What gives me pause about the August Wilson is that accessibility there is pretty bad, unless they do some major renovation. As it is now, that entrance foyer isn't accessible at all without stairs.
Danny Burstein was in the 2014 remounting of the revival as Herr Schulz, for which he was Tony nominated. I’d wager we won’t see him in this production.
i think anne hathaway has expressed interest in sally before 👀 and they have the les mis connection, maybe Eddie would be able to convince her with the idea of a tony
It also seems to me that Jessie Buckley is not gonna return to her role as Sally Bowles in this Broadway transfer. In the last 6 weeks of her run, she was not in quite a lot, sometimes she was only doing 4 shows a week or just absent for a whole week. Maybe this explains why she's not gonna return.
I remember hearing about that, when she won the Olivier. Apparently, many in the UK did not feel she deserved the nomination, let alone to win, because of how inconsistent her attendance was.
@@ChienaAvtzon I attended the 2022 Olivier Award ceremony live at the Royal Albert Hall. When her name was announced as the winner, the entire auditorium erupted in great applause, with many giving her a standing ovation. Her acting, singing, and performance undoubtedly earned her this award, especially since she also won the Best Actress prize at the Critics' Circle Theatre Awards for her role in Cabaret (though Cabaret didn't win Best Musical in that award). While I do agree that commitment is very important, I am not sure whether consistent attendance is considered in the award criteria. She expressed sincere apologies, explaining that she was not feeling well. I don't blame her or other actors/actresses for such situations, but as I mentioned earlier, I appreciate those who are committed to performing in 8 shows a week for months or even years.
Given the likely sky-high ticket prices, would you recommend this production to someone who is not necessarily a Cabaret superfan? I've only ever seen a touring production at the Kennedy Center, and I was glad to have seen it but it's not something I've ever felt the need to see again. Would this production sell it to me more successfully/ differently than previous revivals? I realize I'm asking a potentially subjective question but would welcome anyone's opinion!
I’d heard the rumours about the show opening at the August Wilson and Billie Piper potentially playing Sally when I was in NY last month, chatted to a couple of theatre workers who seemed to have all the inside info. And yes the word on the street in New York is that Eddie is very keen to come back and reprise the role of the Emcee 👀
I'd be so excited for Billie!! But I really don't want to see Eddie. He's just too famous for the role, personally. It would be distracting for me. I'd love if he had a great alternate and a planned day off each week that I could book.
I wonder how well received a theater in the round staging would be received on Broadway. It's worked before, but think the show might do better with immersive seating and a jutting stage.
Eva Noblezada is leaving hadestown so that is sone suspicious timing… Also, Krysta Rodriques is currently doing another production of cabaret so it would be interesting if they were cast someone from there
Cabaret is so synonymous with Studio 54 that it's gonna be weird to see a production at another Broadway theatre, but Studio 54 also needs a break from that show. 🤣 I'm very curious how they'll dress the August Wilson.
If color coding happens, I could see Cynthia Erivo, making her Broadway return (and it’s free advertising for Wicked 💚). Cynthia is British so that part is taken care of and she an emotional powerhouse.
I saw the Studio 54 revival but, unfortunately, not until the stunt casting phase with Molly Ringwald as Sally. It was apparent that her acting style was meant for the camera and not the theater. Sally, of course, is a big personality but Molly's performance was small and contained. John Stamos was the MC and was surprisingly good (perhaps because my expectations were low). I'm looking forward to seeing this version when it arrives and hope they cast an actor who can command the stage as Sally.
With entrance in London (and presumably in New York) through the stage door and up stairs, does anyone know how entry for disabled audience members was accommodated?
You forgot Jennifer Jason Leigh as Sally w/ Alan Cummings they’re incredibly close friends IRL I think they need to snag Billie Piper for Broadway and I honestly think Mason Alexander Park should continue the role on Bway. He’s much more well known here in US and he’s currently killing it on the West End.
