I had seen a brief clip of one of the videos but I just assumed it was filming for promotional material not actually live in the show. Was absolutely shook by it! This is VERY exciting news! I can’t wait! I thought of the Hudson for Sunset too because of ATG and because the Hudson does limited runs . If anything going in after Merrily? Majestic seems unlikely since the theater probably needs quite a bit of work, post-Phantom. Mondays are dark on Broadway for most, but not all, shows. I had not heard that Plaza Suite was transferring. I saw it when it was at the Hudson. She was better than he was.
As an American, I have seen the revival of Cabaret in the West End twice and am obsessed with it. I have tickets to see it the week it opens in April on Broadway.

Its so frustrating that the run was so short and so many people won't get to see it before the transfer. It feels like this was just a warm up for NY, because lets face it, it's Jamie Lloyd. A Broadway transfer was always going to happen, so why so soon?
The question of where is FASCINATING, the Savoy adds so much to the experience in the London show with its glorious art deco interior (almost standing in for Norma’s mansion), complementing the minimalist staging. I think the Hudson is too small, not grand enough for me. I like the idea of the new Palace, since the wonderful interior would have been renovated, only that area outside the theater/new complex is ridiculously crowded with tourist traffic, so I don’t think friendly to the 2nd act opener. If it would be at all possible I would love it in the New Amsterdam 😊 but that ain’t going to happen. I do agree the Shubert is probably the best bet, with the Majestic as a backup. ALSO I could see the Lunt-Fontanne if Sweeney ends its run towards the end of the year, that area around the theater is fairly calm and you have access to the Marquis breezeway and Shubert alley if you really wanted to do a walk about for the act 2 opener. The Lyceum and (the gorgeous) Belasco are also contenders if the Lunt and the Palace are too large of a house.
As soon as me and my friend left the theatre we said 'this is going to broadway'. I do think at the moment through a lot of high praised newer Broadway shows are the shows that are more on the positive light hearted side whereas over in the UK it's more the stripped back grittier stuff. That being said the Patti lupone revival of sweeny todd years ago was pretty stripped back and gritty and it did well on Broadway.
I thoroughly enjoyed your review and looking forward to seeing it when it comes to Broadway. The only reason I don't think it will be at the Hudson Theatre is its seating capacity. It's less than 1,000 seats. I think they'll look for a venue with a larger seating capacity.
Mickey Jo - I keep forgetting to ask you. Do you know if there has been - or will be - a cast recording of this amazing show? Surely Nicole will record one?
Just hope it gets another west end run even with a different cast, i loved this cast but the production by itself would be enough to want to see it again
What if they pull a Sweeney Todd and only do 7 performances a week? Also predicting this will be at the Hudson! It would also play beautifully at the Vivian Beaumont but seeing how that’s Lincoln Center owned I don’t see it happening. But what about the Broadway Theater? It’s a huge venue with a side corner!
I think....the Alternate will be cast for the same reason why donna murphy was bette midlers Dolly alternate - "mum" aka being a new mum or mum with young kids who dont want to take on full time role
I’ve heard speculation that Lea Michele might be in the mix as either the alternate or as a replacement Norma when the time comes. Some have said that it’s unlikely she’d be interested in doing any role only once a week, but she missed a lot of performances in FUNNY GIRL as her run in that progressed and, whatever it is that’s going on in her life that kept her missing performances, it would be a lot easier for her to show up once a week than 8 times a week. And audiences who’d want to see her would have a better shot at doing so.
i don't think it true that she missed a lot of performances. there was one isolated week when her son was in the hospital which is pretty understandable. she was amazing in Funny girl but she is what....35? it seems wildly inappropriate for her to play a faded star no longer in her prime. Glad you finally brought it up because its all i was thinking about as you were speaking, LOL. She is absolutely a name in the UK and absolutely not one in the US. Like do we know who she is? Sure. Do we watch things because shes on it? No. I'm sure that all of her solo success was UK/Australia based. Which is why I found it curious when you mentioned that she had pull with the production to bring the cast over. Could be to protect her here as it would be drag and drop? Because bringing the show over with just her (as a marquee name) makes no sense to me. They must be betting on the performance/production as a whole to create the necessary buzz to be a success.
