As a fan of comedy you’ve gotta admire Vito’s commitment to a bit. He dressed up like a leather daddy and danced with a guy on a leash, moves up to New Hampshire and shacks up in flambé domesticity all because he was there, it was a joke.
I think they made the right choice by leaving it out. They May have been debating one which scene to keep. This or the mall scene. Vito’s black Eye was bc of a fight with Johnny in New Hampshire correct?
Cineranter, when are you going to make da video about my 47 year old brudda Billy? He was just a kid and you disrespect his memory by not honoring him.

Dude, that one episode where Vito is trying to not look at his watch and trying to manifest time passing quicker while at his handy man job, then when he finally looks at his watch when he was hoping it was lunch time and it was only like 9:30am. I had a job like that once and related to this so much. I basically had a job as a laborer in a commercial office building in the summer when I was in college. Like just random shit they needed done. Change door knobs, light bulbs, paint, replace toilet paper, mop, organize store rooms, like anything and everything, but most of it was just monotonous work and the day would drag so hard.
I am so deeply unhappy that no one has ever made the glaringly obvious joke that Cialis is first line treatment for pulmonary hypertension, and it really was his blood pressure medication all along.
Vito’s black eye lets us know the scene took place shortly after his fight with Jim. So it’s pretty early into his stay in NH. I think Tony wasn’t being very honest with him. They just wanted to get him back to Jersey. At no point was Phil ever calmed down about the situation, another sign Tony was lying to lure him back. Vito knows this. He only goes back because he’s running out of money.
If anything, this scene makes it much more clear that Vito knew Tony was bullshitting on the phone to get him. The look on his face just before throwing the phone to the lake makes itso obvious. What I dont get is: Vito had at least 200k hidden somewhere safe, possibly much more. And he knew the construction bussiness pretty well. He could have started his own construction company in another state far away, or in Canada or something. He did not have to work as a hard working blue collar labourer. He could even be a non-wiseguy criminal, running girls and meth. Or if he wanted to start a new life with a new identity with his family, he could have gone to FBI. I mean he had tons of options, instead of returning to Jersey, trying to get back in to the life. And Vito was not a stupid guy. He knew he would most likely get killed if he ever returned. I cant help but wonder if he was subconciously suicidal. I mean he went to a gay club in NY wearing a motorcycle outfit. And he did not even try to stop Sal when he saw him. Just think of Pussy killing the Elvis impersonator because he saw him with his FBI handler. Vito did nothing. He did not kill Sal, did not try to bribe him to keep him uiet, did not make up a story about why Sal was spreading rumours about him because he had a beef with him. Vito did nothing. And just think about what he said when he heard Eugene commited suicide.
On the deleted scene where Vito was on the phone with Tony and Silvio, take a look at the bruising around Vito’s eyes. This happened the morning after he got in a fist-fight with Johnny Cakes when they’d started to make out. Vito could also tell that Tony was bullshitting him about being able to assuage Phil. After this scene, we get to the part in the show where Vito went back to the diner to apologize to Johnny Cakes, and admit that he’d been hiding himself for too long. So that’s when Vito tried to settle into small-town New Hampshire.
To me, the biggest miss was never showing Johnny learning the truth about Vito. It would have completed the whole arc and could have been done in 10 seconds. It would have brought home how big a risk Vito took, coming out to Johnny, and how heartbreaking his decision to return to Jersey was.
That would've been too humanizing. That Vito was killed for being gay does not make him a good person. He abandoned Johnny for the same reason he killed that civilian when he was on the lam.... bc he's a pos with an inflated sense of self-importance. He killed My Fawtha. He humiliated Chris when the latter was very vulnerable, claiming Aide threw it at him, which, granted, was said to cover his tracks, but that kinda makes it worse. He dehumanized the woman Chris loved in front of their peers to cover up his own secrets, then talks down to the obviously hurt Chris, althewhile knowing that no one would respect the Captain of the Good Ship Lollipop if they knew the truth. He threatened Finn for months. He laughed when a JOKE about being gay sent a bottle through Little Paulie's eye. Yes, part of the genius of this show is that it made you sympathize with bad ppl, like Eugene, the very same man who hit LP, but Eugene was equally selfish, and only cared to escape the life when if benefited him more to leave it, just like Vito. And speaking of, why didn't Vito go to the FBI for protection? Because in his egotistical mind, he was dead set on returning to the life where he got to bully, harass, rob, cheat and kill without consequence. Johnny never finding out, and more specifically, never finding out FROM VITO, is exactly how it would go, which is why that's how it DID go.