For some reason, I wanted Monica Barbaro to be on Broadway and the perfect role I wanted to see her in is Sally Bowles in Cabaret. Now that Cabaret is coming to Broadway, and Monica is going to be an excellent singer, she’s starring in a new Bob Dylan biopic, I think Monica would be the best Sally Bowles ever! 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Eva Noblezada is a possibility... I would also be curious to see Kathryn Gallagher in the role, she was excellent in both Jagged Little Pill and Spring Awakening... Barrett Wilbert Weed is another one I'd be curious about
I don’t think Lea Michele would sell tickets. People paid to see her do Funny Girl because they wanted to hear her sing DROMP but I do t think people would want to see her in anything else. Her reputation is too tarnished. I want Eva Noblezada to do it. She has the voice and she deserves to do a show where she doesn’t die. I would love Micaela Diamond though. I’ve seen Parade three times and every time I’ve seen her all I can think is that she is going to become a superstar.
As far as Billie Piper goes, I think it's actually more likely americans would know her as the person who coughed blood all over Reeve Carney in Penny Dreadful. I love Doctor Who, but it's very much niche here. Also wanted to say thank you so much for mentioning Fat Ham during your NYC trip. I managed to see the final evening performance because of it.
I'm honestly wondering, especially with the writers strike delaying production even more, if they could nab Millie Bobby Brown or Sadie Sink. Sadie has already been on Broadway, and Millie has always dreamed of being on Broadway. They're probably out of the price range, but I feel like that's the star power they need. I don't think Eddie Redmayne is the draw they think he is.
I have not even watched this yet but idk if you know there is extreme upset as Funny Girl just announced Fanny for the national tour and well it seems she isn't Jewish.
Many Jewish actresses are rightly angry over that casting. As a Jewish woman myself, I hope the “Funny Girl” tour flops if the producers do not recast Fanny Brice…. ASAP!!!!
@@ChienaAvtzon I was so excited about it too! It's really sad, and I blame the casting directors because they had to know that they can't just cast some-Jewish person as Fanny and not expect an uproar. I feel bad for the actress still because I don't think she quite understood what she has gotten into.
@@that1theatreguy - I do not feel bad for the actress. Carol Burnett was originally offered the role of Fanny Brice, and turned it down, because she believed it should launch a Jewish actress’ career. Which is how and why Barbara Streisand ended up being cast. The revival essentially launched Julie Benko’s career, when she turned out to be incredibly popular, and kept the show afloat long enough for Lea Michelle to be cast. Lea Michelle, while not Jewish, at least had a Jewish father. So, she has some cultural and ethnic connection. It is not dissimilar to when Josh Groban, who’s father is Jewish, portrayed Tevye in high school. But to cast a completely non-Jewish actress as a Jewish woman from Brooklyn is actually quite offensive. As it plays into every antisemitic stereotype.
@@ChienaAvtzon I see your point and also Queen Carol. I can't even imagine how Funny Girl would've turned out had any of the other actresses said yes or not dropped out of it (Mary Martin, I think). But still, the casting directors shouldn't have cast her (Because we need to consider her feelings as actors are people just like we are) in the first place because it's disrespectful to Jewish people. I don't know if they'll just ignore the backlash or recast her. But like it also raises the question of what would the real Fanny Brice think about any of this because so many people (even her daughter who didn't like Barbra) have spoken on who should and shouldn't play her.
Danny Bernstein would be great but we know this because he did it in the last revival at studio 54 he was phenomenal!!! I’d 100% welcome him back to this role❣️❣️❣️❣️
That show is having a strictly limited run, and rumor is it might not even be able to finish the run. The musical was nowhere near finished when Sondheim passed away. Plus, the schedules do not overlap. As “Cabaret” is opening around March/April time.
