- Part 6.1 of an analog stick mod for gamepads. This video covers disassembling a Razer Tartarus v2 and preparing the switch PCB.
Please note I will be doing more videos for other devices, specifically the Razer Orbweaver. The Tartarus set of videos will be ".1" and the Orbweaver set will be ".2". Hope that makes sense.

I dont plan on doing the mod, but I will be taking my V2 apart to replace a dead switch in the Dpad. This video really helped to familiarize myself with the components and a nice little intro soldering help. Thanks for taking the time to make this!
Glad to be a help. Hope it goes well for you.
@@tuffrabit thank ya sir!
@@yesitsmecsd I too used this video to remove a faulty thumbpad board, but I'm at a loss for where I can buy a new board.
@@energgie is it the whole board or the switches for directions? Like are all directions broken at once?
Analog Tartaruuuuuuuuuuus...!!! Excelent work sir! 👍
Thanks. You gonna be attempting this yourself? I'd like to know how helpful this series is for DIY'ers.
@@tuffrabit yes, I will. the videos and procedure description are top notch. can't be possibly any better 🙂.
Not so much interested in the mod, but this video helped fix another problem without having to take it completely apart, so thanks for that!!
Great! Glad it was a help.
Thank you so much this really helped with my drifting
thank you
These are the switches used for the Tartarus: www.kailhswitch.com/micro-switches/mini-size-micro-switch.html I replaced two of mine already.
amazing work. keep it up
Difficulty 8/10 - sat here burning my finger tips trying to get the iron hot enough to melt the solder and not damage the board whilst prising off those buttons is tough and slow work! Update: Holding the buttons with pliers so you dont burn and use your other fingers to push on the board made this quick and easy sudden;y.
Yeah, it can be rough. It's also inconsistent. I've had times when they come right off, and other times where I fight it for far too long. I think that must come down to the type of solder the factory uses, maybe it has changed over time. I've had the best luck by adding some of my own solder to each pad and making sure it flows into the joint.
@@tuffrabit yeah it's a bit random. After I figured on using pliers, 3 came off easy but the last one was a monster and had to be the one that was near a socket on the other side so had to be extra careful.
saw a gentleman use a small knife like tool to place between the board and switch make removal easier. Not sure this technique would have made the process a little less painful.
I believe I've seen the same feller. I've tried that technique before and broken the switches. If I didn't have a de-soldering station I'd likely be still doing it that way and gotten better at it... shrug.
I wish i could of just ordered my v2 with the stick already modded this way. I dont like the dpad and want the controller stick so badly
Yyyeeeeaaaaaahhhhhhh I get it. But Razer wants the lowest barrier to entry option that generates profit. Analog sticks aren't easy to do right.
Is that Nostromos D-pad PCB (with components) sold anywhere as spare part? I need to replace one of my buttons but I'm kinda worried that I can mess up a bit, so I want to have a planB :P lol
It's not sold separately to my knowledge. It would be very hard for somebody to mess up. The worst case scenario is if you bump one of the SMD diodes with the hot iron and either knock it off or burn it.
How much would you charge to do this for me? I don’t trust myself enough to mess around with it.
Hey! Connect with me over discord or email and we can go over the details.
So any idea where you can find a replacement one of those switches you removed? Do you have spares from any of these replacements your willing to sell?
I don't keep any around. But you can buy them yourself here: www.aliexpress.com/item/4000343886996.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000014.1.55055db1tk0xMA&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.14976.157518.0&scm_id=1007.14976.157518.0&scm-url=1007.14976.157518.0&pvid=55af6942-4f54-4b14-a1d3-77669c1c7973&_t=gps-id:pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.14976.157518.0,pvid:55af6942-4f54-4b14-a1d3-77669c1c7973,tpp_buckets:668%230%23131923%238_668%23808%234093%23852_668%23888%233325%236_4976%230%23157518%230_4976%232711%237538%23501_668%232717%237566%23890
hey man thanx for sharing, i was wondering since synapse is such a headache for me (it has imput lag, i need to set the process in windows to real time, and even then it sometimes doesn't register keystrokes or executes only half of the macro, i can't cancel out running macro's etc. All this when the mouse functions of my naga x work fine.) So what i'm thinking to do is; i still have an old logitech g600, which is working fine except the thumb buttons became hard to press, to connect all the buttons of the tartarus to the "controller" of the g600, so I can make my pc believe i have a g600 connected instead and i can use the logitech software with it, which also never gave me any issues. Would this be at all possible? I also thought to buy the usb adapter that allows you to control it as a seperate keyboard, but I need synapse running for my mouse, and then it will also auto detect and run the tartarus (seems i can't disable / remove the game pad)
Yeah that's doable. A lot of tedious work mind you, but doable.
@@tuffrabit thanx man I might give it a go at some point; I almost found a great other solution; replace synapce for reWASD, but guess what; withouth Synapse 3 of the 12 side buttons of my Naga x have no output.... So I have to keep using Synapse or at least i know of no way how to disable the Tartarus from it
PLEASE HELP.
