Making Firewood Logs Fast! - F750 Dump Truck & Volvo Excavator Cleaning Fence Row

- Cutting logs from a fence row for future firewood, loading up a trailer load of split wood to last the week and then modifying the F-750 Dump Truck tailgate so that I can unload logs from the bed without jamming and getting stuck. We use Stihl chainsaws to cut logs, load them up with the Volvo EC55B Mini-Excavator, unload them with the John Deere 310SE Backhoe, stack logs into a neat pile with the John Deere 320 Skid loader and do all the hauling back and forth with the F750 Dump Truck and trailer. Stick around after the wood hauling as I do some shop work to fix the tailgate so that I can open and close the tailgate using a John Deere 755 compact tractor.
I channeled the styling of Andrew Camarata for the dump truck tailgate modification segment. I'm a fan of Andrew's channel and think he does a great job of documenting his work without it getting boring. Let me know if you like or don't like my version of DIY vlogging!

When I was doing excavating we had to drop the tailgate to dump stumps quiet a bit but the gate never went back up that easy!!! Great job from Michigan!!!

I had a similar dilemma as your tailgate on my International 4600. I mounted a electric winch to the front of the box and lowered and raised the tailgate with the winch. Worked awesome as i was in demolition and helped at the landfills when dumping.
That's a great idea Frank! I may need to pursue something like that if I find myself needing to raise and lower more when I don't have any machines to help. I don't know if I would have thought of that so thanks! Appreciate you watching that one till the end like that! Take Care!
I had too chuckle when you said you hate drilling holes Neil, especially larger ones. Just lately I seem to be confronted with needing larger holes drilled in different mild steel I'm working with. I got sick of it, so now I take the steel to the the local engineer and they just punch the hole in it which is a lot easier. They only charge a couple of bucks each hole. Saves me stuffing around with it, jamming drills and having to sharpen them because they are always blunt when I go to use them, even though they were sharp last time. It's a bit hard taking the tractor to the shop just for one hole though. Just take the fork I guess. I have subscribed a long time ago Neil and enjoy catching up with your videos. Maybe, I'd create a shorter, but just as strong (two-link) fig and leave it with the tractor. You are close to maximum reach, which makes it tough to unhook.

Get yourself a couple of Harbor Freight step drills, 1/2'' and 3/4''. Lube well like you did with your regular bits. They work best in mild steel if you drill a 1/4'' pilot hole first.

I have a friend that built his own outdoor boiler to heat his house and vary large shop. He made the door vary big and at grade so he could push tree stumps inside! If it burns, it goes in his boiler!

i am newly subscribed and heard about you on DirtPerfect's channel. I used to have a MF 50d, Case 450, C70 dump truck and a couple farm tractors & implements. I have since retired (I am a bit older than you) and the equipment was mostly for side jobs. Bigger stuff is gone, I do missed them, but watching your channel has been a joy to me. You need a magnetic drill, or a drill with a clutch. I drill alot of holes at work and either use a mag drill, and if I cant use a mag drill ill use a cordless drill and back the clutch off so it doesnt try to rip my arms off. Figure id rather burn up a drill than hurt myself.
You're right! I'd love to have a mag drill. Have you priced those things? That's why I don't have one :) My cordless drills that I have won't hold a 1/2" drill bit so that's why I was stuck with the old timer there. Maybe some day I'll get a drill sponsorship! Thanks for watching!

when i was in heavy equipment , I ALL WAY HAVE MY 315 LC CAT BOOM DOWN AND MY STICK CURL DOWN , WANT HIT ANY POWER LINE EITHER

I hear ya! The more steps I can do with a machine the longer I'll be able to keep burning wood. We bring all these logs back to the yard and then I've rented a firewood processor and go through a bunch of logs in one day. Adds a little cost but it sure is nice to make an entire year's worth of wood in about an 8 hour rental.

@@donmedford2563 I think I would keep the same height of 14' and 12' door. That has worked well for me so far. I would have made it twice as long if I could. I need more room for cold storage so that I could maintain more of my shop for working on projects. Right now I store too many things in there is all. Plus I have an area for band and studio and I would separate those areas from the workshop.

Great work Neil !!! I wonder if you drilled a few holes up by the top of the tailgate, to be able to just have a place to put the pins instead of the ground or pocket or other place that ends up being lost (which they are then transported to the magical land of the missing left socks 🧦)
That is a great idea!! Those pins do always seem to not be where I left them when it comes time to put them back in!

@@digdrivediy yeah I did that for my landscape trailers, just drilled a hole on each side of the tailgate, haven't lost a pin and cotter key since.

I gotta pretty good deal on this truck for sure. It has been a bit of a fixer upper though too, but still worth it. I was fortunate to "accidentally" find this one as I wasn't even looking for one though, just knew it was a good deal. They are out there you just need to be ready to pounce when they pop up. @@digdrivediy I can tell a big difference from the old to the later ones. You obviously put in a great deal of thought and effort. I have tried to record a few things and man does it take extra time. I enjoy a channel that is real and has family and gives me a better picture of who you are and what you are about.
You have talked about your shop and done a few house projects, but I would still like to understand a bit more of the property history and buildings. Like the block shed. Seems in an odd spot and maybe should even get knocked down, but I’m sure it is hard to give up storage space….even though you have a lot. Also curious about the little building at the end of and between both driveways.

Well thank you very kindly! I topdress with what we call #9's here in Indiana. They are about 1/2-3/4" sized, washed stone that doesn't have any powder. They look really nice when graded up. I do all my maintenance with a 5' pull type grader box that you can see in many of my other videos. It does a great job of always making it look like I hauled in fresh stone! I have found the best way to put it up is with the bed up. I lower it down when there is firewood in there and it has been working pretty good although you've had some good suggestions. Hey B&K. Unfortunately I don't have that 1 ton any more. Kinda miss having it around having invested a lot of blood, sweat and tears into that thing but I've been using this bigger truck more often. I had them both together for about 6 months and found that this was more suited for hauling the bigger equipment and therefore the F350 just sat around more and more. I was very hesitant to sell it but couldn't justify having both. Now that this one has proven its worth I plan to fix it up a little more and make it look nice so stay tuned for that in the future. Thanks for the question and for checking the out this video, I really appreciate it.

U ARE WASTE TIME DOING ALL OF THAT / ALL U NEED "C - CHANNEL ON THE REAR TAIL GATE / THEN YOUR FORK SLID INTO C - CHANNEL
I used a length of chain to have some flexibility so as not to bind the fork with the top of tailgate. A C-channel would have worked well if I were perfect using that tractor but I'm not that good. The chain lets me be off "just a little". 😉