My predictions for Cabaret on bway The Emcee: Eddie Redmayne Sally Bowles: Maude Apatow Cliff Bradshaw: Joshua Henry Fräulein Schneider: Victoria Clark Herr Schultz: Chip Zien Herr Ernst Ludwig: Jason Forbach Fräulein Kost: Hannah Corneau
As a woman, I think it's deeply irresponsible of you painting someone wanting to work with someone and asking if they want to come aboard their passion project as misogynistic. He's not picking from a list. He's just hoping they'll want to work on the project. He got Jessie Buckley on board even before there was a director.
“Cabaret” is very much associated with Joel Gray and Alan Cumming as the Emcee, on Broadway. However, Eddie Redmayne is a huge name and is quite quirky. I am not surprised he cast himself as the Emcee, and was a creative force. Josh Groban did the same thing with “Sweeney Todd”. Micaela Diamond would be a wonderful Sally Bowles. She is incredibly talented and I loved her as Lucille Frank, in “Parade”. PS: Mickey, Emma Watson is tone deaf and cannot sing.
@@lonellfletcher - Not only is Emma Watson tone deaf, she cannot act. No one would pay Broadway prices to see her. That type of stunt casting might work in the West End, but after what happened with Beanie Feldstein in “Funny Girl”, it will not fly on Broadway. If the “Cabaret” producers cast anyone from the Wizarding World, it would most likely be Dan Fogler for Herr Schultz. Since, he worked with Eddie Redmayne and won a Tony for a role in a musical.
This won’t happen, but really they should just cast Emily Benjamin and make her the international star she deserves to be. Anyone who’s happened to see her take on Sally in London is very lucky!
can not see them tearing up the A.Wilson theatre.......making it into a club like in London the show at the Broadway...where they tore. up the theatre...is not doing very well.....and has a huge cost for the show because
As great as “Cabaret” is, I do not see this revival being as popular as the “Funny Girl” and “Sweeney Todd” revivals. Even if “Sweeney Todd” remains open after Josh Groban leaves. While, it is great that younger audiences are loving “Cabaret” in the West End, immersive musicals are not well-received by Broadway audiences. It is viewed as a pointless and annoying gimmick. However, if the staging is changed and contained on the proscenium, then it could be incredibly successful. Though, Eddie Redmayne better realize he is going to be compared to Joel Grey and Alan Cummings. Both of whom set the standard for the Emcee on Broadway. Especially, since this revival could easily come across as a vanity project. As Eddie Redmayne is playing towards type, akin to Hugh Jackman in “The Music Man”. Whereas, Josh Groban went against type, for “Sweeney Todd”.
I AGREE with your assessment...do not think ready for another revival of CABERET...unless some how really different staging of the show....and not INTERMISSIVE....those shows do not draw audiences...and can not afford to destroy a theatre .......
@@0530evan - The most immersive a musical was ever able to get, and still be successful on Broadway, was “Moulin Rouge”. Which, like “Cabaret”, takes place within a nightclub.
Lea Michelle is rumored to be attached to the “Chess” revival. Those producers need a huge marquee name, if they are going to entice investors. Since, “Chess” was a notorious flop on Broadway, and Americans associate the song “Anthem” with Josh Groban. The score is also stylistically very different from “Funny Girl”.
I know - every time I said it I was like "there's no second s is there?" but my brain was committed to it and by the time I was editing it was too late 😅
of what they did to the BROADWAY theatre.....do not think American audiences really into an ""intermissive environment""...after all..Oklahoma did not really do that well here
“Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812” was one of the biggest flops in Broadway history, and much of it was due to it being immersive. It literally tanked the moment Josh Groban left. While, many producers refused to invest in it, because they predicted it would fail to capture an audience…. even with Josh Groban having above-title-billing. So, it is pretty safe to say, that immersive musicals are not to a NYC audience’s tastes. Though, it is very possible the Broadway transfer of “Cabaret” will be contained on a traditional proscenium stage. Especially, since the August Wilson is known for being a beautiful theater.