I'm sure I'm in the minority on this, but I'm personally not excited about seeing this production. I saw the orig. Broadway production of Sunset Blvd w. Betty Buckley & found her performance rapturous & the set design spectacular, but didn't think much of the rest of the show. Apart from the two hit songs, I thought the score was too sing-songy & a snooze. And as far as this new production goes, I think 'stripped-down' versions of shows are too gimmicky & easy awards show bait. However, people seem to find them interesting & I think between the acclaim that it's received in London, combined w. Scherzinger's high profile from the (dumb but) highly-rated TV show The Masked Singer, it will be a hit.
I agree. A big part of the fun of a Broadway show for me is the glorious, magical set design and elaborate costumes. I get that many people find that old-fashioned, but, for me, that is the experience I want when shelling out big bucks for a show.
@@emhu2594 Now that the marquee is up, ads are around town in subway stations, on buses, etc. & the cast are starting to make the media rounds promoting the show, I admit it's starting to pique my interest... lol
I think you're correct about it opening on Broadway in the Autumn. But November?? No. That's too late - almost Winter ! Lol. Especially if it's a 12-week run, an end of September start would be best.
I’m very intrigued to see how they are gonna do the act 2 opener on broadway because the people in Times Square are probably less kind then the London people
You must not be very familiar with Broadway. First of all...Why would they be in Times Square? Unless they were at the Winter Garden, which I HIGHLY doubt, but even then....There's no theater directly in the middle of Times Square. They will more than likely be on a side street. On top of that, there are outside performances in NYC all the time. (Including ones in Times Square, actually.) Ham 4 Ham is the main one that comes to mind. They performed outside of the Richard Rogers on a regular basis and there was always a crowd there to see it with security guards and people directing traffic. Yeah, NYers can be rude, but when it comes to something like this, it will draw a crowd the same way as it does in London.
@@Kristine_202 what i mean is that even where most of the bway theatres are located there is not a lot of people and not a lot of room for people with cameras
I know this production has been widely praised, and Jaime Lloyd did wonderful things with the Broadway production of "A Doll's House," but do we really need another Broadway revival of this just seven years after the last one?
Timing really doesn't seem to matter with these things. They're talking about another revival of Gypsy when there have already been two Broadway and one west end revivals within the last 20 years.
i'm shocked it is coming to broadway since it was broadway in 2017 you can't beat Glenn Close. for me Palace, Majestic and Marriott . scaled back versions of musicals where the sets are minimal... what you your opinion? The music may may be great, but the glamour.. the theatrics, and the showmanship; which set 'musicals' for the common man apart from operas? Case in in point... I had the privilege of seeing 'Love Never Dies' in London. It was boring.. scaled back and not the physical 'splash' that the original Phantom was. I was then in Sidney where I saw their production of 'Love Never Dies'. The physical/ visual 'POW' was amazing. They did not hold back. Lyrics were great, but the visual impact was 10x the London production. Some shows lend themselves to minimal theatrics.. i.e. Chicago .Others, built their reputation on theatrics... Phantom. A scaled down version of Sunset... with more blood... does not sound appealing. your thoughts?
@@emhu2594 Maybe you should have seen the movie first. It's a masterpiece and I just don't get what is so corny about a turban, given the time the story takes place in!
I saw the West End production and was disappointed. After seeing Glenn Close as Norma Desmond on Broadway there’s no comparison. No sets, no costumes, it was all about the music.
I feel like a lot of people here on the US know who nicole is but I don’t feel like she is a big draw. I would be interested in seeing it because (and this may be controversial) i find it a bit challenging to think of her believable as a fading actress no longer in her prime….
Watch it and make a judgment. Many naysayers like you became aysayers after watching the show . You might be surprised how this show became the best show in the West Rnd in London during its run . There was a unanimous critical acclaim this show generated. To see is to believe you will be entertained in a very emotional way . See you all in Broadway don’t rob yourselves of the chance to witness a a truly artistic feat .
By "here" do you mean the US or the UK? I don't know how to compare her ability to draw tickets on either side of the pond but I think she has a more recognizable name/face in the mainstream than many seasoned Broadway leads just by having a career outside of theatre alone.
Nicole still has cult gay following hahaha. Its true though. And technically, she has a more recognizable name than a lot of the celebrity castings in broadways in recent seasons
By the United States version, do you mean the original production which transferred from London? Just like this production is about to do, it's opening on Broadway later this year.
