Why Jim Carrey Wanted to Play Robotnik in the Sonic Movie

- So the Sonic movie is great, in large part because all of the amazing performances in the film. While Jim Carrey is one of the highlights of the movie, he's also something of an unusual casting choice for the role of Doctor Robotnik, or, if you're Sonic and you give everyone weird nicknames, Eggman.
Jim Carrey has spoken at length about why he wanted to play Robotnik, and how he developed his character. He didn't have to play Sonic; this was a role that he chose. Despite not being very familiar with the source material, he found a lot of joy (and frustration) in researching Robotnik by playing the Sonic games with his 9-year-old grandson. It sounds like this was a wonderful bonding opportunity for the pair, even if Jim did have to sink some serious coin into the swear jar.
The real motivation behind taking the role, though, was because Jim wanted to take a jab at Silicon Valley billionaires. He wanted to explore the kind of megalomania that comes from being the smartest guy in the room, having all the coolest toys, but being so self-obsessed and insecure that you need to always be the centre of attention.
Essentially, Jim Carrey wanted to play Evil Tony Stark.
Turns out he's really good at it!
Anyways, hope you're having a great day. This will be our last video about the Sonic movie for the foreseeable future, which you'll probably be pleased to hear if you're getting sick of this topic.
Lots of love,

The dude doesn't even know anything about Sonic, yet he nailed what makes Robotnic so entertaining and interesting to so many people. Heck, he might've even improved Eggman's character in the process! It's nice seeing so much passion going into the role!
Just took 1 and a half weeks to prepare.
K not c
he did what sega and sonic team have failed to do for decades: give Robotnik depth
Not only that, but without even a glance at the myriad of available source material for the character, he's somehow nailed the most often accepted canonical motivations for Robotnik: He's an egocentric narcissist whose genius has gone to his head and thinks that robotics are far superior than natural life.
if it was anyone else the movie wouldnt be the same
If you look at how both Robotnik and Sonic's background are portrayed in the movie, they are both orphans with extraordinary gifts. While Sonic is still pretty much a kid and wants to use his power to protect what he loves and do good, Robotnik on the other hand appears to have had many negative interactions with people, who appear to have misunderstood and ridiculed him, which has made him the evil person he is today. It is a great dynamic the writers have created here, along with tying up many loose ends in the Sonic the Hedgehog universe for the movie. Jim will do a great job of exploring the Robotnik/Eggman character in upcoming sequels. The movie version of Sonic is now my number 1 version of the character and look forward to see the expanded universe and where the characters go next.
Why isn't this comment hearted yet?
Both Sonic and Robotnik/Eggman are essentially two sides of the same coin. It's kinda like Batman and The Joker. An unstoppable force meeting an immovable object.
Mark Ellem Agreed! I love what they’ve done and can’t wait to see more! I’m fascinated by film Robotnik.
>If you look at how both Robotnik and Sonic's background are portrayed in the movie, they are both orphans with extraordinary gifts
You know, this is the kind of "dramatic foil" that i wished the movie had more of between Sonic and Robotnik.
I liked the movie, but I felt it started going limp in the final battle because I never got the feel Sonic and Robotnik had reason to hate each other, not compared to how they made sure Sonic and Tom had reason to like each other. I mean Sonic and Robotnik meet up briefly in Tom's house, then there's the brief battle on the highway, and then... nothing. Sonic and Robotnik don't talk much, they don't antagonize each other.
Like I said, Tom and Sonic get plenty of time together. It's not just the one big scene at the bar, they have opposing themes ("I want to settle down and make friends" vs "I want to explore and prove myself to myself") and they're crucial in each other's emotional development. It was basic stuff, but they made sure to keep it going. I just wish the movie had time for a couple more scenes where Robotnik vs Sonic could have that kind of treatment. To explore the meaningful contrast that OP points out
They both are technically more and less intelligent than a normal person in their respective and special ways, differing with each other:
Sonic’s intelligence stems from his high processing speed to match with his super speed and ability to empathise/understand others emotionally (he almost learned to drive perfectly in a few hours, obviously he is still technically a child and hyperactive by nature as was shown in the movie so it’s quite easy to make mistakes; in his case though he has an understanding of empathy and is quite amicable by nature).
Robotnik’s intelligence is based upon the raw and stereotypical demonstration of intellect mixed with creativity (unlike Sonic though he lacks the capacity of basic empathy and understanding of emotional intelligence overall due to both of his negative upbringing and super genius level intellect which combined with his megalomaniac complex makes him unable to win at the end and change his mindset).
I mean... who wouldn't?
Jim Carrey is as whimsical as Robotnik should be!
it will take time to tell who did the eggman/robotnik role better.
carrey has some stiff competition for english eggmen.