Nar the vito living with the fireman was unneeded as it was idgaf bout the fanook lol it didn't fit with the rest ov the show just having him out of the show also the gay bar dressing up thing was wierd I no its entertainment but he was literally dressed like the biggest stereotype gay man ever
I think we all knew Vito was smart enough to sniff out a trap but also naive enough to think he was smart enough to convince Tony that coming back could work. Either way, he got himself into that mess by thinking he could parade around town doing what he did while being a member of a group he knew would never approve. Overall, his urges replaced his common sense and it cost him his life… which is a very human trait we all contend with on some level in our own little way.
Honestly, whether by greed (due to the money Vito brought in) or just not being as homophobic as the rest of the guys-I think Tony really would have been ok with him coming back if there was way he could do it without pissing off the rest of the crew. One theme was consistent- Tony was adamant it was going to be his decision how it was handled, whenever he finally decided to handle it.
"but also naive enough to think he was smart enough to convince Tony that coming back could work" - Um, he pretty much did convince Tony. He was Tony's best earner and Vito actually had a viable alternative plan. The only reason it didn't work was extreme pressure from the rest of the crew. It had nothing to do with Vito's intelligence. I think you need to go back and watch the show more closely.
@@orange555 I think you fail to realize that even though Tony may have liked the idea that Vito floated to him, his fragile ego would’ve won that battle and out of fear of being seen as soft or vulnerable, Tony would’ve clipped him regardless. But his method would’ve been far more merciful than ramming a pool cue up Vito’s ass as Phil had done. Those old school unwritten mafia rules Tony definitely would’ve prevailed in that situation. Vito was a deadman no matter what.
@@LostInBoston617 The only reason Tony would've clipped Vito was because of outside pressure from his crew and outside families. He would've been perfectly happy to keep Vito away from everything and everybody with his cash flow. Tony was never guided by mafioso principles - not really (even if he wanted or pretended to be) - Tony was always first and foremost guided by money. It's as simple as that.
I think that it was early on in his stay. Definitely before he actually started to build a life for himself. Clearly his wife was involved in brokering the meeting, but Vito understood that it was a trap. I think it fits in well with Tony saying later that Vito should have just stayed where he was.
Vito was still the stealthiest character on the show. Jackie Jnr never saw him coming. And he had been hiding his gayness for decades. Very sly for a big guy.
My favorite Vito scene is after he kills Jackie Jr. There’s a moment in Ralph’s club where the camera pans to him, and he’s miserable over what he’s just done. It’s one of the rare moments in the series where we see a guy show remorse & regret after a murder.
It was his cousin after all, those guys were ruthless, mobsters, if you become a problem or even if they think you might become one they send the people closest to you within the crew to take care of business, your best friend, your cousin even your own brother.
They couldve deleted this scene intentionally, maybe even outright replaced it with the scene at the mall, to further emphasize the addicgion those in the life have, and how even when they have a clean getaway out AND returning would put them in mortal danger, they still can not resist the temptation.
I think they deleted it because they wanted to make Tony sympathetic. Tony wasn’t going to scour the earth looking to kill Vito just for being gay. He wouldn’t have approved it if Phil hadn’t made a big deal it. Had Vito just stayed in NH and kept quiet and not drawn attention to himself he would have been fine.
Wait, i could have _swore_ i remember (in the show) the part where tony mentioned specifically the words "taking an unexplained powder", and the line about having another kid to show everyone vito knows where to stick little vito (?) Or maybe those lines were in the show, but were also in the deleted scene? As in some of the lines from the deleted scene were kept for the final take/the show I guess (then again i can't remember if i had seen this deleted scene or not) because i have seen a handful of deleted's, so idk.
I could swear I heard at least some of the dialogue , too. Perhaps I watched the deleted scene years ago and just made the mistake of falsely remembering it being from the aired episode, though.
I was convinced by Vito throwing the phone, that he was not convinced to go back to New Jersey because of that conversation with Tony. Glad they deleted that.
Vito's story/arc is one of my favorites. It really hit that it's not a choice, Vito wants nothing more than to be himself but he's at war within himself over it. Sad and realistic arc.
The deleted conversation most definitely puts a certain slant on things, but it also kind of weakens the plot line that Vito was drawn like a flame back to the Mob Life. The whole Sopranos sub-theme of what is real and what's not being blurred is a bit weakened by it, so I can see why they'd cut it. It would have potentially taken the series into more of a soap opera lane, which was not really going to work long term.
I think that scene is an alternate to the mall scene. David Chase was notorious for changing his mind and doing reshoots, sometimes even replacing an actor and having to reshoot every scene they were in with a new actor. I actually prefer this scene over the mall one, it does make things a little smoother
I have a weird relationship with this show because as much as I hate Tony Soprano as a person. (and believe me I really *REALLY* hate him as a person) Even after all these years I am still intrigued by him as a character. I've never come across a show that I was both disgusted and enamored by at the same time.