@@MickeyJoTheatre No I haven't. I don't want to be mean to Sherzinger, who is quite a specimen for ( I will not ask her age), but the whole point of Norma Desmond is the fading beauty clasping to her youth and how utterly tragic that is. Sherzinger is not a fading, tragic beauty, but who knows, maybe she can convince me if I ever watch her perfomance.

& the cast are starting to make the media rounds promoting the show, I admit it's starting to pique my interest... lol
Imagine Patti doing the Mondays...
American here. Don’t think any non-theatre fans would recognize NS’s name at all. Also Jeremy Jordan is the first person I would cast as Joe.
I think you're correct about it opening on Broadway in the Autumn. But November?? No. That's too late - almost Winter ! Lol. Especially if it's a 12-week run, an end of September start would be best.
My hope is Jessica Vosk for the Norma alternate.
Jessica Vosk for Norma please and thank you!!! 🙏
Sunset Boulevard is returning to Australia in May starring Sarah Brightman. Not sure if the production will be the new staging.
manifesting Jessica vosk as the Norma alternate
mandy gonzales alt norma would be NEXT level omg
I know this production has been widely praised, and Jaime Lloyd did wonderful things with the Broadway production of "A Doll's House," but do we really need another Broadway revival of this just seven years after the last one?
Yes, it is extraordinary
Timing really doesn't seem to matter with these things. They're talking about another revival of Gypsy when there have already been two Broadway and one west end revivals within the last 20 years.
Idina Menzel as Norma alt.
HURRAY
Untill yuor last video I had never heard of her....
i'm shocked it is coming to broadway since it was broadway in 2017 you can't beat Glenn Close. for me Palace, Majestic and Marriott . Maybe Circle In The Square, Where Kimberly or Some Like It Hot theatres. Nicole only known as a pop singer in the USA her popular went way down. Who's Tommy musical will be in the Nederlander theatre. Back to the Future tickets being sold until December 2024. Wicked, Avenue Q, and Hamilton opened in summer or early fall. Everybody is excited for The Notebook.
Julie Benko was on Thursday and people
scaled back versions of musicals where the sets are minimal... what you your opinion?
STEPHANIE J BLOCK PLEASE.
My prediction: American critics will love it, American audiences will hate it. Great opening of the video btw.
@@emhu2594 A bit different? It's very different and this show is all about the melodrama! Have you seen the movie?
@@emhu2594 Maybe you should have seen the movie first. It's a masterpiece and I just don't get what is so corny about a turban, given the time the story takes place in!
I saw the West End production and was disappointed. After seeing Glenn Close as Norma Desmond on Broadway there’s no comparison. No sets, no costumes, it was all about the music.
I have absolutely no rhyme or reason behind this, but hear me out: Lea Solanga as Norma Desmond
Am I crazy for wanting Lea Michele as the Broadway alternate?
I think it could be very "Barbra does Dolly Levi"
I mean people are still saying Scherzinger is too young - Lea could still play Betty tbh.
Yes; you are!
I’ll Skip It
Nicole is not a name here. The production is the selling point.
By "here" do you mean the US or the UK? I don't know how to compare her ability to draw tickets on either side of the pond but I think she has a more recognizable name/face in the mainstream than many seasoned Broadway leads just by having a career outside of theatre alone.
@@ThexImperfectionist The U.S.
Nicole still has cult gay following hahaha. Its true though. And technically, she has a more recognizable name than a lot of the celebrity castings in broadways in recent seasons
Looks more like 1984 dystopia & less 1950 Hollywood culture. Thanks. The United State’s version is far superior.
By the United States version, do you mean the original production which transferred from London?
Just like this production is about to do, it's opening on Broadway later this year.
Broadway can keep it. I hated the show. It so up its own arse
Norma has been miscast. Sherzinger is too beautiful to be normal. Too young. Norma Desmond should be tragic.
Did you see it, beloved?
@@MickeyJoTheatre No I haven't. I don't want to be mean to Sherzinger, who is quite a specimen for ( I will not ask her age), but the whole point of Norma Desmond is the fading beauty clasping to her youth and how utterly tragic that is. Sherzinger is not a fading, tragic beauty, but who knows, maybe she can convince me if I ever watch her perfomance.
