- This super-fast f0.95 50mm from 7 Artisans is truly a blur monster - if you love background blur, you'll love this lens!
It's the fastest lens I've ever shot. It's sharp wide open, it's got great contrast and colour and the background blur it makes is simply stunning! It's very nicely made and for those looking for blur on budget, there are few better choices than this one.
I was sent this lens to test by the people at 7 Artisans and I couldn't wait to go out and shoot it!
Check out the video to see how I got on!

A few weeks ago i got the chance to use the 0.95 noctilux in paris with my dad, and i relate heavily to your statement about making everything blurry. My dad actually decided he wanted the old 50mm f1 noctilux for himself! Crazy pieces of engineering...
There's no shortage of the blurry stuff with this one, no doubt about it!
Excellent video, nice appraisal, thank you. I just picked one up..............
That looks an ideal lens for real low light photography too, Nigel. I'm thinking Jazz clubs, Pub rock venues and the like. It's on my list for Santa, I've just got to be a good boy between now and then, Lol.
Great episode as usual.
George
Thanks George, I hope your wish is granted!
The focus ring turns about a quarter of a circle. That is 90° (not 45°). The lens is also delivered with a rubber grip (called "wrench"), you can glue onto the focus ring. Nice, but probably will fall off after some years of use.
I just got my copy of this lens and it is much easier to focus than my kamlan 50mm f1.1. This lens is great! Thanks for the fun review!
P.S...please post your name over the first shot of you in each episode so we know whom to address in our comments.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice video, and what a great lens. I have the 7artisans 50mm f1.1 Leica M-mount Fullframe version, and I use it on my A7ii with an adapter. I heard the 75mm f/1.25 is even better.
I'd certainly like to try a full frame version!
Lovely results. The Chinese companies are doing some interesting lenses. And maybe even bucking the trend.
Thank you so much for this,
Indeed - there are lots of interesting manual focus lenses coming out of China just now.
Oh nice! I'm going to have to put this on my wish list.
It's a great little lens - I hope you get your wish.
This lens is a favorite of mine even having owned the Leica Nocti, this one just seems to do what I need. If you haven't tried it, the TTartisans 75mm F1.25 is a great lens too.....your Sony will enjoy that lens!
I should very much like to try it!
Thanks 💌
Beautiful video... simply love the way you clicked the pics... ❤️
Do make a video on correct focussing techniques and tips for getting the most out of manual lenses..
Thanks, glad you enjoyed the images!
I've only just found your channel today and already watched quite a few of you videos.
I have an X-T3 and still the X-E1 both of which I really enjoy using.
I also have an embarrassing amount of vintage lenses. I started buying them many years ago when digital was coming in and everyone was ditching their film gear. I just couldn't help myself as I've been able to buy incredible stuff at crazily cheap prices from auctions, charity shops, car boot sales and classifieds.
However I've never used any of my old lenses on full frame which will now be my next purchase. I've been thinking about a second hand Sony A7II.
Anyway I really just want to say how much I have enjoyed your videos so far.
Your calm, measured and informed presentation is a joy to watch.
Thanks.
Many thanks, very glad you're enjoying the videos! I don't think you'll go too far wrong with an a7ii and some vintage lenses - enjoy!
Looks to me like a lens to explore blurr but also colors, because I've the feeling that it lacks a bit of character... but I really like the pop colors and pronounced blurr.... thank you for let us know such a lens. I wonder if the TTartisans 1,2 (not 7artisans), is not a better lens. did you try it ?
I haven't tried the 1.2 for aps-c - however the 50mm f1.2 full frame is very nice!
I was waiting for this review. Thank you
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I appreciate your nice photo examples. That is what really gives your channel a value and of course your narration style.
Many thanks, very glad you're enjoying the channel!
Great review. Thanks for the video!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
I think the markings are not painted on but laser etched. I'm waiting for my first ttartisans lens to arrive today so will have a look and feed back. Love your work Zen Man! :-)
Laser etching is nice, but engraved would be nicer!
Lovely clicks!! You are a really great and excellent photographer. Nailing focus at 0.95 with a non IBIS camera is very challenging, but these clicks are tack sharp. Beautiful colours as well!
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
This comment is very useful as well as being complementary. 💌
I picked up the 35mm 0.95 a while back, which I assume is quite a bit like this. It's solidly built (though I would have preferred a clicked aperture, like TTartisan lenses have), and the image quality is perfectly decent. Decently sharp, and much less fringing than on my 55mm 7Artisan and 50mm TTartisan. I do think contrast is a little bit lacking wide open though, so I usually stop it down a little, light and subject permitting. I also like shooting in Velvia.
It's a great little lens - enjoy!
As always: Thumbs up / Ulf
As always, many thanks! Very glad you're enjoying the videos!
I have the TT Artisans 50 f 1.2, and I love it, is this one of the other Chinese fast fifties you refer to? I can see more blur here than on my f1.2, curious to see more about how this lens compares to the others.
