Eastenders does have some good dialogue. "You don't have three children with a block of ice." Nice one, Pauline😀
Eastenders ‘did’ have some good dialogue. This was over 10 years ago
richards actually said after her departure that it wasn't just the joe story she did not like but the entire direction the show had taken since its inception, she criticised it for lacking morality and traditional family values that it was rich in back at the start. She stated she wished she had left years earlier in an interview i read.
Yeh agree. She was so right. It changed. I can see that now as I'm watching the classic east. Enders from the start. On every day.Iy aired in 1983 I'm up to1997 so far 2 years I've been watching .it was so much better. Days were better ,what life was like they focused on and made good stories. Used their imagination. All they do now is focus on what's going on in world and the street. Put that in show plus them taking storylines from the old Classic east Easters 0 I've noticed that recent
@@beverlygannon4141 it didn't air until 85.
@@shanefolan I know right some people just don’t know what they talking about 😂
And how right she was. From 2005 onwards (with the exception of the 30th anniversary year) it's been awful to watch. But this era was the worst.
@@beverlygannon4141 Totally agree and I tell you what I don’t like as well the fact that I think they seem to think that the viewers like Phil Mitchell and kind of route for him and he’s so unlikable. It’s almost like they think are working-class people I’m sure that they root for the gangsters yeah
The writers ruined Pauline towards the end
Soap writers usually destroy characters due to their bitterness towards actors who decide to leave on their own terms. EastEnders just got way too dark and depressing, as Shaun Williamson (who played Barry) said. The last time I saw Pauline happy in EE was in 2005 when Sharon and Dennis briefly lived with her.
Yes Wendy Richards was gutted how Pauline Fowler ended up that's why she left
That was when eastenders nearly went down hill, there are few more storylines to come, Denise’s exs, syed coming out, stacey’s bipolar and more, but after Martin Kemp left eastenders, it was starting becoming like a circus, I wanted Leslie aka Dirty Den to stay, but he f*cked up big time and more
@@abbieroseholden4174 not to speak ill of the dead (and Richards is a legend in her own way) but from what I’ve heard she wasn’t a particularly nice person and wasn’t too far-removed from 2006 Pauline in real life.
@@Anonymous_Anon882I've also heard similar things, and that the reason Pauline got "nasty" is because the writers were actually writing Wendy and not Pauline.
He was calling michelle a scrubber not Pauline
The story of the Fowlers is just one big, decades long, depressing sob story. Way to go Eastenders for brightening our lives so much.
No one is forcing you to watch it are they?
I love how completely and utterly bored she looked as she smashed the plate against his head. Wendy was really phoning it in toward the end.
She was never really the best actor.
@@j04370859 Are You Being Served
@@007beck9 she was not good in that either, made me laugh how they made her out to be a beauty in that show lol
@@marklola12I bet you can't act for toffee
‘Mrs Hewitt I believe she was called’…
Hahaha, blokes done his homework
Clammy little hands 😂😂😂
RIP Wendy Richard.
You make my flesh creep hahahaha, Pauline always did get straight to the point
Joe was calling Michelle a scrubber, which was a bit much as he never even met her!
in fairess anyone who gets pregnant at 16 with their best friend's dad and then gets pregnant with her best friends ex is going for a reputation.
michelle was a scrubber and worse , shes bedded at least 2 married men , chased after old men ...then started sleeping with schoolboys ....
@@carlyonbay45 you’re a funny one but what you said is correct. Michelle probably needed some attention and maybe needed satisfaction.
Pauline was quite right to give Joe some cutlery
And, as if by magic...a plate appeared.
Pauline's 21 years on the show had granted her plenty of EXP, and by the time she became a level 100 drama queen, she was able to choose a perk which enabled plates to appear in her hand when she took swings at people!!!!!
If she'd lasted 30 years, she would've been able to choose a perk that allowed her to literally kill people with a death stare!!!!!! ;*(
Fraser Currie lol, history repeats itself, remember Pauline used the Frying pan to smack Arthur, lol 😂😈
Joe looks at the picture of Arthur, who does look like a younger version of him, and does a double take. "Arthur? So this is where my long lost twin brother ended up!"
I love this clip. Pauline's great and I totally agree it seemed out of character for her to marry Joe. But I think this storyline kinda redeemed that by having Pauline admit she will always be in love with Arthur and puts her family first.
Isn't the title a little misleading? I thought Joe was referring to Michelle as a "scrubber" when he picks up the photo of her.
I love how Pauline smashes the plate on Joe. He had that coming. No one messes with her family!
R.I.P Wendy.
