I had a JX-08 for a little over a year, and honestly it sounds really great for what it is! With independent effects on both voices and the ability for each channel to be independently controlled by midi, you have a pretty powerful two voice module for a small hardware set-up. That being said, I found myself using the classic patches more than anything else and eventually sold it and bought a real JX-8P and love that even more 🙂.

I think you're right regarding the boutique range. Roland should do more to emphasise that these are not a reissue of the old synths but a budget synth made with influence from the classic ones. This would make a lot more sense and maybe upset less people, and let them know more accurately what they are getting.

A note regarding the noisy USB. If you are in the UK, use an official Apple iPhone or iPad charger to power it. They have a proper Earth connection which sorts out the USB noise (not sure if this applies to other country’s Apple chargers). This works on all the Boutiques. Obviously no good if you are connecting to a PC but useful if you are using them as a standalone synth.

For my taste, it delivers this authentic 80s punch and thanks to several very good creamy choruses (chorae ??? :-) and a nice filter it's a great choice for every synthwave production. I'm swayed. At first I was like "why did Roland leave out some key features of the Jx-8p?" and then I went and played my JX-3p and heard those ever slow digital envelopes. Well said here, this machine definitely wouldn't get as much hate if it wasn't marketed as an 8P.

I have a JX-8P, but really like the JX-08. Its not exactly the same, but its like a new member of the family.
The tone of the JX-8P is better, richer when playing chords IMO, but I've heard some great sounds out of the JX-08. Its bitimberal, 20 note polyphonic and has good built in FX.

  • @cravensean

I was watching this with bated breath because this was my most recent synth purchase. I had three reasons for deciding on this one. Ranging from least to most petty, the combination of surface controls, two voices with independant sequencing, lots of polyphony, and internal effects combined with an overall sound I liked was the first consideration.
My music buddy -- I don't play conventional keyboards with comfort and this is an ongoing issue but he does, he had piano lessons as a kid --- once groaned out in response to a Depeche Mode song, "I love the eighties." And he's the one who'll be making the most use out of this.
And finally, our studio keyboard/synth is a Korg Poly-800. I wanted something that would sit on that stupid menu panel it has on the right-hand side that had ACTUAL CONTROLS. I swear, it gave me hives for decades.
So with that in mind, it was gratifying to hear you say nice things about the unit. I wish it had seperate controls for both envelopes and more waveforms but honestly, I like it a lot.

I actually have this one! Honestly it feels a bit superfluous to me - the chorus and FX are pretty good, and the front panel let you get close to the 'classic roland sounds' but it's never something I would go to first. The panel also seems like it would be immediate, but there are enough annoying shift functions that I always forget how to do /something/. I'm planning to get rid of it since it feels like my 707 fills its role more than capably.
Totally agree on it being a great synth if you look at it in a vacuum, though.

I guess having Zen-Core style filters, the Zen-MC's should sound similar enough, with the added bonus of being also a dumbed-down integra, a drum machine and a sampler (or sample player in the case of the MC-101. Sampling from USB doesn't count).

@@AudioPilz I wish both behringer and roland would stop with the clone thing, and just try to develop really interesting instruments with innovative features, technology, and good sounds... its possible to take a cheap mixer, and feed it back into itself to turn it into a sort of 'oscillator'... maybe someone could design a synth based on that concept...

As usual Florian hits the nail on the head. This Boutique module really doesn’t capture much of the sound or the vibe of its namesake, but it sounds really good as its own thing. I could deal with the panel omissions but trying to simultaneously tweak the amp and filter envelopes from a single set of ADSR sliders is something I will not entertain. I’m considering selling my AX60 for this very reason.
