Food from the Balcony is for amateur gardeners like us with limited space. Based in New Zealand, this channel shares our first experience in, and learnings from, growing food in containers on a small 20 sq metre concrete patio.

The three key learnings are that:

1) Anyone can grow some food even in tight spaces -- on a balcony, patio, or window sill as long as there is sufficient light.

2) Understanding the specific needs of a plant (sunlight, water, nourishment, soil type and health, pest and disease management) will give it the best chance to thrive.

3) Not everything will go as planned because we can't control nature. And that's okay. It's fun to simply observe plants grow daily and harvest some food right at the doorstep.

From potatoes and tomatoes, to peppers, beans and peas, garlic and onion, strawberries, carrots, squash and salad greens, growing all these has made us respect nature more, and appreciate the effort that growers put in to bring food to our table.
