I see a lot of people complaining about the size, but boutiques are sound modules, so of course you will need a controller. Maybe for live situation they´re too small, but again, Roland never sold the boutiques for a live situation, they´re selling this line as sound modules for the studio. At the same time, a lot of people complaining about the boutique or volca size and they love Eurorack so basically some people wants to look more smarter than other or they just love trolling. And they{re not expensive. A VST insturments is around 150, an audio interface probably the same money, and if you add a hardware controller with knobs and sliders (even when they´re small), they´re not expensive at all.
Last week I asked for more boutiques and Florian delivered :D do you feel huge when you play it?? That tempo knob is GINORMOUS So funny how small the other encoders are, seeing it next to the TB-3 really puts it in perspective for me. Reminds me of Volca encoders
i'm in kind of an awkward position since i don't really have space for a big 12 channel mixer, so ideally with a drum machine I'd want a lot of processing/effects options built in. Because of that I've never really found an ideal Drum Machine for me. I do like my Volca Drum quite a bit but being limited to 16 Patterns with no fills is a crime.
Have you ever thought of getting one of these small Allen&Heath mixers? Decent EQs and FX with nice routing options and VERY small footprint for the feature set
tr8s which was already mentioned in this episode should be sorta able to, but more generic samplers like digitakt or mpc would better do that job for the same money
Sample-based stuff has its own limitations, but I heartily recommend UVI’s Beatbox Anthology 2 software. I have their Vintage Vault 3, and Beatbox may well be the single strongest part of the collection. Over 100 machines sampled, and you can mix and match sounds from different machines to your heart’s delight. It has effects, but they can be turned down or off.
Oh boy, I love me some "robo bass subwoofer benchmark retro hightech UK juke house friendly electronic takeover", a very underrated electronic music genre (yes I will keep making this joke, mostly to help your algorithm, keep it up!!! this show rocks!!!)
@@AudioPilz yeah, it does the job, still just something that would be nice. I say this with my TR8 used entirely with USB audio only......but, hypothetically, if I had a big mixer...oh the possibilities
i feel like the “too small for live use” is the only real issue it has, and it’s also the only thing i don’t really make use of with mine because i use mine for entirely different purposes. to me it sounds fine, and the USB out doesn’t bother me as a mac user. a lot of people talk about the RD-8 being both better and cheaper but the TR-08 being as small as it is made it the better choice for my setup since it sits nicely on my desk easily within reach without taking up too much space. i also don’t entirely mind it not having more modern/anachronistic features since i picked mine up intentionally because of the sequencer being more accurate to the original. if i want more modern 808 sounds and a more modern sequencer i have plenty of options in the box for that. enjoyed the video tho, i love your channel cause you take honest looks at gear and try to find where they fit into your own workflow, and i appreciate that honesty much more than the legions of nerds that just complain about “oh it’s small and digital” even if a lot of the things that were negatives to you were positives to me.
Unpopular opinion maybe, but I love the Boutique range. They're just so adorable! Mind you, I only own the TB-03, but I'm currently knitting a little hat for it. With the SP-404 mk2 out, have you ever done the SP-404 range? I have the 404a, and I love it to bits while also hating its guts. As an effects box it's genius, as a sampler it's fun, but making something complete with it is frustrating.
@@AudioPilz The only RUclips video on my channel is also the only thing I have actually managed to kind of finish with the SP-404a. In my garden, with a complicated beverage...
@@ericvernooij2917 I think that's mainly just our fault. The sp404 distracts you so easily with all its features. I think if you put your mind to playing, and stop creating samples you can do something. Someone called it the strat of samplers, like a guitar, I don't think it's meant to be played on its own really. Creamy track tho.
FWIW, I've never used one of these, but I do have an original TR-808 and have put the Roland Cloud 808 (which theoretically should sound pretty much identical to the ACB hardware) up against the original. If I give it a bit of thought (and add a bit of saturation plugin), I can create a "digital" 808 sound that is nearly indistinguishable from my 41 year old analog machine. I mean, you could give your money to Satan and get an RD8 I suppose, and maybe that Buli machine has an edge in performance just due to size and format. But in the studio, I don't think you're missing much soundwise between this thing and an original 808. Also, keep in mind, that the OG 808 is kind of a pain in the ass to use and has very few features. It would have been nice to see this 21st Century update at least include a "tune" function. Alas, you're probably better off with a TR8 or TR8S.
Be careful, you'll have the analogue originals RUclips gang upset. According to their superior ear and tone detection they'd hear the difference immediately on any given recording.
@@23bit76 I think there are far fewer of those people than people think. Analog Originals provide a benefit which is different from the final sound, as most of us who own them know.
