  • Chris Wilson the Lead Developer of Grinding Gear Games joined the cast to have a frank discussion about the current state of Path of Exile, the failings of 3.15, what players should expect from 3.16 / 3.17 and ultimately PoE2. This was a really important conversation to have so massive thanks to everyone involved!

      Poe used to be u build all dmg n life then as you get gear u could drop dmg to get defences... But when stuff like sirius dom mods basically tell you you need wayyyy more dmg nothing can be wasted elsewhere, kinda lame. Plus ms skills not having i frame for stuff is like ok take away 75% of player skill mattering, not to mention Sirius beams special hinder n other cheese crap like doors.... Take away the doors now that we don't have flasks and dodge... Doors were absolutely garbage cheese mechanic n they removed our anti cheese tech. Last they need to stop stacking rng i'm tired of the only choice i get in the game is get fkd by 3 rng or 5 rng who cares rng is all just the same damn casino gimmick like cmon.

Right now it's just lots of talking and damage control by a guy who sees the bottom line being eroded by the changes they've made to the game. Just wanted to say that as a long time player of the game, I'm VERY appreciative of this episode of Baeclast. I feel like this did a lot for trying to bridge some of the miscommunication between GGG and the community. When CW said "we've been afraid to talk about some of these things with the community" at the beginning, that made me more sad than even some of the nerfs I disagreed with. Largely because the communication between GGG and the community is one of the strongest and most defining pillars of PoE imo. Here's to hoping this is going back to roots (for lack of a better phrase) on that and regaining the much loved and desired open dialogue between the company and the community.

    • @Lubet0TheGreat

      @Lubet0TheGreat 2 года назад +6

      @@thesunryze4658 I expressed my observations for the last 1.5 years. The community's voices fell on deaf ears. I remember back in the day, GGG released 1 month challenge league only for SC, there was a community outrage and the devs worked extra hard 2 more days and released equivalent league also for HC, now that's the company I fell in love with. Now there is a 500 pages thread about harvest and 95% of the people are against nuking it, they did it anyway, the same with trading, the same with item pollution, rare items are worthless, 0 chase item from endgame bosses, random one shots, QoL changes people want like not clicking on 321321321 different orbs and currencies, have you seen the game without item filter, it's out of control. And yet they don't address any of those problems. Players deal too much damage? GGG's response: nerf every support gem. Problem solved in their eyes, but the 100s of non-meta builds who did enough damage before but now are worthless are the collateral damage. The same think with harvest, by nerfing it they killed so many non-meta builds who can't function without the mechanic. It's killing a fly with rocket launcher every time. Also the performance problems are out of control, the chinese censorship is everywhere, textures aren't loading what league now, isn't that more serious problem than switching Headsman with Bane of legends and visa versa.

      @@thesunryze4658 And you're the type of person that for some reason values words more than actions. This interview is usual protocol for GGG's damage control. Same with all the manifestos lately. I'll personally reserve my judgement until they ACTUALLY do something.

    • @thesunryze4658
      @thesunryze4658 2 года назад +12

      @@Lubet0TheGreat Well, I mean, what you're saying is half true half wrong. Players point out issues, but give bad solutions. GGG aknowledge these issues (like Chris did in this video) but explain that they are trying to find the best solution to fix it. It's not the game we used to know, it's way more complex, and therefore problem solving has also became way more complex, especialy if now they have game longevity in mind.
      "95% of the people are against nuking it" first, random statistic. second, false statistic, polls have been made on reddit with around 50/50 agreement, and that's the most reliable statistic we have, which isn't reliable at all.
      "rare items are worthless" they've been working on that since Heist, Chris said during this video that they are STILL working on that.
      "0 chase item from endgame bosses" Chris said new league should have very good uniques, and if it doesn't it's a fail because that's one of their big goals for this one league.
      "random one shots" adressed in the video, working on it.
      "QoL changes people want like not clicking on 321321321 different orbs and currencies" shards now drop in stack more often, flask changes were motivated by this (but it's a fail, he aknowledged that), they say they are working on pickup range etc... so, adressed in the video.
      "have you seen the game without item filter, it's out of control" he adressed that in the video as well. They are working on it.
      I mean, can you understand that it takes time to implement proper solutions which will not hurt the game in the long run / will be pointless after 2 more leagues ?
      I better have them take 5 to 10 leagues to fix something properly once it's been brought up by the community, than 1 league to get a shitty fix and call it a day.
      Let's continue
      "Players deal too much damage? GGG's response: nerf every support gem. Problem solved in their eyes, but the 100s of non-meta builds who did enough damage before but now are worthless are the collateral damage" He said they are looking into that, they're not happy with it, and therefore claiming "problem solved in their eyes" is a straight up lie.
      "the chinese censorship is everywhere" wtf ? he said they have 0 implication with the development of the game. Please, give an example.
      "isn't that more serious problem than switching Headsman with Bane of legends and visa versa." Different teams working on different issues, and switching 2 nodes take a few minutes, fixing engine related issues or whatever big scale issue require dozens of hours of team effort, and more.
      Should be clear that you're talking complete bullshit now. It's fine having concerns, I do as well, but if you can't understand game development in general, just don't talk about the topic and simply say you're unhappy instead of making false accusations. You're having unrealistic expectations.

