also i made this video in a day, sorry. i should add some more context to the line about the xeon -- i'm not saying the xeon is the best choice but it's what works good enough ish for other important conditions like a reliable server host with bare metal perf, good ddos mitigation, the server location we want, etc. but it's only been 2 days, we'll continue to explore options. we haven't exhaustively tried or explored everything.
though long term i'd have to think about how much it'd cost and if it's worth it, so the calculus is also about a cpu that's good enough that doesn't demand a billion dollars a month
just rent out the cheapest vps and torture the players
I don't know about it, but the CPU the server has is 4 years old. Wouldn't a modern core i7/ryzen 7 CPU work better to host since it doesn't seem to be more than a single core process?

Still doesn't really work. Infact it makes it worse. You can have 2 blue kritz medics building but one random kit sticky or rocket kills the whole blue push. Relying on rng will always be bad. Now do medieval mode. Degroot last point would be hilarious
Oh dear god
You could play blindfolded as huntsman Sniper and proba6get a few kills
there were a few degroot matches, and from my experience it is super hard for blue to win. everyone is constantly eating each others hits when they're on point, if they can even get on point that is. the one gate leading in is constantly filled with sniper arrows so you have to do a full push to get in.
We just did, before the server voted for Hightower Event for some reason and the game server went up in flames 3 minutes in.
It's pretty much impossible for BLU to win, and at 50v50, wherever you shoot an arrow, you hit or kill a player. It's very goofy.

A cpu with high single core performance, along with HT/SMT disabled, like i9-13900KS or R9 7900X would do way better than a puny Xeon. Especially in TF2, as you even stated that the server only utilizes a single thread.
Was thinking the same, he's spending the big bucks for a CPU made for multiple BIG servers when he's only running a single one. Either consumer grade CPUs are more than capable of running multiple servers as well and have very good cps/ips
This, server cpus are optimized for load not single core

Well, brother... you have found another egress from the house of Chaos.
The other day I was just thinking about a TF2/battlefield cross of sorts. 100 players, a massive map, the size of Battlefield ones, with selectable Spawn Rooms and like 15 control points across the map.
The issue right now is no map was designed to even facilitate 32 players lmao
We should call 50v50 games "SIEGE" and have a singular massive platform, one that you can not just stand near it, but on top of it. It has a decent sized platform, so you can also build atop it just to add craziness. Just to make it feel that they're literally pushing a siege weapon at you.
a singular what?

"...random crits are important part of the game..."
And thats how Valve defeated all the random crits deniers. Bow before Gaben !
I think if the respawn time got dramatically increased, it'll tone down the chaos and might actually be a viable gamemode
Maybe, but decreasing the time people actually get to play the game is bad for player retention, you'd have to strike a careful balance with it.
Depends, if it's on a real big map that has a lot of travel time, it's better to have reduced spawn time.
That'll just make the feedback-loop for every individual player feel worse, as they spend more time waiting to respawn than play. Especially with how the chaos can lead to people getting taken out at a moment's notice.
Nah, that would make it horribly boring, over 8 second spawn time is already pain.
Respawn time is already awful how it is now.
Time to kill in this game is usually a single frame and at MAXIMUM fights only last for two seconds.
Then it takes 10-15 seconds to respawn, and sometimes I see that timer go up to 20.
When you're dragged down by 11 whole other people in a standard casual match then TF2 becomes hard to justify to other people to say the least.
Sometimes it's not even that though and you're just on a trash map that only spawns you out of one or two doors facing the front. Then all it takes is ONE Demoman to completely shut down the game for everyone.
i was able to play the other night. it was really wild. i couldnt handle more than two or three maps, but i hope this concept sticks around. its a really fun break from playing 12v12

you do realize this is basically any Battlefield game.
Can confirm that it's a warzone, but it's definitely not WW3; this is classic, old-school war going on here.
The front lines is an omnipresent factor around which the game state is based. Engineer 'nests' become fortifications, outposts, and forward operating bases. You don't 'make a push,' you mount an offensive to gain ground and advance the front. Every strategic advantage you can take and maintain control of is indispensable. Every match is a whole-ass military operation.