This should go for £200 max. Personally i think if you're going to make a tr808 nowawadays every sound should have much more extreme tweaks -- pitch and length etc
Likely unpopular opinion, I vastly prefer the sounds of every other x0x over 808. (606 especially, it's so nice and soft when used in a chillouty song). Although it's the signature part of it, the kick is just too bassy, even in the unmodded version. Though I'm not a fan of most of the genres known for the 808, so I guess it's just a matter of my taste.
Why don't you make an episode about the OG tb303? I know I am not going to make many friends here, but the thing doesn't have midi, it's a pain to program and tune. It's a very simple synth for the price...
I'm a big fan of acb. Much more so than rompler based synthesis. But I don't know why anyone would buy a TR-08 when the TR-8s isn't that much more cash (used anyway), but I actually like the very small form factor of the boutiques. Anyway, I'd never use this except for fun. Way better overlapping gear out there like the Elektron Rytm or Jomox stuffs. Why haven't you done a vid on your Jomox yet? That thing is classic "bad gear". So frustrating to use in a way, so limited (by design, but so dialable relative to other kick generators), but the results are so glorious.
I went with the TR-08 + 09 instead of a TR-8S because I can use all the sounds simultaneously (the TR-8S lets you mix and match but has a max of 11) and I love the classic look and workflows. The tiny knobs don't bother me at all, but then I'm not trying to do Jeff Mills style performances on them either. That said, I wish the TR-08 had a mute mode you could lock into instead of the two finger contortion.
£400 for one of these feels pretty steep as well. If you want an 808-alike I'd say either save up the extra cash for the TR-8S (I love mine despite its limitations), or - and I feel perhaps a wee bit dirty saying this - save yourself £100 - 150 and buy a Behringer RD-8. The reality is the latter is really good at being a TR-808 clone for a lot less dollarpoundeuro than the TR-08.
Having grown up learning to sequence on a TR505 and not really spending much time in the electronic or hip hop scene, I've always hated the 808, I've never understood it, and I'm tired of being at the gas station and hearing 808 beats with what must be 64th note hihats blasting from shitbox SUVs. That being said, I'm glad Roland has offered it in this module series, which overall I'm coming to enjoy (the JU-06A is a killer unit that makes a hardware Juno accessible and easy to integrate into an automated DAWless rig), and I wouldnt mind if they brought back the 505 with some improvements as well.
Please try to do the TR-606 next or in the future. They are still cheap enough and no one seems to like them at all....perfect for Bad Gear! I like mine a lot, $25US on small town craigslist! Also, what do you edit your videos with? They are great.
Bad Gear means it's really Friday and now the weekend can begin. Excellent. I loved my OG 808 back in the day but I'm quite happy with my TR-8 for practical tweakage. If I were to succumb to nostalgia I'd probably get this rather than a Behringer - it would be primarily just for looking at and my TR-8 and Novation Circuit can handle all the drums I need in a hardware setup. Double extra points today for the kick drum at 4:40 and "more Rover".
Next time please do a sound warning when you play such a massive kick through the built-in speaker, you nearly knocked all my furniture over :( Edit: Seeing your face pasted all over things is too funny, the spiderbot just killed me - AudioPilz stickers when? :D
here on another random video to compliment your style. I can't believe i silently mouthed "ticking all the boxes" when i knew you were going to say it.
Never has gear given me so much “vst-in-a-box”-feeling than the Boutique series. That, and the fact that adding just a single output to this drumbox should be punished by law.
I'll take the Behringer RD-8 a 💯 times instead of this boutique 808, I really don't understand why Roland is doing that, is not that hard for a big company like them to bring back their products. If Dave Smith of Sequencial wich is a smaller company compared to Roland brought back the Prophet 5/10, why Roland can't, and don't forget Korg with ARP comebacks.
@@AudioPilz Yes, and not only that, is cheaper and have individual outputs and sounds great, Behringer Is doing what they don't have any interest to do and for haters, don't blame Behringer for cloning stuff from Roland either.

Never seen the appeal of the TR-08. It's always seemed massively overpriced considering it's running the same OS as the big AIRA with most of the functions locked off, and there are so many multi-sample packs available at various price points including half-decent ones for literally nothing. I do prefer using hardware in general but ultimately once it's in a mix with other stuff are you really going to be able to tell enough of a difference between this and a sample pack to justify a £400 price tag? I'd say probably not. IMO Roland really dropped the ball with the analogue revival considering what brands like Korg and Arturia have been able to do with *actual* analogue hardware at reasonable prices over the past five years.

The ‘moreover’ gag deserves special mention here. 👌 Coffee just came out my nose.
Thanks! Coffee is for drinking, y'know;)
Last week I asked for more boutiques and Florian delivered :D do you feel huge when you play it?? That tempo knob is GINORMOUS
So funny how small the other encoders are, seeing it next to the TB-3 really puts it in perspective for me. Reminds me of Volca encoders
Always a pleasure;)
Two jams? Ambassador, you are spoiling us
There's a third one on my Patreon (shameless plug;)
i'm in kind of an awkward position since i don't really have space for a big 12 channel mixer, so ideally with a drum machine I'd want a lot of processing/effects options built in.