Read in another comment, albeit from a year ago, that you do mod work if paid.
I have a Razer Tartarus Chroma that has 1 maybe 2 buttons that don't respond like they use to, they still work but you got to press down a bit harder. Anyway, decided to buy a Tartarus V2 Pro to replace it and it sucks compared to my Chroma. Seeing as you can't buy (except for the V2 models) them anymore and new ones if found online cost upwards of $340 USD, I'm looking to repair my Chroma but I would rather pay someone else who knows how to do this instead of maybe messing up my Chroma more doing repairs myself.
Would gladly pay you for work instead of paying exorbitant prices for a used one online.
Hey! Sorry for the delay in responding. There's a number of options we can pursue. Send me an email and we can go over everything. tuffrabit.mods AT gmail DOT com.
@@tuffrabit YESSSS!
Will do. Thanks.🤩
have you tried using a "3d analog stick" like the ones on the psp or the nintendo switch? they are smaller and i think probably better suited for this project.
I have yes. They are difficult and tedious to work with. Full sized sticks feel a good bit better.
@@tuffrabit Oh ok. I kind of want to do something like this, but I just want to tack a joystick onto the palm rest of my mechanical keyboard right below the spacebar. I think these shallow/low profile joysticks might sort-of fit well on my keyboard. It is unfortunate that they are so hard to work with. Which low-profile potentiometer did you use? The PSP or the Nintendo Switch one? I noticed that there are various revisions of the PSP one on AliExpress. I wonder if one is "better" or "easier to work with" than the other.
Also, have you ever tried modding computer mice?
@@drv30 You could certainly just tack one there on your keyboard. And yes, if you're going to do that a flat bottomed low profile stick would be ideal. I was using PSP sticks at the time. The most irksome thing about working with those is the requirement for a breakout board to handle the wiring. All the PSP low profile sticks I tried had film wiring that melted on he soldering iron. Had to use a breakout board with a connector and scrape the traces to solder to. And no, I've never modded a mouse.
@@tuffrabit Oh okok, thanks for the quick replies, appreciate it!
How much do You charge to mod this? And would You do it for me when I live in Norway?
Hey! Yeah, I can help you out. Shoot me an email and we can chat over the details. Address is tuffrabit.mods AT gmail DOT com
Do you think it would be possible to change the d pad to an anlogue and where that little circle button is (profile switcher) change that to a 5 way stick like the azeron has?
Hey! Yeah, analog is possible. That's what this mod is. Swap the factory DPAD out for an analog stick. And also yes on the 5 way switch, I've done that before. It doesn't tend to end up looking pretty so I don't talk about it much.
@@tuffrabit awesome. Thanks for the reply!
@@tuffrabit could you not use 1 of these
thepihut.com/products/thru-hole-5-way-navigation-switch?variant=27740437457 ? Looks like it would fit right into the circle hole where the profile switcher would go. Would be a little bit more tidier kind of like how azerons is
@@LightsOutGN yes. I've used several just like that. They do fit-ish. The issue is... how do you secure it? Screws mean extra plastic to put a screw into. Glue means a lot of glue holding it in place. There are options to make it fit, but it's not quite that simple.
@@tuffrabit yeah that's what I was worried about, fixing it in place. Appreciate you taking the time to reply, I will have a think about it
Can you but the board as a replacement? Was replacing broken switches and one came out with the connector still attached to the switch leg.
I don't understand your question. Are you asking where to get a replacement side switch PCB?
@@tuffrabit I desolder the switches to replace them, but one came out with a piece of copper that makes the connection between the switch and the PCB. So now one switch doesn't work anymore and I need a new PCB.
@@oliviut Ah I see. I don't know of a place that sells just those PCB's. You might could contact Razer directly. Also, there are ways to repair PCB traces like that. I'd look up some trace repair videos on YT to see the methodology.
i have one of these devices, but one of the switches died :/ this is a great solution tho :) but do you know where i could find a replacement still?
Those are just "standard" mouse click switches. Next time I have one apart I can try to measure it for you.
This is the switch www.aliexpress.com/item/4000343886996.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.730a4c4dkyrhpf
Are you still modding these or is this too old a video/project?
Hey! I'm still doing these yes. Shoot me an email and we can go over the details. tuffrabit.mods AT gmail DOT com.
I don't have the soldering tools necessary to do this. Could I have you mod my existing Tartarus for time and materials?
Yeah I can help you. Shoot me an email. tuffrabit AT gmail DOT com. I'll get you on my waiting list.
@@tuffrabit how long is this waiting list? Lol, I need this done so badly
@@DeadByDeath If I were to get you on it right now you'd be about #15.
Or you could get the pro
Hey! I'm not sure what you mean? How does the Pro change the situation?
@@tuffrabit so the v2 is mecha-membrane and the pro is optical
@@sethamoto9061 yes that is true. I'm just not following how that helps with an analog stick though.
The thumb switches are trash anyways
yeah, they're not great for sure
