Welcome to Bad Gear, the show about the world's most hated audio tools. Today we are going to talk about the Roland TR-09 Rhythm Composer. Is this compact digital remake of the classic Roland TR-909 drum machine too small for dance music?

top marks for making the video length 9:09
Pure coincidence;)
Holy smokes, the madman did it!
Ooohh wowwww
@@AudioPilz
We see what you did.
Damn! I didn't realize that, until i read your comment. lol.
Video length!
Pure coincidence;)
@@AudioPilz yeah right
"Ninety-Thousand's Pulse-Groove Intelligent Orbital Sleepy Club Swing-beat"
Good one!!!
this week's genre should be called "Honey, I Shrunk The 909" :D
Good one!!!
God I love the 909 sound. It just sounds BETTER. Than everything.
Same here!
Came across this three weeks ago as baked as a tray of cookies and it took me a good few seconds but when the realization hit the toms were playing the intro melody I think I may have laughed so hard I phased onto a new plane of consciousness and traumatized passers by with my synth nerd cackle. Love this series, the comedy, the way you present it, everything. Much respect. :)
So happy to hear that, thanks!

Best synth content on RUclips, and the smallest expensive drum machine on Ebay
Thanks!!!
n°1 ex aequo with Loopop !
and synthmania is GOAT forever of course...
Yeah what gives with the prices on this? I copped mine years ago at a guitar center clearance sale and I used a coupon. It’s crazy small and I had to go over to Jersey to get it (the worst part)
@@AudioPilz would love to see some ART products reviewed
Awesome episode as usual! I love that you made the video length exactly 9:09, and I must say, you've really outdone yourself with that intro music :D
Thank you!!!
The genre this week is "modern setting jrpg city on foot at night theme"
Nice one, thanks!
I like how the video for the "I don't know what to call it" shows somebody going through one red light after the other, and it ends as soon as a green light is reached :)
Red lights were not absolute in the 70s;)
Nine minutes nine! These make coming home from work on Fridays all the more enjoyable, great work
Thanks! (pure coincidence;)
I really love your content and you make my fridays so much better. You deserve way more love, and I'm sure you get a lot of it. Never stop doing what you do!
Thank you so much!!!
Tune definitely sounds like a menu ost for a 2002 gamecube JRPG
Loved playing GameCube!!!
Roland: Naah, real fullsize analog is so 1980
Behringer: Hold my beer
Never mess with Uli ;)
Exactly, I just commented pretty much the same thing just before I saw your comment. LOL!
@@VanguardSound7 Yeah, I already saw 2 other guys doing the same thing. Guess it was pretty obvious, hm?^^
I love my RD8
How can Roland miss the very important point about 80's dance music. What made 80's dance music was playing the hardware live as a performance. It started with the TB303, a nightmare to program so you had to put the very basic of baselines then twist the controls over time, after that it kinda caught on.
these videos are always so inspiring to watch
Thank you!!!
The mystery sub-genre is blatantly Neo-Cappuccino Italo-Bloopmooch.
Perfect for those times when you're gliding smoothly along the sun-drenched coastal roads of the Cote d'Azur in your vintage Italian convertible, grinning like a loon because you've just won a Mahjong tournament.
That's the spirit! Good one, thanks!
#Relatable
I always wondered: "Will you ever run out of words to describe your music pieces?" And low and behold, you answered as if you knew. I guess something for your patreons to come up with :)
That one was tricky;)
Your episodes keep getting better. It feels as if you've invented a new genre. It's amazing that your format already had it's form from the start!
Thank you so much!!!
Love the intro and demos!
Thanks Jeff Pilz! XD
Thanks!
That intro and outro is top tier bad gear boxes ticking stuff. Just perfect. And that jomox jam is pure goodness
Thanks!
Nein Oh Nein Swing? Well played sir!
Thanks!
XD
Nice drum pattern , good 5th note beat gives it some motion and the swing makes the keys come right in with the groove. love making those off beat patterns for todays tech and progressive, not just the 4 on the floor anymore.
Yeah, way to go!
So late today but had to work til 10 pm, now I start into the weekend again with bad gear ❤️
Have a nice weekend!!!
love your content dude, these things are always a fun watch! :D
Thank you!!!
For Roland's new gear i've had a work around for the interface "issue". Create an aggregate interface, basically a hub for all your interfaces under one name. This is how to use it on Mac, i'm sure there is a windows equivalent for a solution too but this has worked well for me. Worth looking up.
Interesting! Thanks for posting!
It's much much harder on windows unfortunately - there's not really a practical solution.
Its definitely a good solution, but with one caveat - The system latency will only be as good as the worst device in the aggregated chain in my experience. But it works really well overall.
It's clearly a piece of "90s Chicago Bass House Ambient Nostalgia Swing"
Good one, thanks!!!
You’re a legend for putting the Rendezvous film over the final jam
