Family business can be both a blessing and a curse. You will always have the stability and don’t ever have to think how to make ends meet. At the same time, if you have a gift that goes outside the realms of the family business (specially being from a japanese family) and one wishes to pursue that aspiration then a lot of drama will ensue.
Well you don't necessarily have stability - you have to change with the times or die like the businesses around your's did. Change too much and too fast and people complain, you always have to thread that needle. However in Japan businesses have been handed down outside the family, like in the bladesmithing business. Technically the new person is 'adapted' and becomes the next generation owner. But yeah, no freedom to be you.

If you live anywhere near Los Angeles, you really owe it to yourself to go out there and try it. Everything they make is fantastic, but their chocolate ganache mochi is seriously one of the greatest things I've ever eaten. I actually was in the middle of eating one of those when I came across this video. And obviously not that I'd tell anyone how to live their life, but I do hope Korey decides to take over the family business when/if Brian decides to retire.

This shop really works hard. At our church we make New Year mochi every December 28. Three days before New Years Eve. We only make about 700 lbs. but it takes us from 3:00 am till 11:00 am to finish all the rice. This shop goes every day! The mochi taste different from the factory made ones simply because it is made by hand. Like mom's cooking versus one that comes from a can.

Came across this old video, so it would be 119 years in 2023. And...I have a box of mochi right here in front of me...well...what's left of them. I got a box of 20 mochi's and I have 2 left, couldn't wait for New Year. Probably the most well-known mochi confectionery in LA.
I’m proud of mochi business thriving abroad. So glad that it will be passed on to his son and still continue. Protecting and passing on tradition is very important. I’m disappointed that not only is many confectionary incorporating automation and less hand involved but mochi are made out of geletifier and fillers and some even uses artificial sweetener because it keeps mochi from getting hard. But mochi need to be hard and the toasted mochi is also divine. Keep up the great work! But, could you please make non “artificial”colorant mochi?
I hope they get to pass it down more and more generations, even if it's not from their own family, I for one would love to help the shop grow, it's just so impressive and my heart will shatter if it ever ends.
I order at least once per month, Rainbow dango and I’ll order 6 or 7 packs along with some rice cakes. It costs about $60 for shipping but it’s completely worth it! I live in Fresno County and it costs more to ship than what I purchase. That’s how much I love it!

Came across this old video, so it would be 119 years in 2023. And...I have a box of mochi right here in front of me...well...what's left of them. I got a box of 20 mochi's and I have 2 left, couldn't wait for New Year. Probably the most well-known mochi confectionery in LA.
I hope this business is still standing even during covid

Protecting and passing on tradition is very important.
I’m disappointed that not only is many confectionary incorporating automation and less hand involved but mochi are made out of geletifier and fillers and some even uses artificial sweetener because it keeps mochi from getting hard. But mochi need to be hard and the toasted mochi is also divine. Keep up the great work! But, could you please make non “artificial”colorant mochi?

I order at least once per month, Rainbow dango and I’ll order 6 or 7 packs along with some rice cakes. It costs about $60 for shipping but it’s completely worth it! I live in Fresno County and it costs more to ship than what I purchase. That’s how much I love it!
