  • A combined easy clutch and hand-operated rear brake for motorbikes as an alternative to a Rekluse? Clake has been doing some very trick things by bikes since they invented the One Light Clutch. The Clake Two uses two levers for the clutch and rear brake and it's a very intuitive system that provides a great alternative to the Rekluse auto clutches. Check out the other Clake products at www.clake.com.au Please be aware Clake have had been inundated with orders since this review was posted, I'd suggest emailing them to see how long your order would take.
    CLAKE 2 REVIEW
    Recently we reviewed the Clake One light clutch which a few of the guys bought last year, a clutch that is incredibly light but doesn't use any extra travel to achieve that lightness.
    I was sufficiently impressed to check out the Clake gear myself and opted for the Clake 2, a very trick bit of engineering that is essentially a combined light clutch and rear brake setup which I've used for several months now.
    So how does it work? The inside lever is the clutch, and it uses the same technology as the Clake One Light Clutch to give you effortless one finger control. If you use the outer lever, this applies the rear brake. The really brilliant part is that as you squeeze further, the clutch is also pulled in, which in effect means you are far less likely to stall the bike.
    A year ago I got rid of my Rekluse auto clutch as for my purposes it was cheating - I wasn't developing my clutch skills at all. The beauty of the Clake 2 is that I have full use of the clutch with an exceptionally light pull and heaps of feel, but can still make use of it's anti-stall nature. And for anyone who has ridden a bicycle the hand operated rear brake is very intuitive and takes only minutes to get used to.
    The dual hand lever design is a work of art. Some riders opt for keeping fingers on both levers at all times, but I've settled on the one finger and just moving it slightly to either lever. It was surprising how quickly this became second nature.
    I quickly noticed how my fingers had far more control over the rear brake than my clumsy foot in boots. Down steep hills I now rarely lock up the rear wheel so am using more rear brake than before. And of course this meant that rear brake chatter is now largely a thing of the past.
    I did not realise how much influence body positioning had over the old rear brake. As you move your body backward and forward over the bike this makes it harder to modulate the rear brake. This really stands out on steep downhills - as it gets steeper it gets harder to operate the rear brake but the Clake 2 allows perfect rear brake control regardless of how steep or gnarly the terrain is.
    Coming into right hand corners I could now have my foot off the peg for balance but still operate the rear brake. In fact I started to notice how often I couldn't use the rear brake before. When stuck on a steep hill climb, I could now u-turn the bike to the left if needed as I could still operate the rear brake. And when doing pivot turns in very tight sections I can now just upend the bike and spin it around on its rear wheel. Also when I'm off the bike and moving it around in rough ground it's much easier to use the rear brake. I've even found it makes loading and unloading the bike easier!
    I can see how the Clake 2 particularly makes advanced techniques so much easier. When lifting the front wheel up, it's so much easier to cover the rear brake with one finger to prevent flipping. I had so much trouble with covering the rear brake with my foot that I never bothered with those slow Graham Jarvis style wheelies but it's so easy with the Clake I'm now working on those. Personally I'm not into those slide in sideways and power out of corners but can see how the Clake 2 would make those so easy for right hand corners.
    The Clake 2 is adjustable at the lever, and also has a range of cams for almost infinite adjustment. You can control how much the clutch and rear brake overlap, if at all and how quickly the engage as well.
    Some riders opt to not run the old foot lever for the brake at all, but there is the option to retain this so you can swap between hand and foot operated rear brake if wanted.
    CLAKE 2 ISSUES
    Expense
    Lock up when panicking
    All in all we are extremely impressed with the Clake 2. If you are thinking of a Rekluse auto clutch but can't help feel you are cheating, this is a great alternative as you still have full manual control of your clutch but it's easy intuitive feel and anti stall nature will make a big difference to your riding.

