  • In October I visited the Equip Expo 2022 in Louisville, Kentucky and got to look around and test drive all the equipment. We had a great time in the Curtis/Artillian booth and hung out with lots of great folks.

The tractors are gonna take a while to get there but I could see the small electric mowers being very common for sub division yards.

    Keep going and don't worry to much about them!

    It’s like visiting Santa’s Workshop before you fill out your Christmas List!
    So many cool toys that a boy can hardly choose which one he wants under the tree… the most.
    Trent did a most excellent job of capturing the sights and sounds. He has truly proven to be an asset to DDD… he may become famous one day for his cinema work.
    I have been needing an answer for my chains. They hang on two hooks in my shop. One for ‘sharp’. The other for ‘needs to be’. But, if I take them off and head for the woods… then I spend more time untangling them than I do putting them on. I’ll own one of those chain boxes… because it’s going on the top of my Santa List!
    I’m not sold on electric automotive vehicles because of their impracticality. But, the usefulness of the cordless hand tools have warmed me up to battery powered equipment.
    Years ago, I lived in town. My neighbor had a 120V push mower. It was only 16” cut and way under powered. He had to cut his yard twice a week just to keep from bogging it down.
    One day his grandson kept blowing breakers. I watched from my patio as he constantly mowed a few feet then ran inside to flip the circuit breaker.
    The neighbor was at work. So, I walked over to see what the problem was. He told me that he’d cut the power cord and had to walk home and bring one of his dad’s extension cords to finish the job.
    I looked at the cord… it was two 50’ X 16Ga. pieces. One of them had a couple of splices put together with a wad of black tape wrapped around them. The other had the ground prong snipped off on the male plug.
    The cord that he’d cut was a 100’ X14Ga. So, I grabbed my 50’ X 14 Ga cord and plugged it into the light post receptacle on our property line. It was just long enough to finish the yard.
    I learned two things from that… electric mowers weren’t ready for prime time. And, my neighbor introduced me to shrink tubing for electrical repairs.
    That was several years ago and my prejudice against electric equipment has faded. Perhaps my fondness for battery powered hand tools and the relentless march of innovation have conspired to make me look seriously at these electronically powered options. Your snapshots gave me a few places to look.
    Thanks Neil… I will be shopping soon.

    • @scottsoper
      @scottsoper Год назад +2

      Plug in electric and battery electric are two different animals. A battery powered drill is a convenience: the electric drill on an extension cord will last a lot longer as a rule. Battery powered lawn mowers at this point in time are ether over expensive or not built so well and both will not last as long as a gas or diesel machine. My opinion is that you should keep your Prejudice against electric equipment that is bigger than an electric drill. My uncle sorta had an electric mower. He used a belt on a washing machine motor to start the worn out 3 hp lawn mower engine. Spin it long enough and it would get a little compression and start running!!

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Год назад +1

      I always enjoy your take on things. I think because I spent nearly a decade as a test operator for an agricultural auto steer tech company, I have an appetite for new tech and some patience for it to get developed out into a working product. I'm really glad to hear your take on it as someone who has slowly developed some level of acceptance.
      I'm not rushing out to buy a new electric tractor anytime soon, but I can see where they would be nice for residential neighborhoods once they get them figured out. I'm worried that too many folks are quick to say "those will never work because of x,y,z" yet that is not how innovation works. It will take some time but if the market does truly demands it, they'll get it figured out.
      Ironically, the Amish in our area appear to be the biggest consumers of electric tech. Many have big solar arrays to get their electricity and they can easily charge their batteries over time.
      It is very common to see wives out doing the yard work with their electric trimmers and leaf blowers during the day. They like them because the wives can run them easily and there is much less noise to disturb the horses and livestock.
      They all have electric bicycles around here too! So, it isn't a stretch to think there will be a demand for this stuff once it gets perfected... At least amongst the Amish communities! :)
      Thanks for the discussion on it. It will certainly be interesting to follow although I'll probably still be in my 30 year old tractor even when this stuff is commonplace!

    • @digdrivediy

      @@digdrivediy the Mennonites that built my barns owned every battery powered Dewalt power tool that you can imagine. I offered to string an extension cord for their use in charging their batteries. They said, “No thanks.” And, put a solar charger out in the field instead.

  • @scottsoper
    @scottsoper Год назад +2

    While there is a lot of buzz around electric powered equipment, the only real need for it is when states like CA mandate that you have to use it. Otherwise it would just be for special situations and there would be a lot less interest in it. That DeWalt Zero Turn fire says it all for me. Gotta have a Class D fire extinguisher for that kind of fire at about $480 at Home Depot.

    • @digdrivediy
      @digdrivediy  Год назад

      Yeah for sure. It will be interesting to see how it all plays out and if it all dies out. I have to admit though, I do like my battery operated tools. Kara uses the battery trimmer a lot and the battery leaf blower nearly every day on the porch.

    • @scottsoper
      @scottsoper Год назад +1

    I believe I have seen that system for robot mowing before. It has been a long time coming. I wish I knew more about it and right now I don't even know the name: unless Bob Cat bought them out. They were making the system to work on any zero turn and still retain the ability for a person to sit in the machine and run it. This system using a diesel mower is the best I have ever heard of and I would like to know more about it. It has great possibilities.

    • @digdrivediy

I had to do everything by feel and while you could likely master it over time, I really like being able to see the blade corners. That being said though, I do run the backhoe a lot without being able to see the cutting edge. I should have done a better job explaining my experience of the Minotaur. No, I didn't get to fly the drone. I used a different camera for this that I hoped would look like a drone though!

    I expect this mower will last several seasons with decent care. ruclips.net/user/postUgkx1VWTrayKBdCKAjzAcZ_Eg4dhHTae3LkN also recommend Also, I ran across the problem with it not starting the 2nd time I used it. There is a safety switch which is pushed in by the chute or mulching piece being attached to the deck. I took the cover off and it wouldn't start. Put it back on, no problem. It takes only a minute with 2 easily accessible wingnuts and no tools. This mower starts up first crank each time and it is a joy to use. It also mows in reverse by putting the key to the reverse area after starting and pushing in the triangular button. It will stay in reverse mode until you turn it off. All in all, for my homeowner needs, I really like this mower-and at 70 bucks a cut here in Miami, it's already more than 1/3 paid for itself in a month.