Being open to discussing new developments in the next league before the marketing has went out is great (when necessary), of course he didn't want to spoil everything, but discussing the flask changes and whatever else is great.
    Honestly more of this kind of thing happening would be a godsend, not having a prepared list and having a discussion with a more informal/personal tone where it's Chris talking, not PR, is great as it lets us get an idea on what he *actually* thinks. The only part of the podcast i just couldnt understand is chris' stance on deterministic drops from bosses / chase items. How is it more fun for a rhoa to drop a super rare armor piece than the boss thats actually wearing it? How can we chase for chase items if there are fewer and fewer places to chase said item? Nobody wants to play 200+maps with the goal in mind to get a brass dome for example

    • @toukoenriaze9870
      @toukoenriaze9870 2 года назад +20

      Ye it's called a chase item for a reason ... U have to be able to chase it ... It shouldn't just be a random drop that drops everywhere ... There should be 1 2 maybe 3 big places to farm it at worst and it should be target farmable in those places

    • @Chaooo
      @Chaooo 2 года назад +12

      Because there is a disparity between the definition of a chase item. Ideally, a chase item is one of ridiculous power that can be seen as a target goal over very long play - HH, Hateforge, Repl. Shako, etc. But to many others, a chase item is a target-farmable drop that serves to be a hefty upgrade - Starforge (haha sike), Atziri's Disfavour (haha sike x2), Soul Ripper, etc.
      In my opinion, the latter should be the main dish of Path of Exile. That style of loot pooling where you target-farm that item you so desperately want is what made Borderlands 2 so extremely successful, and is why Borderlands 3 initially flopped until they later made the shift back to the BL2 style of loot. It hones your focus and gives you a linear goal, and linear doesn't always mean easy. That's what I think.
      Further, I think there should be a bunch of chase items as well, as long as they remain absurdly, *exceedingly* rare to drop. When you have a bunch of leagues or characters where you perform badly or as dissatisfied with your own performance, it's great to have the game say "here man, have some fun for a chance."

    Something helpful in helping GGG represent the build diversity they're seeing in their data would be expanding the PoE Ladder so that maybe users down to level 90 or 80 can be seen.

      To 90 at most. Showing build that can't get to 90 doesn't really make sense since you can get to 85 at least with basically anything through sheer determination no matter how viable it is. Build diversity doesn't mean there's ten working builds and 100 builds that can't do anything.

    • @lollyblizowo4343

      @@Draugo "through sheer determination" and _time_
      I'm sure I'm not the only player who likes playing the trade league because it's interesting and fun, but also works a 9-5 and only has a few hours to play on the weekends. I'm really very happy when I get a character to level 80 before a league ends! I, and many other players, just don't have a lot of free time to throw at the game. And that doesn't mean we're bad players, or that our opinions have no value, it just means we are forced to approach the mechanics differently than they seem to be intended. A lot of end-game atlas progression relies on a pretty heavy time investment; I've literally never gotten to shaper in a league because I don't have enough time over weekends to get that far before the 3 months run out. I think it would in fact be valuable to show, yes, level 90 characters, but also some sort of broad spectrum analysis of characters closer to 80, because there's many of us who just don't have the time to spend on leveling that far.

    • @Draugo
      @Draugo 2 года назад +1

      @@lollyblizowo4343 This is not meant as dissing your comment, but as someone whose been playing since closed beta I can say that the time component is heavily influenced by the build. With better builds getting to lvl 90 and decent way into maps takes maybe around 24 hours even if you're playing slow and in SSF. For a three month league there's plenty of time even if you're playing couple of hours during weekends. The experience when playing with a viable vs non viable build is like two different games.
      I'm not against playing the way you want with the build you want, but when GGG is saying they're "increasing the build diversity" they are either lying or accounting for even randomly generated builds that won't work.

