- Brocollini is a cross-breed of brocolli and gailan (also called Chinese brocolli, a leafy green vegetable). Brocollinis have small florets and long stems.
Whislt easier to prepare than brocolli with less waste, both have similar nutrient profiles.
The seedling in the video was transplanted in spring and harvested by summer. Brocollini is a heavy feeder so premium potting mix was used with home grown compost.
Like all brassicas, brocollinis are prone to damage from slugs, snails, aphids, and the cabbage white butterflies. Covering with nets is the best option to protect the plant.
Overall, this was an easy plant to look after and required very little space. It received at least six hours of sun per day.
It tolerates light frost so best to plant in spring. We had an unseasonal hailstorm in summer and the net we put over the plant to protect from white butterflies proved useful against the unexpected onslaught of those tiny ice pellets!
Great job 🌱
Thanks!
I just learned this used to be called aspabroc in the US 😀 It does look and taste a bit like asparagus (in terms of the elongated stem)
