  • Hey guys! I found some LED headlights that are actually pretty good. They're from Auxito. In this video, we're going to install them, and compare them to typical halogen headlights.

    Very cool, I ended up retrofitting a projector on my Prius but I just went with the cheapest LED projector on amazon. It's been working great and it cost me less than $100

    Nice; will get some for the e46 eventually.

    I replaced my HIDs on my 2nd Gen to LEDs. $50 on Amazon.(Better then $200-$250/bulb HID replacement) And the install was pretty straightforward. Though, I did pull my headlight assemblies to do so.
    I thought having the LEDs in a HID housing was going to overkill. But I was surprised that my housing still have a very crisp cutoff that I was able to adjust accordingly even with the reflectors still installed.
    I have no been flashed at all since install and I do a ton of night driving(95%). So no angry motorists which is a plus to some.
    Also, the LEDs are so much brighter and whiting for the HIDs I replaced them with.
    Win/win in my book.

    I retrofited proper Bixenon Projectors into the oem housing - You can´t compare the performance of really good projectors to LED bulb upgrades - projectors are so much better and dont blind at all when adjustet correctly..

      @@michaelblacktree yeah they are the best and it´s not that hard of a job to do on the 2nd gen prius :) morimotos or nhk´s are great for the price, but all in all its not that cheap. My setup was around 500€

      now i watched your video to the end..exactly my thoughts about the temperature - dont like the blue-ish look of leds. That´s also why i chose and bixenon projector and not an led one. 4300k osram night breaker laser d2s bubls are perfect..

      I agree, 4300k would be perfect.

    Mr Blacktree... Your tutorials.. DIY and how to's have informed me to improve my Prius..
    I picked up a tow hitch and 1.25" to 2" hitch adapter for $50... Going to do a diy hitch cargo box next..
    I will check through your library for a video

      @@michaelblacktree it would be prudent of me to let you tackle a project like that first....
      This LED video will keep me from wasting $.. I want to improve the fog light output.. they are ineffective the way they are... Possibly rewiring the fog lights to work independently of the head lights???

      I installed LED fog light bulbs from amazon. They were so bright, I had to add a dimmer knob. I didn't film it, but I talked about it in the EcoModder build thread. Here's a link: ecomodder.com/forum/showthread.php/prius-experiment-40050-21.html

      The fog lights use 9006 / HB4 light bulbs. I'm using LED bulbs. But the beam pattern isn't very good. So I might change them.

    Now you need to swap out your fog lights with LED lights. Elevate your Prius to the next level. Tell auxito to send you a pair and a discount code for your viewers and or a give away HID kit for Prius gen 2 and why not a regular led pair too

    • @michaelblacktree
      @michaelblacktree  4 месяца назад

      The fog lights are LED already. And the pinned comment has a discount code.

    With all of those LEDS installed do you think you will notice any MPG improvements? I find it easier to notice marginal gains via a full tank rather than burning a quarter or half a tank at a time then topping off because that introduces variables.

    • @mq1506
      @mq1506 8 месяцев назад +1

      It's difficult with the Gen2 Prius as the tank has a bladder system that doesn't always allow the same amount of fuel.

    • @leveluplife8585
      @leveluplife8585 8 месяцев назад

      @@mq1506 I’m probably being optimistic, but do you expect fuel improvement from this mod? One step further would be LED brake lights/running lights as well. I did the same wheel covers as you and am seeing a consistent 50+ miles of range with regular driving habits

    • @michaelblacktree
      @michaelblacktree  8 месяцев назад +2

      I've experienced the "fuel bladder inconsistency" mentioned above. I actually stopped using fill-ups to gauge fuel efficiency mods, because it's too inconsistent. In the future, I'll be doing coast-down testing of the aero mods instead.

      @@leveluplife8585if we do a bunch of handwaving math, one liter of gas will power a 55 watt halogen headlight for 159 hours if we assume 100% efficiency of converting fuel to electricity. Realistically after the power has gone from the engine to the generator and then into the traction battery and then through the DC-DC converter into the 12V battery, I'd guess only 5-10% of that petrol becomes electricity. That roughly works out to say 5 hours of halogen headlight usage from 1L of gasoline. However that assumes you're not using power from regen so it's really a worst case scenario.
      If we assume that switching to LEDs draws 10% of the power then you'll only use .1 liters of gasoline over a 5 hour period of headlight usage.
      I average about 3L of fuel for every hour of driving assuming my average speed is 50 km/h. Turning on the halogen headlights would raise that to about 3.2L per hour. That's a difference of 39 MPG to 36 MPG.
      I've done a lot of handwaving here but by my estimates, the switch to LED should save you 2-3 MPG in a worst case scenario.
