  • Talking about what I feel is the best piece of excavating equipment and a spotlight on my favorite. I talk with ‪@DirtPerfect‬ , ‪@DIRT-BOSS‬ and ‪@Digginok‬ to get their opinions on the usefulness of a backhoe in today's excavating climate. Plus this video happens to have a spotlight on my John Deere 310SE backhoe and why I came to admire the backhoe as the best choice for new start up excavating contractors, farmers and homesteaders.

Dyna-hoe was and is the best backhoe machine.the front and rear tire size is the same no tipping and bouncing, the hoe and stick are also better. The bucket works digging and moving more than a regular backhoe.,Dyna- Hoe is the best backhoe.

Hello from Long Beach Ca…… I spent 35 years owning and operating case backhoes. Started with a 580 C in 1977 and ended with a 580SM with 4wd, cab, 4 in 1, extension. I made an attachment (that reminds me of your log splitter) that would able me to turn all my buckets around to dig backwards. I took two case quick couplers and joined them to where one was opposite. This allowed me to tunnel under a building for inside pipe risers. I agree with diggingOK….the backhoe is the best all around construction tool. Thanks for your videos! Bob Hillman

Backhoes are great especially for some starting out My first Backhoe was a 580B. I drove it to each job I got until I could afford a truck and trail. Then I bought a 580C and and then a 580 D which I still have , I believe its a 1982 . I’m 70 now and still use it two to three times a week.I have used it in my Construction Business for 35 years doing anything under the sun. Digging , backfilling, setting walls and trusses, footings , waterlines septics, small ponds, driveways, clearing trees. all kinds of stuff

I will always love the backhoe! It is the first machine I ever operated at age 3. It was a John Deere 300 in 1973. My dad used to strap me in the seat with his belt so I wouldn’t fall out. This is where I learned the love of operating equipment and still have it I burning In me today at age 51. I have done so many crazy jobs with Backhoes that I even amazed myself! If it wasn’t for this machine I never would have been able to afford to build my house because I did side jobs with them every night and weekend to make money after work. I still own a 2002 John Deere 310 SG and never see myself getting rid of it!

Absolutely agree. Backhoe is very versatile. If your not a contractor doing daily work with your equipment and your using it on a homestead or for just a few side jobs backhoe is the way to go. Cheaper maintenance as well. Only one peace of equipment vs 2. I have a kubota m62 and love it. It gets into some pretty tight places and I am able to drop the hoe off and run my three point attachments behind it. It's a real Swiss army knife option as far as equipment goes.

The backhoe is a great piece of equipment. I used to operate a backhoe for a construction company I use to work for and I loved it. I was never real fond of a skid steer because I don't like the bucket being right there over top of me. Short story, I've seen a lot of people operate backhoes and skid steers and they get nervous when they automatic bucket leveler starts to level the bucket. And they will hold the lever or the pedal that they're raising the boom up and cause it to skip past the automatic bucket leveler now the level don't work anymore. I dumped a pile of rock down in the skid steer with me one day and this was before they start putting the glass doors on them . So I've been a little leery about skid steers after that not real fond of them. And yes I've seen them do that backhoe like that too. Now they're dumping dirt all over the hood of the backhoe. And the mini excavator that's a story for another day. But yes I love the hell out of a rubber tire backhoe. I think there are awesome machine and you can do so much with them you just have to take your time. 😀👍

Backhoe is my go to machine. I don’t have one and if I could get one it would be a very small one as I only have an acre and a half of land. It would also have to cut grass. Insight to why it needs to be on the small side. I have plans for removing bushes, putting in walkways and a driveway. I have trees to plant and fire wood to move. I do own a pickup and a one axle dump trailer that I have rebuilt 2x because of the amount of use. That’s it in a nutshell!😎 oh by the way I’m 66 years old and going strong. My Dad bought a JD 310E used from a rental company to add to his dump truck and tractor/box blade family. I came on board with him in 2013 and after owning a skid steer and mini x, we found that for us the backhoe and tractor are the only 2 machines we need for what we do. We sold the x, skid steer and JD backhoe and upgraded to a brand new Cat 416 in 2018. We love the JD backhoe but when we went to purchase, our local JD dealer salesman wouldn’t respond to us at all. Completely ignoring us actually. Not sure if he just thought we were to small to fool with or what, but CAT welcomed us with open arms. We are very satisfied with CAT and now sport CAT hats 😂. Still love the sound of your JD as it brings back many memories! I thoroughly enjoyed the video!

