS AWESOME,! My local asian market sells this block style mochi amd i never knew how to prepare it!! I will definitley try this out!!
I really like watching you and Mikey Chin videos. I hope you guys make each other happy for a long long time
Great video. My absolute favorite is to daikonoroshi: bite-size pieces of fresh mochi in a bowl of grated daikon and shoyu. Fresh is best in this case because it is so soft. We used to do this with the last batch at our mochitsuki. Agree, fresh mochi, daikonoroshi & shoyu is good. But I prefer adding natto to the mixture you explained.
Sounds delicious!
thank you for sharing!!! i wanted to make hot zenzai with yakimochi today and i wasn't sure if i can heat the mochi block on stove! これでストーブで餅を焼いても問題ないですね!!!ありがとうございます!
Thank you guys! I also wondered about how to mke use of them as well! couldn't stop salivating as I watched 😆😆
Once we stay in Osaka hotel during new year, they made mocha from the scratch it’s an over night thing, it so good and warm they have different fillings. Geez I miss it
Fantastisch! I will try out the chocolate type for sure! Keep on posting, because I enjoy looking TabiEats.美味しそう! 😋

I’m so happy I discovered your channel! I bought some of the packaged mochi from Bokksu Market a while ago because I thought it would be fun to try, but I’ve never prepared them before. Thanks for sharing!😊
I tried Anko mochi tonight and I fell in love with it!!
Wow learn something new everyday....I like my mochi dissolved in soup, ozoni... have you ever slice it about 1/2 inch thick and dry in the sun. When the liquid is out then you fry it....then you sprinkle furikake and there you have your mochi crunch, arare
I'm loving that Christmas tree :) Thanks for a fun video
So cute and so sweet! That looks really good! I don't think I'm adventurous enough to try the nato mochi, but I'd love to try the anko one. I guess one bean appeals over the other? Thanks for sharing this!

Can't wait to try the natto mochi--I think that would be my favorite too! Thanks for sharing this!
I hope you liked the natto mochi!
Sushi Sandwiches are gaining popularity with home cooks. I think mochi has competition. Cool video. Happy Holidays :)

Sure!
I've had Mochi before and it was so good, even with Anko!!
I just end up eating all my mochi grilled! Though now I want some with cheese, because cheese. (There's a restaurant in West Seattle that has grilled mochi with anko on the menu, and it is the BEST.)
Mashiko! It's not always on the menu, so you can call in advance and check too! (The grilled mochi is pretty standard, the anko not so much.)
I'm from Hong Kong, and I bought this mochi. IM SO LUCKY

I tried making isobeyaki today, tastes kinda like melted cheese. So good.
I'll have to look around for kinako powder and anko, to try with those too.
Best snack!
There is a similar type of snack to kinako(?) mochi in Singapore called Muah Chee which is coated with sugar and grated peanut. It is cut into tiny pieces and eaten with toothpicks. One of my favorite childhood snacks :)
I hope I can find that mochi at the supermarket. I want to put it in nabe and try those recipes during new year 😄
Lovely. Thank you. Will be trying these recipes!
Funny, i have those very cooking chop sticks I bought in Yokohama, or near there anyway. We were looking for the Thai Young Coconuts for my cooking class and there we found a very good organic food shop. In there I got those exact chop sticks.
磯辺焼きを食べた事ないですけど美味しそう!私はきな粉を付けた餅が一番好きです。
磯辺焼き、美味しいですよ。ぜひ試してみてください。ありがとうございます。
Ohayogozaimasu Brothers! I just bought 2 large bags of kiri mochi, in preparation of Oshogatsu. Hey friend! It so good to see you again! We miss you guys!!!
Its chewy and it tastes like very sweet rice
This video made me crave mochi. I had to made mochi with red bean soup after watching this.
おいしそう!作り痛いです。ありがとうございました。I have these rice blocks at home from the local Japanese market, now I know some nice ways to eat it :D
Oh Man! I cant wait to try the Isobeyaki version! My boyfriend just made me the Kinako version on new years, he was so excited because he used to eat it as a kid when his grandma made it for him. ^_^ It was delicious! But I am definitely a savory person. I love soy sauce and nori. ;-)
I made the soy sauce one and it's so good and made a simple sweet one by just dipping it into sweetened condensed milk and it's also delicious
I love mochi but it's hard to get kirimochi here :(
do u know if it's possible to make from glutinous rice flour?
Thanks!! Love your vids!
I love nori! I need an easy way to make the anko paste
I will have to get some Mochi online or make it from scratch...Id love to try these
Thanks for the quick mochi making tip. I live in Alaska and its hard to find most of the ingredients for your recipies, but I'm working on it. I'd really lie to try Natto, but even Amazon dosen't seem to have it ;(

Red bean Mochi probably is my favorite .
So good mochi!!!! Topped off with azuki!!!! 😍