Redmayne doesn't have a good enough voice for American MT audiences, even if he's an amazing actor. Casting him again would be a mistake overall. Someone like Mason Alexander Park is a much better fit for NY, even if they're not nearly as well known. The press magnet should focus on Sally regardless, and Jessie Buckley would be ideal if she wants it. Micaela Diamond has a beautiful voice... and very little acting range. Sally HAS prioritize and actor over singing for the role to work (and textually is not supposed to sound gorgeous necessarily), and the Emcee has to have both but is predominantly a singer. A combination of the two of them at the top of the cast would be so woeful to the strength of the production.
I saw Michelle Williams as Sally Bowles on Broadway a good few years ago. Wasn't majorly impressed with her take on Sally. Played her a bit ditsy. I think Emma Watson would be a good choice. Or perhaps Anna Kendrick!
I felt the same! The rest of the cast was phenomenal. Williams just didn't seem comfortable in the role or on stage. I do love her in many films but she was not a good fit in Cabaret.
@@sarah.93.31 - How did you not know that? It was incredibly obvious Emma Watson was auto tuned. Emma Watson was so tone deaf, the recording studio had to break every syllable apart and jigsaw her voice back together. Even Dan Stevens, who cannot sing either, did not require that much editing.
Billie Piper would bring so much to Sally, not just in terms of star power but also an astonishing skill set. She would be electrifying as Sally!!!!

Lily James or Amanda Seyfried would slay
Are you going to see Blood Brothers this year (UK an Ireland tour)?
If they are going for movie stars, I'd love to see Florence Pugh or Saoirse Ronan have a crack at Sally
One of those has been offered the role in London before 👀
I'd still love to see the Emcee presented opposite of the usual, something more like a leather bear. I hope to be able to see this when it opens!
I enjoyed Molly...I didn't find her low key at all.
@@kallen868 I enjoyed her too and it was not a bad performance. I just did not feel a stage presence that commanded the theater at any point.
With entrance in London (and presumably in New York) through the stage door and up stairs, does anyone know how entry for disabled audience members was accommodated?
I believe there is a street level door that goes to the gold bar (which is the old foyer)
You forgot Jennifer Jason Leigh as Sally w/ Alan Cummings they’re incredibly close friends IRL
I think they need to snag Billie Piper for Broadway and I honestly think Mason Alexander Park should continue the role on Bway. He’s much more well known here in US and he’s currently killing it on the West End.
Mason and Billie would be my dream. I'd fly in and watch it atleast 3 nights in a row.
I'm dying to see Andrew garfield as the emcee
Yes
Omg yes, PLEASE!
This is literally the only "famous movie star" I could ever accept in the role!! He'd be so good.
Billie Piper would be a HARDCORE Sally.
Billy Porter as Emcee would be stupendous.
Billy Porter is great, but him playing the Emcee defeats the purpose of the character. The Emcee is German and supports the Nazi regime.
For future reference, it's Alan Cumming (without an s) 😊
i'm throwing Krysta Rodriguez into the mix for Sally Bowles, as Barrington Stage's production with her starring in the same role had glowing reviews!
Micaela Diamond...but if we must have a movie star...Florence Pugh // Anya Taylor Joy. I will gladly taker either of those options!
Eddie Raymond is returning. I heard that Sally might be. MICAELA
DIAMOND Leah Michelle is doing the Chess revival
Micaela Diamond is amazing and would be wonderful as Sally.
Danny Bernstein would be great but we know this because he did it in the last revival at studio 54 he was phenomenal!!! I’d 100% welcome him back to this role❣️❣️❣️❣️
Id hardly call Eddie being involved in casting his Sally misogynistic.....
They just announced the cast for the new Stephen Sondheim musical and Micaela Diamond is in it, so I guess someone else for Cabaret?
That show is having a strictly limited run, and rumor is it might not even be able to finish the run. The musical was nowhere near finished when Sondheim passed away. Plus, the schedules do not overlap. As “Cabaret” is opening around March/April time.
