A lot of people mention the System 8 and Jupiter-X, but there's an even better option. Since OS 2.1, the Roland Fantom has supported "Model Extensions", which give you very accurate virtual emlations of various classic Roland synths. Currently, these include the Jupiter 8, Juno 106, JX3P and SH-101, but they may release others in the future. The emulations give you the full polyphont and zone layer capabilities of the Fantom and can be combined with any other Fantom tones in different zones. (or you can run up to 16 of them together, so you could have 16 Jupiter 8's going at once). So it's very flexible and powerful. And, of course, it's a professional unit with a great keyboard, impressive I/O and reliable construction. So that's the way I went. Of course, it's not cheap, but it's still a lot cheaper than an original Jupiter 8 these days.
I think most of the Roland Boutiques sound great. I'm actually quite impressed with the Analog Circuit Behavior technology. However, the 4-note polyphony and tiny controls were a real deal breaker for me. That is why waited and eventually got a System-8. 8-note polyphony and appropriately sized knobs and sliders. Another thing to keep in mind is that daisy-chaining multiple boutiques together doesn't give you the proper polyphonic experience you'd think. The big failure is that if you have patches with long release times, they will get cut off before they finish. The design of the Boutique range only uses the next poly-chained instrument if you're holding at least four keys down. If you play a four-note chord and lift your fingers to play another four-note chord, it will not look at the envelope to see if those voices are still being used. It will see that you lifted your fingers and it won't use the second instrument. It will use the original instrument and cut off the releasing notes. Fortunately, this is not a problem for the System-8.

@4:03 Florian just made a Black Metal Synth Album by accident. Now it's only a matter of time before we get to the JU-06A, Great work as always. Thanks for making such awesome music and videos!
Although it sounds quite nice, I can't help but compare it with plugins like TAL's J-8 which feature: individual voice parameters like oscillator/filter/envelope slop, triple the polyphony of this synth, individual outputs for upper/lower layers, expanded unison behaviour, expanded possibilities for modulation, etc. The only selling point of buying a Roland VST in a box is the box itself, and seeing how small it is and how much they had to compromise to get it all in it's physical form, it ceases to be appealing.
@@CraigScottFrost I've seen some people using it and loving it, not because it's the true unabridged Jupiter 8 experience, but because it's a piece of hardware that serves them. More power to them. I'm too attached to the workflow and capabilities of the original to settle for anything less.
@@CraigScottFrost This! There's absolutely no advantage to buying a hardware digital recreation of an analogue synth. It literally won't be any better than a well made VST.
@@CraigScottFrost Absolutely agreed! I don't really have access to a whole lot of hardware of any kind, my main keyboard is a Kurzweil digisynth that doubles as midi controller. Love it, don't know what I'd do without it, but even if I did own a lot of hardware, I'd find it easier and less troublesome to record using plugins. I feel like physical synths are far better for hands on sound design and jamming, maybe working out ideas, than actually using them for recording. But that's just me.
I see your MIDI controller's #2 fader had "don't remove under any circumstance" duct taping to keep it out of the fun. Cool! As for the JP-08, had one, tried to use it with my big fingers and realized my efforts were futile. The only thing I regret is selling it off so soon when they were cheap ($299US) and not just tossing it into a box so I could now sell it for double the money today. Missed opportunities... :(
You hit the nail in the head with your final comments. I sold my JP-08 as I found myself using Jupiter-8 plugins 100% of the time instead of JP-08. The 4 voice polyphony, having to map MIDI controllers to bypass the tinytinytiny controls... not worth the hassle for me.
I bought, a couple of years ago, a fancy eurorack dual analogue sequencer that used the same sized faders as on the boutique Jupiter to set the step pitches. As set up, the faders controlled a frequency range of 0-10v ie 10 octaves on a 10mm fader throw. It had to go, and I'd never buy any piece of kit that uses them.
Oh damn, I find myself pausing every three seconds to catch all the jokes. And I still had to go back three times to finally get the "Leias" of sound reference! Thanks for keeping us on our toes.
@@AudioPilz You are sort of the new Jexus, I mean, your video's are fun to watch and very informative, I watch them a few times over a weekend to catch it all. All the other channels are so serious. I am looking forward to every Friday. Also like Alex's channel. Please keep them coming
The Roland SE-02 boutique I thought was amazing. I got some incredible bass tones out of it and I loved using it with my OG beatstep sequencer. The chorus 1/2 only available though a midi cc message that’s very strange indeed. The OG Jupiter’s huge draw was its 8 voice polyphony, 4 voice w/ no note priority (known of) no arpeggiator , tiny sliders, mini keys, no key split this JP-08 is ticking many bad gear boxs earning its place.
