Back in the day what made the 909 magical was the fact it was the only analog drum machine with swing capabilities, the original 808 didn't have the shuffle and accent features so the 909 in the 80s was a truly unique drum machine.
See? You guys GET IT. All I hear out of people with their boutiques is how much they want the next one and how they already have 12 of them they can't use, like more is better. Simple acid. Dope.
Honestly, I love my TB-03. Use it in probably every song. Don't give a shit about the analogue vs virtual analogue debate. It is one of the most creative little boxes out there, it just compels experimentation and curiosity. But that said, I also love my electribe2 even though most people say it's trash. It isn't.
Sei un mito! Just goes to show its not all about the sound quality of a device but the skill of the user. Excellent tr-09 pattern and pot 'tweakage'. You make the 09 sound really good.
Excellent! A classic combo. It’s all you really need, Albeit, an analog bass synth would nicely complete the setup. No complaints, very very fine work!!
YES! You finally got them! I bought these two as well. I also got the little Jupiter 8 boutique as well. I take these two on vacation to work on stuff before going back to work in Logic.
Nice! I was listening to some old Chicago acid house stuff earlier today! Check out: "Robert Owens - Bring Down The Walls" from 1986 on Trax records if you have a chance. Nice example of a simple 303 and 909 style track.
Couldn't have said better myself! I'm just waiting for that magic day when the price of a DX7 or an M1 goes up to 2000 USD. I'm going to be sooo happy.
Hi Paolo, I wonder if you can help me with a question. How do I link a Roland boutique (JP-08 for example) to a DAW like logic? Do you think is enough to run a USB directly from the JP to the IMAC? My audio interface, unfortunately, doesn't have any MIDI input. Thank you in advance.
Awesome Video! Really wanting to know though, as someone who has been around as long as you have and who very regularly uses an original TR-909, how do you honestly feel the TR-09 holds up? I have a TR-09 myself and love it, but never have used an original TR-909 to compare. Would love to know your professional opinion!
Thanks, Andrew! Well - I bought my TR-909 in 1994 and my TB-303 in 1996 IIRC, so I have them for 20-25 years and know them very well and can give you my opinion: yes, on the TR-09 and TB-303 (and TR-8) you can hear that they are modeled and not analog. They just don't sound completely like the real 909 and 303. But in the grand scheme of things, I don't think it matters that much: they are small and portable, the sound is 80% there, they have super useful extra features like built in compressors and FX, and you can make great-sounding music with them - so they are awesome units, imho. I plan to get all the other Boutiques and do side-by-side comparisons with the originals at some point.
Awesome reply! Thank you so much for your time in doing so! So 80% is what you are saying these boutiques are, in terms of sound, when compared to the originals? That is what I was hoping to get from you, a ball park figure on just how close they are to the real thing! I got the TR-09 to try and make some authentic sounding classic house and Techno as I could, without having a real TR-909, but was wondering just how authentic things would actually sound with this unit. As a producer of oldskool Jungle, this is a new sound for me to try and work with. I find the TR-09 mimics the important 'warts' of the TR-909, such as claps never sounding quite the same with each hit. How the closed and open hats choke each other when played simultaneously and how the snare and clap phase a bit, when played together, since they are from the same sound source. I found this very important, in having things sound as authentic as possible. With an identical programming interface and added bonuses of compressor and parameter tweaks for some of the sounds, that weren't available on the original unit, I really like the TR-09. If I had to ask you one last thing, how do you find the swing compares? Do you find a difference between the TR-909 and TR-09 is on swing, especially at the identical settings? Thanks so much for your time again in replying, really love your channel and all the videos you put up, that have brought a smile to my face! Keep up the great work!
The TR-09 has a compressor built in that you can turn from 0 to max to find the amount that is pleasing to you, as well as gain that allows for an overdriven sound. The TB-03 has no compression, but it has 3 types of distortion from the Boss pedals, 3 variants of FX: delay, tape delay, reverb. Since this is a video and not just audio, I can tell there is some compression that makes it a little messy, but the machines sound amazing. You can get that early 90’s house vibe, to hard bangin’ techno.
I have also the TB-03 but I combine it with a Boss superoverdrive and it gives it a very nice warm distorted sound, they are very cheap to find secondhands, you should give it a try someday
@@SynthManiaDotCom only seeing this a year later as i came back to watch it again as it's so good :).. make another video of these two!! the fans demand it! Same vibe, acid techno, 130bpm minimum. lots of squelchy aggressive acid please sir
dos gos tt303 is brilliant, very clever sequencer too, also the little mb33 retro but you need a sequencer as it's just the sound box, fantastic acid box though.
There was plenty of odd ball swing time in this era of music despite the straight 1-2-3-4 bass drum. I think Paolo did a video about that fairly recently- it is well worth checking out.
good grief that sounds so crap.if someone had a tr808 and a tb303 set up you would know the difference.just use samples?btw its not having a dig at you, your vids are fantastic-its a dig at roland
Nothing against the playing but to my ears a pale sounding imitation of the originals. Roland should stop trying to pass this ACB stuff off as sounding like the real hardware and should have also reissued the analogue originals. They missed the boat and now Behringer looks like they will beat them to it in reissuing the stars of Roland's own back catalogue. I didn't down vote as I am not against the video itself and am a fan of this channel :)
Yawn, same old rhetoric. I also used to think like a dinosaur, but I have accepted that change is immanent and so have learnt to embrace it. Now I enjoy being able to tap out a beat in the car, on the train or sitting in the sun at the local park. How many people you see with original 909s doing that? As for behringer:-"mimicry is the highest form of flattery"
Well this dinosaur has a JD-XA. That was innovation and also embracing the past (fully analogue section + digital). These Boutiques have a place but what I was mainly getting at and what irks me is when they try to pull the wool over consumers eyes that they are indistinguishable from the analogue originals. I can always tell them apart. Perhaps 90% cannot and that is the market Roland now cater most to. Fair enough but I'm always gonna call it like I hear it. If I listen to these and then tracks by Orbital they sound like diluted versions of the originals - something missing. Peace
NOBODY cares about analog except bedroom nerds, old guys who like debating about insignificant details, and gullible young sheep who like repeating inflated “legendary” nonsense they weren’t there to experience and have no clue about. Everyone else is happy, they make music and enjoy life instead of debating nonsense. The Roland Boutiques sound fantastic and that’s all. Roland is catering to normal people, not bedroom nerds who get off on online forum debates about barely audible insignificant details.
Wel these boutiques made it possible to own some bit of legacy stuff it was modelled after and for the analogue part I bought the Behringer stuff also, it is not if if but and and.... the model D combined with the tr-08 is real fun 2 at an affordable price because I would never have the money to buy the originals ..... so it is liberating because everyone can now have fun with it...
