@@takethesquid before Ace Ventura he did stand up and was on a show called In Living Color and he did some really good parody comedy, you can find his old just for laughs stand up here on youtube. He definitely was not the greatest actor of the 90s, but as merely one of the great actors of the 90s he fits. Personally feel he goes over the top often but when Carrey gets it right he can really bring a character to life.

Jim Carrey reminds me of Robbin Williams. It’s hysterical to see him doing the crazy comedy, but it’s also incredibly heartwarming to watch him just be real and gentle like that.
It's genuinely great to see Jim Carrey look and feel happy. There was a long period of time for the past 15-20 years where I just never seemed to see Jim happy in life. He seemed angry, or fed up with movies, or pissed off about Trump or whatever other politics he had going on in his personal life. I also wonder if he suffered from the same sort of thing we saw people like Dave Chappelle or Robin Williams seemed to suffer from. Call it "funny-guy syndrome" or whatever, but there seems to be quite a few people who make such a great living at making other people laugh and be happy, that they sometimes forget to make themselves happy too. Or they get tired of the pressure of "always having to be funny." Whatever Carrey's case was, I'm super happy to see him seemingly like his old self from the 90s. And I hope we, as the fans, can also understand that comics and comedy actors don't always have to be making us laugh. Sometimes, they need a break too.
Well being accused of being involved in his wife's suicide by her parents probably took it's toll...But I agree, it great to have Jim back! Let's hope he's alright and continue to do what he does best! :)
Pretty sure I remember hearing about in an interview or something that Jim did say that he actually did suffer from a type of self esteem/depression syndrome and it was a factor that enabled him to unleash and just be wacky and carefree in his comedy as somewhat of a coping mechanism. But I don't think anyone really wants to be seen as a "one trick pony" so maybe he just went through a period of time where he wanted something different in his life.
Everybody is focusing on what a good human being Jim is - which is awesome - but I'm just impressed with what a good actor he is. He didn't go full Ace Ventura in his performance, knowing he had to tone it down to hit the mark. He doesn't steal scenes, he is making them work. I hope we see him in more movies and roles where he can explore other characters. He's in so many of my memories by now, the man feels like family, and I wish him the best!

If you are creating a new IP/story/characters whatever its different but if you are working with legacy material/characters, especially properties like Sonic/SW ...etc...that have fans spanning generations. The characters are icons, people grew up with these characters...Luke, Sonic, Ninja Turtles...etc..... No we don't "own" the characters but if you disregard the fans you do it at your own peril. Maybe people would have still enjoyed Sonic with the original design but they would not have connected with it the same way and I don't think a lot of people would have turned out for the movie.

And I do believe you should disregard the fans if you want to unleash your creativity while remaining in the boundaries of the source material to create something special. Case in point God of War.

Clearly the studio had no good reason to do so other than making a bad guess, and correcting this issue seems to have won a lot of goodwill from the moviegoing public. The premise of the movie is not so powerful that people would care if not for being attached to the IP. If you have the option to be yea with fans and neutral on everyone else, better that than being nay with and neutral with everyone else. Though I think the irony here is that the movie is as popular as it is because of the mea culpa. If they went with a favored design since day one the movie might've flown completely under the radar.

As a father of a 3yo and a 5yo, it was so refreshing to see Jim Carrey as I fondly remember him from his 90 days, when I was I kid myself. And here I was again, watching him in the big screen and having an excellent time and laugh with my kids. Gosh this movie is good! Waiting anxious for the sequel!
The Tunguska blast was well covered in Carl Sagan's "Cosmos: A Personal Voyage", episode 4, "Heaven and Hell". That entire series is highly recommended.

