Quincy Jones recorded this theme on an album of Mancini tunes. On the album, the theme was titled "Bird Brain" -- I always wondered if Mancini himself had any say about that title, but I don't suppose I'll ever know...
Would that there was an original soundtrack released of this with the original main titles music that was really there. It's my favorite Mancini theme in its' original form for solo trumpet/flugelhorn.
This is NOT the original main title music. The REAL original main title music has been replaced by this cue entitled BIRD BRAIN from later in the film. The original music is only on the original video releases of this film on ALLIED ARTISTS Video and the KEY VIDEO (CBS>FOX). It's a mighty shame as the original main title is as somber and beautiful piece as Mancini ever did. It inspired Diana Krall to record the piece with it's lyric on an album of hers.
Well, I just dug up my DVD, and this is the main title music on it. I originally saw the picture on The Late Show, circa 1975, and can no longer remember what the opening title theme was like, but something somber would definitely be more appropriate to such a heartbreaking story. I first heard the theme from Soldier in the Rain in 1966 on an album by Les and Larry Elgart. The LP is entitled Warm and Sensuous. It's one of the most beautiful and emotional songs I ever heard, and it's haunted me for years. When I finally saw the movie on DVD several years ago, I was disappointed to find this theme wasn't anywhere in the film. Why they would replace it is beyond me, but it takes away from the quality of the film. I can't find the Elgart version on RUclips, but there is a version from the composer, Henry Mancini, and another version from the Mystic Moods Orchestra. I would leave links here, but RUclips would probably not allow it, so you'll have to search them in the search box. The music is definitely worth hearing.
I saw this movie for the first time in 1976. Many good feelings for history and music... I can't forget it...
THIS WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL MUSIC USED IN THE MAIN TITLE THEY CHANGED IT ABOUT 25 YEARS AGO.

Wonder how many films took second billing in after this one?
Class but in this day and age I can't seem to locate the OST CD anywhere......Nightmare!

The song "Soldier In The Rain" by Henry Mancini is in the final scene of the movie.
At the beginning of the film there is "Bird Brain".