Thanks for all you do!
The main difference is likely to be in the amount of blur generated - this one gives epic amounts!
TTArtisan has a 50mm F0.95 Full Frame

Would love to see a review.
The TTartisan Is better than the 7artisans 50mm.. sharper, better contrast, rendering, vignetting, CA, and that 1/3 of a stop won't make much of a difference, especially when you take into account how soft the 7artisans is at 0.95
📸 Thank you for sharing Nigel! Did you use an nd filter or electronic shutter in these samples?
Either would work fine, though I used the high speeds of the electronic shutter for these shots.
Hi there, did you find the lens loosen up over some time? I have had mine for 2 weeks and its gotten wobbly. The mount sits firmly against the camera but from the focus ring to the front the whole thing is loose which makes focusing precisely difficult and simply annoys me because it’s still a „new” lens. I am considering sending it back if it is not only mine but it would be a shame since I really like it with its giant front element and amazing blur 🙃
Thanks in advance for your reply!
My copy hasn't developed any faults - if yours is faulty I think you should return it for a replacement - seems a shame not to!
@@zenography7923 Thank you very much!
An effective 1.5 on my old Canon? Oh yes. That'd be very welcome indeed!
I guess it would!
7Artisans OR TTartisans ? Your advice ? Thank you
It's difficult to say - I think I slightly prefer the character of the TTArtisans blur, but the 7 Artisans might just have the edge in colour? A very close call though!
Is there a micro 4/3 mount? How close does it focus? I am thinking pseudo-macro 100mm on micro 4/3.
Close focus distance is 45cm - not sure it comes in m43 mount though.
@@zenography7923 Thanks💌
Very interesting lens. The fastest lenses I've ever owned were F1.4. I'd love to try one sometime. Not sure I have anything currently they would work on as all my cameras are DSLRs except for my Olympus OM-D.
I'm not sure this is available in m43 mount, unfortunately!
7artisans 50mm F0.95 fits all mirrorless bodies including M4/3. You can get it directly from China sellers at US$ 180ish or from BH etc for slightly north of 230.
Did you find the need of an nd filter when shooting outdoors?
No, I kept the ISO very low and shot wide open most of the time - I was lucky in that the light wasn't too bright when I shot it. With an aperture this wide though, there will of course be occasions when an nd filter is needed when shooting outside in bright light.
Can't beat a good bit of blur 👍
Indeed you can't!
Not available in Pentax K Mount, I believe?
I don't think so, unfortunately!
This is the first positive review about this lens man. All of em saying super soft wide open. Thanks for the review. Just ordered one to actually see for myself. Trying to replace my fuji 50f1 with this until they release the fuji 56mk2.
It's a little softer wide open for sure, but not super soft by a long way! For f0.95, I found it quite sharp!
Both Fuji's are league above this lens.Do not expect sharpness and contrast of the Fujinon's, but for the money is a nice lens.
@@eagleeyephoto8715 that’s given. Just looking to see if it can perform close to the 7artisans 35 0.95 them I’m sold. It’s just that I’ve seen reviews that it’s so bad compared to the earlier 35mm 095 version.
@@Walkdthock The review depend from what reviewer expect. If someone expect Ultra sharp, detailed ,sterile image from corner to corner at f 0.95 for 250$ then hi should look somewhere else, and that is completely different ball park ,Even 11 grand Leica Noct is not in that park and Nikon Noct is touching it ,but we all know the size ,weight and price of that one.
Have you tried the ttartisans 0.95 50 ?
That's a Leica lens. They have a 50mm 1.2 APS-C lens though, would be interesting to see that one compared to this.
I haven't I'm afraid, though I hear it's very nice!
"You're pretty much guaranteed to get some separation." I'm tempted to make a hat joke here, but won't....
:)
I like your hut.
Thanks!
dear Sir, re your pronunciation of Jena, I have copied comment of a German speaker from Carl Zeiss video: Thanks again for an interesting video. Just to be pernickety: "Jena" is pronounced "Ye-na". Similarly, "Jenoptik" is "Yen-optik".
Thanks for the correction - ye-na it is!
here it says it's the worst lens he tested and he tested 2 copies just to be sure. ruclips.net/video/vNMLMU90fiA/видео.html
That's a big front element for an crop camera. Never impressed by these chinese lenses. But these colors are different, kinda soft in a way but bright. Kinda like pastel chalk colors but not flat like chalk. I want these colors in full frame.
The Canon 5d Classic can get those colors. It's a terrific camera. Even the mk ii is wonderful
Probably this isn't quite perfect on skin color. So maybe not very realistic for portraits. But for beauty/fashion shots or where you are not too close, it's Great especially if you have a nice environment around the person.
Now that would be nice!
Absolutely, agreed!
@@zenography7923 some older reviews of this say the lens was not sharp. I wonder if they have quality control issues. I guess buy from a place that allows returns. And check.