@@galarstar052 I wasn't saying it's bad. I was just defending Sonic. Sorry
One thing I love about how they changed Sonic's powers in the movie
It actually explains Badniks. How little animals can power robots.
If a single quill from Sonic can give Eggman's pod the power to keep up with Sonic, a small Mobian animal could feasibly power a robot.
My thoughts exactly. Movie!Sonic's power seems to be intrinsic, but who's to say he's the only one who inexplicably has anything like it? I say he's gifted because of having a high concentration of some sort of midichlorian type thing, while most Mobians have just a little, but still enough to be noticeable with sheer study. This probably sets up the classic animals-as-batteries thing like you're saying. This is even corroborated by *--spoiler--*'s arrival in the stinger, as he zooms around in a fairly similar manner to Sonic, except with different coloration, meaning he might be in the same boat more or less
I think it so sonic execlusive, his quill shows "infinite power".

Jim Carrey experienced what's known as "ego death", achieved usually through psychedelics but it seems like he did it through transcendental meditation. Good for him. More rich elites like him need to have that type of spiritual awakening.
Ego death is something of yourself being non existent right?..
Sounds quite terrifying to me, but who am i to know this, Jim Carrey sure evolved in his own way that most people simply cannot observe.
@@Zoza15 ego death isn't about being dead at all. It's about not having an ego. Meaning, doing something for fun, rather than have it done as an ego stroke.
@@watertommyz "doing something for fun" is not at all the same thing as ego death - ego death is a state of being in which the ego actually ceases to exist altogether. As weirdboo said, it is a common occurrence with high doses of psychedelics (much higher than you should even think about doing if it's your first time on psychedelics, to be frank). The Mind Field episode about psychedelics covers this subject, as well as the RUclipsr PsychedSubstance.
Not just rich elites, but others should stop being as egotistical
Ego Death is the suspension or breaking of the default mode network. It can be achieved through meditation.
Robontik being an anti-Tony Stark is a pretty unique and interesting way of looking at him. While similar characters like Dr. Wily are characterized by their intense jealousy, Robotnik is more like Tony Stark where his true demons are internalized. Dr. Wily wouldn't be the same without his envy of Dr. Light and Megaman, but Dr. Robotnik would be the same whether he's fighting Sonic or anyone else.
Video Game Robotnik HAD to fight on the good guy's side on a few occasions. And, yeah, he isn't a much different person at those times.

