As a Scotsman living on the Greek island of Rhodes, I can say that Greece is an incredible country with a truly fantastic history. Ancient Greece was full of incredible inventions, innovations and was light years ahead of practically everyone else. Now, when I walk down to the shore of the Aegean Sea near my house, I love to think about all the incredible times that have passed. No wonder Greece is the cradle of western civilisation.
Lovely words my friend. We hope you enjoy your time in Greece, the people that Love & Respect our Homeland and its History... this is also their home & they are also our fellow Greeks 🙌🏻

As a member of the greek navy and one of its two naval schools I have seen this ship get moving and going outside the bay. Two years ago, twice a week we took the students of Greece’s two naval schools (men and women about 20 years old) from their quarters to the place you just saw, put them inside the seats that Harald showed you and got the ship moving. The reason was to get footage for a video to be shown on TV. Don’t get fooled by appearances, this ship can move really fast. And by the way the «πηδαλιούχος» (the controller that takes the central seat) doesn’t have to be strong. I remember the commander always using the same girl to control the ship as she could quickly interpret his commands and turn the ship at will.
Greg S They went outside the bay you see in the video, but eventually had to come back so that the students could return to their schools before it got dark...
@@gus2600 Depends on the beach.. And its normal for Greece to have rocky beaches once the Aegean sea is much more tranquil than the ocean hence the rocks erosion (which turns them into sand) is lesser.

Well, the Greek - Persian battles and the Athenian general Themistocles that you mentioned in the video are basically what kept Greece alive and what led western civilization to develop into what it is today.
Additional thanks to the guys giving you this ship tour, seeing you all moving around the space and across the deck etc. is extremely helpful for storytellers like me to get an idea of the scale and perspectives not easily seen in movies or in drawings.
Please do what you can to recreate the battle of Salamis. The turning point was convincing the citizens to give up their share of the silver mined and use the money to build the armada...this is the sacrifice of each citizen made for the life of freedom WE enjoy! Thank you so much for your historic support!.

Harold, I loved this video! You made me feel almost like I was on that tri-reme myself. You captured your experience better than I could have ever expected. Thanks much bro!
I just read Victor Davis Hanson's account of Salamis on vacation last month. He spoke of the advantages the Greeks had in a citizens army. Thanks for posting.
My Viking friend, we are tied even more Historically. The Predominantly Greek "Byzantines" (Eastern Romans) employed the Varangian Guards in their Ranks as an Elite Soldier Unit. Many of these Vikings Varangians Runestones are found all over Scandinavia that claim on them that they served in GRIKKLAND....(Greek Land) aka Greece. Nice presentation & very impressed with your Historical Knowledge, eapecially about the Serpent Column! Bravo 👏
We have a little 10m wooden ship on the harbor to the right of this trireme. And when we take it out every year in the Spring to service it. I pass by this trireme every weekend. It's pretty cool.
Great you liked it man! Welcome to Greece! Since you are Scandinavian and interested in greek history you might be familiar with the Varangian Guard. The symbol of Piraeus, a marble lion now in Venice, was inscribed with Scandinavian runic inscriptions by these medieval Scandinavian mercenaries. One can still see the lion and inscription in the entrance of the venetian arsenal. That’s why Olympiakos fans call themselves “Porto Leone”...
Nice one Harald for the video.. I was going to visit the fatherland this year (for the first time!) but due to current events it's looking like it's postponed till next year. Thanks for the little taste of Greece that i'm missing.
The Greeks should also Build a Replica of the Byzantine DROMON ship as well, with its Dragon Face on the front & equip it with Replicas of Greek Fire Machines on it. There is a Dromon that was fossilized in Constantinople and found in modern day turkey in tact when they were making digs in certain areas!
Magnificent video, thank you a lot for making us, who'll probably never be on board, experience this! On a side note, the Romans also generally didn't use slaves to row their galleys, but trained free people. There are exceptions in times of urgency, but the Romans would often free the slaves before putting them on an oar, since it was difficult to have a functional warship with unmotivated slaves. Most historians believe that the cadence of rowing wasn't given with drums like in the movies but with flutes, if I recall right. Only in the late medieval and Renaissance period did the practice of using condemned people on galleys become common. This was facilitated by using less numerous but much bigger oars, on which several people where rowing, this made the errors of a single rower less significant for the entire ship.
The naval battle of Artemisio took place at the same time as the battle of Thermopylae. The final naval battle was the naval battle of Mykali on the shores of Ionia where the entire Persian fleet was destroyed.