My predictions for Cabaret on bway
The Emcee: Eddie Redmayne
Sally Bowles: Maude Apatow
Cliff Bradshaw: Joshua Henry
Fräulein Schneider: Victoria Clark
Herr Schultz: Chip Zien
Herr Ernst Ludwig: Jason Forbach
Fräulein Kost: Hannah Corneau
Norbert Leo Butz is not Jewish. Mickey said, this production exclusively casts Jewish actors as Herr Schulz.
@@ChienaAvtzon oh really? I thought he was. My mistake
Joshua Henry shouldn't be wasted on a role as small as Cliff imo. Love the idea of Vicky Clark as Schneider.
Jessie Mueller would be great as Sally.
What about Jane Krankowski or Kristen Chenoweth
Too mature.
@@kallen868 not for Fraulein Kost or Schneider
@@susanpolastaples9688Krakowski could probably do Kost well in her sleep. Would be interesting to see her Schneider.
Mason Alexander park for emcee....the best so far
Emma Watson, bless her heart, doesn't have the goods to play Sally Bowles. She peaked with playing Hermione.
From what I've heard Lea Michele's next gig is a Carnegie Hall concert.
As a woman, I think it's deeply irresponsible of you painting someone wanting to work with someone and asking if they want to come aboard their passion project as misogynistic. He's not picking from a list. He's just hoping they'll want to work on the project. He got Jessie Buckley on board even before there was a director.
Cara Delivigne!
People need to let go of this obsession with Watson. No, Mickey!!! Just no!!!!
If you want someone who is not the greatest singer, or dancer, Emma Watson's the ticket.
Gimme Christian Borle as the Emcee, would just love that
This won’t happen, but really they should just cast Emily Benjamin and make her the international star she deserves to be. Anyone who’s happened to see her take on Sally in London is very lucky!
can not see them tearing up the A.Wilson theatre.......making it into a club like in London
the show at the Broadway...where they tore. up the theatre...is not doing very well.....and has a huge cost for the show because
As great as “Cabaret” is, I do not see this revival being as popular as the “Funny Girl” and “Sweeney Todd” revivals.
My bet - Lea Michelle. Sally Bowles is a far cry from Fanny Brice as a character.
Juno Temple
I'd love a star who doesn't have to fake the Brit accent.
I’d love Jessie Buckley to open it, but if she’s not able to my vote is Evan Rachel Wood.
Tony shaloob for heir shultz
Hear me out.. Emily Hampshire as Sally Bowles.
I dunno why but I’d really like to see Leslie Odom Jr as Cliff, even though we’d we shorted his singing abilities.
His ego is way too big to accept a role that small lol
*Alan Cumming
Especially, since the August Wilson is known for being a beautiful theater.
queremos Myra Ruiz
it already won best revival Lolo which is funny
Billie Piper would be an inspired choice.
Emma Watson can’t actually sing…virtually every note of Beauty and the Beast had to be edited.
@@1pureboy1 ah didn’t know that. Not her then 👍
@@sarah.93.31 - How did you not know that? It was incredibly obvious Emma Watson was auto tuned. Emma Watson was so tone deaf, the recording studio had to break every syllable apart and jigsaw her voice back together. Even Dan Stevens, who cannot sing either, did not require that much editing.
@@ChienaAvtzon fair enough. I can’t sing either but I ain’t judging
Emily Hampshire should be Sally!
Can someone explain why Eddie’s statement might be “”questionably misogynistic”? I’m genuinely asking, does Eddie’s statement imply something?
It was mostly a throwaway comment but the concept of a male lead having final approval over his female co-star is inherently a little bit dodge to me.
@@MickeyJoTheatre ohh 😮 I see what you mean now. Thanks for explaining 😊.
Eva noblezada is leaving hadestown tho
Americans do use the word foyer lol don't worry