Jim Carey literally got famous by playing live action maniac cartoon characters! 🤯
Hanniffy Dinn including the Grinch?
Fernando Ramos yeah, he’s nuts in that movie, a real cartoon character!
I remember him getting famous by being a comedian.
emma kai he got mega famous though his crazy film roles you dumb ass!
Hanniffy Dinn nope! He was in sketch comedy which was a spring board to his movie success and notoriety sooooo
Why? More like why not? Almost every jim carrey role has been memorable on his own way, and Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik will be no exception.
It really makes me happy that Jim enjoyed playing this character so much that he wants to play him again, in some interviews he makes clear that there's a lot of room for growth and that he's aware Robotnik has yet to become what fans expect him to be. He even says he talked a little bit with the director about possible places to take the character.
It would have been easy to portray Robotnik as this round bald supervillain with a giant mustache from the start, but I'm much more interested in this slower development, much like what they did with Sonic.
Just imagine your grandpa being Jim Carrey
"I'll get that hedgehog" - The Mask
Jim is a perfect blend of the more serious form of robotnik from games like sonic unleashed and sonic satam and the more cartoony form of robotnik like aosth which defines robotnik as a character and makes the movie robotnik feel like he would fit in the sonic universe. I hope to see more of jim carrey in the sequel as a more unhinged version we saw
Jim Carrey moves & acts like a cartoon character. That's one of the reasons why he's nearly perfect, for the role as Dr. Robotnik.
Jim Carrey's portrayal of Robotnik gave off a vibe that reminded me of the old 90s American cartoon Robotnik.
That's exactly the vibe I got as well and absolutely love it. He nailed the image of robotnik that i had going into the movie.
Exactly. I was thinking specifically of SatAM's Robotnik every single time he opened his mouth.
Nobody else will, so must... _[takes breath]_ PINGAS!
I will consider this role for Jim Carrey being like a Robert Downey Junior was for Iron Man perfectly cast and this is his Redemption his big comeback
Iron Man...? Is that a reference to how Dr. Robotnik was called an "anti-Tony Stark"?
He's probably the best Robotnik AKA Eggman interpreter I've seen so far.
This is no discredit to the voice actors that played Eggman, they were all amazing too.
I bet even the guy who voiced robotic originally from Japan would have approved of Jim Carrey's performance as Robotnik
@@3dpoollvr I just hope the creators of Sonic are happy with how well their characters are doing in the box office definitely looking forward to a sequel with Tails and Knuckles in it.

People gonna be hatin on poor jim and his take on robotniks background.
But in all honesty. I like this take, it fits with his already known personailty through all the sonic games both new and classic.
Cause in the end, he is pretty spot on. Robotnik wants to impress EVERYONE.
Some of the earliest lore of him is his desire to create the ultimate theme park.
And what is a theme park made for?
To impress and grab the attention and wanting from everyone.
And i felt Jim Carrey as robotnik was just perfect role. Also a good way to unleash some of the desperaity he have gained through the years a villanous character.
I can not imagine any better therapy for jim.
Ivo Robotnik needs Jim Carrey.
Jim Carrey needs Ivo Robotnik.
i havent seen anyone complain about his robotnik tbf
Is it really that far from what the games establish? Its been a while since I last looked at what Robotnik's official backstory is supposed to be, but I do remember he was supposed to be neglected and lonely during childhood and emotionally stunted in adulthood.
@ That's right, he was related to Maria. Oh, yeah...
Speaking of, the biggest reason I don't like this film being set in 2019/2020 means Robotnik in this version is an American orphan. They literally can't do the "Sonic Adventure 2" storyline. No Grandpa, no Maria, no Shado.... Wait, no Shadow? WOOHOO!
@@ElvenRaptor The movie basically completely ignores existing sonic canon (Longclaw is a totally original character, [redacted after credits scene spoiler] has absolutely zero actual introduction as part of the universe or having any connection to existing characters) so I think it's safe to assume that they can introduce whichever characters they damn well want, and the justification for why they exist probably isn't going to look anything like the games.
@@ElvenRaptor his grandfather died making a colony to help humanity all because people feared all that he made. Were Maria alive he would have been his aunt, he makes machines styled after games and wants an empire styled around a theme park. His own theme song talks how proud his is of his intelligence, how he’s confident that what he’s doing is better for everyone and anyone that tries to stop him will be destroyed. In multiple games it’s clear Eggman draws a distinct line in his destruction. He will kill any and all that are a threat to him but he will not destroy everything else. The moment the entire earth gets put in danger he steps up to stop it.
It all sounds like a lonely man who wants attention, is egotistical but ultimately wants a better future for the world- with him at the top of course.