Love eastenders.. But the classics are were bloody amazing 🌹💖
Wendy really didn't want Pauline to have a second hubby, I totally understand that. Pauline and Arthur forever.
This episode was just on last week, here in the States. I guess we're 10 years or so behind.
What did joe do to deserve such nastiness??
i dont like how in the end they turned her into a pure mpnster
Imagine being insulted by Mr Benn 🤣
Oh yeah!!!!
You think just because I’m old, I’ll settle for filth?!
She was already settling for filth just by marrying Joe in the first place. He was a diabolical character.
Joe wasn't calling Pauline a scrubber, he was referring to her daughter Michelle, that is who's picture he was smashing at the time.
Rip Pauline
a block of ice in bed...lmfao!
hahahaha!
yeah and that I could forgive but calling mark diseased was foul.
it actually makes me laugh the way he says 'scrubber'
LOL, plateslapped!
what're you gonna do pauline?
well, she showed him what she would do!
It's interesting to see the character say nice things about Arthur. They seemed so unhappy after the first couple of years.
The writing is completely over the top in this scene. Pauline did love Arthur but she was never blind to his faults. When he cheated on her, she took a very long time to even consider letting him move back in. In this scene, she's acting as if he was god's gift. I assume she's just trying to hurt Joe, but it is really OTT writing/acting.
@@iluvlafferty They did the same with Grant after he left-basically rewrote him. I recall a million times it being said that Grant left because of Phil or Peggy like he was some helpless victim and they caused him to leave when in fact most of Grant's misfortunes on the square were caused by his own behaviour.
Good on you, Pauline, lol!!!
@Rhys Hoffman Yea I agree but having said that when he hit her with the frying pan that fatal blow I couldn't help think ''good on you, Joe''. I just wish we'd seen it.
what episode was this
she was a smoker! shame, only 65! RIP wendy
when ee is good its very good but when it's bad like we see here then it's bad
You think because I'm old I'll settle for filth!
Wicked witch of the north
Pauline liked using cutlery/saucepan s for non dinner times
wen was this?
He was calling Michelle a scrubber, not Pauline. She was really vicious in this. Pauline saved her violence for her husbands didn't she? Arthur - frying pan. Joe - plate.
What a nasty/ hurtful thing to say to ur wife
It's depressing to see the Fowlers' living room all dark and empty after all of their family scenes in there in years gone by. ;*(
I think that was clearly intentional, they were going for the Mrs.Havisham thing I think there whereby Pauline was stuck in the past.
@@shanefolan Good observation.
@@stephenmcconnell1000 I recall seeing a documentary on Eastenders years ago and the producer said they'd created Ronnie based on some tragic character from Ancient Greek literature and he said they used classic stories to help them in their writing.
I would say Sharon and Grant were derived from Kathy and Heathcliff in Wuthering Heights as I've heard many people make comparisons between them. And yes as I read Wuthering Heights and saw Heathcliff becoming unhinged and sociopathic in his quest for revenge as a young man it reminded me very much of Grant in his self destructive routes he took. Also Cathy is similar to Sharon back then as she so loved him but couldn't tame him and could only run away from him in the end. Her departure was ultimately something Heathcliff never recovered from in the same way Grant never properly recovered from Sharon leaving him.
Or another comparison would be Bill and Nancy from Oliver and if you watch Oliver from 1968, Oliver Reid's performance as the stone hearted Bill Sykes is highly reminiscent of Grant in his early days. Even the way he hits out at Nancy and crushes her when she crosses him is again Grant and Sharon all over.
@@shanefolan9175 I've been trying to think of which mythological character she was based on because I've always been interested in the Greek myths. Persephone, Eurydice, Jocasta; don't think it's any of those but I can well imagine the writers seeking inspiration from those old stories. These continuing dramas often have a heavy dose of Greek tragedy involved in their storylines. The writers of Doctor Who in the 1970s also often borrowed ideas from literature; The Prisoner of Zenda, Frankenstein, etc. I don't suppose there's such a thing as a completely novel idea anymore so no wonder that writers pick up bits of inspiration by reworking so many well-known themes.
@@stephenmcconnell1000 I can't remember fully now as it was years ago but I think perhaps they said the Danielle/Ronnie story was based on some characters from Greek mythology. I wouldn't know my Greek mythology despite doing a module at it at University whilst studying English lit.
*I don't suppose there's such a thing as a completely novel idea anymore*
Yes don't they say in Hollywood that there are only 7 different scripts or something and after that every story is repeated.
I don't know why Pauline gone evil and then died.
Awful story line.
