If you did a series of visiting all the little camera shops in Japan I would watch the hell out of it. This camera shop reminds me a lot of my favorite camera shop in the US, "Alaskan Photographic Repair Service", up in Fairbanks Alaska. One man shop, tucked away on the second floor of the Fairbanks downtown indoor mall. He's been there *forever* and seeing his shop is worth making a trip up to Alaska.
Thanks for the video Bellamy, it's really great to see the masters from Kanto at work. Too bad the bloody Leica's nearly doubled in price over the last year and a half.
Blimey overnight the JCH RUclips channel became the de facto best film channel on the platform. What a treat to see these artisans at work repairing and customising cameras by hand! As usual so refreshing to hear from someone who actually knows about cameras rather than just an 'influencer'.
Wow, what a special place. Love they can do single coatings. I remember the first B&W photos I ever shot and developed myself using my dad’s old Yashica rangefinder which had a single coated lens. The negatives had a gorgeous tonal gradation to them.
I came across a chap with a painted M6 done in the "reporter" style which was done by Kanto and from them it's been an absolute grail of mine should he ever decide to sell it. Wonderful to see shops like this and I can sincerely say I hope that they stay around for decades and decades more to come.
@Eduardo Oropeza I guess it's pricey. CLA for mamiya 7 was 250$. Fixing the lens was 100$. But, bear in mind it's expert service. One of the OG kanto guys used to be a mamiya engineer. He's actually worked on the mamiya 7 so it felt safe in his hands :)
I was stationed at Tachikawa Air Force Base from 1966 to 1968 so know the area well. I loved to take the train into Shinjuku and The Ginza to visit camera stores. I also went to the main Tokyo train station then across the street to the Nikon store and also the Nikon repair center when my Nikon F bodies or Nikkor lenses needed service. Akihabara was also quite an interesting area, too.
I loved that guy doing the precision work at his bench with a phone next to him! I bet he loves it when that goes off mid job. Great video, really interesting.
Bellamy, I'm absolutely loving your new YT videos. This one is especially wonderful, a really rare treat that only you could manage to provide. Thank you so much and keep up the great work!!
I have only seen the place from the customer perspective in the tiny foyer they have. SO great to have a look behind the curtain. This is the single very best place on the planet you could bring your analogue camera to... sadly the turnaround time jumped from 6 to 9 months recently (at least when I spoke to them). Email responses could be quicker tbh... takes around 3-4 weeks to get a response. Amazing place anyway.
Ever since you posted about that M3 you had them overhaul and paint I have been fascinated by this place. Thank you so much Bellamy for giving us this tour. Maybe in the future I can visit with my own M3 and have them build it the way I want it. Keep up the amazing work with this channel!
JCH making a youtube channel might possibly be one of the only wonderful things to come out of 2020.
I am humbled. Thank you.
Absolutely, thought the same.
Besides Covid( and assoicated things)2020 wasn't to bad for me. I am one of the lucky ones.
This is like taking a 5-year old to Disneyland! Deeply impressed by Kanto’s beautiful work.
that shop is amazing - japan really is the GOAT for film photography
Bellamy, what cool place, thanks for taking us. Some amazing craftspeople there!
Glad you enjoyed it
Just fantastic stuff! Thanks for the tour Bellamy. Please do more videos like this.

Wow-precision is right!
My dream list to have my M6, FM2n and the lenses to be check and service by legendary Kanto Camera.
Wow, what a special place. Love they can do single coatings. I remember the first B&W photos I ever shot and developed myself using my dad’s old Yashica rangefinder which had a single coated lens. The negatives had a gorgeous tonal gradation to them.
What an excellent facility! When I see "Made in Japan", on an item, I know it's a sign of quality.
I can say without a shadow of a doubt, this is absolutely beautiful work. Thank you for bringing light to the hard work that these people do!
You're very welcome
They did an amazing job on my 1967 M4. Just a perfect camera now!

Those guys have saved my mamiya 7 twice! Fixed a lens and the shutter lever back in 2017. Amazing service by Kumiko and the team!

One of my dream jobs 👍 Awesome video thank you 🙏
Wow what an interesting place great video
I can't comprehend such a concept as too much workshop space.
This is so cool. People genuinely loving old cameras and putting the time and effort in to maintain and restore them.
On another note ... Love the silent quiet workplace. Ahh quiet and hyper focusing .. Lovely place to work on things !! Lovely ~

That vid was so interesting. Thank you! Gary
Very cool.
Very cool! Now they just need to hire 10 more people or so to take care of that backlog :)
Where do you find 10 people that have the knowledge and experience to do this job? I'm sure they hire anyone that walks in there and is capable.
So amazing!
