I don't know if it's just where I live or because I'm a millenial but I was under the impression that a lot of people IRL still wear clothes in that style ish and that it never completely went out of style (for the fashion girls online yes it did but not so much for "everyday" people) To me a lot of it, the shapes, colors and simple designs make these clothes quite timeless. I still have a bunch of clothes from that era/style so I'm not going to complain that it's resurging!
I think some of this was influenced also by the emo/scene culture, which was big for us elder millennials in 2004-2007ish. Even though I was never on Tumbler (I was almost 30 lol), THIS is my aesthetic for sure because it’s a mishmash of different styles in my life, 90s grunge and alternative also being a huge part of my style evolution. Also, THANK YOU for including Chvrches. They are SUCH an underrated band! The lead singer, Lauren Mayberry, also influenced this style a lot.
Here I am 8-10 years later so glad I never got rid of my clothes from this era. In fact, watching this made me realize that this time is when I started to come into my own style & I sttiiillll wear variations on a lot of these looks! I wore my black disco pants to my bar job last weekend (styled w a corset top and thick heeled PVC boots) & got a TON of compliments! Just goes to show… you can restyle and totally update these pieces! But overall, this (esp the soft grunge) was one of the more wearable times in recent fashion lol

I do think one nice thing about this style coming back is that people who couldn’t participate at the time can now. For example my girlfriend is trans likes to dress in this style because she wanted to in high school but she wasn’t out yet.

The Urban Outfitters BDG HighWaisted Black Skinny jeans had us in a chokehold . I often bought them when they were on "Sale" and lived in them all year round. practical not always, but stylish hell yeah.😂