@@cliveevans9795 I read somewhere Wendy Richard who played Pauline left because she hated the direction her character was going. She didn’t like the storyline at the time and left because of this.
that's something else
What are you going to do Pauline shack you on head. lol
Never once did i ever see arthur make Pauline laugh, bloody lier
TheGodParticle lol 😂😈
Pauline was a different character in the 80s. She took Lou Beale’s dying advice a bit too literally.
R.I.P Wendy Richard
Joe Macer was bang out of order there - insulting Pauline' s family! He never even knew Mark or Arthur when they were alive & also didn't know Michelle personally. He had no right bringing up Pauline's personal family business & being so judgemental & bad-mouthing people he never even met! While Joe is an ex-con himself. He's so hypocrital & Hardly Mr. Perfect. I'm Glad Pauline smashed a plate on Joe's head & threw him out. He deversed that. Biggest mistake was the EE producers/writers making the character of Pauline re-marry. No way Pauline ever loved Joe the way, she loved Arthur. Arthur was the love of her life. I'm Glad Joe got a taste of his own medicine, after he died falling from a window in January 2007. After it was revealed he was the one who murdered Pauline on Xmas day 2006. At least Pauline & Arthur are together forever in heaven now.
Except joe because he's the husband from hell
@@MisterPolitical1 True. Marrying Joe was the biggest mistake of Pauline's life - Before he killed her! He's in hell now, not heaven.
Arthur and Pauline were never happy. They were depressed. Arthur loved Walford though!
@VampireSaviour
actually - god im so sad...but after Pauline and Arthur got back together - Pauline chucked the frying pan in the bin :L it had a slight dent in it xD x
haha! go pauline!
lol he (got served)
good job joe and he finished her off too :D
Pauline :(
This was such awful material for Wendy Richard to go out on. Pauline seems so full of hate. The last scene between Pauline and Sonia was cringe-inducing. The Joe storyline was probably done to punish her for leaving. It reminds me of how they killed off Tiffany against Martine McCutcheon's wishes just because she wanted a short break from EastEnders to pursue singing. EE went downhill after they killed off Steve Owen. It should have ended in 2007.
They also betrayed Pam St Clement because she wanted a hiatus from Eastenders in 2011 and they told her Pat wouldn’t be killed off but then said sod it we’ll put Pat on her death bed and be done with her.
@@JamieBoy-ij2ri Soap writers are very egotistical. They think they can get rid of anyone, even re-cast actors and that the viewers will just go along with it. If an actor wants a break, they punish them. Every soap is now a shadow of what they were back in the 90's
@@iluvlaffertyThe casting has nothing to do with the writers department, that's the casting department
RIP Wendy
@RandomPeter94 oh, they also used scrubber last night.
she has always had a thing with hiting people over the heads lol.
I,m surprised nobody hit pauline over her head with a frying pan or a plate.
@@cherylstevens4717they'd rather do it to you that's why

Some great dialogue, joe was a forgettable character but this was a classic. Wonder why i cant find his death anywhere.
It's up already on this channel for 11 years, "Pauline's Killer Revealed"
A history of violence...
She hits Arthur with a frying pan, then many years later Joe with a plate.
I'm betting it was the same frying pan Joe hit Pauline with that she hit Arthur with. lol
Pauline was always moody.
Don't mean to sound a geek but the video title is incorrect. Joe actually called Michelle a scrubber , not Pauline.
Geek.
@ frodoireland, Pauline went downhill after Arthur died. She just got more crone-like as time went on.
Joe was a device to simply have her move on with her life instead of moping for the remainder of it. It wouldn't have been entirely unrealistic.
Only Wendy Richard didn't like it and took her ball and went home, so to speak.
@randomdave30 in other words she was a true reflection of old people in the eastend
Big mistake killing Pauline off. Pauline is Eastenders! No respect for the character. But we keep Shirley.Denise.Jay.The Carters.
You do know that the women who played her wanted to leave the show don’t you
Surprised this crappy show hasn't recast her.
@@Noah-gx6uoThat would be difficult seeing as she died in 2006.

scrubba (smash)
They ruined Pauline - so sad they did that to such a great actress.
Pauline was good but they ruined her character in the last month
@@grahamberry4869 Try the last DECADE.
@@grahamberry4869 try the whole of 2006 in general. The last flashes of the Pauline of old were before she married Joe. And even then she was miserable as hell (and she’d been slowly heading in that direction since at least 1993).
He calls Michelle a scrubber not Pauline!
And then as if by magic a shopkeeper appeared.....