    LONG TERM COMMENTS: Apparently since these vids came out, demand has soared. But increasingly customers have complained about not being able to contact Clake as they are too busy with production. I'm not sure if this has improved or not... but just be aware it could take a long time to get any response if you have problems. I've had quite a few customers contact me saying they could never get the Clake guys to answer emails... and I passed on these messages. They just said it's best if customers ring directly between 8am to 9am (Melbourne time) before they hit the factory floor. This could be tricky timing for overseas customers.
    Some of us find it really hard to install... especially when bleeding the system. I'm a hopeless mechanic and had to take it to the factory to get it done properly. Probably best if you are very handy at that sort of thing. When I tried to fit it to my next bike eventually I gave up and sold it, despite good phone support from the Clake guys. But I wasn't going to drive 1600km to have them get it right. 😥 Since doing this vid Clake have updated their installation instructions which has helped many apparently, the earlier instructions weren't very clear.
    CLAKE 2 or PRO LEVER? The Clake Pro Lever? Unfortunately I never got a chance to review this. Both very similar... the Clake 2 has the "clutch only" option with that inside lever immediately. The Pro Lever, move a little selector across to get the "clutch only". Clake 2 suits better if you will regularly swap between "clutch only" and "clutch/rear brake" when riding as you just move your finger across, otherwise the Pro Lever's simplicity could be the better choice.

      I really enjoyed my clake pro but the loss of riding weekends spent in the shed trying to bleed the thing put me
      Off and I sold it. It’s a shame they haven’t spent the time to set up a dealer network across the country to assist in installing it. I’d buy another if I could guarantee it would be bled up right.

      It's time for you to try the Clake Pro! I was worried the Clake Pro might make it harder to wheelie well as the transition between clutch only and brake might interfere with your balance when going from feathering the clutch to braking. I'm still deciding if it's worth the dollars.

    I can't believe the amount of people sooking about price.
    So much more control over your bike with the rear brake on the bars with the bonus of a lighter clutch. Riding improves so much more.
    A quality product made in Oz.
    I guess some people can't see cost vs reward.
    The same people who cry about everything is made overseas....🙄

    I know itsIan old video but to anyone looking at the Clake. Yes its a bit painful to bleed but cable tying the lever overnight to the bars solved the issues I was having. My second hand Beta came with Clake 2 and a spare but bent Prolever. Never really liked the 2 lever setup as years of road riding big twins with bad efi fueling had me ride constantly with 2 fingers on the clutch at all times. I use it to modulate the power at low speed and do it constantly on the dirt. I finally got a new prolever for it and I love it. Its just a regular 2 or 1 finger clutch but as soon it gets about half way to the bars and the clutch is fully disengaged it starts working as a brake. Given the price I'd be hesitant buying one new however I really dislike riding without it now. Bar mounted rear brake just makes so much sense. Autoclutch on the other hand meh, not sure what purpose that serves and I use the clutch as a secondary throttle anyway so never really stall it. Definitely worth a go though if you can afford it or find a second hand one. Clake should have a think about some simple written instructions explaining the different cams and what their numbers mean though. I had to watch the videos over and over and take notes. Not the most well documented product.

      Great products once they are set up. But I agree Rupert, the documentation could be better. It seems to be common with a small business where they ge overwhelmed by demand then never seem to have the time to get their support fully sorted...

    Thanks for this video. I saw it and got interested. I ordered one and installed it.
    It's just really great. For me it's a game changer. I'm 6'4" and have size 16 feet. Using the rear brake was always a funky with my side on the relatively small frames of dirt bikes.The freedom the lake 2 gives to how you use your legs is just great. Cakes video installation instructions are bloody great too, with the added charm of a nice thick Aussie accent!
    It's expensive, but not over priced, the workmanship and design that went into this product is worth every pennie.
    I went into a wobble / fishtail on a fast section today and I attribute me not going down to the clake two. I gave the bike a stab of rear brake and clutch to go from fishtailing left, right, left etc to swinging over to a slide on one side, I then threw open the clutch and gave it some throttle and came out of it. I would not have been able to reach the foot brake as the fish tailing had thrown both my feet off the pegs and I needed to throw my legs back to help stabilize the bike.
    I also like the fact that I chose the set that keeps the rear brake on the peddle as well.
    Found it nice to stab the rear brake with my foot here and there.