Try living a lifestyle where the time restraint of a true "9-5" just isn't there. When your lifestyle is that way conforming to a "have to he there" schedule is dam near impossible for some people. I had to change careers and man the schedule was much tighter. I knew this coming in, but the reality is much more difficult than you would think. Then try to imagine the glits and glam lifestyle of a mobster to that of a carpenter. I can kinda understand Vito going back if he had that cut out scene talk with tony
I agree with you about everything except the importance of the scene, because in the scene Tony gives away that it's a trap. "What about Paulie?" is crucial, and the answer informs Vito that it's a trap, which is why he ends the conversation and throws the phone in the lake.
I guess but you have to think it all the way through. Being a carpenter is boring and not a lot of money but you don’t have to kill anyone, no risk of jail time and less chance phil will kill you
The path taken to Vito as gay was a move to stay relevant to the times. If this show was made in the 80s it would not even had come up on the back of a napkin. But in the 2000s the times were such as to impose these paths and The Sopranos answered: there's no way a gay mafioso could be accepted in that life, no matter how much he earned on the outside. In prison (like Tony told Dr. Melfi) you get a pass.
I love the constant injokes you've masterfully weaved into this. This is what a true Soprano's channel is like, not like that glorified HBO clipper Borko.
Its weird how these mobsters on the run seem to stick around in East Coast states. 50 states in this country, plenty of them got better weather than New Jersey and there are some that are very cheap to live in.
Tony wanted to help Vito. As the boss he had to make Vito feel secure and as far as Phil goes Tony can’t let Phil think another guy calls the shots about his people. Where Tony failed was not having a sit down with third parties of the same financial interest and Phil to let Phil know to back off his people.
Absolutely. Vito was an earner and that's what Tony cared about. He seemed fairly indifferent about Vito's ass muncher status, although it brought shit and infighting to his organization.
I don’t think Tony could have protected Vito forever. Too many in that life would have wanted him gone. Someone would have eventually made it look like an accident
Its simple, once they deleted the scene they instead shot the mall scene, both scenes would not have existed at the same time...its one or the other...when Tony talks to Vito in the mall thats the first time he talked to Vito since Alegra's wedding reception...also once they deleted the scene where Tony and Sil talked to Vito on the phone they added the scene where Silvio talks to Marie Spatafore by himself............... "That one aint getting laid"
This scene wasn't deleted. I have this season on DVD. Tony asks Vito's wife to leave the room when the call first comes through. Just as she's about to head upstairs, she glances at Tony as if she knows his intentions aren't to help Vito. There is also some great comedy the way Tony and Sil listen to her walk up the stairs and hear her shut a door, as well as the way Tony gets pissed when Vito hangs up the call.
Too bad they cut that scene out of the Sopranos. It makes a lot more sense why Vito returned. Without it, it seemed like it was just a cheap way to way of allowing Phil to kill him. That scene clears it up a lot. Great job on posting this I had never seen that.
Vito should have just gone home that night n continued life normal. It would have been Sal Iacuzzo's n his buddys word against his and most people would take Vito side cause he was made and a captain..he raises a threat if they continue to slander his name and its done...I think Vito realized it's a trap when Tony said Phil is coming around and appreciates the situation. Knowing Phil he figured that was BS..
Agree. Vito was Tony’s best earner at that time. Vito could have said he dropped something in the security guards truck and was searching for it. 😂 His move to New Hampshire was a bone head move but he was scared. His heart became a “lump” for his family and he has no work ethic due to those no work jobs. I think I would have kept in the deleted scene and taken out the mall scene. But I’m not David Chase now am I? Live Free or Die is one of my favorite episodes. I think this story line was brilliant and I’m glad Joe Ganicolli suggested it to David Chase. The real question is was the pool cue chalked or not? 😂
@@jeboccuzzi10 🤣🤣🤣 Poor Fat Dom went to his grave with the answer to that eternal question. The thing is that security guard thing prob wouldnt have even come into play if Vito didn't run away. They started all talking about it cause they couldnt get a hold of Vito n gossiping n then Meadow overheard. Vito coulda nipped it in the bud. Hes a come from behind kinda guy...
I think this was supposed to be the first convo and got cut for the mall scene instead. Vito getting assurances of his safety would've undercut the theme of his addiction to the lifestyle of the mob

Those lines were in the show, it tripped me out too. I think they just cut out some bits
The powder line simply means to leave in a hurry
When Tony said that life has a way of chipping away at a positive outlook…damn, I felt that
I think it's very true! I try everyday to remain greatful and positive but Life will eat away at those things if you aren't intentional about it.