@No1mjfan88 I think you're thinking of her relationship with Derek back in 2001/2002-ish. She fell for him, but he turned out to be gay or something like that.
I'm in North America, and scrubber simply means someone who scrubs or cleans something with a brush. What does it mean when Joe is saying it?
It means a slut.
Loser
Happily married couple? They were always yelling at each other and hitting each other. Not to mention the cheating.
the wonderful arthur - three breakdowns - an affair - got his family into debt - 6 months in jail, lol.
pauline is carzy too, she knocks out arthur with her frying pan and knocks out joe with that plate.
I think in all honesty Arthur is/was one character you had to feel for, He lost his job at the Dinky Toy factory in the 80s and found it hard to get another job because of the high unemployment rate back then and Lou constantly badgering him and undermining him at every turn didn't help as no one knew what he was going through emotionally and mentally, and people constantly gave him grief because of the Christmas Club money he stole from his neighbours in order to pay for Michelle and Lofty's wedding, I know it wasn't the right thing to do but he did it out of love not malice.
And as far as his affair with Mrs. Hewitt was concerned, Pauline basically drove him into her arms because of the fact that she'd become as domineering as Lou was and was grateful for her accepting him for who he was.
I only remember him having one breakdown. What do you mean “three breakdowns”?
I agree with the now late Wendy Richard. Her exit Storyline didnt ring true to the character. Pauline Wouldnt have remarried, she had such old fashioned values . I know she could be a misery guts at times but her attitude to her loved ones in her final days was quite adverse from her character. as the walford matriarch she deserved a better exit .
@ilovesue2008 Because her house caught fire the month before.
Pauline’s mother Lou Beale was the same if you look at the EastEnders spin off Civvy Street when Lou was young she smiled a lot more and was fun to be around she turned in to a horrible women as she got older.
They made Pauline the same way. When she married Joe she never even took his surname Macer she kept the name Fowler. If that was me I’d be hurt if my new wife kept her late husbands name. But tbh it wasn’t just Joe she fell out with she disowned her son Martin and her daughter-in-law Sonia. Not surprising Joe hit her over the head with a frying pan resulting in her eventual death ironically the same frying pan she hit Arthur with in 1993 after his affair
They turned Pauline nasty in the end.. awful..used to love Pauline and Arthur
Fantastic scene, what an evil and vile man coming out with trash, lol 🤪😂😈
Preferred her as Miss Brahms.
whether pauline married joe or not richards would still have left the show, her health was in poor in the later years, one could even see in her last year in the show by her appearance that she wasn't a well woman
I think it was a stupid storyline. Pauline grew older quicker and they destroyed the character. She should never have married Joe and she should have stayed on a bit longer.
@Walford Maniac I totally agree. Don't know what the EE producers/writers were thinking making Pauline re-marry?! - 10 yrs after the death of her beloved Arthur. Still I'm glad Joe got killed off after he killed poor Pauline. Joe was a useless character anyway. He was hardly memorable. I'm sure actress Wendy Richards would have stayed in EE a bit longer till she retired - if only her character didn't get married again. I'm sad Pauline died but At least Pauline & Arthur are together forever in heaven.
Martin should’ve punched Joe out!
Nice one Pauline ... hey he was the narrator of mr ben wasn't he ?
He was callimg michelle a scrubber not pauline
@randomdave30 she was a lovely lady
is this joe?

Eastenders was better in the first 21 years until Pauline Fowler's passing.
What on earth 🌎 did they do to Pauline . Dreadful

leave the poor woman alone shes dead in real life aswel
Why did pauline have such bad lines in that scene, one line she says to joe, You make my flesh creep🤔 I've never heard that phrase before, i think the line was supposed to be, You make my skin crawl, she was just a boring character from 2000 onwards, couldn't wait for her to leave
Joe is a fucking legend.
He deserved that.
is it me or do they not use the word 'scubber', 'bitch' or 'tart' anymore?
They started to use the b word more
well she certainly showed him what she's going to do, pang smash crash
I can see both sides in this. Pauline turned hard after watching all her kids walk out of her life one by one. Of course, Martin's exit was all her as she was awful to Sonia.
The curious thing is that Richards resented Joe being foisted on Pauline as she felt it was disloyal to Arthur to have her remarry and inconsistent with her character.
I absolutely LOVE Eastenders. Been watching it since 1993.
im sorry but paulines house always looked dirty
Joe the only scrubbing going on here is trying to wash your thong on a hot wash. Even dot can't deal with your skid marks like they are from a Nissan. But Pauline it only cost 50p a load. Yes Joe but you blocked up my slot with your trolley token's. Besides I ran out of Daz.
