  • M I Tarr Guitars. PART 2 Documentary building of a Super Strat ST drop top style guitar in Orange sunburst.
    This documentary is a fly on the wall, day to day working life of Luthier, Guitar Tech and Music tutor, Michael Tarr
    The Ex British Steel Electrical Engineer, working from his home base Studio and Workshop, in South Wales. United Kingdom
    No explanation or narration is needed. Just watch and I hope you enjoy the film.
    I film my guitar building progress to give enjoyment to other's with an interest in the guitar making process. And for my Children and Grandchildren.
    PLEASE NOTE, There is more than one way to do any of the processes in building a guitar. Do what works best for you and the tools/equipment you have. Also all health and safety equipment were in place and used. And only removed for filming purpose.
    Music track.. Wild Turkey
    Many thanks Mike

Yours are the only ones I've seen that feature your grandchildren helping. It made me think back to when I was young and my dad was working on something and I'd wander over and he'd hand you the tool, and say "make yourself useful as well as ornamental!" and taught me to always be brave and make the attempt to try something. I play electric bass and I've "assembled" several from parts purely for my own use. I'm a builder in the sense that as a mechanic, I can change the oil a& filter and put in spark plugs and replace a tire or a wiper blade. You, on the other hand, rebuild engines and transmissions. Wish I had a way to get ta Whales so's we could jam.
    Don't s'pose you're plannin' on visitin' Los Angeles any time soon...
    Have you ever considered doing a "soft V" neck profile? Ever thought up an
    original design? (prolly the most impossible of impossibles) Ever thunked about
    building an amp? You inspire a thousand questions... My cat is yelling at me to break

      Jonny Beck. A lot there Jonny I’ll try and answer them.
      I have been to LA, and would love come back, maybe one day.
      Soft V not my thing because of the way a shape the neck by hand. D’s & C’s shapes easier for me. Sorry for the cop out.
      Amps I have thought about doing, because I’m a electrical engineer by trade for 30 odd years so it no problem,other than time.
      Now for your big question build my own design, its not going to work, Jonny my friend.
      Because the great Les Paul and Leo Fender got it right it think. I can’t better it. I’m Just not good enough. They were great designers and innovators
      So I just build what I would want to have if I had the money.
      Great questions Jonny, Many Thanks to you. I’m 63 next birthday I don’t work as hard has I use to, the grand kid ware me out. Now you take care. Best wishes from the Wales. Mike

I would go down the buffing wheel road but space is my problem. Has for the air polisher, it is slow and takes time but works ok . Probably I will never use it again other than as a detail sander, which is what it started out as. Anyways great to talk to you, my new build is finish it’s a PRS style guitar. Hello Mike! you are really very good! I love your videos, I've seen almost all of them, they are very relaxing as well as satisfying. can I ask you a question? I love the color you chose for your neck, may I know what kind of paint and color did you use? I think it's kind of yellow

    • @mitarrguitars
      @mitarrguitars  Год назад +1

      Hello Toto. The colour is an Amber colourtone stain from StewMac. It can be mixed with water and rub it on or mixed with lacquer and sprayed. Which is what I did. Experiment with how much you use to obtain the colour or more coats can darken the shade. I use one coat with clear lacquer as a top coat. Thank you for you comment it is very much appreciated.. Mike

      Hello Gerard. Its is called Brummer dark mahogany gain filer. Its comes in a small tub in dust form, you mix it with a small amount of water. It go's a long way so don't need much, and once mixed it will keep of years in an air tight container. Thanks for your comment, glad enjoyed the film. Stay safe....Mike

    Very impressive, how much dollars did it cost to get all the materials and electronics?

    • @mitarrguitars
      @mitarrguitars  3 года назад

      Hi Branson. Its about $650 dollars, (£500 pound). You may get some of the materials cheaper in the States, like the wood. Things can increase if you use more expensive hardware. For example Tuners $55 for Gotoh which are great or $100 for Schaller. Glad you like the film, many thanks Mike.

    Really interested in the polisher and pads that you use for buffing the paint. Can I ask what those are and where you get them?

    • @mitarrguitars
      @mitarrguitars  3 года назад +1

      Hi Augus. The polisher is a mini 2 inch Air sander really, which i fit form polishing pad to it. I use normal automotive polishing pads of different grades, which i cut to size. Very cheap tool and works great. I also still use it for sanding sometimes. Velcro head on it so it very versatile. You can get them on Ebay. Many thanks for you comment. Stay safe....mike

    Ok, I'm stumped, what's with the Volume Pot? What is it? Why's is so big?

    • @mitarrguitars
      @mitarrguitars  3 года назад +1

      Hi Nathan. Its nothing special. The Volume pot is like any other standard CTS 250k audio taper. What is different is the Tone Pots, they are 250k audio taper but mini size. It makes no difference really, they work the same.The mini pots are a lot cheaper than the CTS pots, I buy the mini pots 50 at a time and in 15 years only ever had one faulty, I get them from Allparts. So I do use them a lot. It just looks bigger than its is, compared to the Mini Pots.
      The bigger Vol pot just happen to be left over for a recent job and I used it up, nothing else. Hope you enjoyed the film, and many thanks for the comment..Mikes

    Which one is harder to build, a Strat or a Tele?

    • @mitarrguitars
      @mitarrguitars  4 года назад

      Morgan C Hi Morgan, The Strat. It as much more routing involved on the body. Neck are no different to build. The Strat I made had the flame maple cap. That made it much more challenging again. Hope you enjoyed the film. I’m starting filming an telecaster this week. Which will a maple cap and body binding. Mike

      Hi Danial. It’s is a fibre glass abrasive circuit board cleaning pen. By trade I was electrical engineer, it cleans any contact before soldiering or tinning with only a few rubs. Amazing tool, you won’t see any other luthier using it. But it’s excellent practice to get into. Solder flows better and quicker. Hope you enjoyed the film. Mike