I remember being 11 and having saved up enough from my little summer job to buy my own "boombox". Those minifaders really were only used as an on/off switch. :)
You nailed it with "The Roland Boutique Line is line Pokemon... Gotcha Catch 'Em All!" And that's something I've managed to do so far. With any luck, they'll do a sampler next (S-10? S-50? in a Boutique), that would complete the line.
I bought the three first boutiques: The JP, JX and JU. Ended up selling them to get the System 8. Same engine, same sounds, better tweakability, 49 full size keys. I never looked back.
I'm too old for this newschoolish VST sounding stuff and wouldn't crap out the money... Instead of pondering why it isn't called JP-04 to honor its polyphony, I admire the finale which is very beautifully done. I hope you didn't lose a finger twiddling with that ridiculous keyboard.
ah, the trusty uc33. bought mine in 2002, when i laid hands on a „second hand“ copy of reason 2. still in regular use to this day. prime example of good gear 🔥
@@jovanka--------5098 How many oscillators do they have? Can they crossmod, or sync? Do their filters self oscillate in way that can be played along the keyboard?
So I'm a lucky owner of the original, since the '90s. I love it but I'll point out it had no MIDI, no CV/Gate input for pitch, and some (like mine) don't even have Roland's DCB interface. So the boutique does have more to offer as far as connections go, as well as the built-in sequencer. It probably doesn't weigh a million pounds either. 😁
@@AudioPilz yes, it is due for service soon and I'll have that conversation... On the plus side there's a perfect spot for jacks with no DCB in the way!

I knew this one was a raw deal, but geez! Everything about this one rubs me the wrong way. If you snoop around and find one with new capacitors, you could use the kind of money the JP-08 goes for and get a JP-8000 instead. It's still not a Jupiter-8 but at least it's amazing in its own way.

I tried this at the store when it came out and loved it instantly. There is obviously something to that Jp-8 tone that's instantly awesome and useful. That being said, the cheap keys, tiny controls, and 4 note polyphony on a synth known for kick ass strings and pads were and immediate deal breaker. I've dealt with that enough on my microkorg, so I eventually went with the JX-3P and haven't looked back... MAny say the 3P shares a lot in common with the Jupiter-6 anyway so I'm happy. That being said I don't know what I'd do now if I had the same issue. Both the JP-08 and JX-3P are exponentially more expensive than they were 7 years ago.
These things sound great. They have obvious drawbacks that people who don't use them love to point out because, well hating Roland is generally acceptable. The actual answer is System 8. Real keys, real knobs, 8 voices.... yummy
Another epic Episode and truly bad gear (I was already worrying 😉). Even if I am already diagnosed with a severe case of GAS by my wife I was never really tempted by Roland's Boutique series in general. Have a nice weekend and see you next time.
I was waiting for this episode! The Roland updates brought cc messages to use the sliders with a controller. I also read somewhere that someone open source hacked a midiface 4x4 to fix the note stealing issue.
I've got 2 of these in k25m's. I love them. Awesome machines. And Roland seems to be moving away from acb, much to my chagrin so the older boutiques are better than what they are doing now with last gen. acm in the new ones IMO (no, the extra polyphony is not worth worse emulation). The SE-02 is best in the boutique line (relative oddity that it is), but I'll place the JP-08 as my second favorite (tied with JU-06a). Funnily enough, I'm buying a mint JP-8080 in Synths & Wood oak cheeks this weekend (my old one is a bit beat up). Not that it sounds anything close to an old jP. If anyone NEEDS a decent JP clone with polyphony, the Deepmind 12 is one of the most underrated synths of all time.
@@AudioPilz 12D. Frickin' awesome. Pad monster. Cheap, relatively small footprint with still tons of hands-on controls (forgoing the cheap keyboard), informative lcd, 12 voices and fx for miles. I'll still keep the JP-08's though.
@@alexwestconsulting Have the SE-02 too, man that thing is just awesome. Would like to see a Sequential take 5 in desktop version though, it would not have the same polyphony as the Deepmind and maybe a bit more expensive, but more waveforms, VCO and also good effects.