Thank you so much!
Another amazing video. The production is totally entertaining and full of jokes. Many go over my head, but I love your sense of humour.
Thank you so much!
Never got the hate for the boutique's, they have limitations but they're to be expected for cheaper versions of big classics in my eyes.
They're not so cheap tho;)
Well... If you compare their prices to the used priced of the originals, then yeah, they're definitely cheaper. xD
They sound amazing, but these tiny knobs and faders are a real PITA imo...
I tried some of them at a store, but got frustrated with them, cause either i couldn't do adjustments fine enough or i kept bumping other controls with my fingers...
They aren't cheap if you compare their originals prices. Far from it
My god, the JU-06A made me ditch the computer. It may be overpriced, but it replaced my last vst.
I think this is why the boutiques sell.
@@AudioPilz Scrunching functionality down into a compact, jam-it-in-a-backpack-and-eat-lunch-in-the-park form factor can end up costing a pretty penny.
On the Mac at least, you can easily add the TR-09 (and other boutiques) to an aggregate audio device, along with your main audio interface. Works very well.
Thanks for the input, how's latency and phase coherency in that method?
@@AudioPilz I use a buffer of 128 samples at 44.1 kHz, so latency is around 10.7 ms, but in Ableton Live I found a MIDI clock offset of -12.6ms is perfect to get everything in sync. I have six boutiques and a System-8, all connected via aggregate device, and several other hardware devices all using MIDI clock. In the aggregate, I have "drift correction" enabled for all devices except my main audio interface. No pops or clicks, but it does use some CPU.
Audio MIDI Setup really needs to not be a hidden unsung gem for Mac producers! It’s also very useful for adjusting gain on a per-channel basis to keep your inputs in balance (not so useful for recording, useful for streaming though)
I love Fridays because it's the end of the week, and because I know a Bad Gear episode is waiting for me on RUclips :)
Thank you!!!
The end tune you did is lovely
Thanks!
Sounds really good actually without the OG "hiss sounds" that come with 1980s gear. Crank up the comp on bassdrum and snare. Use the little sub menu to adjust parameters. The only big issue is size and lack of more outputs...if you need that go TR-8S
Just wait until Behringer see those prices on Reverb ..!
Then wait another ten years and they'll finally ship the Boutique RD-9.
Isn't it out already?
@@AudioPilz I dropped over onto Behringer's website and watched their RD9 demo video. Got a chuckle out of their swipe at the Boutique: "priced for small pockets, without being pocket sized." :D
@@AudioPilz Is it? Genuinely can't find it
Love the toms standing in for the synth in the intro
Thanks!
Great work yet again.
I don't know where that driving footage was filmed, but the architecture was lovely.
Thanks! www.imdb.com/title/tt0169173/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk
@@AudioPilz oh how clever!
Fridays became more special since AudioPilz was recommended by youtube algorithm
Thank you!!!
As a former owner of a real, vintage TR-909, I'll stick to using the sample library (via my MPC 1000) I created before I sold it.
But if I really felt the desire to have another hardware unit versus the samples from the O.G, I'd buy the Behringer clone. LOL!
Using samples is certainly the most convenient way
@@AudioPilz Facts!
Sampling up to 10+ different hits for every sound wasn't though. It took me a good three hours to do all the different pitches and decay settings on the kick, snare, all three toms, the hats, claps, cymbals, and rim shot.
But it was well worth it.
And I barely use them alone.
They are mostly used to layer and build unique drum hits. Combining them with my Vermona DRM 1 MKlll or Yamaha RY-30.
It was fun to learn the ins and outs of the machine in order to really understand what the O.G. process was. But the sounds are a bit dated. And can get lost in the mix unless it utilized very minimalistic instrumentation.
@@AudioPilz The original TR-909 is the most convenient weapon to keep the crowd dancing during a live techno performance. It even has strange flaws in its sequencer timing which for some reason make it more groovy. That being said I wouldn't want to buy a 909 these days, although the RE-909 certainly is a nice piece of gear.
Awesome as always, 6:00 killah!
Thank you so much!
I think the ending jam is a: "Slightly funky Wii sports lobby music if Wii sports music was made by a retro-futuristic re-imagining of the weather channel and very modest house music"
Nice one, thanks!!!
- Roland: launches the 09
- Behringer: hold my beer
Behringer really upped their game!
Hahahaha
Proprllerheads: cause the the weirdos still use rebirth. :]
@@AudioPilz Now if they can just keep the QC sorted. They make some cool stuff for some cool prices, but sometimes the build quality is a little "nervous-making", y'know? :D
- Roland: Hello B? Still holding your beer... 😶
BTW... Aren't we overdue for a season 2 - I show you my gear - on the roof- pedal to the metal - one knob per function - liveset??
Working on the 50K already;)