    One would think that there is a fine target to hit when adjusting overlapping of brake and clutch - not enough overlapping and you get a moment where you lose your engine breaking before engaging the rear brake, to much and you slide your clutch plates or even stall.
    For backing it in (supermoto or flat track) it sounds kind of spot on! lock the rear and disengage clutch for downshifting with one pull and quickly release for a smooth transfer of brake back to engine breaking.
    After I finish modding rox risers and find lowered foot pegs I might give this lever a try.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 лет назад +4

      +Ariel Rotem the clake 2 is quite popular in supermoto, and there are a few guys road racing with them as well. i'd love to still be using one but my arthritic fingers need all the help they can get so i'm using the clake one light clutch now.

    Looks like a good bit of gear Barry, very well engineered, we run Rekluse auto clutches and LHRB and ditch the foot brake completely, about $70 for a custom brake line and use the KTM clutch as the master for the rear brake however we need to use a spacer to increase the fluid volume. However the Clake looks like a great option to this setup

  • @Steveman61

    Thx for another good review Barry. Besides the fact that the Clake master cylinders are expensive, they do not fit in plug'n play if one uses original KTM handguards. I mailed my concerns to Owen, but he was pissed (at least I think so) and didnt even answer. The handguards you use are not those from KTM-power parts and they seem to give a little more room. Even though you had to add a bushing to gain some extra space.
    However, the Clake parts are cool and innovative, no doubt.
    Cheers from vis-a-vis ;)

    ill definetly say this. most humans use our hands and fingers much more than we use our feet and toes. it only makes sense that a rear brake that is hand operated works better. As a mountain biker now just getting into riding a dirtbike, I can attest to the accuracy in control that using your hands can give you. Now i just wonder if i can figure out a setup where my front brake and rear brake are both on my bars, and my rear brake is on the right while the front is one the left (just like my bike). thatll be hilarity when my buddies ride it.

    Hi, been following your channel for a while now. I'm trying tobdecide whether to buy the clake one light clutch or save up and get the clake 2. Would you suffer a heavy clutch for a few months in order to get the 2 over the 1? Or would you buy the 1 and save up longer for a 2?! Thanks, I've been trying to decide for a while now and have saved up enough for the 1 but can't decide as I've never used or seen either in the flesh. Thanks again

      +Jams g that's a tough one jams... for the sort of technical riding we do the clake 2 is absolutely brilliant. i'm sure it would be great for some aspects of endurocross too. i'll list what i think the benefits of the clake 2. i think most of these would apply in your case but possibly not the last one? we use it when bull dogging down hills or upending the bike for tight u-turns etc:
      - rear braking on right hand corners with your leg out for stability
      - rear brake control is not affected by body movement or terrain
      - much finer control of the rear brake for maximum traction
      - less stalls due to the rear wheel locking up far less often
      - full rear brake access even when not on the bike

    I like the look of it, coming from mountain biking I think it would be very helpful. But can regular levers be made to fit the system? or are there cheaper replacements? I tend to break/bend more than i like to admit and it seems a bit pricey to be constantly changing them...

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 лет назад +1

      grassy lands no way you'd get a standard lever in there, they push against cams to get a much lighter pull but without having to pull further... i can't find any reports of someone braking a lever or any part of the assembly but i'll try to get a figure on replacement costs and annotate the vid accordingly.

    Question regarding this system for "cross training". At about the 1 minute mark you mention you ditched the rekluse auto-clutch as it is "cheating". How do you feel a hand operated rear brake is not cheating in this respect? Isn't the intent to keep the controls as they would be on any other motorcycle, thus sharpening skills that map to any bike?!
    I struggle mastering the foot op rear brake on my bike. I think I plainly see the advantage of having it as a hand control instead. But I worry it would make me depend on having a hand control available. Which it won't be on most machines I ride.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 лет назад +1

      +Colin Samuel personally i think anything that gives you extra control is great... i use 'cheating' in inverted commas because there are always diehard guys who think almost any non-stock mod is cheating. when my middle aged fingers finally can't cope with the clutch anymore i'll happily revert to an autoclutch.