@@PORRFNK agreed. I've got a DSI Mopho X4 and a couple Tetras, but Take 5's proper VCO's, panel layout, extra voice and very good value will see me picking one up. Yes, If they make a desktop version I won't hesitate to get one. The multi-timbrality of the tetra, coupled with the chaining ability puts it in a special class though so I'll never get rid of them. But yes, the Take 5 no doubt is a great machine at a great price. Pads are tough with only 5 voices though ;). Korg prologue 16 (not the 8) is another underrated option. Sounds more Korg/Yamaha though rather than Roland.
@@alexwestconsulting Got a Tetra too, great machine, you think it would be better to add a X4 or get the DSI/Sequential Rev.2 desktop instead? I am really on the fence between the Rev.2 or the Take5. Dont have a lot of space and already got a Nord G2 as my master keyboard in the studio, maybe I could fit 2 keyboards :)

It's a cute little overpriced control-surface with a 4-voice Joop onboard. Totally overvalued VA. Nice review! The tweezer joke killed me, I'm dead 😂 Happy Bad Gear! Have a great weekend, Pilz!
@@AudioPilz It has it's problem, as the voice allocation goes 1-4 from unit1 and voices 5-8 from the 2nd unit. Which means you have to keep at least 4 notes pressed to "wake up" the 2nd unit and get longer releases for the notes. If you only play 4 or less notes and release the notes and play new notes, you'll lose the end tail of the release for those notes. They should have allocated the voices better, for example like a-b-a-b-a-b-a-b instead of a-a-a-a-b-b-b-b (where a is the master JP-08 and b is the slave JP-08). Otherwise the polychaining works fine, you only use the controls of the master unit and the slave unit just have to be there, connected via midi and audio (I use the audio passthru for the audio on one of the units).
@@ata000001 For what it's worth, the Retrokits RK-002 cable's polymux function fixes this problem by alternating notes between the two (or more) units and it works perfectly. It's worth the $70 (they have many other midi utility functions as well) and it's what made me hold onto the JP-08s
I got a JP-08 quite a while back, I got it when I got the TB-03 and I found that it is a very intersting synth. I took my JunoG and went out via midi to the JP-08 and then midi out to the tb-03 so they all play in unison and then feed the audio back through the JunoG, added a bit of chorus, delay and crunch and well, it's phenomenal. The small size of them I don't mind that much the JP-08 unlike the Juno-06 kinda does piss me off that the arpegiator isn't there, it is half polyphony because of course it is, and a lot of the features are sorta hidden via menu, but that isn't really that big of a deal breaker as what I love about physical synths vs a VST is that I can get hands on with both hands and tweak it in real time. A vst, unless you have some sort of duel mouse set up, or external controller, you aren't going to get that feel as you do with a synth. The JP-08 though like most jupiters, never feels like a lead instrument to me, it always was softer than a juno in tonal quality so I always have it as a backing or a layer to harder tones. Not sure if that is a just me thing or what.

This is how all synth reviews should be done!
This little beast sounds so good. Wow. Blown away.
I wholeheartedly agree!
@@CraigScottFrost I picked up a used Keylab pretty much just so's I could get a cheap crack at Analog Lab . There are some real doozies in there! :D
Dang it man, I'm in love with the 303 line of the first jam, it's a great one! That tension build-release at the end was cheff kiss.
Thank you!!!
that vocoder shoutout was really great ! I love your vocoder shoutout ^^
Thank you!!!
Makes me wanna meet Rocco Misco
Fantastic episode. Really loved the video for the final jam
Thank you!!!
That midi controller has seen things;)
You hit the nail in the head with your final comments. I sold my JP-08 as I found myself using Jupiter-8 plugins 100% of the time instead of JP-08. The 4 voice polyphony, having to map MIDI controllers to bypass the tinytinytiny controls... not worth the hassle for me.
I was longing for a plug too when I was working with the JP-08
audiopilz posted = good day
Happy to hear that, have a nice weekend!
The memes flick by so fast learning to pause them has actually improved my mute game!!
One's mute game is never perfect;)
I bought, a couple of years ago, a fancy eurorack dual analogue sequencer that used the same sized faders as on the boutique Jupiter to set the step pitches. As set up, the faders controlled a frequency range of 0-10v ie 10 octaves on a 10mm fader throw. It had to go, and I'd never buy any piece of kit that uses them.
I admire people who can make controls like that work for them
Thank you for the entertainment!! Your videos tic all the boxes.
Thanks!
loved the shout out to Dr mix! lmao. audioPilz u make the best synth videos man!
and nick over at sonic state lmao
Thank you!!! Nick is the GOAT!!!
