    I don't get it: Why use wings, when you already have sufficient lift/bouyancy? When not required for thrust, like in the case of the Manta Ray, wings indicate that the contraption needs them for lift, and being so much heavier than water is that large wings are required, is an inherently bad idea.

      The Manta Ray is designed for multiple potential missions. While detailed information is limited, it will perform intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance tasks, including undersea mapping missions. It might also be capable of mine-hunting and mine-laying. So, while it’s not designed primarily for carrying weapons, it does have versatile roles in detecting and countering enemy activities. It remains to be seen how these capabilities will be fully utilized in practice.

  • @TankR
    @TankR 5 месяцев назад +1

    Dollars to doughnuts it doesnt sit on the bottom (because of the suction effect when you lose buoyancy on one side of your vessel....ask a submariner). Itll probably deploy a cylinder capped on one end that it pushes into the mud, then pumps the water out allowing the ocean pressure to push it deeper into the mud. Platforms use this type of anchor all the time. Want your anchor back? Just pump water back into it and iit pops right out. However, that little water current energy harvesting flyer is pretty neat! Though one wonders why not just use an RTG..... Sure there wont be enough energy to charge and swim, but it can 'hibernate' and charge.... Also, what is its propulsion system supposed to be? Those 4 props on the wing tips? Itd be interesting if they tried magnetohydrodynamics again, but as I understand it that tech has too many issues to be reliable and grunt proof..... And why doesnt if flap its wings?!?! What was the point of all that research into how fish swim?!?!

    • @TankR
      @TankR 3 месяца назад

      @@llorttaf Honestly it does seem pretty pointless to have it ray like and just strap propeller tipped motors on the trailing edge.
      It feels like when stuff pops up on wish that is absolutely a material overrun or prerun of a canceled product design (Some company ordered a few prototypes and they ran off a bunch thinking it was going to be a thing...then wasnt). Like, this idea was floated in a spitballing meeting and people (media side, not development side) ran with it....