At last, our friday's rendez-vous :)
That's how people drove cars in the 70s ;)
Dude the track u made with the twighlight zone was actually good 😄
Thank you!!!
I got a bunch of the boutiques. They're just cheap versions of classics that have gotten too expensive for hobbyists like me. They're not perfect and they're a pain to get a handle on but I actually ended up liking how they handled the individual drum outs because, with my cheap gear, it's easier for me to record with one audio cable out rather than one audio cable for each drum. For pros like the AudioPilz this thing probably sucks on toast. It's all about who you are and what you plan to do with it. Great video as always!
Thank you!!!
i owned several boutiques, sold them all to get a System-8 (which is very freaking awesome aside from the tiny screen). The only boutique i kept is my blue edition Sh-01a.
You can use ASIO 4 ALL to combine the audio interface in the TR-09 with your own audio interface. That way you can get multiple outs + your audio interface. I made a video about it with the MC-101 as an example.
Thanks for the input!!!
@@AudioPilz i believe you meant the "outputs" ^^
Well, I tried that with two MX-1 and a TR-08 - never worked reliably, unit assignments were swapped around between sessions, had to rearrange everything in ableton too many times.... If only Roland had reached out to RME, they might have coded something useful, like, a multi device driver that allows you to have every boutique synth connected via USB and then aggregate that into a big fat single device (for Windows). Still love the boutiques, went the analog route after lots of frustration and today your comment (and this video) motivated me to give it another try!
the Intro in this episode is very special :-) thumb up.
Thanks, Anthony!!!
You should have at least 10x more subscribers, love your content bro!
Thanks! Working on it!!!
It’s funny how I hated this thing when it first came out. Now, years later I totally get what’s so great about this little boutique here. The size fooled me.
Time will tell if these end up as cult classics;)
Roland boutiques in a nutshell: Imagine if Fender stopped making electric guitars in 1959. Then they started putting out portable transistor organs with Guitar Hero-like keyboards on the necks. Then the 1980s come, and they create a device that can somewhat recreate the sound of a guitar, but it's tiny, plasticky, and stringless. This would be okay if they didn't still call these devices Strats, Telecasters, and P-Basses.
Better yet, imagine if Yamaha stopped making acoustic grands when they started making their Clavinovas.
I don't think Roland still has the production facilities and supply chain for the real deal
You should review more boutiques! Great content as always, thanks Florian :)
Thanks, working on it!
Omg 1:15 the PMA-5 brought me back (surely the inspiration for the iPad and iPencil thingy). I traded my MC-303 for one in the late 90s; the PMA-5 would make an interesting episode :-) loved the TR-09 upload as per usual, keep up the awesome content, thanks.
Thank you!!! Yeah, PMA5 should be on BG!!!!
Mind blown with the all-909 theme. Also live tuning the ride cymbal is always fashionable. Thank you for that. Re: Jeff Mills’ knees - jamming on the TR-8 is the absolute shit, and not many people know this but the green border was designed to increase cartilage growth.
Thanks! There would be no techno without Jeff Mills' knees
Genre was ambient hop-skip-jump core.
True that!!!
Now, with new Bad Gear video, my Firday is complete and i can chill properly
Same to you, thanks!
Best episode yet!!!
Thank you!!!
The 909 is the most favourite of my drum machines, I don't own one but I do have the VST clone of it, and it still sounds like the original.
I assume you will be hard pressed to find two original 909s that sound the same;)
@@AudioPilz Homemade 909: Get old Casio keyboard that supports MIDI, plug into computer, open Fruity Loops, open VST, use keys for playing drum machine, done.
"Californian neo dubstep ambient IDM cafe vibe"