  • @jeff-hk8yk
    @jeff-hk8yk 2 года назад +4

I agree - the backhoe is a great all-in-one tool - especially when it has an extendible dipper and a hydraulic thumb, 4 wheel drive, and a cab with heat and A/C. The stabilizers really dig in and can allow you to level the machine and has much more digging force (crowd and bucket) than a mini excavator. The loaders can lift 5000 or pounds and the loader buckets are generally 1.3 cu. yds. Also they are able to cross trenches and lower or raise themselves using the combination of the front loader and extendable backhoe. They can self transport up to 25 mph or can be towed on a trailer behind a one ton pickup truck. Also lots of attachments are available for both the loader and the backhoe. When you learn how to use them they are like a swiss army knife. I use mine for many different jobs.

This video couldn’t of been made at a better time either. I’ve been tellin everyone I want a backhoe before the end of this summer for the little ls I have. We’re in a swampy area, and when I was in the city, I mowed lawns for side cash…. Since we moved out a little further I’ve been looking for what I can do out here, started noticing everyone’s in the swamp. I wanna get into yard drainage and see about drying some people out. We have a guy up here “French drain man” on RUclips that is awesome at that stuff, and I’m soakin up all the info he wants to share.

Backhoes have their place for sure but after having a couple I no longer have one. Maybe it's because I'm established and know what I need and what works best for me at least at the moment, things can always change. Right now I prefer a bigger mini-excavator and large skidsteer. You can pretty much buy a new skidsteer and new mini-excavator for close to the same price as a new backhoe. I can haul both machines on the same trailer and if I have a helper and need them both on the same job I'm making twice as much money in the same amount of time. Good video.

Around the tank farm the backhoe was the most used all around piece of equipment. The Case 580 series was used everyday and was the most versatile for our needs. Digging in the pipe manifold around lots of large diameter piping, electrical conduits, and hydraulic lines, plus swinging over gate vales was quite challenging at times, but it got the job done. A mini-ex was brought in on rare occasions, but the backhoe was our mainstay.

I own a construction company and we have backhoes, skid loaders and mini excavators. I will have to agree with dirt perfect! Every piece of equipment has its place on a job site. I will say that if I'm going on a job and have a choice I would grab a backhoe simply because of it's versatility. It's ground speed is faster than a skidsteer. However is space is an issue than it's to large and you will have to settle for a mini excavator. From my 15 yrs of construction experience you either see a backhoe on jobs or you see a mini and a skiddy. Great video keep up the great content

Ran em all. First choice to bring on any jobsite is a TLB. Can haul, dig, carry, drill, break, install forks, drive along the road (driven TLBs 30 miles on roads sometimes when couldn't afford a lowboy). But biggest money makers are excavators - just so damn powerful/economical for their size. Mini excavators and CTL are ridiculous - waaaayyyy too expensive for what you get.

I'm in your corner on the backhoe. I've had a small unit for years and use it for everything. There are machines that will do certain tasks better but none are as useful on a daily basis. I would like to own a mini ex for the ability to dig in tight spaces but when I buy again my next machine will be a bigger backhoe. You can't beat the versatility of one.

When I was looking at equipment to buy, most good backhoes (4x4 or not) were too heavy to haul around with 14k bumper pull trailers. Once you step up to a larger trailer, the whole CDL comes into play, etc. This is why I went with a mini excavator. A backhoe in my opinion is not super good at anything, but can do everything. Nice video sir!

MY first piece of equipment was a 1982 MF 50D . I don't have it anymore (I do miss it), but I still wanted to replace it for personal use. Now I have JD 3039R with a 385a backhoe. I wanted the tractor with attachments for around my property. You always say "and if I'm lucky I will see you again" Truth is we are all lucky, as well, that you take the time to edit and post. Thank you again.