Oh damn, I find myself pausing every three seconds to catch all the jokes. And I still had to go back three times to finally get the "Leias" of sound reference! Thanks for keeping us on our toes.
Bad Gear is not a linear medium;) Thanks for watching (multiple times)
The SE-02 sounds really fat indeed!
I appreciate this. 4 note polyphony is not a deal maker. I do 9,11 and 13th chords.
As I can't properly play keyboards I don't care that much;)
wow, that second tune what you made in the video blow my mind
Thanks!
the line 6 pod (og) is pretty hated by metal guitarists but is actually pretty sick on drum machines & synths. Have i already said this? If so my bad.
Got one here, love it!!! Thanks for the suggestion!
Definitely a multi watch video. Great content and lots of giggles. Thank you🙂
Thanks for watching!!!
The sliders remind me of the tiny sliders that always came on various mini boomboxes. Super easy to go too far.
I found it to be almost untweakable
I remember being 11 and having saved up enough from my little summer job to buy my own "boombox". Those minifaders really were only used as an on/off switch. :)
@@hillie47 Some were definitely almost like on-off. 😆
@@AudioPilz Erica Synths did it right, on my LXR-02!
@ghost mall the most useless, are actually the even tinier ones that some companies put on their Walkman style cassette players with headphones. 😆
I love your show perfect to calm down after work
Thank you so much!
Wonderful sounding synth with teensy tiny little sliders and 4 note (!) polyphony!!!!
Yeah, it's a pity!
How did I miss this one! It's been one of my favourites, I'm laughing on my own more than once.
Thanks!!!
The vocoder shoutouts in this episode are great, I feel. 10:12
Thank you!!!
also your jams are so well mixed and I just love this channel :)
Thank you so much!
The visuals of the song were amazing. As an anime fan, I loved it.
Thank you!!!
@@AudioPilz what are all those animations from?? they look stunning and I want to watch them!!
You nailed it with "The Roland Boutique Line is line Pokemon... Gotcha Catch 'Em All!"
And that's something I've managed to do so far.
With any luck, they'll do a sampler next (S-10? S-50? in a Boutique), that would complete the line.
Nice! Maybe an MC-303;)
Finally Roland also made an appearance on bad gear....they're your most loyal subscribers 🤣
Their hitmen certainly are;)
I bought the three first boutiques: The JP, JX and JU. Ended up selling them to get the System 8. Same engine, same sounds, better tweakability, 49 full size keys. I never looked back.
The System 8 gets mentioned a lot - very interesting!
What was this show again about? ;-)
JP-08 sounds actually pretty good.
Entertaining yet again - thanks for sharing!
The sound is definitely not the issue with this one;)
Despite its physical & sonic limitations, and owning a Microkorg and a variety of other synths & workstations, I actually love my JP-08.
That one is probably a modern classic
I'm too old for this newschoolish VST sounding stuff and wouldn't crap out the money... Instead of pondering why it isn't called JP-04 to honor its polyphony, I admire the finale which is very beautifully done. I hope you didn't lose a finger twiddling with that ridiculous keyboard.
Thanks! I probably lost a few more hair trying to play it;)
@ghost mall and costs three times more and is very bulky as heck
Best editor on YT? He’s ticking all the boxes 📦
Thank you so much!
It;s the problem with a lot of this kind of gear, combining killer sound with maddening limitations.
Classic LOLand!
ah, the trusty uc33. bought mine in 2002, when i laid hands on a „second hand“ copy of reason 2.
still in regular use to this day. prime example of good gear 🔥
I spent soooooooo much time with these!!!
Seriously, I laughed do hard at the tweezers gag! Your show is 👌
Thanks🙏🙌🖖
Thank you so much!!!
This was one of the best intros to a Bad Gear, imo.
Thanks! OG Roland sound ftw!!!
Sounds fantastic! Makes me want to give TAL-J-8 a shot 👀
I've yet to try that one. Great idea!
Tal U No LX is great, I can't knock soft synths. They're a nice option
@@jovanka--------5098 How many oscillators do they have? Can they crossmod, or sync? Do their filters self oscillate in way that can be played along the keyboard?
It sounds pretty good, it's a joy to play around with
That SE7EN reference is savage. I love it! XD Keep up the good work Mr. AudioPilz.
Thanks!
Looking forward to the Knifonium episode!
This. Thing. Is. Awesome.
