I saw an interview with Clint, in which he described exactly this. Clint spoke about casting Gene Hackman - originally Hackman didn't want to be involved, saying "I'm tired of doing violent films". Clint implored him to reconsider, saying "if we do this right, we can make a powerful statement against violence". Four Academy Awards (including for Gene Hackman as best supporting actor) later...
I saw that and glad that he chose that route instead of the violence that is ALL OVER popular culture especially these last 10 years. It's making a generation of kids and young adults who think it's cool and manly to hurt people.
never thought of it in those terms before, but CGJ pretty much hit it right on the head. CE has got to be one of the FINEST actor/director/movie maker of our time.
Eastwoods done it all in westerns: Good guy Bad guy Good guy turns bad Bad guy turns good Anti-hero but i still WISH he'd finish his career in the genre that made him a superstar...80years old...90 years old, who cares dammit BE A COWBOY AGAIN CLINT!
I think that movie was Clint Eastwood's way of saying I'm getting older, the movies I did in the '60s I am not that man anymore. I feel it was a bit premature of him to do that as he's still making movies at age 87!
@@cienega7139 Clint has never stated he is Republican. He has stated that he is closer to Libertarian. And then there is the question of, why would you bring politics into someone's taste in films? If he doesn't get it, then let it lie.

Also fosters a lack of empathy, for fellow human beings.

I wonder if Gooding drew upon Eastwood's movies for inspiration when he did Lightning Jack.
Unforgiven the title says it all it is a beautiful study of humanity
Fantastic breakdown.
Very impressive analysis. I'm not surprised.
Eastwoods done it all in westerns:
Good guy
Bad guy
Good guy turns bad
Bad guy turns good
Anti-hero

You might get your wish- Cry Macho is coming out soon.
Brilliant analysis
Unforgiven, my top 90´s film alonside Remains of the Day, Schindler´s list, Se7en and Goodfellas!
Spot on.
"Chuck Norris, never heard of her" Clint Eastwood
The "president of Cuba" is so articulate.
Bingo!
Nice interpretation.

good ol ben doyle
He was already on the path to redemption, but ruined it by going to kill those cowboys in the first place.
i thought the film was a statement about alcoholism, bill muny was only an evil man when he drank
Clint was merely showing that the anti-hero had feet of clay (not Superman). In the end it is just a movie designed to entertain...he achieved that.
I think Unforgiven is a little overrated. I can't quite get behind it.
i'd argue at this point it's underrated
You are just a Democrat hating on the simple fact that Clint is a Republican