Hahaha, I feel bad for Jeff's knees just imagining that 8:45 :D Thanks for the videos, recently I joined the bad gear family with my Yamaha Cs1x!
He has the strongest knees in electronic music ;)
The meta-genre naming is off the charts! I commend you sir.

#Participation: "C'était Un Rendez-Vous"
(Actualy it's the title of the video you partialy used, a short film made by Claude Lelouch, with a Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 in Paris in 1976)
Rendez-Vunk? I like how they foley in Ferrari engine noises in the film.
@@jbmcb The Benz' suspension was far better to put a 35mm movie camera in it, a sporty Ferrari wouldn't do the job in 1976 without any image stabilization process. 🧐
@@FLH3official I think a Ferrari would tip over if you tried mounting a 35mm camera on the front bumper :)
That Benz was an automatic. Blew my mind.
now watching it, thanks for linking it
Should have waited 90 days to put this one out.
Also, seems like the TD-9 checks all the boxes this doesn't
Agreed! There is a new player in town
Didn't expect to see this on here, really good video! And I am very late this time-
I really like the TR-909 (and if anything, it's my favourite TR drum machine in the TR series) however I already own an Arturia DrumBrute (another Bad Gear) which is like an 808 and 909 together so I didn't see the point in getting a 909 clone/boutique. I instead opted for the Alesis SR-16 (ANOTHER Bad Gear-) and so far have had some really good use out of it!
Once again, very good video, can't wait for the next one! Keep up the good work, man!
Thank you!!!
i love this drum machine but you're completely right about it. I really wish it individual outs, even if it's just 8th inch outputs across the top of the unit. i don't even use the built in sound card because of the reasons you listed so I record through each sound individually and get as much variation as i need. no sync issues but it requires more time editing. Great video!
Thank you!!!
It's wild how much these have gone up in price. I'm fine with samples.
Surprised me too
the examples were fairly cherrypicked though, if you look at the price graph you can see that they usually go for much lower.
The mad man of bad gear strikes again.
Mad Gear!!!
idk why i laughed at the toms making the intro lmao, another amazing video !

omg, so many jokes and references (video length?), even the ferrari cruising paris video is there. Amazing series, incredible humor, loving it, keep it up man.
Thank you so much!!! (That was a Benz tho;)
@@AudioPilz oh LOL, didn't know that.
The TR-09 is pretty authentic to the original in terms of sound and appearance. That ticks the two most important boxes for me as a gadget (yeah, a gadget)
What I don't understand are the JP-08 and JX-03 which don't resemble the original at all. What were they? They can be the real stars in the Bad Gear show.
I've yet to try those two!!!

It must be the start of the weekend, Florian's here. So let's put the TR-09 under the microscope because you will need to, just to see it properly.

"Visible confusion" was also me hearing the TR-09 in your intro tune.

The track sounds like early Dreamhouse to me. Like before it got folded into the "trance" genre. Sounded good to me though, you gotta drop a Bad Gear EP already. Press it on vinyl for style points. I'll make like 50 cassette dupes for extra style points. Send it to Tech Moan to burn onto Mini-Disc for ultimate style points.

Great vid as always! That intro - seeeeeeesssssshh. As much as I LOOOOVVVVEEEEE the 909...... the tiny knobs were a no go for me. I even let go of my SH01a partly because it was just too small of controls. I do admit though they do sound good.
I do have very small hands and the knobs on this one would be a dealbreaker for me
I wish Roland would come out with a boutique version of the TR-707/727