    So on a forum a few years back you were talking about the clake 2, and you mentioned that Melissa had purchased the Clake SLR, wondering how that worked out? The Clake 2 looks amazing, but I was looking at the SLR as the clutch and my stock brembo master cylinder as the brake (Clake recommends this as the SLR is lighter than the stock clutch) Figured I'd top it off with a midwest cleverlever as the brake and be about $250 short of the Clake 2. Any one have thoughts on this? or am I better off not being cheap and buying the 2? I have a 2015 FE501s, if that's relevant.

    Nice video, thanks!
    I'm in the market for a LHRB primarily for motard use and better wheelie control, though I'm not sure if the Clake two is right for that.
    Something about this setup that scares me is that the RB and clutch work in unison. Correct me if I am wrong about this, but if you want to apply RB at the balance point, the clutch is also engaged- meaning I can't alternate between feathering the RB and applying more throttle.
    Or have I misunderstood the mechanics of this device ?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 лет назад +2

      surg23 with the clake two, you have two levers. one does just the clutch and nothing else, moving the finger slightly and the other lever does the clutch then increasingly the rear brake. you can use different cams to choose the degree of overlap between clutch and rear brake, if any, and how fast/slow each is applied.
      the pro lever is extremely similar but just has one lever... there's a small toggle you can flip while riding to choose clutch only, or clutch/rear brake as above. hope that makes sense. i haven't tried the pro lever yet but a mate of mine has had one for years and loves it.

    • @surg23
      @surg23 9 лет назад +1

      Oh I see!
      Is it possible to have the outside lever setup to just actuate the RB ?
      I just don't like the idea of being forced to engage the clutch when applying the RB.
      Thanks!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 лет назад +1

      surg23 could question, possibly... i'd suggest asking the clake guys about that. but the current setup works really well as an anti-stall measure, but if you want just the brake and no clutch action you can always revert to the rear brake lever if you keep that installed.

    So watched a few of your videos this one caught my attention due to breaking a couple fingers on the left hand 6 months ago negotiating unsighted water filled 4WD holes after clearing a water bar...
    I also seen your video on the CLEVER Lever. I bought the CLEVER levers both brake and clutch simply because they were a cheaper option. Loves the brake lever its a keeper however still having issues with clutch.
    I am on a 2014 Husky FE350 known for having a heavy clutch...

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 лет назад +1

      +Matt Taylor i think the clever levers are handy for slightly lightening the clutch, matt. i found they reduced clutch pull by up to a third initially but to fully disengage the clutch it still needed about the same pressure as stock. plus you had to pull it all the way into the bars. way more expensive, but the clake one light clutch is ridiculously light, about 75% easier and doesn't have to be pulled into the bars.

      No worries thanks for the speedy reply!!
      So the Clake can be adjusted to fully engage without pulling all the way in? Is this standard or is part of playing with cams?
      My main issue with the clutch is the initial reach, thought the clever lever may of helped by changing my technique to the single finger on the clutch rather then my usual 2 finger technique but still have the issues with lack of strength in the fingers....
      Will have to put this on the shopping list!!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 лет назад +1

      +Matt Taylor the clake is set up to engage and disengage at roughly the same points as a stock clutch, but with just way less effort. so the handy thing is you can adjust it in for small hands and make all sorts of adjustments. i'm actually not sure if you can fit different cams to change the way it engages though matt, maybe check the website?