Build your patterns in-the-box!
tr8s which was already mentioned in this episode should be sorta able to, but more generic samplers like digitakt or mpc would better do that job for the same money
Have you considered getting a groovebox for drum machine duties?
Something like an electribe2, digitakt, mc707 or the like?
I bought an obscure "robo bass subwoofer benchmark retro hightech UK juke house friendly electronic takeover" sample CD back in the 90s;)
Imagine, a modern Roland drum machine with individual outs...I can dream
The TR-8 had 4 - does that count?
@@AudioPilz yeah, it does the job, still just something that would be nice.
I say this with my TR8 used entirely with USB audio only......but, hypothetically, if I had a big mixer...oh the possibilities
Tr8s has 6. Beast
@@norbertonucagrossa oh gtfo, how am I just learning this now? Thank you, as if I needed another reason to want a tr8s
At the first glance I didn't know what I was looking at, but then I realized I clicked all the boxes and came top bad GEAR! woohooo
Yeah, a mighty ole boxticker!!!
i feel like the “too small for live use” is the only real issue it has, and it’s also the only thing i don’t really make use of with mine because i use mine for entirely different purposes. to me it sounds fine, and the USB out doesn’t bother me as a mac user. a lot of people talk about the RD-8 being both better and cheaper but the TR-08 being as small as it is made it the better choice for my setup since it sits nicely on my desk easily within reach without taking up too much space.
i also don’t entirely mind it not having more modern/anachronistic features since i picked mine up intentionally because of the sequencer being more accurate to the original. if i want more modern 808 sounds and a more modern sequencer i have plenty of options in the box for that.
enjoyed the video tho, i love your channel cause you take honest looks at gear and try to find where they fit into your own workflow, and i appreciate that honesty much more than the legions of nerds that just complain about “oh it’s small and digital” even if a lot of the things that were negatives to you were positives to me.
Thank you so much!!!
The moment with the kick blasting out of the speaker made me laugh so hard I cried
MASSIVE BASS!!!
I'd love to see the Boutique hat! SP-404s are on my list - I'll have a closer look, thanks!
Super noisy inputs as well.
Imagine a boutique SP-04 with 12 tiny drum pads...
The whale was so subtle and had me laughing out loud. Hats off to you sir!
Thanks! Save the whales!!!
True that! I usually just use a sample;)
Be careful, you'll have the analogue originals RUclips gang upset. According to their superior ear and tone detection they'd hear the difference immediately on any given recording.
@Chris Cheltenham hahah!
@@23bit76 I think there are far fewer of those people than people think. Analog Originals provide a benefit which is different from the final sound, as most of us who own them know.
As a former 808 owner I'm happy enough with my TR-8. Effects, tweakability and just a couple of assignable outs - that'll do nicely.
Yeahhh nine minutes of pure delight
Thanks!!!❤️
I'm not sure I'd even consider it if it weren't for the the rear speaker, indispensable.
HAPPY FRIDAYYY
The rear speaker is essential!!!
"more Rover" made me laugh more than it should have 🤣😂
Who's a good boy???
This should go for £200 max. Personally i think if you're going to make a tr808 nowawadays every sound should have much more extreme tweaks -- pitch and length etc
It does have these features - hidden in the menu🥺
TR8S?
Hung over on Tuesdays was socially acceptable 😂
I remember those days well 👌
Not only acceptable but expected;)
Likely unpopular opinion, I vastly prefer the sounds of every other x0x over 808. (606 especially, it's so nice and soft when used in a chillouty song). Although it's the signature part of it, the kick is just too bassy, even in the unmodded version.
Though I'm not a fan of most of the genres known for the 808, so I guess it's just a matter of my taste.
I feel you, it's just everywhere. I still like it a lot tbh
The robobass subwoofer benchmark retro high tech UK juke house friendly electronica takeover, is a vibe!
Thank you!!!
Why don't you make an episode about the OG tb303? I know I am not going to make many friends here, but the thing doesn't have midi, it's a pain to program and tune. It's a very simple synth for the price...
Next April 1st is a Friday;)
HAHA I loved the STRYPER pic!
These boys had the looks;)
To hell with the devil!
There's some truth to it. Thanks for the input!
Your editing and delivery are hilarious 😂
Thank you!!!
How many takes does it usually take to get the finale's genre-title right?