actually the director of the sonic movie asked Jim to played as Dr. Robotnik and he said yes. And Jeff Fowler said that it was a dream come true when Jim join in and Jim also will like to be in a sequel for the sonic movie
I had my doubts initially, but actually seeing him as Eggman really blew those doubts away. He's not just perfect for the role, I don't think anyone else could do the role now.
This is literally one of the most wholesome videos you have ever made. Bravo! You hit my feels!
Thank you 😁
It's good having Jim Carrey for so many reasons. I've been a supporter from the get go, especially considering how versatile his expressions can be in characters like the Mask and Grinch. He is like an animation bought to life. I am particularly happy with Robotniks progression in the movie and like how we get to see where he comes and his evolution into almost fullblown Eggman mode which leaves me very excited for a sequel. He has a great attitude towards the character and the way he talks about Robotniks mental state is awesome to see someome respect their video game based character this way. If I were to ever meet Jim Carrey I would say thank you for bringing a memorable Robotnik to life and giving me a fun time at the Cinema and that I loved it!
Honestly, i don't know what to be impressed more by. Jim's perceptiveness, or a 16-bits games ability to convey character with just 3-5 sprites or animation. That description of Eggman is pretty spot on.
Thats surprising. I thought he would see modern or cartoon versions of Robotnik/Eggman as references to emulate a similar take but somehow he got it very close as a way to start his evolution of robotnik going insane as its like an origins story
Why not Danny Devitto? Cuz he's 75 years old and they obviously want to keep making this movies for at least the next ten years?
I'd say Jim's portrayal of the character makes me think of a PG version of Rick Sanchez. And I love it.

Why did Jim Carrey play Robotnik in the movie?
Because we don't have the technology to resurrect Long John Baldry.
Fair point... but Jim Carrey still did an excellent job.

I'm LOL, at the mental thought of Jim Carey playing a Sonic the Hedgehog game and just sending Sonic right off into a pit of spikes. He is Robotnik!
Y’all know Dr. Eggman is like 6ft tall? Why in the hell would they cast Danny Devito which is 4’10”.
Geralt of Trivia never guess height from 16-bit sprites. Sonic Adventure 2 is the game where you can walk around as Eggman in chao world.
Geralt of Trivia It’s obvious that his height is above average for a male. You can see it on Sonic 06 as well

Never thought I’d hear Jim Carrey talking about how the self is a construct, but there you go.
5:06 I understood that reference.
It feels more like the movie is based on Sonic Adventure than Sonic 1.
Nah, it's a prequel to Sonic 1
Sonic 0
No, it feels like a start to something new
I think it's best to think of it as an entirely new universe existing independently from the games, but you can tell it takes inspiration from both the 16-bit and Adventure characters and storylines. There were many nods to elements from the classic games but also e.g. to scenes from Adventure.
@@technoguyx Exactly how I would explain it.
I’ve only seen this and the animatic of his graduation speech, and based on just those things you can tell Jim Carrey’s really philosophical. I love it.
Jim got the maniacal laugh down at the end.
Also, Danny DeVito is too old to play someone as crazy as Eggman.
Danny would be a good fit for Wario.
"So my kid could watch it." would be the usual response for actors playing a certain part.

0:09 Kintobor? That's a deep cut. You guys know your stuff.
Ovi Kintobor to be precise (soz)
The real reason he wanted to do it is because "Egg Man" is a lyric in the Beatles song "I am the walrus". It's LITERALLY that simple. He is THAT crazy and wants to feel connected to all of the things he admires while seeing it as somewhat serendipitous or even supernatural. He can now feel like the lyrics to "i am the walrus" are coming from HIM in some weird way. After all he does believe that "I am you as you are he as you are me and we are all together". He can feel like he owns the lyric "I am the Egg Man" because he now has PLAYED the part of "Egg Man" from Sonic. It helps reinforce his belief that he is somehow John Lennon as well. Im sure if confronted with this he may readily admit it. He even quoted a line from "Eleanore Rigby" DURING a Sonic interview and is an known AVID Beatle fan.
Kristie Jackson he did sing of a cover of I am the walrus in a break in the lyrics in the video he quips that he is defacing a priceless treasure and for his next trick he’ll paint a mustache on the Mona Lisa while using the Shroud of Turin as a drop cloth indicating he knows that he of all people has no business even touching that song
@@brandonporter8509 Wow

I was expecting his Eggman to be good, but I wasn’t expecting his Eggman to be genuinely intimidating.
Apparently one of Carrey's grandkids is an *avid* Sonic fan, and that was a major part of why he accepted the role.
I love that Film where Ace Ventura becomes Eggman. Nice work, Mr. Carrey! ;)
Robotnik is a genius, is smarter than everyone but is mental. Jim Carey fits this perfectly, he's hilarious and is over the top.
Thinking back on it, I don't think anyone could've done a better job being Robotnik either. No one would be as expressive as he is, and Jim Carrey is definitely one of my all time favorite actors.
I always pictured J. K. Simmons playing the Robotnik I imagined, but Jim did a good job with his take.

