Never heard discing described as super fun, but then my discing was in orange groves. Stand-up John Deere 2020s (no cabs or A/C, tractors, hand clutch). Tree branches and/or spider webs in your face every time you turned around. And 14 hours of (hot, humid) daylight in the summer.
    Best days of my life.

I am very glad to hear your grandfather is getting better Laura.. My grandfather was also a Navy Seabee during both Korea & Vietnam conflict.. So out of respect for his service & your great channel I ordered a Support the Farmers Long Sleeve T shirt.... I am very proud that your going to have Caz-Gear donate to The Fisher House.. When a loved one is hurt or injured and their family has to be by their side last thing they need to worry about is where they can sleep....

Laura: I am a Grand Island boy (born long ago), now living in Colorado. Love watching your operation as it reminds me of my many farm family relatives ( Rockville, Ravenna, Loop City areas). As a kid, I helped with corn, alfalfa, dairy, feedlot, and pivot irrigation. My, oh, My, has farm technology advanced from old International tractors with sun exposed metal seats, no-power steering and heavy clutch pedals !!!.
Keep it going, girl. You make us Flyover farm stock proud !

That trailer tire BEGS to blowout when; you’re in a hurry to be somewhere with it, the weather is cold/rainy,/snowy or just plain raw, or you just had a great, humongous cup of strong coffee AND a bran muffin and you think you can MAYBE make it to the shop bathroom--but, the trailer tire says; no,no,no you won’t !! Lol ! Replace the tire Laura, it’s a fraction of the cost of what it moves ! Better yet, have your dad or Grant change it out ! Don’t be so girlie ! Lol ! Great video, as always

Recommendation for ALL of your windows: get some RainX window cleaner. AFTER you clean and dry the windows, spray the RainX onto the windows and BUFF it into the windows. Once that has been buffed dry, do that again three times. You won't need to worry about mud and rain again!! PROMISE!! It works so well on my truck while driving that I don't need to use the wipers during a total down pour. Dust and dirt, lol what dust and dirt!!

Hi Laura, happened apon(?) your channel a couple days ago, been binging since. I'm probably your grandpa's age. To make a short story long, I too joined the service (CG) rather than get drafted. After being discharged, went to community college in eastern Wa St. During the summer between school years, just to see if I could still do a full day of hard work, I tried to get a job as combine operator with a local custom harvester/ farmer. To my surprise he hired me. Watching your videos, I'm aghast/alarmed at the number of micro processers, tech gizmos in the new tractors and combines. Oh by the way I was ok harvesting wheat, but pretty lowsey with pinto beans. Love your and Grants' attitude. Our future farm generation is in good hands with you and others like you. I didn't stay with farming, just an old city guy now.

We didn't use discs, the ground was too uneven and full of rockheads & fairly steep slopes due to it being Grade 2c (McCaullay Institute classification), which means medium loam soil but thin & variable depth! Basically, we had really good, versatile soil, just not enough of it!! 😁😁
Back before I gave up farming, harvest was a bit manic, especially as I was a one man operation!
    The rotation from grass was:
    Spring Barley (malting)
    Winter Barley (malting)
    Winter Oil Seed Rape
    Winter Wheat (distilling)
So the Winter Barley needed to be cleared of bales (4ft round bales for bedding cattle) and ploughed, worked & sown/fertilised (part application for winter); this really needed to be finished by August to allow enough autumn growth to get the crop through to the spring!
This cultivation would be done on non combining days & mornings if combining! But I'd prioritise sowing to keep the crop on the same start date!
Once the rest of the cereals were cut, or on non-combining days (ie poor weather) I'd plough the oil seed rape & cultivate before sowing & part fertilise Winter Barley (September at the latest) and then Winter Wheat (by the middle of October)! I would normally plough the ground for Spring Barley over the winter to allow the frost to help break the ground down before spring cultivation & sowing!
As I said, hectic harvest & a lot of late nights (combining until about 21.00 latest, but ploughing, etc much later!) whilst praying for good weather, which Scotland isn't famous for!! And in between all this, I'd have the inevitable breakdowns on the MF525 Super2 combine to fix! These tended to be belts & hydraulic hoses, but occasionally the odd bearing! The rest of my equipment, although old, was pretty reliable! My best bit of kit was my 4wd MF3060 Datatronic, which I bought at 3yrs old, ironically it came from the farm my mother owned before she got married! I farmed my maternal grandparents land! Dad was a baker from the Glasgow (as in Cop26 🙂!) area!
I do miss farming, but I'm too old & knackered (arthritis, diabetes, etc!) to go back to it now I'm in my early 60's!!
What fascinates me about Laura Farms is them wierd crops you guys grow over there, and the pure scale of it all! Laura, just how big are the farms that you and Grant have??
My biggest hurdle was trying to earn a living from 125 arable acres, without the chance to buy more land with interest rates @ 18% throughout my farming years!!

      @keithpfrang2114 3 года назад

Discing and plowing are two different operations performed by two different implements, a disc and a plow. Plowing is a much deeper more radical turning of the soil. Rarely done anymore unless your switching from a grass type crop to a row crop.
