I learned the difference between informative and persuasive speeches. Both have a specific purpose when delivered correctly and the main difference between the two types are how the speeches are structured. For example when it comes to informative speeches it's like telling a story where there's a beginning, middle, and end. This way information given to the audience has a chronological order they can follow along. When it comes to persuasive speeches the way they're structured has to do with building arguments with one paragraph after another. This makes sense because as a speaker you want to move the audience and more importantly convince them that your information is convincing.
I like the way you teach sir. 😊 Tommorow is our first day for public speaking sub. I just want to prepare my self for this subject and then suddenly i saw your videos. This helped me a lot and i really understood their differences. I'll going to watch more of your videos. Thank you and God bless sir ❤
I am really happy to find you. I've been struggling with a lot of this issues you talk about not only in this video but in all of the videos I've watched in your channel. Thank you for all the advice and how to improve on our communication!
On point as always. We just had a similar discussion in a business networking group this morning. Most businesses still fall into the informative category when describing their products/services.
Thanks, Carl. Great point. I often leave discussions with professionals about their business thinking, "Okay, but why would that help me specifically?"
I literally fell asleep while listening to this video, it's so repetitive and monotonous, it goes on forever. I'm going to have to rewind a try to listen again.
Thanks, you have a more honest way to do things. I have been watching videos on this subject and was getting sick watching some of the other people's videos. They say persuasive speaking but it looked like manipulation. I want to get people on my side with honesty. I want to persuade them not manipulate them. Thanks!
@@alexanderlyon I am trying to get a bill passed that would make my community safer and happier. Some of the senators and assembly don't like it, I have to figure out why so maybe I can either persuade them or find middle ground. I know your videos will teach me.
Hi Alex. How about the difference of meaning between convincing and persuading ? 1 - You may convince someone of the benefits that recycling your waste can bring to the environment. However, after your talk, they might not start recycling their waste at home - although you may have convinced them (meaning : their opinion has changed). 2 - If you persuade someone, I think you sell something to them (that might be an opinion, or a product). However, after you ve talked them into doing something you believe in and think they should do, they might find themselves not entirely convinced that this will actually benefit them (or the planet, if your talk was still about recycling). What is your view on this ? Did I convince you ? ;)
It is an interesting question but I think they are so close in meaning that trying draw clear lines between the two would be 99% academic. But, it is an interesting question. Feel free to post your point of view on how they are similar and/or different here.
Hi Romain, I think the difference in meaning you ascribe to convincing and persuading isn't at the heart of your question. It seems that you're targeting the difference between changing thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs, versus changing behaviors. It has long been held that the former is much easier to alter than the latter. That is, it isn't so difficult to convince people that dieting and exercise is good for them, but it is, often, very difficult to get them to eat healthier and increase their physical activity.
I love your teaching/presentation style. Thank you for another great video. I would love for my videos to look more professional. Would you mind telling me which video editing program you use? I love how you are able to have the name of a point you made and it automate with a check mark. Very cool and very professional looking! Great job!! Thank you in advance.
Hi Steve. Thanks for the compliment. I use Final Cut Pro and this is the specific title pack I use most often that goes with it: videohive.net/item/60-titles-pack/14050399?s_rank=30
@@alexanderlyon thank you! Is Final Cut Pro only for Mac? I only seem to find it for Apple products? I have an HP (should have got an Mac Book)... thanks again for your help.
I find that the lines are kinda blurred sometimes. For example, when I am trying to give an informative speech, I somehow usually end up giving a persuasive speech instead. I think that this is one of my personality flaw.
Yes, some topics are emotional/controversial but as long as you are not hoping to change your listeners' minds, then it can remain an informative speech.
Hi, Justin. Yes, a "how to" speech about Sushi is a demonstration speech. Demo speeches are one type of informative speech. In public speaking classes, we usually separate the informative speeches (e.g., self-introduction, informative, & demonstration) but those are ALL version of informing vs persuading. There are handful of types of informative speeches. But, this video is not about the types of informative speeches. It's about the key differences between persuasive speeches and informative.

Thanks a ton! I struggle with turning my informative speeches into a persuasive halfway through without even realizing it and this helped a lot!

Thanks, Cesar. Glad they are helpful. God bless you too!
This material very useful for me, to make decision, whether use speaking information or speaking persuasive.

This video is the best ever video i've ever seen about the information and persuasive speech thank sir 💖
Thank you, Kiran!

Yes, I agree. It has to be honest and ethical.

Thank you!
So I just realized that this is basically an informative how-to speech 😂
I find that the lines are kinda blurred sometimes. For example, when I am trying to give an informative speech, I somehow usually end up giving a persuasive speech instead. I think that this is one of my personality flaw.
It happens. I don't think it's a flaw. Persuasive speaking is typically more difficult. So, in some ways, you're headed in the right direction.
hey this really helped me because i made an informative speech but i needed a persuasive speech. thank you!!!
You're so welcome!
Thank You!! Extremely clear 😃
Glad it helped, Fire Potato.

Can you give an informative speech on a controversial or emotional topic without it becoming persuasive?