Really? The writers confirmed this? I'd thought that it was going for a "Sonic Adventure/Sonic X hybrid" adaptation
I can see your point.
What i love about Jim Carrey's portrayal is that he manage keep Dr. Robotnic a fun villain, while making him believably smart and giving him a logical motivation while also establishing that he is a legitimate threat. We must also consider the fact that no real human will have the exacy physiology as Dr. Robotnic. Sure Sonic is alien and so explain his apearance but robotnic is human. The movie basicaly shown a story arc of how Dr. Robotnic turned to what he looks like in game and its brilliant. I bet on Sonic 2, he will be 100% accurate to the game model because of the alien mushroom diet.
I actually thought it would've been a dream when I first heard about the movie if Jim played Eggman and it surprised me a lot when that is exactly who they revealed as Dr. Robotnik.
I love your videos and the informative content in them. I really love the stories you tell and how you tell them. But I'm constantly amazed at how effective your "slideshow" animation is. I've always wanted to get into simple animation, but even basic stuff felt too much for me. This feels wonderful! And I think I could do it on an iPad. I'd love to see how you go about creating these, and the programs you use.
Thanks so much! It really is very basic, simply because I'm not much of an animator. I just draw the picture in different layers, then export them one by one, then put them together basically as a slideshow. The hardest part is syncing the pictures to the audio. I wouldn't have patience for anything more complicated! 😅
Looks like jim carey got the master plan who would’ve thought good video
This channel is kind of addicting and I'm glad.
Damn. How did Jim understand Dr. Eggman (more or less) without really playing the games? He is a perfect fit out of anyone else.
I basically call the Sonic movie, Ace Ventura 3.
It's Jim Carrey playing an eccentric, over the top expert chasing after an exotic animal. This time it's a blue supersonic hedgehog, but in the past it's been a football playing dolphin mascot and an albino bat worshiped as a god by an indigenous people.
Yeah it's that minus the transphobic jokes of the first Ace Ventura.
Robotnik, prior to being banished to mushroom land, goes on a hunt for Mary Samsonite with his animal friends in a green mask and flower shirt after coming down with a chronic disability to lie.
Make it happen.
Is weird Jim idea of dr. Robotnik is very similar to what dr. Robotnik is in the sonic adventure games, sonic x anime, and sonic boom cartoon
Jim carrey was perfect for the role prove me wrong his kookiness is the perfect behaviour to put in there for it
By the way, I love you'ved used Christian Whitehead's logo intro for the Sonic ports as your text boxes!
Could also be a "start" of this incarnation of Eggman and they could use other actors as he grows in character.
I didn't even know that it has a grandson you and me will learn things everything all day
My idea for a character like Robotnic, was he came to the world and maybe one of the people that world fell for him and he fell for her. But during an experiment he accidentally mortally wounded her. He tried putting all of his wisdom to use in reviving her, but failed and this broke him so badly that he start putting everything into robotic shells, so that he could control everything and thus ensure he would never lose anyone again.
The fact that they chose Jim Carey shows they understand the character
Why?... WHY NOT!!! Jim ROCKS!
it's probably to give that 90s vibe, which makes sense considering Jim carry was really popular in the 90s and early 2000s
Because he's awesome , that's why .

If i ever meet Jim Carrey in real life, i just say a respectful thank you and leave him be. He doesn't want to be bothered, yet it might be a once in a lifetime chance. This is most likely the best 50/50 behaviour of all.
I didn't think his acting as Robotnick was bad I really loved his acting as Robotnick. I especially loved the voice actors for Sonic and for the after credit scene tails sounded great to
I don't know, but I think Jim Carrey would make an excellent joker either him or Willem Dafoe.
I don't know if this could be a possibility, but you guys should do something on the amazing music duo Hyper Potions.