    Would you say the clutch pull is even lighter than a standard KTM hydraulic clutch? (KTM 500 EXC in my case). I am debating wether to go for this or the Rekluse EXP 3.0 - but the Rekluse feels a bit like cheating! I imagine the one finger clutch + hand operated rear brake would be more fun than the Rekluse as long as it is light enough to reduce arm-pump :)

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 лет назад +2

      kullsyreholdig01 way lighter than a standard ktm clutch, it's more on par with a trials bike. i did use a rekluse for a year but realized i wasn't really developing my skills. but a rekluse is fine if you want to only take your riding to a certain point then just chill out.

      still sort of cheating :P
      A guy I ride with has this same set up on his 500 excf and it took a massive slick downhill to notice he's paddling feet down with the rear locking up and the bike running?!?!
      would be a great help to riding for sure, makes the transition for bike riders easier too as I always struggled with my foot positioning to cover the rear at times - something I'm working on bike/body positioning.
      the design is awesome! price point is the killer tho
      especially since I tend to break the nice things I get.. but I will ask for a ride of the 500 next time to test it out

    I've watched your review of the Clake 2 over and over. I definitely want one, but the buy in is painful! I've actually wanted a LH rear brake for a long time, because downhill right turns can be sketchy! But now trying to pick up some cross training abilities, I can see how the LHRB would provide a measure of security and natural feel to covering and using the rear brake. Plus a super soft clutch provides even more control over the beast that is the 500 EXC.
    So I notice you have only one single lever in front of the left hand grip on the Principessa, and it's not a Clake. Do you plan to mount a Clake, either the 2 or perhaps the pro lever, on the red beauty? I'm most interested in your current opinion on this matter!

      that was ages ago, can't even remember now. almost everyone just uses a spacer and a longer bolt to push their handguard out enough... usually the clake 2 only needs another cm or space to fit. clake sell a spacer if needed but just a pile of washers will do the trick cheaply.

      Greg Farrell not yet greg, i'm not only a riding gumby but a mechanical gumby too so had trouble fitting it. :-( the clake guys are coming to my city soon for an even and said they'll fit it for me, how good is that?!

      Sweetman i think the $ are the only downside, sweetman. I actually visited melbourne recently and dropped in to see these guys and saw the manufacturing involved and can see they don't actually make much money on these... the intricacy and sheer amount of machining involved is incredible but they don't want to trust a chinese factory with the precision needed. :-(

      @Sweetmanmoto 9 лет назад +2

      It's a risk either way (home-made quality vs. costs) but hopefully their choice to make it a better quality product pays off for them in the long run. I never tire of your awesome videos man - Keep it up :)

    Very cool bit of kit man! Couple of questions: Do you still have the rear foot brake lever there as well or do you solely use the hand operated one? You said you gave up the Rekluse as it wasn't helping your skill levels. I am going through the same thing right now. A mate made a hill the other day that I didn't and I don't like giving excuses or anything, but I know that him having a Rekluse really gave him the advantage and got him up the hill. I was determined to go home straight away and order a Clake clutch myself, but then I thought, well isn't that giving me the same sort of advantage over other riders who don't use a Clake and therefore not helping me with my skill levels also? I'm not "having a go" by any stretch of the imagination, I just wanted to know your thoughts on this.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 лет назад +3

      JoeJoe Moto i've kept the rear brake, i can see why some guys ditch it but i just like having it there for some reason! i reckon some guys would still see the clake two as "cheating"... but if it is then it's a much much reduced level. you still have full manual use of the clutch, and the anti-stall feature only kicks in if you are using the rear brake, and are using the outer lever. to me it's just a much more intuitive system - we all grew up riding bicycles with the left hand doing the rear brake and to me this is just a logical (if bloody expensive!) extension of that. :-)

    • @JoeJoeMoto
      @JoeJoeMoto 9 лет назад +1

      CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES Thanks for the explanation mate. I agree with you hey. It's still a clutch, just a bit of a different one hey.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 лет назад +1

      JoeJoe Moto well... must admit i still think i'm cheating a bit. i mean jarvis doesn't use one, and he's my personal deity at the moment. :-) but at my advanced age i think i'm entitled to a smidgen of cheating!