@@kingndanorth Yeah same
I was convinced by Vito throwing the phone, that he was not convinced to go back to New Jersey because of that conversation with Tony. Glad they deleted that.
Right then where would the story go? Vito might have stayed in nh a happy ending for him but not much drama
Vito's story/arc is one of my favorites. It really hit that it's not a choice, Vito wants nothing more than to be himself but he's at war within himself over it. Sad and realistic arc.
He came back to give his son tips on being a Puerto Rican hoo-er.
CineRanter just won't let this go ! IT WAS A JOKE !!!! 🤣
(and believe me I really *REALLY* hate him as a person)
Even after all these years I am still intrigued by him as a character.
I've never come across a show that I was both disgusted and enamored by at the same time.
the “in other words, he’s a FAAAAA-“ line knocked me out lmao that’s def my friend group’s humor, and we’re a basket of fruit ourselves
"Basket of fruits" I'll defly remember that phrase for my friend group too
Very good, Sar. You really did the needful with this analysis, Sar.
Was that deleted scene later added to the DVD version of that episode?
Excellent channel, love your videos. I am a huge Soprano fan. May I ask where did you got this clip? DVD extended edition?
Being a carpenter is boring and not a lot of money but you don’t have to kill anyone, no risk of jail time and less chance phil will kill you
“one of the mist braindead moves in the entire show”🤣🤣🤣
What could vito do? Johnny cakes wasn't Italian no matter how much sausage was made in house.
Waa based on a true story. Ended similarly in real life too.
Vito left his shinebox back in Jersey.
Vito came back because he missed Phil like a brother-in-law
I absolutely love your content. You always make me laugh
Yeah, homophobes always find other homophobes hilarious
“He must have had some corn holing urges” hahaha
Vito missed the sound of Finn pissing like a race horse
"..cornholing urges.." 😂 superb humor 😂😂
In the deleted scene, i think Tony was betting he could contain Phil's response and so he told Vito that Phil was in check.
That scene wasn't deleted
I really appreciate how this guy works in a well known quote every 45 seconds or so
After 20 years in the can Phil made sure to do his due diligence. He made sure the pool cue was chalked for the 3 ball in Vito's side pocket!
Tony! Why did you let me watch this video?!
@David_Scatino let's not forget that if you would have won, I would be the one singin' the blues.
@@tonysoprano1884 hey. You remember the time borko put up that video of your mind reading game?
Lol. The Sopranos went all gay Hallmark with the Vito in New Hampshire arc.
He did 20 minutes in that closet not a peep
Dude you are fing hilarious! Your jokes are great. Thanks for all your hard work.
Dude couldn’t handle a 9-5 is the real reason
The thing that keeps me coming back is the joy i find in listening to your fruity accent saying all these east coast expressions
Finally a non-moron making Sopranos videos. This was also very funny.
I think he came back because that security guard 'owed him one'
Is it like the old joke, He left his brother’s behind
I think that whole story line was better off deleted... I mean come on, maybe an episode, but a whole motherfucking season?
the script was particularly good on this one bro nice job
One of the best explanation I have heard on RUclips: “corn-holing urges”.
"that's the thing with the gays - living in the closet makes them devious" 🤣🤣🤣
1:10 it's alright, you're British.
You can say it and just mean cigarette.
Man you guys are so desperate to disparage gay people.
Tony was really considering keeping Vito because of the money that Vito brought in from the construction rackets.
he came back cus he couldnt find construction sites in new hampshire to give bjs at.
He finally became the butt of Mafia justice.
@1:20. Pitchers can be gay also. You’re gay wether you pitch or catch as two men
Too bad they cut that scene out of the Sopranos. It makes a lot more sense why Vito returned. Without it, it seemed like it was just a cheap way to way of allowing Phil to kill him. That scene clears it up a lot. Great job on posting this I had never seen that.
I think the hesitation Tony gave Vito, when Vito asked about Phil, was Tony knowing Phil was going to kill Vito if Vito came back
ya think??
Vito came back for the DYSENTERY!!!!!
The phone call obviously took place either before or after he talked to his kids
lol no shit
@@EnjoySackLunch I just realized the stupidity of my comment lol…. 😂…… I think I meant “immediately before or after”
I think this was supposed to be the first convo and got cut for the mall scene instead. Vito getting assurances of his safety would've undercut the theme of his addiction to the lifestyle of the mob
20 years he waited to come out of that closet!
At around min 2, you say vince when you meant to say vito.
Vito returned bcoz he hoped the mob would admire balls as much as he did.
Phil: 20 minutes in the closet