      @@Draugo thank you for being so kind, and you're right of course; I do better when I'm following a build guide than when I'm dicking around trying to make flicker strike work on a 10c budget lol
      But like. I'm the farthest I've ever gotten within a league right now, and I'm playing ziz's exploding srs because I'm used to how srs works, and I've still only barely dropped one tier 3 map. I haven't even run it yet because quite frankly I don't think I'd be able to beat the boss at this point. I haven't managed to get my hands on the last few pieces of gear I was supposed to have by this level, mostly because trade has been _wack_ this league and I can't seem to get anyone's attention. That's kind of been a good thing, honestly, cus it means I'm having to figure out div cards so I can try to get the items myself, but it's slowed me down even more than I usually am, and this is the furthest I've ever gotten. Part of it is my own inexperience, hands down. I have played since just before Breach, but when I started I was 100% piggybacking off a friend, and I took a break for about a year and a half after breach; I remember playing Delve when it released. Which means I only really have a couple years at most of playing the game ~for realsies~ and the consequence of that is that to a degree I still don't know that campaign all that well, simply because I haven't run it enough, and that just inflates my time problem even more.
      Summoners are a fairly slow breed of build, and tend to need a couple specific items to really get going in the endgame, I know that, so my choice was probably poor and I probably should have stuck to, idk, maybe that seismic/exsanguinate trapper everyone's talking about. But I dont think that means the srs isn't viable, necessarily; it just takes more investment than I seem to be able to give. And I think it could help ggg to have this sort of thing on the ladder too, because by limiting themselves to such a high level of character they _only_ see the Most viable, Most played builds, and build diversity _is_ garbage right now, and they might actually finally stop nerfing the little skills if they saw that 'Oh look they work but they work slowly and require babying. Huh.'
      Idk mate, I'll be completely honest with you the best build i ever made was a bleed cyclone back in Legion, and, more than anything, I'm dissapointed about the nerfs to defence that made that kind of build Very Stupid, Very Rippy. Like I know, I'm sure I could get to endgame if I watched a few videos and picked up a pob for sst. I don't really want to though. That feels like giving up. Learn the skill ggg wants you to play, and play as intended. But I like srs, and I like cyclone, and I'm not kidding about the flicker strike I've never quite gotten off the ground. And in the end I'm not too upset that I can't ever seem to get to proper endgame, because I can mostly only blame myself. On the game's side it all comes down to the depressing lack of build diversity, there Just Aren't enough skills that work well enough to make it to endgame. And on mine it's a time thing. Maybe one of these days when I finally get that degree I've been making googly eyes at, I'll get a job that let's me have real weekends instead of just Sunday. My experiences are not even close to universal, and I know that, but I still like. Want to feel heard. Idk this turned into a mini-rant somewhere, I shouldn't be writing youtube comment essays before I've had coffee in the morning, Clearly. Thank you for responding to my original comment, I really appreciate getting a chance to see where you're coming from and actually discuss the situation as it's happening, it's nice to talk to someone who's been playing for so long and really knows how the system works.

I rarely play super fast builds, so rather than trying to tag as many monsters as possible in a legion (which is how I think it should be), I instead run around looking for the specific monsters with symbols about them, because that is just better drops overall.

How a 1c common unique sword that drops in lvl 51 zone better than super rare sword that drops from end game boss with phases who to face you need to defeat his 4 guardians in T16 maps and combine their fragments. It's beyond idiotic.

    • @thesunryze4658
      @thesunryze4658 2 года назад +4

      @@Lubet0TheGreat you're really typing nonsense under every comment. Starforge is the only one that got hit too hard and even there, you're wrong saying terminus Est is strictly better. Terminus Est is great for entry level, cheap crit builds, but Starforge can be vastly superior AND also works with non crit builds. Items like voidforge or atziri's disfavour are no longer BiS, but they are still really strong. In case you don't know, even after the nerfs, lots of people on the ladder were using Atziri's disfavour instead of crafted rares because it costs much less, and is plenty enough to shit on the game.
      It's pretty clear you're hating on the game and looking at it through a completely deforming lens. I agree on the topic of needing more chase uniques, but old chase uniques aren't irrelevant, they just aren't BiS anymore.

    • @darkevilazn
      @darkevilazn 2 года назад

      @@thesunryze4658 A chase item is literally that- An endgame item that is rare (rare being low drop chance), and is BIS. Being a viable and "decent" endgame item unique that drops often doesn't make it chase. If fact, that is why the old chase items aren't even "chase" items anymore. Quite the opposite really. They have become common uniques now. So in this case, that guy was right. There are basically only a few "chase" uniques left in the game. And that's not only due to nerfs to the chase uniques, but just from the power creep crafting and drop buffs as well. In your example. Atziri's disfavour is literally not a chase item.

