PREACH. oh my god that was the best college advice video I have ever seen from anyone! And ironically enough when I was in 8th grade NYU was also my dream school and then I researched it and... nope. Now I'm a senior in hs and I literally can't wait to get acceptance letters

I totally agree with your advice about giving teachers specific things to highlight! Include examples of situations in which they've worked with you and saw you shine in your recommendation request letter. I've had professors thank me for reminding them of those details - it makes their job easier and the letters better! Another suggestion: write thank you notes to your professors for taking the time to write your recommendation. Nice video, Meghan! This college advice series idea is cute!
It's worth it in the end. College is like high school with no boundaries, amazing parties and you get to study something you're actually interested in.
The common app is not only for private schools, there are many state schools on there as well, such as University of Delaware, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Tennessee, South Carolina, Massachusetts, Maine, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, and North Carolina.
MORE TIPS/ADVICE
5-7 schools are a solid amount of to apply to
many schools send out FREE applications through emails and normally they acquire your email address through College Board and the PSATs --which asks for your email
Early Action applications are something to take advantage of...this means the deadline is early (normally november) and you find out if you've been accepted by december or january.
Rolling Admission schools should also be applied to earlier rather than later too.

Great advice! But just a word for incoming high school seniors, the Common App is not only used by private schools, it is used by both public and private. And also, make sure that you check the school's prerequisites BEFORE you apply! It would suck to apply to a college that you really like and then find out that you don't have the required classes under your belt. The app process sucks, but just stay on task and once those acceptances roll in it's the bets feeling out there! (:

The Common App actually goes live in August I believe. You'll definitely want to look at it before October, especially if you're planning to apply Early Decision or Early Action to any schools!
SOOO TRUE about applying for specific majors! i know that around where i live, PA for reference :), youre more likely to get in undeclared!

Yeah I agree, I'm attending a community college in the fall; and between the waiting time for financial aid, and waiting for the school to get back to you. Plus, I needed to send my transcripts and request a date for the accuplacer test. So it was stressful; so I can just imagine state schools and universities :X

As a senior that just graduated high school, I really wish I had this advice when I was in the process of applying to colleges. Your advice is fabulous and so on point. And the best thing you said was definitely to not get your heart set on a school. Please continue to do these videos, you're awesome Meghan!

I'd definitely consider it. Talk to your counselor at your high school about it to see if it's right for you. A lot of people want to go away for all 4 years, but there was no way I could afford that without going into debt.

I'm about to enter college and would love to see a video from you talking about how you organize your makeup in college since its a much smaller space.
I graduated college this year, so I did this a looong time ago but here's my biggest advice: Start everything over the summer. Seriously. If you can get everything in early (like as soon as the apps go up) you will save yourself insane amounts of stress and it will make you look more attractive to schools. Trust me.
It's my summer before my senior year. This is gonna help me a lot!

The Common App isn't just for private schools, but most large state schools choose to have their own application. There are also private schools that don't use the Common App! (Just some information for people watching who might not be as familiar with the college application process!)
I agree I'm from VA and I didn't know what the commonapp was either. It's really not that intense maybe cali is harsher.

I'm in 10th grade, but my school pushes college from freshman year, so I've heard all the typical advice, but this is so much better than anything else out there. The whole other application thing? ABOUT COLLEGE APPLICATION FEES:
You can contact the colleges and if you tell them that you are really interested but can not pay for the application fee ( or if you qualify for free and reduced lunch let them know that too) and a lot of times they will waive the fee.

You should also use parchment(dot)com to send your transcripts if your school uses that. It's cheaper to send transcripts electronically, you can track when transcripts were sent and received, and it's easier for your HS to keep track of it.
PLEASE DO THE ACTING MAJOR ONE!!!!! That's what I'm doing when I get to college!!!
You will be totally fine! People tried to scare the crap out of me before I applied. My school counselor even told me I wouldn't get in to some of the schools I applied to and I got in everywhere I applied. The deadlines sound scary, but everything is so spread out that you don't feel overwhelmed. A lot of this you don't even need to worry about for a while. The essays are typically short because admissions doesn't have time to read a lot. Relax and don't be afraid to ask people for help.

The Common App is definitely for private schools only. For public schools you have to go to that specific school's website. But ALL PRIVATE SCHOOLS go through the Common App.