ONE!!! ;)
@@AudioPilz Of course, the best ONE :)
I really like your Beats. I get inspiration each time I hear them.♥️
Thanks!!!❤️❤️❤️
£400 for one of these feels pretty steep as well. If you want an 808-alike I'd say either save up the extra cash for the TR-8S (I love mine despite its limitations), or - and I feel perhaps a wee bit dirty saying this - save yourself £100 - 150 and buy a Behringer RD-8. The reality is the latter is really good at being a TR-808 clone for a lot less dollarpoundeuro than the TR-08.
Yeah, temptation is strong;)
Plus the RD-8 is superior in every regard.
That’s why my Friday was wack, I missed bad gear!
❤️❤️❤️
It's more like BMW limos over here;)
Whenever I visit RUclips on late Friday, the first suggestion is ticking all the boxes.
That Asian street food compilation?🤣🤣🤣
Please try to do the TR-606 next or in the future. They are still cheap enough and no one seems to like them at all....perfect for Bad Gear! I like mine a lot, $25US on small town craigslist! Also, what do you edit your videos with? They are great.
Hasn't the TR-606 become a completely overpriced iconic piece of gear? FCPX (which I hate with a passion;)
@@AudioPilz dang, I hadn't checked prices in while.....still cheaper than an 808..
@@AudioPilz why do you hate FCPX? I’ve been making my living editing video for over 40 years and I wouldn’t use anything else! 😆👍🏼
Or the TR-626! I bought mine on a small town craigslist for under 40! Love the dedicated outs.
You had me worried for a sec, but then you posted a vid featuring Roland.
Yeah, I try to not release a Roland vid every week;)
Traded my TR-08 and 09 for a TR-8S. Having the legacy TR models in one piece of hardware just seemed like a no-brainer.
Really liked the TR-8 too! Have a nice weekend!
Next time please do a sound warning when you play such a massive kick through the built-in speaker, you nearly knocked all my furniture over :(
Edit: Seeing your face pasted all over things is too funny, the spiderbot just killed me - AudioPilz stickers when? :D
Damn, I forgot about the trigger warning;)
SpiderPilz FTW
here on another random video to compliment your style. I can't believe i silently mouthed "ticking all the boxes" when i knew you were going to say it.
❤️❤️❤️
Never has gear given me so much “vst-in-a-box”-feeling than the Boutique series. That, and the fact that adding just a single output to this drumbox should be punished by law.
Yeah, I would have taken even ADAT;)
@@AudioPilz With a SCSI zipdrive for added storage. ARGH!
good to see roland back
Roland will forever be a staple on this channel;)
I'll take the Behringer RD-8 a 💯 times instead of this boutique 808, I really don't understand why Roland is doing that, is not that hard for a big company like them to bring back their products.
If Dave Smith of Sequencial wich is a smaller company compared to Roland brought back the Prophet 5/10, why Roland can't, and don't forget Korg with ARP comebacks.
The RD8 seems really tempting
@@AudioPilz Yes, and not only that, is cheaper and have individual outputs and sounds great, Behringer Is doing what they don't have any interest to do and for haters, don't blame Behringer for cloning stuff from Roland either.
@@carlosserrano3985 I got TD3 its a full plastic cheap box compared to their Crave, but sound like it need to, and the menu commands are, like the old tb 303, and... still a nightmare for beginers, like good old games very hard.
How can an audio gear channel be so hilarious
It's weird😂
For 50K subs why dont you team up with Groove Bagasch Sound system and organize a Bad gear freeparty!!
Great idea but only about 0.00000001% of my viewers are in Austria;)
Now, THAT is an idea! Make it happen in the summer!
I'm a simple man. I see Stryper, I click the like.
Thanks! Nice outfits, even for that time;)
Aim those lasers at Uli. He definitely makes things that are worse than the TR-08. 100%
Still discussing with my lawyers how to approach this;)
I'd take an RD-08 over the TR-08 anytime. 100%
@@birdie17uk That was not my point at all but I am glad you like your toy.
@@guysmiley7289 I don't own one, but I tend to prefer stuff that is, you know, usable. What was your point exactly, 'cos your comment about Uli's 'toys' seems to indicate that I entireley understood you the first time. Whatever, gear snobs are quite welcome to pay through the nose for actually crappy bad gear so long as it is 'authentic'.
@@birdie17uk Dear diary...
Passing thru Vienna right before the lockdown, staying at brillantengrund. There’s a party in the courtyard tonight, swing thru!
Damn, missed that one! Thanks, though
By the time I got back from observing high level Catholicism /organ shredding at the cathedral and slamming back mugs of punsch at the xmas market the party had dwindled to one awkward cadre of gentleman standing under a disco ball in complete silence. It was terrifying and I’ll see you next time!
The TR-08 is a nice conversation starter though;)
@ghost mall they have lost the institutional knowledge to produce analog instruments. Hence the SE collaboration
I saw it on the wall at Sweetwater and I can't imagine thinking it has no appeal. Its beautiful.