    • @thesunryze4658
      @thesunryze4658 2 года назад

      @@darkevilazn Well according to your logic, if to be a chase item it had to be BiS, that means starforge and Atziri's disfavour have NEVER been chase items. I refered to them has being BiS in the past because it was the only realistic BiS item for "non mirror tier crafters" players, but Insane rares have always been better than those 2.
      That alone makes your logic falls apart..
      There's more nuance than that to the concept of chase items. Atziri's Disfavour was considered chase item because it was the strongest option for its cost range (by cost I mean either straight up currency cost, or time to farm it), same for Starforge.
      Also you're completely missing another point : an Item being build enabler can make said item a chase item. In that case we're not talking about raw power. A good example would be Inpulsa when it used to be hard to drop. It was considered a chase item, and never have been BiS, it just enables a specific playstyle.
      PS : Also, first comment was mainly motivated because he claimed Terminus Est is 100% better than Starforge, which is wrong. I've seen this dude in many comment sections recently and he keeps speaking complete lies and bullshit. Strangely, he seems to never answer to me when I call him out, this is why I answered in the first place. I'm ofc not against people sharing their thoughts but this guy has been amplifying every little annoying thing, or just making straight up lies because he has to find a reason to be as mad as he is.

    This discussion is really good.
    It shows what is the currently biggest problem with the game: the people with the greatest visibility in the community (the streamers) are too opinative!
    The streamers are not game developers! They have no clue on how to create a balanced game that is not stagnant...

      @@cnaisbitt5013 Yeah, I would say it is all related to economy which is destroyed due to lack of people. If someone is days away from quitting the league they likely won’t engage in trading as frequently, hence you get a situation where you ping 20 people without a reply.

    I seldom leave my commentaries in any type of videos, wether I feel positive or negative towards the discussed topics.
    But this time, I feel like I have to.
    Thank you guys for this thourough and transparent interview.
    You guys did you best, I have no doubts, and you went further and beyond to ask questions about topics that do not interfere with your own PoE experience, for the greater good of the community (even if a major part of the community shits on you personally and the game in general).
    Chris was a beast, and my respect for him and GGG as an organisation grew even more.
    I'm not enjoying this league AS MUCH as I enjoyed some previous ones, but I still login and play, because let's face it, there's really no competition for PoE atm, and it doesn't give me the right to slander everyone that enjoys and defends the game. It's how I was raised, respect is paramount.
    It's refreshing to see such a candid posture by Chris, admiting errors (that we ALL make), taking notes and promising discussions with the dev team regarding many issues present in the game.
    All in all, it was quite refreshing, and well done to everyone involved!
    Thank you Tarke, Octavian, Nugi, Raiz and Ziggy. Thank you GGG and in particular Chris.
    Hoping for a better future, both in-game and outside of it.
    Keep going strong, the silent supporters are still here, even if we don't make our voices hear as much as the vocal critics.
    EDIT: If everyone was so critic with themselves like they are towards others, the world would be a much better place

    Thank you Baeclast and Chris Wilson for making this happen; this is the kind of discourse gaming communities should be having. This is leadership. This is the kind of communication that keeps games alive and thriving, now and in the future. Chris disclosed a LOT of information in this that no regular company would. The transparency is really great to see, and really is appreciated. Thank you all for your time and energy.
    edit: I wanted to mention: typical companies have god awful PR, and literally do not communicate ANYTHING at all, or just defend their philosophies and are literally working against their playerbases (WoW, I come from there, I get it), whereas here we have a coming together of content creators and the literal big boy of a company talking about the game, and certain things about company policy, workflow, and even some financial data.
    I ask you, fellow PoE'ers: what other company does what they just did today?

    Regardless if you agree with the direction the game is headed in, Chris deserves some serious recognition for what he does in this interview. I have never seen an active developer of a game go out of their way this much to ensure that there is clear communication with the community of their game. Meeting all of the current chaos and outrage head on and addressing it directly is not only admirable but also takes some serious fortitude. The same goes for the Baeclast cast, being the ones that have to try and do a well enough job of interviewing to satiate the entire community is not easy and should be recognized. You guys did a great job, nice work.

    • @DayOfCasual
      @DayOfCasual 2 года назад

      It's a chase item, because you can see it out there and "chase" towards after it.
      If the chase is just farming enough to be able to liquidate stuff and then buy that chase item, where was the chase?

    • @WingsofAges
      @WingsofAges 2 года назад

      @@DayOfCasual I think the only way we can have that in practice is for soulbound items. Let's just take the example of somebody who just found a chase item; what are you going to do WITH that chase item? It seems natural that you would want to get another copy so you can sell it, because it's a chase item- thus valuable. This ends up with the chase items naturally becoming more common, and with the increase in supply, the price drops to the point where it's more efficient to buy the item than to farm it.
      I'm not exactly advocating for soulbound items (I would need to really think through it more); I'm just pointing out the difficulty in having items that are both chase and tradeable.