    • @JoeJoeMoto
      @JoeJoeMoto 9 лет назад +1

      CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES hahaha yeah, in our group of riders, we all have what we call "Cheat codes", one runs a Rekluse, two of us use trails tyres etc. I know what you mean about Jarvis though, it is why I put the first comment up. It would be awesome to be the kind of rider that no matter what bike you got onto, you could still do all the same stuff, right out of the box without the "cheat codes"!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  9 лет назад +3

      how cool, instead of a cheat code for a computer game it would be a jarvis code for riding. :-)

      I've decided I'd try the medium compound to see how much more traction I get to my usual hard compound on my usual tyres. I'll also need new tyres before I ride to the Cape. I hope they last a good while for that reason :P

    Looks like an amazing product, but at $780 minimum that's out of my reach. And $50 for a spare master cylinder and $100 for a spare lever, just seems a little too much

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  6 лет назад +1

      the only way to get cheaper would be move manufacturing to china and the guys said it would be a constant battle to ensure the quality needed for the more intricate parts. :(

    Can you set this system up so it does not pull in the clutch when you use the rear brake as it would cause the bike to freewheel say into corners or am I missing something

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 лет назад +1

      +ishak roberts not really ishak as the point is to prevent stalling... BUT you can change the internal cam so that there's quite a bit of overlap between clutch and brake e.g. you would have engine braking as well until you pulled the lever in hard enough to start locking up the rear wheel. some guys set them up like this, others like me prefer to have minimal overlap.

      Thanks for the reply. Maybe then that's a new product in the making one light clutch with a 3 finger lever with the clake slr running above, which you could make your own by just buying the clake slr and using stock clutch so maybe it may not sell enough to invest in producing it :-)

  • @A.Dude.
    @A.Dude. 4 года назад +1

    In all honesty, I love the ingenuity of this product, HOWEVER... There are as well things I don't like and then are some aspects I hate... Now, to the good stuff; if will make your clutch lighter (per claim); I like the way it's thought and built. Now to what I don't like: The design; it's plain UGLY. Now to things I hate about it: Here we have esthetics as well as functionality. First off, if you come to the market at this price-point, you will HAVE to allow for some customer preferences regarding the lever, also allow the system to accept different, eventually stock levers because NOBODY wants a bike with mismatched levers. Second, what happens if you paper-cut your pull finger, the only one which has room on the lever, does this mean you can't ride your bike because you cut some bread and got it wrong? It will soften your strength over time and diminish your ability to ride a bike without this device. All in all, it will give you satisfaction if your bike has an over-stiff clutch (many different ways to address that), but it won't match the esthetic, it will have you ride with some miss-match and you're limited to having your pull-finger healthy...

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  4 года назад +2

      i have to admit it ain't pretty. 😂 i have wondered myself if it could be made smaller, or more attractive, or use stock levers...

    Am i the only one who is confused at the fact that he didn't bring over the Clake 2 to the beta?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 лет назад +3

      +Laser Born it's been asked and replied to in lots of comments... the clake 2 does lighten the clutch a fair bit, but my middle aged fingers are really struggling nowadays so i reverted to the clake one light clutch which is super light. at this rate i'll probably be back on an auto clutch within a year. :(

    • @laserborn9612
      @laserborn9612 8 лет назад +1

      CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES Oh! So the clake 2 doesn't lighten it as much?
      Is it because its half way connected to the brake?
      If your hands are weakening you should get something to train them. (I personally use "Abilica HandGrips")
      My new bike is much stronger and therefore has a harder clutch, so i used these every day and now i can almost pull in the clutch with one finger. (But not for a long time, yet.)

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  8 лет назад +1

      +Laser Born yep, the clutch is lighter but then activating the rear brake does reduce the lightness. all the muscles are fine for making the fingers work, it's just the joints themselves being in the early stages of arthritis which you can't do much about other than regular exercise, good diet etc.

    • @laserborn9612
      @laserborn9612 8 лет назад

      CROSS TRAINING, ENDUROCROSS & ENDURO TECHNIQUES Oh well, i guess maybe, just maybe, we will find a way to "cure" artheritis.
      But until then, you can atleast exercise!

      George doubleyuh yeah i had my concerns about that too but once the barkbuster is spaced out it's no more exposed than a normal master cylinder. and i've got the mounting bolts slightly loose as usual so it'll twist if i did land the bike upside down.