I remember suggesting on this one many moons ago... you finally did it 😆
Thanks again for the suggestion!!!
Have you thought about getting it midified?
@@AudioPilz yes, it is due for service soon and I'll have that conversation... On the plus side there's a perfect spot for jacks with no DCB in the way!
Superb episode…. Put a smile on my face more than once. The Jupiter 8 remains an all time favorite, the sounds are impeccable….I love the Roland System-8, the Jupiter 8 sounds are on point in that machine 🎹
Salute to the magnifying glass meme 👈🏼
Thanks!
JP-8K is a classic in its own right
@ghost mall The System-8 looks super underrated.
JP8000 was my first synth. I still own it and I'm never selling it. Awesome synth. It's got way more character than a lot of current VAs.
Holy mackarel that jam at 6:30 was so good I melted!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much!!!
Imagine the meme potential if you crossed Nick Batt with a cat. Battcat (with PWM)!
A whole new universe of memery!!!
You'd modulate their DNA...
The final Pokemon conclusion about the boutique series is awesome. Roland should pay a ton of money to you.
I'm afraid they're contemplating giving money to hitmen;)
I've got to be honest, it sounds pretty great to my ears! But those sliders are too small lol
Agreed!
yes, the emulation itself is fantastic
That first jam definitely gives me some classic Sonic the Hedgehog vibes :)
Hard to say what about it hits me that way though.
Seems like most of my tracks and jams have some kind of computer game vibe to it;)
Pluck your brows and play the JP at the same time? I’m in! Lol 😂
Challenge accepted;)
Three Nicks in one show. You're spoiling us.
The man. The legend.
It’s a great day for bad gear!
...and therefore for the world!!!

Boutique prices are weird indeed. My favorite is still the A-01;)
These things sound great. They have obvious drawbacks that people who don't use them love to point out because, well hating Roland is generally acceptable. The actual answer is System 8. Real keys, real knobs, 8 voices.... yummy
I've yet to try the system 8 - very interesting!
Another epic Episode and truly bad gear (I was already worrying 😉). Even if I am already diagnosed with a severe case of GAS by my wife I was never really tempted by Roland's Boutique series in general. Have a nice weekend and see you next time.
Thanks, have a nice weekend!
Roland has managed to give the word boutique a low budget image.
True that!
Definitely
Not only an assault on analogue synthesizers, but on language itself.
I was waiting for this episode! The Roland updates brought cc messages to use the sliders with a controller. I also read somewhere that someone open source hacked a midiface 4x4 to fix the note stealing issue.
Thanks! Interesting, I have to do some research on that!
I've yet to try the Deepmind!
When I dream of the future, I see Roland launching mini Boutique versions of the Boutique versions. Anyone else with this dystopian vision? I can't sleep anymore...
...sold on a subscription basis;)
The jx-08 seems like a much better deal, 20 voice polyphony, multi timberal and has much bigger controls.
Yeah, I'm intrigued by the new ones too!
if you measure by polyphony, sure. but the jx-08 uses older and less cpu intensive modeling than the jp-08, hence why more polyphony.
It’s good. But it sounds a bit like Espen’s grandma. With 20-voice polyphony.
@@duncanjackson4170 I love Espen but I think his mind was made up before he did that comparison. It was hardly a fair comparison
@@alexwestconsulting Is Jx-08 not ACB? thats weird...

Thanks for watching!
Hey! This is actually good! I just want Roland to actually reissue this with a Jupiter-like aesthetic and updated sound core.
Yes, more Jupiter would have been appreciated;)
It's a cute little overpriced control-surface with a 4-voice Joop onboard. Totally overvalued VA. Nice review! The tweezer joke killed me, I'm dead 😂 Happy Bad Gear! Have a great weekend, Pilz!
Thanks! Have a nice one too!
loving the finale songs these last few video's!
Thank you so much!!!
I have 2 of these, bought new when these were available. Extra polyphony is useful especially with the dual layer sounds.
Nice, did polychaining work well for you?
References to Nick Batt's PWM obsession still crack me up. Nice!
Obsessed with his obsession;)
Insert ancient Xzibit meme.
I will never forgive them for only having 4 voices and no rainbow buttons.

Oh boy, a Roland Boutique video ? Lets hope the Roland hardcore fans don't find this, else your channel might turn into AudioAtompilz...
Keep em coming;)
Layering is key here, I agree!
i laughed way too hard when you used the tweezers to adjust a slider
😀
I've been going through a difficult downtempo synthwave phase. This helped