I'm an adult. I was there when Sonic got his start, and I've been with it ever since. I went to the movie to see Sonic, and I was more than pleased. I didn't know what to expect from Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik. I thought it was a weird casting choice, but in the end, he did a really good job. I have no complaints, but still, Sonic was the best part of the movie for me.
Absolutely right. I went to see it with both my 3y and 5y boys. Was such a good time with the family and I laughted as I was a kid when I saw Ace Ventura.
From what i understood, robotnik was also like truman in a way. Because the government referred to him as a labrat and robotnik even said that he was an orphan. I think they were trying to make the origin of eggman, as an experiment of the government on how far a human mind could go? Thats just my opinion anyways, on what i understood from the movie
Brought my niece and nephew the other day too watch this. And Jim Carey was great in the movie really suited the role, couldn't have picked a better person.
The movie turned out really well. Great humor, faithful and compelling characterizations, and some legitimately heart-felt moments. Everyone involved seemed to really be enjoying themselves and doing their due diligence.
I might be 24 and was more of a Mario fan than Sonic. But I went and watched this movie with my wife. We both really enjoyed it! It’s great to see Jim Carrey back!
good interview. that first sonic design was bad by anyones standards. its a good job he listened to fans because at the end of the day the sonic IP wouldnt be as successful as it was without the fans because they connected with it. you start to mess with stuff with no reason its not so much that it falls out of favour with fans but starts to lose what people liked about it in the first place which is why the redesign is awesome.
Maybe he just doesn't want to endanger the success of the movie saying things against it at release or when he's under contract, and honestly, it his opinion but in this case he has to be thankful they changed the design as the movie wouldn't be as successful without it.
I think it wasn't so much the redesign as it was that fans got to have something changed and how it's not really the best idea to give the fans that much power. In a way he kinda stays consistant with that in this interview, saying he's not really gonna be asking fans everything, as if checking in with them. It's a case by case thing, as he says. Here, it was absolutely the right move to listen, since the movie GREATLY benefitted from the redesign. Other times, like with Justice League (fans complaining that BvS was humorless, so they turned JL into a poor-man's Marvel movie), it was a terrible move, specially because the same fans later complained that there were too many jokes. I think that Jim speaks pretty much the truth. Fans wanna be considered, so you can't just take a beloved icon and do whatever you please when it's clear that fans won't like it (it's them who will be buying tickets and who will either recommend or boycott your film), but ultimately you've gotta stay true to your vision and stop trying to please everybody. This movie did it right, it changed Sonic himself but nothing regarding the plot or concept, and even if some people would have rather had a game-accurate movie with the game's world and characters, they stuck to the earth plot and simply made it WORK. Even Robotnik, who is probably more Jim Carrey than the game's Eggman, just WORKED.
Jim Carey seems to have elevated himself with a next level of enlightenment, his answers are so profound and well thought out. I would like to hear more about his personal artistry and its deeper meaning of today's society.
I was surprised how good this film was. Me and my mate went and watched it because we'd seen all the other films at the cinema. Jim Carrey was actually really funny in it.
I do agree it’s case-by-case. It’s impossible to say that that kind of feedback is good or bad, but in this case, it was sort of a “we hate this and aren’t going to go see it” (which was likely). Then it’s changed and everyone goes and sees it, so the redesign really saved this movie.
I really hope to see another sonic the hedgehog movie and another mask from Jim Carrey hopefully they both happen only time will tell I keep praying for another mask

I have no complaints, but still, Sonic was the best part of the movie for me.
Absolutely right. I went to see it with both my 3y and 5y boys. Was such a good time with the family and I laughted as I was a kid when I saw Ace Ventura.

From what i understood, robotnik was also like truman in a way. Because the government referred to him as a labrat and robotnik even said that he was an orphan. I think they were trying to make the origin of eggman, as an experiment of the government on how far a human mind could go?

Brought my niece and nephew the other day too watch this. And Jim Carey was great in the movie really suited the role, couldn't have picked a better person.
The movie turned out really well. Great humor, faithful and compelling characterizations, and some legitimately heart-felt moments. Everyone involved seemed to really be enjoying themselves and doing their due diligence.
Jim, for all of his many flaws truly cares about the people who watch his performances.
All of us have flaws. Only few gives joy to millions of people.

good interview. that first sonic design was bad by anyones standards. its a good job he listened to fans because at the end of the day the sonic IP wouldnt be as successful as it was without the fans because they connected with it. you start to mess with stuff with no reason its not so much that it falls out of favour with fans but starts to lose what people liked about it in the first place which is why the redesign is awesome.

Maybe he just doesn't want to endanger the success of the movie saying things against it at release or when he's under contract, and honestly, it his opinion but in this case he has to be thankful they changed the design as the movie wouldn't be as successful without it.

I think it wasn't so much the redesign as it was that fans got to have something changed and how it's not really the best idea to give the fans that much power. In a way he kinda stays consistant with that in this interview, saying he's not really gonna be asking fans everything, as if checking in with them. It's a case by case thing, as he says. Here, it was absolutely the right move to listen, since the movie GREATLY benefitted from the redesign. Other times, like with Justice League (fans complaining that BvS was humorless, so they turned JL into a poor-man's Marvel movie), it was a terrible move, specially because the same fans later complained that there were too many jokes.
I think that Jim speaks pretty much the truth. Fans wanna be considered, so you can't just take a beloved icon and do whatever you please when it's clear that fans won't like it (it's them who will be buying tickets and who will either recommend or boycott your film), but ultimately you've gotta stay true to your vision and stop trying to please everybody. This movie did it right, it changed Sonic himself but nothing regarding the plot or concept, and even if some people would have rather had a game-accurate movie with the game's world and characters, they stuck to the earth plot and simply made it WORK. Even Robotnik, who is probably more Jim Carrey than the game's Eggman, just WORKED.

I do agree it’s case-by-case. It’s impossible to say that that kind of feedback is good or bad, but in this case, it was sort of a “we hate this and aren’t going to go see it” (which was likely). Then it’s changed and everyone goes and sees it, so the redesign really saved this movie.

Carrey's take on Robotnik in the commercials heavily reminds me of the weekday mornings Sonic cartoon version from the 1990s. All he missed was Scratch and Grounder.