I agree, backhoe is a Swiss army knife it can do almost anything. Are there better tools out there for specific tasks? Yes, but unless you are blessed with lots of money to buy 2-3 different machines and a place to keep them a backhoe is a perfect machine. Our neighbor bad a 310jd and a 71 f700 ford dump and that is what I grew up around and that started my love for equipment

On our farm we have a skid steer , backhoe and dozer. The skid steer gets used the most followed by backhoe but they are used for different jobs that one can’t really replace the other. On the list of needs is a excavator which hope to be getting in next couple years. But again it won’t replace any of the others just speed up fence line clearing. Always enjoy your videos. Thanks

Good video as always, but the bigger debate I see is skid steer vs mini (8000# or less) when you own a tractor already. I've got a tractor and mini and have yet to find myself in a situation where I wished I had a skid steer...but I have a farm and don't have a business in construction. Take care and nice collab.

Thanks so much. Yes, that's a good debate also. I don't think you necessarily need a skid loader unless you're doing a fair bit of dirt work or other specialized chore. Thanks for watching!

I have had backhoes and currently have a mini ex. They are all great. They’re the same and completely different at the same time. I prefer the backhoe for getting to jobsites close to home. No need for a trailer. I prefer the mini ex for the low ground psi and the ability to turn 360 degrees. The best thing is to own both.

Nice video!! I have a mini-ex that I started my business with. My next piece will be a skid-steer. But I guarantee that in the future it will be a backhoe. I used to work for a public utility company and we had a 580 case super m, and three mini-excavators. I remember riding that backhoe all over the county because the minis wouldn’t dig the rock that we run into here in Northwest Pa. the 4 in 1 bucket made short work of road cleanup to when working in the streets. Normally after using the backhoe all you needed was a broom and dust pan. Keep up the great videos!!!

Love seeing the old home footage of the IH backhoe at work. Your 310 backhoe is the same year as me...pretty cool! It's hard to beat an industrial tractor/backhoe/skip loader if you are looking for a heavy all-around machine (aside from a skid loader). As a young kid I spent a lot of hours riding on a series of Ford 445 industrial 4x4 loader tractors (not dedicated backhoes like the Ford 555 series, but similar in size and build). My uncle was a landscaper for 40 years and he relied on the 445's as well as his JD 318 for a lot of jobs (landscaping, hardscaping, construction, farming, and snow removal). Those tractors made him a lot of money over the years. He still uses them frequently around the farm to this day. The 445's are small but nimble and can go pretty much anywhere with 4WD. Plus the little 3 cylinder diesel is a bulletproof engine with lots of torque. I sell Kubota tractors for a living but much prefer an older Ford or Deere loader tractor for loader work.

That's cool stuff Michael. I love hearing how people came up through the ranks and got to be equipment junkies like I did. I've also heard really good things about all the old Ford industrial stuff. Everyone always raves about how they were so good for their time. And as you said, even still today! Really appreciate you watching and commenting!

Hey Neil, love your videos. I officially started into excavation about 4 years ago. I did choose to go mini/excavator, because I wasn't always local, and to have a backhoe big enough to do the work I wanted to do was more than I could tow, and the other machines were much easier to transport by trailer without a cdl (which I got last year). I certainly think that backhoes are great for local work, or work in areas with more room, as any farm most likely would be. I did buy newer machines to cut down on downtime, but I'm paying the price (lots of monthly expenses). Thanks, and keep up the good work!

If you are starting out or want a property machine then backhoe every day. Can do most things excavators and skid steers can do, maybe a bit slower I admit but its one machine. Tight spaces I would be a bit concerned because they are not small machines but if its your place, where this is the will, there is a way to get it done. The only thing I would insist on is a thumb of some description. Can do so much more with a thumb.

Great video and subject. I have 40 hp John Deere with a hoe attachment , not a integrated tlb, and a Deere 35G mini x. The huge difference is moving along when trench digging. With the tractor, every time a move is made the riggers need lifted, bucket lifted and a move from the hoe seat to the tractor seat. The mini is effortless and a fraction of the time. And the reach is much greater on the mini. But, I'll never give up the tractor backhoe.

The backhoe is great, especially for the things you use it for.In my opinion tough,I would choose a mini excavator and a telescopic handler with a trailer.Moving around a backhoe in tight spaces in Europe is hard. First time I drove a New Holland Backhoe I almost took out the garage door of the workshop while turning to get out.The swing on that thing is huge when turning the steering wheel only a little.
