David, most kibbutzim (collectives) are not structured the way they used to be. Most have become privatized and commercialized in the 90s. I was born on one in 1954 and at that time the collectives were a socialized form of a settlement. There are only a handful today that are still active in that format. Every collective today has a factory or some industry that has become the main source of employment for the residents. Other unique traits that were once a staple such as communal living of family members in dorms according to age groups instead of with the parents and dining at a dining hall with the whole collective at all meals are mostly a thing of the past.
The system was vital in the early days of the nation when austerity was present and provided employment, living and educational stability at a time when the economy was stretched thin.
The caller might be living in one of the remaining unchanged collective. I don’t believe he mentioned which one.
Israel was heavily socialized back in the 50s and 60s when I lived there to the extent that red flags were flown on May 1st, celebrating Workers Day.
Today, Israel is as commercialized as the US.

For the same reason why Fascists are given a platform.

Socialism most definitely works on the micro scale. Plenty of examples of Worker Co Ops being successful. People will say Co Ops are not Socialist but it’s Socialist under the definition of Worker Ownership of the companies said workers are employed at.
What is the most definitive study in support of socialism?
@@Naskinlahtaaja China's economic development.
@@LittleAl016 so nothing. This is why you are not taken seriously by anyone.
@@Naskinlahtaaja How is the literal success of China's economic development "nothing"?
@@LittleAl016 I asked for the most definitive study, you mentioned China's development. If I have to explain to you how that is not a study, then I guess I know why you are a socialist.
Marx( no, not that one or his brothers) and Engeles were merely retroing when doing that Communism thing. Already had existed for 1000s of years.
They really did just name and describe a system that already existed.

not sure that Sean (is that how his name is spelt?) got to ask his question or to make his statement. seems like David got side-tracked as soon as Sean mentioned how he lives in a kibbutz.
Seann, probably.
@@HeriEystberg possibly. seems like every one spells the same name differently these days.
I cringe hard when David defends capitalism.
And the majority of us cringe when you defend socialism.
Socialism is just a "vehicle" for totalitarianism.
Remember that socialist with the small mustache?
To further David's point, that this degree of socialism ( small s ) works to the advantage of most with those boundaries. As he says, each can achieve some higher degree of self-sufficiency than most other systems....as long as the population is small say
Socialism or barbarism: you choose. Do you want American cities to look like Munich, or Mogadishu? You choose.
This is probably a better question: Socialism? Or extinction? You choose. Do you want Earth to look like how it does in Star Trek? Or do you want it to look desolate and incapable of sustaining life? You choose.
@@LittleAl016 socialism can lead to dystopian horrors too, just because the people own the means of production and exchanges goods are traded on doesn't mean it's going to just go great. Still need healthy competition or power will be absorbed by whomever happens to be in power at the time, that is reality because humans will corrupt any system but healthy completion helps negate the pooling of power.
@@Someaddress555s That's the programming talking.

@@Someaddress555s The whole "Socialism can lead to dystopian horrors" is really just Capitalism projecting itself onto Socialism.

This crazy christian censorship needs to stop. It even happens on the phone when calling government agencies. I have been hung up on by social security for saying “god damn”, “damn”, “ stupid crap” and finally “this is bull shit”.
How about just basic civility? I get they're a bureaucracy that gets annoying, but they're just workers who have to follow their rules. I know its difficult to stay civil, but they have to deal with a lot of a$$ho/e5.
@@Someaddress555sC O P E
Have you thought about not saying those things while on a call with a government agency?
4:30 the original it takes a village thing.
David has never seen that named spelt "Seán" ?
That's surprising or I misunderstood something
All accent marks, like the Irish fada, vanish in American print. The standard keyboard doesn't have any at all. If say, for example, you name your little boy Seán he will appear in all government records as Sean.
I am ap Hugh, son of Hugh. People speak my name as Pugh. It's a Welsh English thing.
David, I love ya man but saying you never knew the spelling Sean? Hello, Sean Connery, Sean Penn, Sean Hannity! I know you know that one.
That’s just it. It wasn’t spelled, Sean or Shaun.
“Sian (with a circumflex on a) is an Irish or Welsh name that is pronounced Sharn (silent r)/Shaan. It is a single syllable.”
@Bets74 well there we go. I was only listening. When he said Irish.... I thought of my Irish husband, Sean.
Why in the world would David leave failed calls in the video??
C'mon David, I thought you were a worldly/erudite guy. You have never seen Sean? ;^)
Maybe it was the rarer spelling "Seáin"
I find it hard to believe also, we didn't see what he was reading so who knows.
He probably spelled it Seán, the traditional spelling.
They said it was a weird Irish spelling, of the little bit of Gaelic I know I have problems reading a lot of it too. First time I saw Padraig it took me a few tries.
@@Someaddress555s Fair enough y'all. If it was "Sean" then shame on David (just kidding) but if it was Seáin, then much tougher. But I still would have guessed "Shawn" and hoped for the best. ;^)
@@machoopichoo2 I get that. The Israeli part throws in a whole new wrench, so I kind of get why David didn't just assume it was Irish for Shawn/Sean.

So are people opposed to socialism antisocial? Aren't all religions socialist?
Which religions specifically preach the community should own the means of production and the exchanges for goods? Some of them get into altruism, or working together, but I can't think of a major religion that preaches straight up socialism as an economics system.(certain sects do, but not the major ones unless I'm forgetting one)

I wish there was a more in-depth philosophical reason why I hate the idea of communes, but really I just hate being around other people lol
Having a private home that is isolated from the prying eyes of neighbors with lots of inefficiently utitilized land and a big fence is literally the only aspect of capitalism that is appealing to me.
